@LeeLee The pea puffer would chew through the shell, however might eat the eggs
I want to build an algae eating tank out a cycled 10g. Thinking cherry shrimp and some snail. Mystery or ramshorn?
mysterys and amanos with some short nose algae shrimp
I guess it is kinda randomly asking but does anybody know of a good website to stream new tv shows online ?
@Brian Sonny i watch on flixzone. Just search on google for it :)
My nerite snail went missing, and we couldn't find him. We looked on the floor and all around but never found him, so we assumed he must be hiding in the tank somewhere. THREE WEEKS LATER, when we moved the table the tank had been sitting on, we found him. Turns out, he had fallen into the crack between the wall and the carpet which is why we didn't see him. He was completely dry, but I saw that his foot was intact and closed, so I figured it couldn't hurt to put him in a cup of water and see if there was any chance he was alive. After about an hour, I noticed his foot moved! I thought it may just be because it was rehydration, and not actually moving, so I waited. Another hour passed, and his foot moved more! Another hour, and I saw his little face and an antenna poking out! He lived! I couldn't believe it! 3 weeks on a carpet! Incredible!
So anyway, it's been 4 months since then, and he is alive and well. We've decided to call him Lazarus. It fits, ya know? 😂
what a legend
I have two ten gallon tanks on a metal rack; one on the top and one on the middle. I have an itty bitty nerite on the top one, and one day I somehow found him on the lid of the bottom one?? The rack doesn't touch the wall, the cords don't touch the tanks, so I have zero clue how he got there. My lights are maybe two inches above the lid so I thought he'd scorched himself, but I put him back in the tank just in case and sure enough he came out a little bit after and went back to crawling around as if nothing had happened. They're crazy xD Love them
I just saw another story on another video where someones mystery snail went missing and they found it weeks later on their daughters crayons box and decided to name it laz, short for Lazarus lol
@@Apaxetic That's awesome hahaha
That is INCREDIBLE!!! The name totally fits haha
My two mystery snails "Gotta go!"
My two Nerites "I like this spot. Think I'll stay here for a few days"
Too funny!
That’s funny to me also, one of my mystery snails likes to stay in one spot for long periods while the other moves around a bunch.
I normally have Nerite snails in my tanks, simply because they create less waste than the Mystery Snails, also they have pretty cool shell designs.
As usual another great and informative video, with regards to Nerites, what other foods can be placed in the tank, if the algae is under control? I have heard that sliced cucumber or fresh string beans?
Both of those work well. I've never met a snail that doesn't like repashy gel foods as well.
Have both and trumpet snails love em all. Mentioned it before fore
Sorry life happened, feed them tofu lots of calcium for shells Pleco’s love it also!
I love my 3 Mystery Snails but i have to say i recently added a few pieces of Dwarf Baby Tears and the Mystery snails ate every single leaf within 3 days, stalks are still intact but every leaf is gone haha that was a expensive snack :p
I discovered nerite snails come in many sizes, shapes and colors. I have seven 1/2 inch ones in a 40b and they scour the rocks, glass and plants. I have to add algae covered rocks. I also have the bigger tiger and zebra nerites. White dots... everywhere... I’m sure someone must eat them... I hope! Can you keep mystery snails with zebra loaches? Or the smaller chain link loaches?
I'm not sure about mixing loaches with snails. All I know if every tank I have that has loaches there are no snails. :-)
Prime Time Aquatics That’s why I haven’t done it. Even though the snails are the same size, my zebra loaches wiped out a few hundred miscellaneous snail including rams horn and trumpet in three days. I think they might treat a big snail as a roast to cut up and share. I want more nerites, but I don’t want them to steal food from shrimp or become food to loaches... so sad... I’ll have to get another tank or two. But I won’t blame you this time... I’ll tell my wife it’s Joanna’s fault.
(Old timer here)
Always had mystery snails, like them a lot. I have recently tried nerites twice and lost them both times. Now I have a Japanese trap door snail in a nano tank which are doing fine. Can you talk about this type? And why do my nerites die when all other snails do fine? 🤔😕
Nerites need harder water than mystery snails. They also like a bit of salt in the tank.
Is there any snail that does well in acidic water?
Not that I know of.
Will plecos eat the Nerite eggs?
Ours never did. :-/
i just got a mystery snail and he is now laying on the bottom is he dead or what?
It might take a day or so before it starts moving. Usually longer than that and it’s not a good sign.
Am I the only one that saw the levitating snail...? they can do that? 3:34
Nerite snails not only do their job but they don't specialize in dying. They are awesome.
I have left Mystery Snails in tanks I treated with Meds almost guaranteed to kill them. Never lost one.
Im suprised Ive had my nerite for over a year
Can confirm. My mystery snail kept getting his face stuck in the filter whereas my Nerite intuitively avoided it.
I just ordered ten mystery snails, who were in transit in a closed bag for around fourteen days. didn't lose a single one :)
@@stukablyat7136 I've lost way more nerites, than mystery snails. Nerites not only leave the water. They tend to stay out. If I didn't remove the lid, and manually put them back in the water, they would stay out until dead.
Nerites are more thorough cleaners, whereas mystery snails will move around more and hit more areas of the tank cleaning a bit here and there.
I like to mix and match...i find that Nerites and mysteries work well as a team.
I just did the same as a beginner.. Two nerites and two mystery snails in my 60L tank
I have 3 Nerite snails and 1 mystery in my 10 gallon and they do an awesome job
@@paigek9923 I like this idea. I have a 10 gallon that I have been growing an algae farm. My Betta loves the privacy but I think it’s time to get a couple if snails in.
This is the answer. Embrace the power of and!
@@juli8vdberg562 will it be alright to have 1 mystery and 1 nerite in a 10 gallon with a betta?
6:53
Ramshorn: Day 67, i don't think they've discovered I'm a spy yet
Mystery snail gets about 1.5 inches and live 1.5 ish years. My snail who’s 3 years old and pushing 4inches “is that a challenge?”
You own a Apple snail.
yeah i think thats an apple snail
Mine even laid eggs and now I own an ARMY
Nerite snail eggs= Fabulous aquarium glitter
Too funny! :-)
True. Only if you have female nerites. 👍
Mystery snails are the best
I have 3 nerite snails and 1 mystery snail. I know for sure that at least 2 of my nerites are female because I had one in a separate tank for a little bit to clean it up a little bit and it got eggs everywhere and I had 2 in my other tank and there were eggs in there too now they’re all in the same tank
I would think they would be a tasty treat for fish and shrimp too? I've got three nerites and no eggs in 5 weeks... perhaps I have all boys.
Nerrites have cooler shells, but mystery snails are bigger and way more active IMO
Have you seen high grade magenta or purple mysterys?! Eye Gems of the fresh water world.
Nerite snail eat mores algaes
My nertites are super active
Mystery snails have more personality too.
I never thought it would be so hard to figure out what kind of snail I wanted 🤣 I ended up going with nerite snails because, for now, I only have smaller tanks and I figured I would run out of room quickly with mystery snails. I was like Joanna at first, I like snails, but I just wasn't ready to become a snail farmer 😁 But I'm learning how each inhabitant of my little ecosystem has a purpose in a planted tank. As far as the actual snails go though... Mystery snails are so beautiful and a lot more interesting as far as their personalities go. My 12 year old grandson loves snails.. he went out and caught yard snails and some snails out of a pond a couple of months ago.I told him if he takes good care of them,I will set him up a snail tank. I figured it would be a perfect way for him to learn and enjoy our hobby. When I finally get all the fish moved around where they're going, I'm going to surprise him and give him one of these little tanks I have. Maybe, I can figure out a way to get some from you 😁🐌🐟🌿🌱
Cool! The nerites will be good for your tanks. :-)
I went with nerites because they are in betta tanks - their antennae are fine and harder to see, making them less likely to be a target for a betta that confuses them for a worm. :)
I love both nerite’s and mystery’s! My nerites have been better at algae eating, as my mystery is in a guppy tank that gets a LOT of food. He’d rather eat fallen flakes than any algae on the glass. That being said, he’s so much more active, almost to the point of being playful. I love him to bits.
Glad I'm not the only one that likes watching mystery snails. :-)
@@PrimeTimeAquatics both are lovely.
How many Nerites and Mystery Snails do you recommend for a 20 or 29 Gallon breeding guppy tank? And in a5-10 Gallon Betta Tank? The tanks will be planted.
My nerite snail has found the shrimp food dish and makes several trips there per week to snack!
I had two Nerite snails who recently passed. They were both over 3 years old. The last few months of their lives their shells were very tattered, but after learning their life expectancy, it was probably due to aging. They were great at cleaning algae. Now that they’re gone, I realize just how much work they really did. 😢
That's a long time for a nerite snail!
Here is my take i have kept them both mystery snails will eat soft leave plants not tough plants nerite snails will not eat even the softest leaf. I have had success at present keeping nerite snails with mbuna cichlids mystery snails antennas are too big so the cichlids pick them to death. Nerite can also survive with aquarium salt in the water even at high levels mystery snails will suffer with salt. But in my keeping, mystery snail are far better cleaners as far as detritus goes and move a lot faster than nerite snails covering more tank Floor faster. Nerite snails are a little better at algae control. But the mystery snail is a better overall cleaner.LIKE THEM BOTH THANKS JASON!
Jason: nerites laying eggs all over the place is a nuisance
My betta: nip nip nip don’t mind if I do
😂
Do your bettas just eat the eggs or do they eat the snails too?
@@moniquevandeplas5210 mine just eats the eggs
I wish mine would eat the eggs
I have two nerites and they are the BEST algae eaters I’ve ever had. Mystery snails are more fun to watch but nerite snails do better work.
So to provide actual explanation of why these snails won't eat plants, and where that rumor comes from, so people can understand and be more comfortable:
Plants have strong cell walls that are difficult to digest. Algae doesn't have that cell wall. Snails don't want to eat plants, they won't get enough energy back for the effort of tearing down the cell wall. But when you first add a plant to your tank, it will start to melt its aboveground parts to regrow as underwater parts. That breaks down the cell wall and then your snails are all over it. Eating what the plant was going to lose anyways. Snails will definitely eat dead or sick plants. And that's good too.
Well we have a lid secured with books on top because our nerite snail keeps escaping, popping UP the lid from underneath and leaving.
I really enjoy both the Nerite & Mystery Snails equally. My well water is rather hard & they tend to do nicely. 👍 🐚🐌🐌🐠🐌🐌🐛🐌
I would trust this man with my life tbh, he gives off good vibes
Appreciate you being here!
I like my snails to be discreet...like background players. Mystery snails are just too chonky
You didn't mention that Mystery snails are gonochoristic; a male and female must be present for reproduction. I bought two yesterday for my 70-litre tank. Fingers 🤞 they're the same sex. 😀
people say that they will change gender if they have two so say you got two males one will eventually change to a female
Nerites are also sex specific and require a male and female to reproduce
haha mystery snails can change genders !
@@hheeheheehehehhehehhee1854 For Pomacea bridgesii (the common aquarium pet) apparently not but, there's no conclusive proof except that some Pila may have been observed to have done so.
Recently had a marina heater that decided to heat my tank to over 40c and cook my tank of bloody marys all dead $3000 worth , but the nerite snail who was in there survived .
I love them .
I'm glad something survived!
My first mystery snail (gold and white) hid in its shell a lot, barely ate, it was a rarity to see it going around the tank at all. I'd put in algae wafers for it and it never touched it. Thought maybe that's just how those snails are, had it for a while too so wasn't sick. Then the second mystery snail I got (brown)... moved around a ton, DEVOURED ANYTHING IN ITS PATH, I was so weirded out that not only did it eat the algae wafers but also any blanched veggies I'd put in. And also the plants. Straight up ate my plants. I could not stop it.
Don't know if I want to try the mystery snail again, I love snails but worried about the poop and the plants. But nerite snails I'd be worried about getting a female and getting eggs everywhere.
Mystery snails actually breath above water. Lots of times are shipped out of water in damp clothes. They also need high calcium in their diets to keep the shell quality. Great video Jason!! Really enjoy watching.
What calcium should I add to my tank?
@@lauraburcham8427 I like to make snello and add calcium directly to the food
we got Nerite snails because after contacting or going to 6 local fish stores NOBODY had mystery snails! Everyone had been out of stock for months!
I breed mystery commonly and I will say watersprite is one plant they will eat regardless of how well it's doing. If you can get the plant big it's growth will stay ahead of the hunger, but new watersprite plants are toast with mystery snails
i havent had a good experience when keeping nerite snails...in my experience the nerite are alot more fragil than mystery snails
I have found the mystery snails to be a little easier to keep as well.
Toe Cup I found the horned nerite snails to be more hardy than zebra nerite.
Honestly I can’t kill my Nerite snails (not that I’d want to) but they are very hardy in my opinion has my two for over 3 years
Mine seem to live forever
My nerite snail has reincarnated twice now I never see eggs either
Mystery snails never stop pooping and eat like cows
I have always preferred nerite over mystery snails when I had fresh water tanks. They are great algae eaters and have such cool shells. Now that I have only saltwater I still have nerite snails and they even successfully bred in my tank once. It was fun watching the baby snails grow! 😊
That's cool that you got snail babies! :-)
The shape of mystery snail shells is what really makes me love them, ramshorns are even better imo
Sorry i couldnt see your answer to my question. So if u can answer again hopefully I'll be able to find it.
I will be setting up a new tank next month. I plan on using a live bacteria of course to jump start it. I want to add a mystery snail. At what time can i add one so there is actually food for them being it will be a new tank?
Thank you
I usually feed them sinking foods.
I've always been a fan of both but learn a little more toward the Nerite. 😊
I don't know if its my water where I live but nerite snails live way better for me. I started with 2 nerites and 2 mystery (meant to get a different color of nerites but petsmart had the name wrong) the mystery snails died
I'm sorry that happened. :-(
I have nerite snails because their inability to breed. Never noticed them eating any living plant.
My mystery snails are very entertaining. Are active and like to dive bomb fish from above!
I haven’t seen such an authoritative video on aquarium snails from any of the big channels. Excellent video except for one small fact. Mystery Snails DO NOT overrun your tank. Their eggs are always laid outside the water and you just pick them and bury them in your garden or yard. So the risk of them OVERUNNING is zero !
I have 7 mystery snails no breeding I keep them spread out in 3 tanks an keep my water levels full so they don't breed seems to work though I think I'd like some babies might try one day lol
So I got Nerites because I was told they were awesome algae eaters. First few days, they were all over the tank. After that, they only hid under the rocks and logs. Got some mysteries and the glass hasn’t had to be cleaned since. Not sure what happened but that’s my experience so far.
Do you have the nerites and mystery’s in together
I experienced mistery snails eating the roots of some floating plants, if a part of a plant is very tender which most plants don't have, they will be able to damage it, more so if it's melting or rotting. Nerite and Amano shrimp are algae eating machines. The Nerite snail is the king that absolutely devour algae, just one of them will make a HUGE difference in a 20g tank, and the Amano shrimp are the queens giving a fine polish over time, but you need a lot of them, and they will mainly eat off of rocks, wood and wider leaves that they can get a grip on.
Mystery snails are best used if you want to have a larger outstanding display snail and is very similar the apple snail that is a little bigger. But be aware ! Mystery snails will starve if they will eat only fish scraps !!! They are large scavengers that need a lot of food and they will fall out of you're aquarium when they lay their eggs !!! They climb out up to 3-4 inches out of the water to lay a egg cluster and then go back in to the water!!! They lay tens up to a hundred eggs and when the little baby snails hatch they stay inside the cluster too eat off of it and then munch on the exterior of the cluster and slides down in to the water on a slimy mucus trail ozzing from the egg cluster. You can easily over breed them and be overrun with baby snails that will grow in time to be massive snails. Best to just let one egg cluster to be laid naturally so that you can ensure the survival of the next generation and remove all the new egg clusters or you're aquarium will have swarms upon swarms of baby mistery snails. But all of this is stupid easy to control, so don't panic.
Good thing I have 12 mystery snails and 3 eggs clutches and 14 nerite snails ❤️❤️ 😁😁 I love them all
And also I have some rabbit snails I lost count 😄 but I have a lot of snails. I’m a snail hog
our baby mystery snails made pretty good snacls for our goldfish, that way you get a replenishing supply without getting overrun lol
I'm with team mystery snails cause I just love their behavior and colors. But nerites I would say are more useful? While I'm not sure about that as as well as my mysteries eating all dead things.
I’d have to say mystery snails are my favorite between how hardy they are and the they can breed easily
Is it normal for a mystery snail to be still for after breeding?
I've had a Nerite that would eat all my plants, even Anubias and cryptos. I fed the damn thing, so I guess this one was just coded different 🤷
I have 4 Asiatic Apple snails because Mystery snails aren't available in my country.
I'd love an Apple snail, but unfortunately the closest thing here are Mysteries (which are technically little Apples)
@@ArmundJay My snails aren't that beautiful compared to mysteries.
I like mystery snails because they breed so I do not have to buy more
mystery/apple snails kept eating my java ferns and duckweed... and nerite snails are cool but they need brackish water to breed so I prefer ramshorn and MTT snails.
I started with nerites and they never really did much. They sat on one of the rocks but then just burrowed into the substrate. After I got my mystery snails, they've been moving around eating and the nerites take major searching to find.
I love my nerites 💕 I have Chicago water so I do feel a bit helpless when I see my snails’ shells slowly eroding 😞
Wonder shells!
Calcium! Even Tums will do.
I only have nerites, and I love them! BUT they poop! A LOT! No mention of that, or how mystery snails compare in the poop department?
I used 1/2 marine salt for one gallon of water. For hatching narit snails eggs
Sorry, they're both revolting. I've never had an algae problem bad enough for me to get over the way they make me feel. That is, sick. Aquarium rats.
I bought 3 mystery snails. All 3 female. My daughter took the younger & smallest 2 for her 10 gallon with her betta. I took the bigger one to put in my 5 gallon with my betta. Now it's 4 months later & my lone snail decided to lay the eggs she got fertalized before I bought her. Now I have over 50 baby snails & I had to temporarily move them to a 1 gallon tank with sponge filter because my big male betta (3.5 inch without fins) was eating every one he saw. So for his well being & theirs I had to remove them. Don't worry I change the water a few times a week and it's only until after next week which will be their 2nd wk of life. Then they'll be big enough my betta can't eat them & he's not aggressive at all, doesn't attack the food when I feed him like some of my others do nor mess with my snail. However I would like to clear up some misinformation I kept finding when I was looking for how to take care of these snail babies. Maybe you can include this in a video some time. Everything I read and watched about mystery snail breeding said the eggs hatch after 3-4 weeks. Well if conditions are right, they will hatch sooner. My snails hatched in 7 days or less. I know because I change my aquariums water every Sunday. When I took the lid off the weekend before last to change the water, no eggs, everything normal. Took my lid of this past Friday, 5 egg clutches had been laid. Sunday 1 full clutch was hatching & a few from some of the others had started hatching. I only saved the one clutch. The others I left. Then a few days later after water change, another small clutch had been laid & a few hatched out. So there are 4 baby snails that have survived the betta tank & they are now just a bit bigger than betta pellets so he just looks at them like he's curious or thinking about trying to eat them, then swims off. So the 2-4 week hatch time is incorrect. I'm in South Texas, shore side, & it only took 5-7 days.
Thanks for sharing your experience!
I like my mystery snails a little bit more, but some times, ALOT, I will find egg cluches around the outside of the tank, on the stand, the wall, outside of the glass, it is no big deal , I kind of like finding eggs everywhere, like, where are the gonna lay tonight, where will I find them in the morning. They also like to eat my jave ferns, no other plants, just the java ferns, if there are any exposing plant roots they will eat those ashwell, I have buckweed in one of my tanks, the snails like to cruse up side down on the buckweed and I love it. So, long story short I enjoy the personality of the mystery snails more. I swere tho, narite snails eat algee WAY BETTER than the mystery snails. The only thing bad is that if you have a large cat fish, I have a 6 inch feather fin, the cat fish will suck the snail out of the shell, I don't mind it because the cat fish is getting good nutrition from it, but It is also kind of sad. I have been collecting the empty snail shells which Is kind of fun, i have 13 so far, from the past 2 months. Which if you think about it is not too many, overall, I prefer my mystery snails for their appearance, personality, and things you can do with them, mostly breeding, but if I or you have a algee problem, narite snails do the job the best. I love them all but the mystery snails take the cake for me. I hope someone takes the time to read this and gets something out of it, thank you!!!! Have a wonderful day!!😁😁
I’ve never actually been able to keep nerites they wouldn’t survive in my water but the mystery snails thrived only problem I’ve ever had is because I have a 6.5 ph I just add calcium supplements and they do amazing
I bought some nerite snails when I bought my first crawfish and months later they’re still alive. I figured my crawfish would just not bother any snails so I bought some mystery snails and they all died within 2 days.
Thankyou for mentioning snails need a lid on the aquarium !!
We have a dog, and snails can be lethal to them because of parasites like the ringworm. And with some bad luck they will eat it.
I had 4 nerite, only 1 survived (king koopa). Have 3 mystery
So far I’ve only had nerite snails and I’m loving them. They’re in smaller tanks (one with a betta) and I don’t want breeding there. I’ll be putting a couple mystery snails in my bigger tank though. This video just made me want both. Lol
you forgot to mention nerites have both female and male sex. i have one male nerite for almost a year and hasn't laid a single egg. however it is very hard to sex them so its more of a luck. if you get a female she will start laying eggs in several weeks or few months if not right away. also nerites poop A LOT. the more algae they, eat the more they poop. they are great for diatom/brown algae that is common in new tanks
Well somehow freshwater limpets got into my tank and are leaving little marks on the leaves of my hundreds of £ worth of anubius that I have been collecting for a long time now 😫😫
i'd almost wish these snails could get to 30cm. now that would be a freaky tank.
Love my mystery snails. They are active acrobatic snails. My nerite is boring.
I got mystery snail or maybe looks alike mystery snail. day eat all my plants vigorously. and i read about apple snail which is very invasive. how can we tell the differences between mystery snail and apple snail?
I have nerite snails and there are Abby snails everywhere. Let me emphasize I did not use brackish water, they will in regular freshwater
I have one gold mystery snail and the load of waste is insane. Besides that I think they are cute. 🐌
My nerite sails just had babies in a fresh water tank and I have one mystery snail that was a baby when I got him or her...I’m so confused lol
This is why I love my Rams Horns. They tend to do the job in-between these two snails and get into smaller nooks. Having all three is always a good thing
Anyone else's nerite spend 90% of the time pretending to be a rock?
Ya, they tend to do that. :-)
Omg this is what I need to know
Good to hear!
I had a pair of nerite snails in a tank and the last one ended up living for 6 years
Great video. ...very informative as usual, we love mystery snails. One piece of advice if you have a HOB or canister filter with a intake tube, please make sure to put a intake sponge on it to protect the snail.
Great point!
Mystery snails DO eat plants ............fact, not just dead ones
Wow nice. I have a new breed mystery snails.
I got 4 nerite and 4 mystery snails still have my nerite but 3 of my mystery snails died but I love my mystery snail it has more of a personality
5:06 - nerite snails won't breed in freshwatr tanks.
6:23 - snails will get out of tank without lid.
I like myst tu snails but I don't like the way they layeggs it looks nasty
Team Mystery over here. I love them, they've really opened my heart to invertebrates and will always hold a special place in my heart.
Nerites for the win mystery snails are great if you love their activity but they produce an ungodly amount of waste had 4 in my 30 gal the entire bottom was littered in waste even with weekly gravel vacuuming
Thank you for posting; this was very helpful!! 💙 I have 3 clutches of mystery/apple snail eggs, 1st one hatched about twi weeks or so ago, 2nd was laid a little over a week ago and 3rd was laid a few days ago and I have plenty of algae and other food for them!! I prefer apple snails but thinking about getting a nerite to add to the tank!!
I'm hoping to get a female mystery snail so I can use the unfertilized eggs as food for my pet isopods
Thank you for this. Hmmm snails you say interesting
Just went downstairs to get some water and saw the betta sleeping with her head nudging up against the nerite in the red root floaters.
My nerite snails havnt lasted long :/ only 2 weeks
Any mystery snails I bought ended up as empty shells!
I loved nerite snails until they laid a million eggs in my tank and made it look horrible.
My nerite snail has been living for 3 years but I have well water not city water
A lake close by has giant Chinese mystery snails. Should I be concerned about placing some in my sump to help clean things up?
Possibly, if they serve as an intermediate host for a parasite. You wouldn't have long term effects because usually a third host is required to complete a life cycle, but it could potentially do some damage to fish if something was released in the short term.
Thank you for that excellent analysis of Mystery and Nerite snails.
Can Nerite snails live in a freshwater sump for the purpose of keeping debris to a minimum?
Maybe, but they still may need to be fed.
