I've been researching nearly obsessively these past several months to get my 36 gallon stocked (upgraded to 75 of course lol) and your channel/videos, are by far my favorite. You're fantastic at educating, and have helped me a lot. Just wanted to take the time to thank you guys and hope you have a great day
@@theanswer5431 oh I have both lol I actually can't imagine having a shrimp tank without snails. I have a 20 long with a sponge divider (got it from flip aquatics) with red shrimp on left and blue on right, with rabbit snails and red racers on both sides. I also have a purple mystery snail in my guppy grow out tank to eat leftover food
I have recently added lots of neocaridina shrimps to my heavily planted 75 and I’ve very quickly become obsessed with sitting and watching them. They’re my new favorite thing to watch while drinking my coffee in the morning. I have reds, blues, yellows, and a few others. They’re really fascinating.
I really like the shrimp you showed. I didn’t realize they come in so many beautiful colors. I also like how their little legs keep moving around. They keep my attention. Sincerely, Marty Borst
A lot of times (besides neocaridina) their water parameters aren’t mutual, also they do compete with each other but it’s really hard to kill either so it doesnt really matter. The only major thing id see that keeps them apart is compatibility with other fish, many fish that prey on shrimp won’t prey on snails
I love my 2 Mystery snails and my 3 Amano Shrimp. They add a nice contrast to my 30 Gal. I have Neon and Harlequins 10 each. I have a 5 gal that I haven't stocked yet but I'm thinking shrimp.
Mystery snails! I have both, but I love my mystery snails, even though they sometimes uproot my plants. The fact that they come in so many colors is a plus - but I had no idea they would get so big! I moved them to my 55g where they somewhat get lost in the big tank. My cherry shrimp multiply like the loaves and fishes, but what turned me off to the shrimp was when I found them eating one of my guppies while it was still alive. I get that the guppy must have been dying, but, geez, can’t you wait till it’s dead? That was months ago and I’m still not over it. I’ve been feeling negative towards the shrimp ever since. 🐟🦐😪
How could they eat it if it was even remotely "healthy"? It would be moving lol? I mean I get you in a sense cause I feel bad about it too, but that's just normal bussiness in the fish keeping world and in nature. Gotta get with the flow
@@dimitrijekrstic7567 Dude - it was moving! I’m not begrudging they were cleaning up my tank, but the poor guppy - who was obviously sick - was still alive. I could see him breathing. Yep gotta agree with ya I love snails🥰! Shrimp are great too but they can't go with many different kinds of fish. To be honest I can get any fish to not eat them😰 so shrimp only tanks for me😀
I recently started developing black beard algae in my 29 gal. planted aquarium. So, after a bit of research, I bought a dozen amano shrimp. Unfortunately, my 4 mollies and 1 small angelfish decided they were for them to eat! Within 3 days, an expensive snack was totally gone. My best bet has been using liquid carbon along with cutting feedings down to once per day and reducing light to 6 hours per day. After 2 weeks, algae is almost gone. Thanks for all your wonderful info. Love my mystery snails!
I love them both for different qualities, just like my kids. Lol. Those long graceful antennae and motor mouth constantly working on the glass. Love the ivory color. Red cherry shrimp so active and love to watch them clean and juggle their eggs.
I had a snail in my aquarium when I was a kid and it would ride the bubbles from my bubbler to the top of the tank and then float down to the bottom and do it again over and over
I have to go with the Mystery Snails. 🐌 They are a lot of fun to breed, incubate, observe & their algae cleaning ability is wonderful. Probably have about 200 Mystery Snails combined in all of my aquariums. Good video. 👍📺😎
I have neocaridina shrimps with otocinclus in 15 gallon heavily planted tank .. added my peaceful hyper betta .. some how he hurt himself so i guess he’s going to have his own tank soon with his nerite snails buddies.. maybe amano shrimp? love them all!! Great video! Thank you!
I love both. I my shrimp tank I will put frogbit from shimp tank to my community tank and the mystery snails will eat roots, stems and the leaves. They live the fresh veggies I guess!!
You are absolutely right every snail that I've had has added a part keeping the tank clean 🐌 you just got to have a little love for these little fellas ❤️❤️🐌
@@marypaigeflynn4512 I was initially going to introduce an Assassin snail, but I just can't bring myself to do it. They're cruising around. If it becomes a problem I may consider it but for now they're lovely little guys
Of the snails, Bladder snails are my Favorite. I love watching their antics in the tank, they 'swim' and 'skate' across the surface of the tank, they shake each other off of their shells, and they're funny when they're stretching out to try and reach the next leaf. Today I got my first ever batch of Shrimps though, and I'm completely obsessed. Can't wait for the weekend when I can just stare at them, Super entertaining.
I love Mystery Snails. I like shrimp too but I've never kept them. I have a Gold Mystery Snail. She came by herself but two to three months after I got her she laid a number of clutches on the lid and just under the rim of the tank. The baby snails hatched onto my Leaf canopy for my Betta and I have hundreds of baby snails now.
@Prime Time Aquatics, hi! I was hoping you could help me figure out how many female bettas in a 40 gallon breeder? I’m thinking maybe 8-12 rummy nose tetras as dither fish, and maybe a school of 5-6 corys and a bristle nose pleco as a clean up crew? I don’t know if having a pleco in there will make it over stocked, what do you think? How many bettas can I have with that? It’s gunna be densely planted with really good filtration, thanks!
Happy Monday! Great video. I love both the cherry shrimp and the mystery snail so this is a hard one. If I HAD to pick I'd go with cherry shrimp. Sorry Fluffy! (My ivory mystery snail)
Honorable mention. Amano shrimp. Although you won't be having them breed in a fresh water as the babies have to be raised in salt or brackish water from my understanding. I've got some Amanos on the way right now. Unfortunately not from Flip. Either he's sold out or doesn't currently have any as I didn't see them on his website.
I can keep Amano shrimp and snails just fine. Thinking once I get my aquarium rack/stand set up I can try cherry shrimp again because I have a 5 gallon tank that is super seasoned and I plan on adding all the guppies (20 gallon long tank) and endler's (5.5 gallon tank) into a larger tank (40 gallon breeder tank) from their respective old tanks. Hybrid mutts seem to make some of the most varied and beautiful patterns you will see
I have a Mystery snail, 3 cherry shrimp and about 5 male guppies that I’m waiting to depart this world so I can set up a full blown invert tank. I plan to keep a mix of both snails and shrimp ... which will be SO much easier to feed once my voracious guppies are gone. LOL. I learned the hard way that female Mystery snails are escape artists. Two of them managed to crawl out of covered tanks and fall to their deaths! I’m assuming they did that to lay eggs. Ugh. My male MS is still happily thriving. Never tries to crawl out.
I don’t have very much experience with either. I currently have Amano shrimp and mystery snail. I also have nerite and pagoda snail. I like them all so far.
I was rather caught by surprise when I my mystery snail float, on the wall of thank at the surface, decided to detach from the wall and float across the surface over to a cuttlefish bone that was floating on the surface! I had to go look that one up and indeed, mystery snails can store up air enough to float themselves about the tank, not just down, but any direction! I've only seen my snail do that once, but it was a shocker to see the first time!
My snails break my plants and my shrimp chew the leaves off. The only plant I've found so far that neither can destroy is pothos. (I've discovered recently that they can also grow well under water)
Love them both! My mystery snails hatched babies this weekend, they're so tiny!!😄 Also, I have a bunch of berried shrimp, but my fish most likely will eat the shrimplets, unless they can hide.. Thanks for the suggestion about Flip Aquatics!👍
❤️ Happy Monday! I like my mystery snail but LOVE my shrimp! I lose 20 minutes every time I look at my shrimp tank. Both are relaxing to watch and can bring a great splash of colour to a tank. Mystery snails are great if you mainly view the tank from father away since they’re so much bigger :)
My mystery snail seems to be ill or dying, so I have just bought a horned nerite snail instead to control the algae. And yes, from my experience you should add calcium sources to the water if it is not hard enough. Neutral water gradually gets more acidic in an aquarium if this is not done. Also fish can bite the snail's whiskers, especially the more aggressive ones. Even neon tetras do that.
If you want to limit it, you get rid of their food! You are providing them with something, dead plant matter (which also creates bacteria and algae cause it's food for them), uneaten food, etc.
I love them both. I don’t have any shrimp but I do have 2 dwarf Mexican crayfish. They are very cute but they fight sometimes. The fish don’t bother them but the lobsters are a little snippy.
Another great video :) At 2:45 there is a fish with a mostly yellow body that swims off screen to the left and then another comes from the left that has the same yellow fins but a less yellow body. It swims to the right and the center of the body seems to get a blue hue for a moment in the middle of the screen. I assume both fish are the same species, perhaps one a male or a female or alpha/beta males. What kind of fish is this and do you have a species spotlight video on it? A very attractive looking fish and I would love to know more about it.
there is no "versus" with these 2 wonderful creatures. Best of friends. Mine live with salt and pepper corys, as well. sometimes they play together. I do know that my corys must get an occasional snack of snail fry. nice move, cory...nice move.
I love your vids, very informative. I have a fresh water fish tank but I do put a half of cup of salt in it because I heard it’s healthy for the fresh water fish, I have been for a year but I never had snails, is it okay to put snails in my fish tank or will the salt kill them?
I have gotten into shrimps and I have mystery snails. Lately the mystery snails I've gotten have died as babies. I do have three. I have about six shrimp but I'm worried my tetras are eating them. Tetras are my husbands favorite but not mine. They are all in a 20 gallon tank. Should I set up my other five gallon tanks for my shrimp until they get bigger so my tetras won't eat them? I don't even want the tetras I'm fine with shrimp and snails. What should I do.
I have Golden/Tortoise Mystery Snails and Red Cherry Shrimp but not in the same tanks. The shrimp are in a 200-litre heavily planted community tank, the Golden/Tortoise Snails are in 70-litre and 145-litre (planted) community tanks respectively. Breeding shrimp and snails have never been an issue for me. The excess snails go to my LFS.
I go with snails because I have a Community tank I don't keep mystery snails but MTS ramshorn and nerite snails this combination cannot hardly be beat for scavengers , algae eaters dead plant leaves the whole nine yards. like shrimp but like keep them mostly in their own tank so for a pet I will go for shrimp but for a strong cleaning crew it's hard to beat snails in a community tank
Love my Mystery snails and my shrimp...each have unique qualities and if I can't find one for whatever reason..I panic.. lolol. Then I'm like " Oh there you are...where have you been?" Yes I talk to my snails, shrimp and fish...lolol. if they start answering me I may have to rethink the whole thing!🤪
I think the snails work harder on the algae, but the shrimp do munch on some, and they amuse me so much with their antics. I have to have them both. Good analogy with The Jetsons, zoom zoom zoom. 👍💓👍
You did a species profile on mystery snails right? I have 10 aquariums but only one I can put my two mystery snails 🐌 n but the shells are dissolving and I really believe it’s cause of my hard water but how do I fix that? I’ve tried water softener cuddle bones and even calcium in their diet but the shells still are dissolving.
Hello, what substrate do you guys use? Specific brand etc? Im trying to find an inert aquasoil that doesnt need to be replaced. Is big so not fine sand or etc. not sharp and wont change any water parameters
i had nothing but bad luck with ghost shrimp, they last about a week, and if I change the water. they will be dead the next day. checked water quality and it is fine. My mystery snails are doing great and laying eggs. I have Kuhli loaches and black skirt tetra, they are all doing fine
Ya, they pro ably won’t interact much. The issue I have with ghost shrimp is they never seem to last very long. I have much better luck with Neocaridina shrimp.
How long would you give a snail before determining wether or not they’re dead? My rabbit snail laid dormant for weeks and I thought it was dead till I saw him on the glass.
When you want to relax watch a pack of snails "race" across the glass. When you are bored and need some excitement check out a frenzy of shrimps. I call a tie. No winners or losers! Great topic!!
I prefer shrimp, they're just more beautiful to me, weird alien looking things that they are. But I have both - 3 species of shrimp and 3 species of snails. I like having all this biodiversity, it makes the tank more self-sustaining. I have rosy barbs, that hunt both on cherry shrimp and ramshorn snails, but both breed fast enough to compensate. It's free live food, which is great for the fish.
I want to start working with both but the water with the shrimp is questionable on getting the water perfect for the shrimp. I need perfect water parameters first. As it is I am putting in 20 ponds here shortly to raise all my high end guppy strains as it is and it's my understanding that having Guppies with them would have unstable water parameters at times so a lot to think about.
If you have water conducive for breeding guppies - neocaridina shrimp and mystery snails shouldn't be an issue (shrimp in their own tank or with the snails).
I just recently set up my first ever neo shrimp tank and added two zebra horn nerite snails. It's doing absolutely famously and I'd love to share the progress. Do you have a Discord or other community outside of UA-cam? Either way, thanks for the content!
Hi, I have a 20G long shrimp tank, just shrimp, no fish. How many Mystery Snails can I add to it. I want them for their bioload, so my good bacteria does not crash. TY
I once got a mystery snail/Apple snail it was so cool looking and huge! The problem with it was it ate all of my plants!! It was so big I could see its mouth bite off pices of the plant, Choo it up the poo it out!! I will never get another snail like that again

They should grow to full size mystery snails!
Love the shrimp's acrobatics.
But how do you limit their breeding activity?
Great video as always 😊
I usually don't. People around me like to buy them :-)
If you want to limit it, you get rid of their food! You are providing them with something, dead plant matter (which also creates bacteria and algae cause it's food for them), uneaten food, etc.
Entertaining vid as always. This comment is for the UA-cam algorithm!!
Personally, I love my Mystery snails. I'm going to add some new ones to the two I have when I get a bigger tank next month.
Got them both, but I love the snails. They are so big and a little clumsy. Also you can remove the offspring, it is harder with shrimps.
I love them both. I don’t have any shrimp but I do have 2 dwarf Mexican crayfish. They are very cute but they fight sometimes. The fish don’t bother them but the lobsters are a little snippy.
Those are cool too!
I think they would certainly be fun to watch ☺️
Another great video :)
At 2:45 there is a fish with a mostly yellow body that swims off screen to the left and then another comes from the left that has the same yellow fins but a less yellow body.
I keep a 2 inch mystery snail and 5 ghost shrimp in my 20 gallon tank with 5 guppies 3 platys and 2 mollies. I have never had cleaner water.
I love both but ı like snails a little more not because they keep the tank clean but they are just sooooo cute shrimps are cute too
there is no "versus" with these 2 wonderful creatures.
I love shrimp :) but I have no experience with mystery snails. I have thought about getting a couple but I fear the over taking of my tanks.
If you remove the egg clutch they lay above water you won't have much to worry about. :-)
what species of Shrimp is at 6:29 ?. Are they called Zebra- shrimp ?.
👍💓👍
Having them both is a good compromise. :-)
Usually that happens with soft water. Cuddle bone may help. Life With Pets also sells a calcium infused snail food too.
Et tu Jason? Then fall mystery snail! I think I will take a stab at raising shrimp thanks to your Ides of March video.
Happy Monday, great video again but what are the Jetson’s 🤔🤓
Sounds like you have some TV watching to do :-)
Thanks for that… I was wondering why my mystery snail eggs didn’t hatch!
What shrimp is that at 6:40 of the video?
What about shrimp and substrates? I have gravel and river rock and have heard that some river rocks have minerals that harm the shrimp. 😣
I haven't had that issue with neocaridina. Sand is the best choice for shrimp because their food won't sink into gravel if left uneaten.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics thank you!
Mystery snails are cleaning machines!
Hello, what substrate do you guys use? Specific brand etc? Im trying to find an inert aquasoil that doesnt need to be replaced. Is big so not fine sand or etc. not sharp and wont change any water parameters
We mostly just use whatever sand is available at petco or petsmart.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics in your thumbnail, the left side is of a snail on some aqua soil, which one did you use for that?
Can I put a 2 snail and 1 shrimp and a 10 gallon with some neon tetras I feel like this is over stocking but I would like to know
Sure
But who would win in a fight???
Hands down Joanna.
Oh you mean between shrimp and snails...?
Planaria? Haha
i had nothing but bad luck with ghost shrimp, they last about a week, and if I change the water. they will be dead the next day. checked water quality and it is fine. My mystery snails are doing great and laying eggs. I have Kuhli loaches and black skirt tetra, they are all doing fine
Ya, I’m my experience ghost shrimp don’t do that well in freshwater.
Do the ghost shrimp do well with mystery snails? Have the snails but thinking of getting couple shrimps
If the body falls out it's dead. If they aren't moving after about 5-7 days they might be dead?
Why did you use cocoa puffs for substrate?
That's actually Eco Complete :-)
@@PrimeTimeAquatics yes, I just thought I'd toss that out there for the heck of it 😁
What about for in a brackish tank with a figure 8 puffer? I know shrimp can, but what snails can do brackish?
The puffer will most likely eat any snails or shrimp you put in the tank. :-(
@@PrimeTimeAquatics my ghost shrimp have bread 2x in the same tank as my puffer got almost 10 and i started with 5
Shrimp totally remind me of the Jetsosns.
They are both awesome!
When you want to relax watch a pack of snails "race" across the glass. When you are bored and need some excitement check out a frenzy of shrimps. I call a tie. No winners or losers! Great topic!!
Now that is an interesting perspective. :-)
Yes! Both blue ribbons! 😃
Mrs Prime Time Aquatics And don’t forget the gold stars! Lol 😝
a side note for your side note.. the Jetsons and Simpsons have the same theme song..
Good Morning. I love be my Mystery Snails.
I did not do well with the shrimp. I only have 1 blue sapphire shrimp left. :(
I'm sorry - maybe they'll be worth a try again later.
Hi,
I have a 20G long shrimp tank, just shrimp, no fish. How many Mystery Snails can I add to it. I want them for their bioload, so my good bacteria does not crash. TY
If you get three or four they will most likely do the job and give you babies if you want them :-)
I'm going to order some blue shrimps should I keep them separate from my tetras??
Depends on the tetras, but that’s usually the safe route to go - keeping them separate.
Love them both
Can I have both in the same tank? Because I do but I think the shrimps are not breeding
Yep - we do it all the time!
Would Mystrey snails be ok in low Ph? Wouldn’t they suffer from shell erosion?
They would probably suffer from shell erosion over time.
I once got a mystery snail/Apple snail it was so cool looking and huge! The problem with it was it ate all of my plants!! It was so big I could see its mouth bite off pices of the plant, Choo it up the poo it out!! I will never get another snail like that again
