My nerite snail went missing, and we couldn't find him. We looked on the floor and all around but never found him, so we assumed he must be hiding in the tank somewhere. THREE WEEKS LATER, when we moved the table the tank had been sitting on, we found him. Turns out, he had fallen into the crack between the wall and the carpet which is why we didn't see him. He was completely dry, but I saw that his foot was intact and closed, so I figured it couldn't hurt to put him in a cup of water and see if there was any chance he was alive. After about an hour, I noticed his foot moved! I thought it may just be because it was rehydration, and not actually moving, so I waited. Another hour passed, and his foot moved more! Another hour, and I saw his little face and an antenna poking out! He lived! I couldn't believe it! 3 weeks on a carpet! Incredible! So anyway, it's been 4 months since then, and he is alive and well. We've decided to call him Lazarus. It fits, ya know? 😂
I have two ten gallon tanks on a metal rack; one on the top and one on the middle. I have an itty bitty nerite on the top one, and one day I somehow found him on the lid of the bottom one?? The rack doesn't touch the wall, the cords don't touch the tanks, so I have zero clue how he got there. My lights are maybe two inches above the lid so I thought he'd scorched himself, but I put him back in the tank just in case and sure enough he came out a little bit after and went back to crawling around as if nothing had happened. They're crazy xD Love them
I just saw another story on another video where someones mystery snail went missing and they found it weeks later on their daughters crayons box and decided to name it laz, short for Lazarus lol
@@stukablyat7136 I've lost way more nerites, than mystery snails. Nerites not only leave the water. They tend to stay out. If I didn't remove the lid, and manually put them back in the water, they would stay out until dead.
Nerites are more thorough cleaners, whereas mystery snails will move around more and hit more areas of the tank cleaning a bit here and there. I like to mix and match...i find that Nerites and mysteries work well as a team.
@@paigek9923 I like this idea. I have a 10 gallon that I have been growing an algae farm. My Betta loves the privacy but I think it’s time to get a couple if snails in.
I had two Nerite snails who recently passed. They were both over 3 years old. The last few months of their lives their shells were very tattered, but after learning their life expectancy, it was probably due to aging. They were great at cleaning algae. Now that they’re gone, I realize just how much work they really did. 😢
I love both nerite’s and mystery’s! My nerites have been better at algae eating, as my mystery is in a guppy tank that gets a LOT of food. He’d rather eat fallen flakes than any algae on the glass. That being said, he’s so much more active, almost to the point of being playful. I love him to bits.
How many Nerites and Mystery Snails do you recommend for a 20 or 29 Gallon breeding guppy tank? And in a5-10 Gallon Betta Tank? The tanks will be planted.
I have 3 nerite snails and 1 mystery snail. I know for sure that at least 2 of my nerites are female because I had one in a separate tank for a little bit to clean it up a little bit and it got eggs everywhere and I had 2 in my other tank and there were eggs in there too now they’re all in the same tank
This is why I love my Rams Horns. They tend to do the job in-between these two snails and get into smaller nooks. Having all three is always a good thing
I never thought it would be so hard to figure out what kind of snail I wanted 🤣 I ended up going with nerite snails because, for now, I only have smaller tanks and I figured I would run out of room quickly with mystery snails. I was like Joanna at first, I like snails, but I just wasn't ready to become a snail farmer 😁 But I'm learning how each inhabitant of my little ecosystem has a purpose in a planted tank. As far as the actual snails go though... Mystery snails are so beautiful and a lot more interesting as far as their personalities go. My 12 year old grandson loves snails.. he went out and caught yard snails and some snails out of a pond a couple of months ago.I told him if he takes good care of them,I will set him up a snail tank. I figured it would be a perfect way for him to learn and enjoy our hobby. When I finally get all the fish moved around where they're going, I'm going to surprise him and give him one of these little tanks I have. Maybe, I can figure out a way to get some from you 😁🐌🐟🌿🌱
I went with nerites because they are in betta tanks - their antennae are fine and harder to see, making them less likely to be a target for a betta that confuses them for a worm. :)
Here is my take i have kept them both mystery snails will eat soft leave plants not tough plants nerite snails will not eat even the softest leaf. I have had success at present keeping nerite snails with mbuna cichlids mystery snails antennas are too big so the cichlids pick them to death. Nerite can also survive with aquarium salt in the water even at high levels mystery snails will suffer with salt. But in my keeping, mystery snail are far better cleaners as far as detritus goes and move a lot faster than nerite snails covering more tank Floor faster. Nerite snails are a little better at algae control. But the mystery snail is a better overall cleaner.LIKE THEM BOTH THANKS JASON!
Mystery snails actually breath above water. Lots of times are shipped out of water in damp clothes. They also need high calcium in their diets to keep the shell quality. Great video Jason!! Really enjoy watching.
Recently had a marina heater that decided to heat my tank to over 40c and cook my tank of bloody marys all dead $3000 worth , but the nerite snail who was in there survived . I love them .
I have always preferred nerite over mystery snails when I had fresh water tanks. They are great algae eaters and have such cool shells. Now that I have only saltwater I still have nerite snails and they even successfully bred in my tank once. It was fun watching the baby snails grow! 😊
I didn't realize this video was released just a few minutes ago! I thought it was suggested to me because I've been searching what snails to get. Thank you! :)
What a great show . Packed with information knowledge comparisons . This helps simplifies the concept of how important they are in the most important part of fish keeping . The clean up crew ( this could be another show you can do for us rookie fish keepers . ) 🧐🤔😊 I’m confused on the make up of cleaning crews . How to rank and assemble the best team . What is the best line up a guy could have . 5 corys or 3 plecos or an army of ram horns .🧐 this brings me back to your show . I’m 68 started in 1968 friends sister had a 10 gallon etc . I can’t believe how the hobby has changed . Everyone one on UA-cam helps each other is so cool . Sorry so long but where I’m heading is the older you get the more you drift towards the Father Fish side of things . Work smarter not harder . LOL 😳 Personally my favorite , Discus all around cool . As far as a clean up crew ( sails ) 👍 . Well maybe you could do another informational show again . Like what went around was snails carry diseases . Liking Discus this freaked me out . Well I’ll stop bending your ear . Thank you so much for all time and effort . Enough said . 🙏👨👩👧👦🇺🇸😎
I think snails are vastly under appreciated and overlooked. My Mystery Snails have done a beautiful job keeping my tanks clean. I barely have to scrub!
So to provide actual explanation of why these snails won't eat plants, and where that rumor comes from, so people can understand and be more comfortable: Plants have strong cell walls that are difficult to digest. Algae doesn't have that cell wall. Snails don't want to eat plants, they won't get enough energy back for the effort of tearing down the cell wall. But when you first add a plant to your tank, it will start to melt its aboveground parts to regrow as underwater parts. That breaks down the cell wall and then your snails are all over it. Eating what the plant was going to lose anyways. Snails will definitely eat dead or sick plants. And that's good too.
This was really helpful! I was going to get a mystery snail. But I only want 3 or 4 for my 50 gallon tank. Maybe 5. But you informed me that they would breed like crazy!
My first mystery snail (gold and white) hid in its shell a lot, barely ate, it was a rarity to see it going around the tank at all. I'd put in algae wafers for it and it never touched it. Thought maybe that's just how those snails are, had it for a while too so wasn't sick. Then the second mystery snail I got (brown)... moved around a ton, DEVOURED ANYTHING IN ITS PATH, I was so weirded out that not only did it eat the algae wafers but also any blanched veggies I'd put in. And also the plants. Straight up ate my plants. I could not stop it. Don't know if I want to try the mystery snail again, I love snails but worried about the poop and the plants. But nerite snails I'd be worried about getting a female and getting eggs everywhere.
I breed mystery commonly and I will say watersprite is one plant they will eat regardless of how well it's doing. If you can get the plant big it's growth will stay ahead of the hunger, but new watersprite plants are toast with mystery snails
Thank you for posting; this was very helpful!! 💙 I have 3 clutches of mystery/apple snail eggs, 1st one hatched about twi weeks or so ago, 2nd was laid a little over a week ago and 3rd was laid a few days ago and I have plenty of algae and other food for them!! I prefer apple snails but thinking about getting a nerite to add to the tank!!
Mystery snails! I have both in my tank with my fancy goldfish and man do they move! It’s so cool to see their cute little faces and to watch them explore. My nerites are never very active and I don’t like that you can’t see their little faces lol. I have 1 male mystery snail that gets around.... but have never had eggs ☹️
Great video. ...very informative as usual, we love mystery snails. One piece of advice if you have a HOB or canister filter with a intake tube, please make sure to put a intake sponge on it to protect the snail.
So I got Nerites because I was told they were awesome algae eaters. First few days, they were all over the tank. After that, they only hid under the rocks and logs. Got some mysteries and the glass hasn’t had to be cleaned since. Not sure what happened but that’s my experience so far.
My mystery snails are marathon runners :D I've had them for about 3 months and haven't seen any egg patches, but I do have tiger barbs in that probably munch of those eggs :)
I just got 2 nerite snails that's why I'm here. Heard they clean up better but I like the mystery snails when they move around outside of their shells they look alot nicer to me.
4:21-4:29 what's the tiny living thing moving around on the glass, approx 1 inch East - to South of the small brown snail ? In fact watching that part for the 3rd time I think I saw around 3 small moving things on the front glass..
I started with nerites and they never really did much. They sat on one of the rocks but then just burrowed into the substrate. After I got my mystery snails, they've been moving around eating and the nerites take major searching to find.
This video was super informative. I actually was watching it to see what kind of snail appeared in my tank. At first I thought it was a parasite my fish pooped out...long story but happened to see it after medicating my fish. Then i remembered the tank was second hand and the guy who sold it to me might have mentioned he bred ramshorn snails. I took it to pet store but the crazy good lady for knowing stuff had day off yesterday but three or 4 people said definitely a snail. I gave it to a guy buying snails. It was super pretty but I didn't think to take a picture. I just know snails and Goldfish aren't necessarily best combination. Now I am thinking it had patterning like one of these nitrate snails but it had a shell that went left like a ramshorn snail.
Snails are awesome I got a second tank just for them so they could multiply 😈 and I forgot to add I love it when they let go of the glass and just drop ☺️
So far I’ve only had nerite snails and I’m loving them. They’re in smaller tanks (one with a betta) and I don’t want breeding there. I’ll be putting a couple mystery snails in my bigger tank though. This video just made me want both. Lol
I haven’t seen such an authoritative video on aquarium snails from any of the big channels. Excellent video except for one small fact. Mystery Snails DO NOT overrun your tank. Their eggs are always laid outside the water and you just pick them and bury them in your garden or yard. So the risk of them OVERUNNING is zero !
I like them both. I have both in my two planted tanks. I have nerites only in my multi tank. I have a 40 breeder that has pixi snails. They eats plants so they are in a tank without plants.
I could never keep a mystery snail alive! My first nerite snail is doing fantastic though. And I love it. I'll probably adopt another one. For my second Betta fish tank.
Very useful video as always thanks. 🙏. I have 5 tanks and in all of them i keep mistery snails. They are doing a great job and not eating my plants. snails are great helping you to keep clean the tank. 👍👍👌👌😊
I love them both because they are excellent at eating algae. The only problem I have with Nerites is that they lay little white eggs EVERYWHERE! The eggs don't hatch, but they can become an eye sore and are difficult to remove from some surfaces like wood. When I say everywhere, I mean it's like a plague! Your videos are always so informative. Thanks.
I love Clinton Corona. They’re great in nano (and other) tanks. No Eggs! No breading. Total snail number control. And they do a great job eating alg. Some do have nice colours on the shell. Eventually in Sweden, it’s hard to find others then the yellow/black ones.
thanks for the video. I had a Nerite snail and he recently died. I had it 4 months. I am not sure why it died. I have a 6.5 gal tank. I maintain my water weekly changing 25 percent. I treat the water and test the water using test strips. All is good. My fish are doing well. I plan on getting another one.
I have 1 zebra nerite, 1 onion or tire track nerite, 3 magenta mystery snails, 1 ivory mystery, my golden mystery passed away 😔, 1 rabbit snail and 5 Japanese trapdoor snails. I enjoy them all. I didn't realize how much I'd enjoy snails when I started my aquariums but they're a must have!! 🐌🐚🐠
I bought 3 mystery snails. All 3 female. My daughter took the younger & smallest 2 for her 10 gallon with her betta. I took the bigger one to put in my 5 gallon with my betta. Now it's 4 months later & my lone snail decided to lay the eggs she got fertalized before I bought her. Now I have over 50 baby snails & I had to temporarily move them to a 1 gallon tank with sponge filter because my big male betta (3.5 inch without fins) was eating every one he saw. So for his well being & theirs I had to remove them. Don't worry I change the water a few times a week and it's only until after next week which will be their 2nd wk of life. Then they'll be big enough my betta can't eat them & he's not aggressive at all, doesn't attack the food when I feed him like some of my others do nor mess with my snail. However I would like to clear up some misinformation I kept finding when I was looking for how to take care of these snail babies. Maybe you can include this in a video some time. Everything I read and watched about mystery snail breeding said the eggs hatch after 3-4 weeks. Well if conditions are right, they will hatch sooner. My snails hatched in 7 days or less. I know because I change my aquariums water every Sunday. When I took the lid off the weekend before last to change the water, no eggs, everything normal. Took my lid of this past Friday, 5 egg clutches had been laid. Sunday 1 full clutch was hatching & a few from some of the others had started hatching. I only saved the one clutch. The others I left. Then a few days later after water change, another small clutch had been laid & a few hatched out. So there are 4 baby snails that have survived the betta tank & they are now just a bit bigger than betta pellets so he just looks at them like he's curious or thinking about trying to eat them, then swims off. So the 2-4 week hatch time is incorrect. I'm in South Texas, shore side, & it only took 5-7 days.
Thankyou for mentioning snails need a lid on the aquarium !! We have a dog, and snails can be lethal to them because of parasites like the ringworm. And with some bad luck they will eat it.
I’ve never actually been able to keep nerites they wouldn’t survive in my water but the mystery snails thrived only problem I’ve ever had is because I have a 6.5 ph I just add calcium supplements and they do amazing
I had 5 mystery snails in three tanks. One snail in each tank died. I added a Nerite snail and it seems to do better and is much more active. (Freshwater community tanks are stable and range KH 4-5, pH 6.8-7.2, temp 76-78). I still clean out snail egg clutches with each water change. Snail deaths seem to coincide with water changes (water conditioner chemicals?)
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Yes I think so too. I did a water change two days ago and a complete water panel today. GH 42. KH 2 pH 7.4 -- other measures are good (i.e. no NH3/NH4, NO2, NO3, etc.) I added 5 lbs of crushed coral to my washed river stone gravel bed. Its a 55 gal with10 medium Angels, 2 algae eaters, 1 Cory, one mystery snail and two tiny Nerite plus a host of live plant like Italian Val. I am focused on the KH since the pH seems to float with it. Also, I had a lot of petrified wood (highly mineralized but removed half of it. Another comment made to me was that my tanks are too clean but they I use a sponge filter and alternate HOB filters. Since them I have left a little algae growth to remain after cleaning. Water is polished looking. Temp is 78F. (I don't know why I shared all this. I guess I needed to.)
I'm with team mystery snails cause I just love their behavior and colors. But nerites I would say are more useful? While I'm not sure about that as as well as my mysteries eating all dead things.
Good thing I have 12 mystery snails and 3 eggs clutches and 14 nerite snails ❤️❤️ 😁😁 I love them all And also I have some rabbit snails I lost count 😄 but I have a lot of snails. I’m a snail hog
I experienced mistery snails eating the roots of some floating plants, if a part of a plant is very tender which most plants don't have, they will be able to damage it, more so if it's melting or rotting. Nerite and Amano shrimp are algae eating machines. The Nerite snail is the king that absolutely devour algae, just one of them will make a HUGE difference in a 20g tank, and the Amano shrimp are the queens giving a fine polish over time, but you need a lot of them, and they will mainly eat off of rocks, wood and wider leaves that they can get a grip on. Mystery snails are best used if you want to have a larger outstanding display snail and is very similar the apple snail that is a little bigger. But be aware ! Mystery snails will starve if they will eat only fish scraps !!! They are large scavengers that need a lot of food and they will fall out of you're aquarium when they lay their eggs !!! They climb out up to 3-4 inches out of the water to lay a egg cluster and then go back in to the water!!! They lay tens up to a hundred eggs and when the little baby snails hatch they stay inside the cluster too eat off of it and then munch on the exterior of the cluster and slides down in to the water on a slimy mucus trail ozzing from the egg cluster. You can easily over breed them and be overrun with baby snails that will grow in time to be massive snails. Best to just let one egg cluster to be laid naturally so that you can ensure the survival of the next generation and remove all the new egg clusters or you're aquarium will have swarms upon swarms of baby mistery snails. But all of this is stupid easy to control, so don't panic.
I have a mystery snail that likes to eat the soft side leaves on hornwort...I don't mind since I have lots of it, but I've never had one do that before. He just leaves the barren main stalk, which of course, looks terrible.
I have a blue mystery snail in my 29 gallon tank. I had an infestation of black beard algae in my tank that WOULD NOT GO AWAY. after adding my blue mystery snail, boom. Algae is almost completely gone. The substrate also looks soooo clean
mystery/apple snails kept eating my java ferns and duckweed... and nerite snails are cool but they need brackish water to breed so I prefer ramshorn and MTT snails.
Sorry i couldnt see your answer to my question. So if u can answer again hopefully I'll be able to find it. I will be setting up a new tank next month. I plan on using a live bacteria of course to jump start it. I want to add a mystery snail. At what time can i add one so there is actually food for them being it will be a new tank? Thank you
I have one neurite snail a 10 gallon Betta tank and she leaves eggs all over the Driftwood, they look like sesame seeds. I think it’s kind of cute it doesn’t bother me at all.
How did that go? I have a small tank. 3gl and anubias. I really just want plants but they have black alge... so if I get a Narita snail.... I was wondering about going ahead and doing one betta?
I am waaay more connected with my mystery snails, they each have their own personality and are so fun to watch. Nerites are definitely better at eating algae tho
I got some hitch-hikers on my plants. Don't need to buy any now.. havent got a clue what they are. Only a couple of millimetres big.. shiny but see through. Guess I will know when they're bigger
Just wondering...how are the hitch-hiker snails doing? It's really scary keeping them since there's high chance of them being bladder snails - scary pests in the aquarium...
Thanks for the information! A few questions: A. Can nerite snails breed in a tank with lake tangsnika type parameters (I.e. salt & pH) ? B. You have snails in the shell dweller tanks? Is you pH and hardness high? My son tried nerites with pH 8 and hard water. The lasted a few months. He believes the “multies” did them in. They did use one asa football. C. Any comments on trumpet snails? I read they do better in harder water and burrow so they are less likely to be abused. Thanks again! Your insight is appreciated, Jim
The nerites need brackish to salt water to breed so they won't breed in cichlids tanks. I have only found they survive in certain shellie tanks - my caudopunks, similis and julidochromis ornatus leave them alone, but mutlis seem to kill them. I love trumpet snails - they come out at night and go back into the substrate when the lights come on! They breed like crazy though.
Not sure if I should go Mystery or Nerite. What kind of aquatic snails are very active and won’t quickly overpopulate? I enjoy meditation while watching snails eat algae off tank glass, but I am not sure what kind of snails to get that enjoy Hoover-vacuuming against glass. Their weird little barbed tongue mouths are so cool.
I got some mystery snails and nerites (tigers and zebras) from Flip Aquatics. They throw in a bonus snail for each group and they are super healthy and doing a great job in my tank. The mystery snails are larger, more active and easy to see, so more entertaining. They also have a recognizable face, which I like. The nerites focus in on certain areas and may spend hours cleaning one tank ornament. The only con with the nerites snails is that they’re smaller and can escape easier. I have a Fluval flex and they fit between the internal wall and lid and get in the filter compartment. People who complain about them eating plants probably got apple snails and not mystery snails. You can find comparison photos online to tell exactly what you have.
At 1:24 (bottom front left of the tank) I noticed you have a Mystery Snail with shell damage, I have two with similar damage which worries me although they do not seem to be affected by it. My pH is between 6.4 - 6.8 with kH: 2 and gH:5. I recently added crushed coral to my canister filter. The pH had suddenly dropped to acidic before I started working on correcting the inbalance; my tank also has CO2. Any advice would be very much appreciated. 😊
I have both... dont love the little white eggs. Bit they arent terrible.. if there is a bunch I will just scrape them off and then no big deal... hmmm... could I take them out and put them in a brackish tank? Or is it to late at that point for them to hatch?
I have been looking for nerite snails everywhere. My local pet store got in one of them. So I bought that one, four yellow mystery snails, and four blue mystery snails. The nerite snail and the yellow mystery snails were cross breeding with the nerite. I now have close to a hundred baby snails in all different shapes and colors. And there are six more clutches of eggs getting ready to hatch. The pet store lady said that she has never had any of her snails to lay eggs and I can't get mine to stop.
Ohh...I want to see pictures but don't know if you can post pics on UA-cam comments. Can you make a video on UA-cam? Let me knos if you do and please read my comment above
I don't think I have ever heard of the two being able to hybridize. I'd love a follow up in a couple months when they a larger if they wound up being a cross between the blues and golds or something else.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Right now I have babies that are yellow and black striped, dark and light brown striped, Hershey brown, solid black shell and body, albinos, some with green and brown, some 2 toned brown, yellow with gray bodies, and 2 toned yellow and white. They are really pretty and growing fast and I still have 6 clutches of eggs getting ready to hatch. They are keeping my tank spotless.

Nerite snails not only do their job but they don't specialize in dying. They are awesome.
I have left Mystery Snails in tanks I treated with Meds almost guaranteed to kill them. Never lost one.

I would think they would be a tasty treat for fish and shrimp too? I've got three nerites and no eggs in 5 weeks... perhaps I have all boys.
This is why I love my Rams Horns. They tend to do the job in-between these two snails and get into smaller nooks. Having all three is always a good thing
Team Mystery over here. I love them, they've really opened my heart to invertebrates and will always hold a special place in my heart.
Maybe, I can figure out a way to get some from you 😁🐌🐟🌿🌱
Cool! The nerites will be good for your tanks. :-)
I went with nerites because they are in betta tanks - their antennae are fine and harder to see, making them less likely to be a target for a betta that confuses them for a worm. :)
Jason: nerites laying eggs all over the place is a nuisance
My betta: nip nip nip don’t mind if I do
😂
Do your bettas just eat the eggs or do they eat the snails too?
@@moniquevandeplas5210 mine just eats the eggs
I wish mine would eat the eggs
Nerrites have cooler shells, but mystery snails are bigger and way more active IMO
Have you seen high grade magenta or purple mysterys?! Eye Gems of the fresh water world.
Nerite snail eat mores algaes
My nertites are super active
Mystery snails have more personality too.
Mystery snails actually breath above water. Lots of times are shipped out of water in damp clothes. They also need high calcium in their diets to keep the shell quality. Great video Jason!! Really enjoy watching.
What calcium should I add to my tank?
@@lauraburcham8427 I like to make snello and add calcium directly to the food
Recently had a marina heater that decided to heat my tank to over 40c and cook my tank of bloody marys all dead $3000 worth , but the nerite snail who was in there survived .
I love them .
I'm glad something survived!
Mystery snail gets about 1.5 inches and live 1.5 ish years. My snail who’s 3 years old and pushing 4inches “is that a challenge?”
You own a Apple snail.
yeah i think thats an apple snail
Mine even laid eggs and now I own an ARMY
I have two nerites and they are the BEST algae eaters I’ve ever had. Mystery snails are more fun to watch but nerite snails do better work.
I normally have Nerite snails in my tanks, simply because they create less waste than the Mystery Snails, also they have pretty cool shell designs.
Well we have a lid secured with books on top because our nerite snail keeps escaping, popping UP the lid from underneath and leaving.
I really enjoy both the Nerite & Mystery Snails equally. My well water is rather hard & they tend to do nicely. 👍 🐚🐌🐌🐠🐌🐌🐛🐌
I have always preferred nerite over mystery snails when I had fresh water tanks. They are great algae eaters and have such cool shells. Now that I have only saltwater I still have nerite snails and they even successfully bred in my tank once. It was fun watching the baby snails grow! 😊
That's cool that you got snail babies! :-)
I didn't realize this video was released just a few minutes ago! I thought it was suggested to me because I've been searching what snails to get. Thank you! :)
It was my ESP. Haha
I've always been a fan of both but learn a little more toward the Nerite. 😊
So to provide actual explanation of why these snails won't eat plants, and where that rumor comes from, so people can understand and be more comfortable:
Plants have strong cell walls that are difficult to digest.
As always thanks for clearing up questions running through my head as I can’t sleep!
The shape of mystery snail shells is what really makes me love them, ramshorns are even better imo
I would trust this man with my life tbh, he gives off good vibes
Appreciate you being here!
I breed mystery commonly and I will say watersprite is one plant they will eat regardless of how well it's doing. If you can get the plant big it's growth will stay ahead of the hunger, but new watersprite plants are toast with mystery snails
Watching from Kentucky “ The Bluegrass State “ ….. Thanks for the information and thank you for what you do for the hobby .
This was my first video of yours I've seen. You are perfectly informative and I love the close ups !
Thanks for being here!
This helped me ID my new snails that have appeared, Mystery snails as they are multiplying like crazy.
Thank you for that excellent analysis of Mystery and Nerite snails.
I prefer apple snails but thinking about getting a nerite to add to the tank!!
we got Nerite snails because after contacting or going to 6 local fish stores NOBODY had mystery snails! Everyone had been out of stock for months!
Great point!
So I got Nerites because I was told they were awesome algae eaters. First few days, they were all over the tank. After that, they only hid under the rocks and logs. Got some mysteries and the glass hasn’t had to be cleaned since. Not sure what happened but that’s my experience so far.
Do you have the nerites and mystery’s in together
My mystery snails are marathon runners :D I've had them for about 3 months and haven't seen any egg patches, but I do have tiger barbs in that probably munch of those eggs :)
I just got 2 nerite snails that's why I'm here. Heard they clean up better but I like the mystery snails when they move around outside of their shells they look alot nicer to me.
4:21-4:29 what's the tiny living thing moving around on the glass, approx 1 inch East - to South of the small brown snail ? In fact watching that part for the 3rd time I think I saw around 3 small moving things on the front glass..
Probably detritus worms.
I've got nerites in all my tanks. I love them! They're super cute!! Not interested in breeding, so I'm a nerite fan.
Perfect timing. I'm currently awaiting the arrival of both snail types. With this info I have decided to mix them for tag teaming. Thanks for sharing!
Cool !
I have both and they do fine in both my Cichlid and Vampire crab tanks. Both are good janitors.
Oh wow i had a 4 year old nerite snail! I prefer Them because they are smaller and i dont need to breed:)
I used 1/2 marine salt for one gallon of water. For hatching narit snails eggs
I like them both. I have both in my two planted tanks. I have nerites only in my multi tank. I have a 40 breeder that has pixi snails. They eats plants so they are in a tank without plants.
I love my nerites 💕 I have Chicago water so I do feel a bit helpless when I see my snails’ shells slowly eroding 😞
Wonder shells!
Calcium! Even Tums will do.
👍👍👌👌😊
Great video, the information is just what I needed. And your photography is beautiful. Thanks so much.
Thank you!
Thanks.
Thank you!
It could have just been old (never know just how old it was when you got it).
Ya, most people who get them for the first time start to realize they are fun to watch. :-)
Thanks for sharing your experience!
Thankyou for mentioning snails need a lid on the aquarium !!
We have a dog, and snails can be lethal to them because of parasites like the ringworm. And with some bad luck they will eat it.
I’ve only used nerites for the last ten years but lost my supplier. I think I’ll give the mystery snails a try.
Have fun!
Maybe that or fluctuations in pH with the lower KH?
Good thing I have 12 mystery snails and 3 eggs clutches and 14 nerite snails ❤️❤️ 😁😁 I love them all
And also I have some rabbit snails I lost count 😄 but I have a lot of snails. I’m a snail hog
I'm planning to breed mystery snail. I'm continue doing my research on mystery snails. Today I bought a 40 gallons tank.
You’re video was very helpful thank you. Im thinking about getting 2 mystery snails for my betta.
I’d have to say mystery snails are my favorite between how hardy they are and the they can breed easily
Is it normal for a mystery snail to be still for after breeding?
beautiful snails there , i think they all look great for a snail tank
I have a mystery snail that likes to eat the soft side leaves on hornwort...I don't mind since I have lots of it, but I've never had one do that before. He just leaves the barren main stalk, which of course, looks terrible.
Crazy! :-)
Very good informative video. Thank you very much, I'm thinking to get mystery snails
They are cool!
I have a blue mystery snail in my 29 gallon tank. I had an infestation of black beard algae in my tank that WOULD NOT GO AWAY. after adding my blue mystery snail, boom. Algae is almost completely gone. The substrate also looks soooo clean
I love nerites because they don't get too big and they don't breed! But my favorite are rabbit snails, especially the yellow and orange ones!
mystery/apple snails kept eating my java ferns and duckweed... and nerite snails are cool but they need brackish water to breed so I prefer ramshorn and MTT snails.
I have both! The berries are in my brackish water tank. Mystery’s in all the others.
I hate autocorrect! Nerites! 😂😂😂😂😂
I hate autocorrect! Nerites!! 😂😂😂
I thought maybe berries were just your slang for nerites. Haha
Thank you
I usually feed them sinking foods.
I love the copepods in the mystery snail tank.
Little bitty guys! :-)
Very helpful video! Straight to the point and short. Much appreciated!
Thank you!
Really, really good video. Never seen them compared this well. Thank you!
Thank you !
I have one neurite snail a 10 gallon Betta tank and she leaves eggs all over the Driftwood, they look like sesame seeds. I think it’s kind of cute it doesn’t bother me at all.
Just don't put them on a bun :-)
@@PrimeTimeAquatics okay. I won't
😂
Thank you for the info. I think adding a Nerite snail would be a good addition to my Betta aquarium.
A few questions:
Your insight is appreciated,
Jim
Definitely mystery snails in your case. Just remove the egg clutches if you see them on the top of your tank and they won't overpopulate.
I got 4 nerite and 4 mystery snails still have my nerite but 3 of my mystery snails died but I love my mystery snail it has more of a personality
Thanks for sharing! Glad you like them!
I think you are on the right track bringing up the GH and KH.
CO2 must be turned off at night to avoid increase in water acidity (in most tank conditions)...I prefer egg shells over corals though...
i have 2 male mistery snails because i dont want them to breed :) they are awesome and they do remove dead parts of the plants
Ive had nerites breed in freshwater.A lot of the babies died, but a few lived.
I have both... dont love the little white eggs. Bit they arent terrible.. if there is a bunch I will just scrape them off and then no big deal... hmmm... could I take them out and put them in a brackish tank? Or is it to late at that point for them to hatch?
Good question. I'm actually not sure, but if you try it let me know if it works!
