    Thanks for joining me on this adventure. It was a bit of a skunky one, fair warning haha... but it happens. I ventured into some river current and learned some lessons. Thankfully, all was well and I was safe. I didn't lose any gear or flip my kayak.
    God is good. Ya'll be blessed. Later!

      For sure! I was given a lot of tips so it probably would help somewhat on the water, but the Sportsman is pretty wide and not really made to carve through water as it is made to be super stable.

    When you enter the current, lean downstream. Current will pick up the upstream side and “peel” you into the current. If you do the opposite, you are fighting the current and can then pull water into your kayak or make you unstable. Advice coming from a whitewater kayaker. Water will always win….so don’t fight it, flow with it. Going upstream, you ferry across the current and paddle hard. Angle yourself upstream, don’t go head first. Keep your body slightly tipped downstream while ferrying at an angle. Never head on in the current. Also, muddy water on rivers, dark lures. Chatterbaits that are dark in color. That may help. You’re safe, and that is always a good day on the river no matter what you catch.

      Thanks for the advice and tips. River fishing and navigating a river is a different animal for sure. There’s definitely a learning curve. Whitewater rafting or kayaking would be insane. Water will always win - words of wisdom right there.

    Respect man. That current was absolutely ripping, there's no shame in that at all. The rivers can be really fun as long as you're careful and don't underestimate them.
    My sketchy moment was actually wading a river when I was inexperienced and didn't understand current. I found a shallow section that I thought I could cross. Current was ripping but it seemed manageable. I got about halfway when I realized the current was so strong that it was pushing me downstream across the rocks into a deep 10ft hole. I had a big backpack, a rod in each hand and can't swim very well. I didn't know what to do and actually yelled for help even though I knew no one was around. In the panic, I just picked my feet up, attempted to run across it and immediately ate shit. I was able to grab onto a couple of rocks that were above the water just before the hole and pull myself to shore. I questioned my life choices, laughed about it and went home. Stay safe out there!

      That’s absolutely wild. Being swept towards and into a 10ft hole is wild. I’m right there with you on not being a strong swimmer. Glad you made it alright. I’m guessing all the gear was gone? Was anything saved?

    As far as early morning routine I try and have everything ready the night before including everything in the truck. I normally just grab a quick bite at home or hit a gas station for breakfast if I’m hungry but I honestly rarely eat when I’m fishing.

    When I was cartopping my kayak I was driving down the road on a day the wind was brutal and all of a sudden I heard vibration and one of my J-Hooks I was using sheared both bolts. Luckily was almost home when it happened and never used them again

    I have my cheap Lifetime tamarack for river fishing. I can pick that up and carry it no problem and it just glides over inches of water. I usually like to prepare the night before, load up the kayak and most of the gear, get gas, etc. Went out today but it stormed last night, so had to do it all in the morning before I left. No fish but it was a good day of pedaling around in a larger lake, put on many miles. Love being on the kayak for almost 5 hours and not even a droplet of water in the hull.

    • @thatfishingnoob
      @thatfishingnoob  2 місяці тому +1

      Maybe I need to take the old Teton out to this river again to venture around more. Ahhh man, no fish… but glad it was still a good day pedaling around and covering water. Isn’t it mind boggling how much more water you can cover? I think I’m sold on Old Town for future kayaking needs. Thanks for stopping by, I appreciate you!

  • @IdahoOutdoorDad
    @IdahoOutdoorDad 2 місяці тому

    when you cross Eddie lines back into current you need to lean down river or away from current your entering, that's why you felt unstable and dipped left as the water in the eddie is going up river and your entering a downriver flow. The back half of kayak is being pushed up river while front half is pushed down river. So if you lean down river it will allow the stronger down river current to go under yak and not "grab" you. Also you need to paddle hard through the Eddie line.

    • @thatfishingnoob
      @thatfishingnoob  2 місяці тому +1

      That’s really helpful, thank you. Seems counterintuitive as well, but makes sense. My initial thoughts are that’s gonna make me flip, but you know better than I do. Reminds me of counter steering, pull left, go right. Thanks for stopping by and helping me out with the info!

    • @IdahoOutdoorDad
      @IdahoOutdoorDad 2 місяці тому

      @@thatfishingnoob yeah no problem man. It does feel weird at first. You do the opposite when entering an eddie. The basic rule is you want to lean down current of the current you are entering and always paddle hard all the way through it. A lot of people will paddle hard till their body passes forgetting they have 2-5 feet of boat still behind them and get tossed around. Also always hit an eddie line slightly angled upstream of the current you’re entering, you hit at 90 degree which is why you felt so ‘tippy’. Taking a whitewater kayaking class was the best thing I ever did when it comes to learning how to navigate a river in any kind of kayak/paddleboard. Highly recommend it!

    Looks fishy, enjoyed the dramatization, maybe they staying tight to structure? Morning routine on random fishing trips, it's an adventure, go to bed wake up and wing it aside from location that I want to fish.
    It seems like ideally, is recommend a crescent shoalie, for river systems. I did a lot of research and have watched a ton of videos about it. You made it!!! Great job. Heck of a workout though. Water can be very deceptive. Great day, it does happen.... Take care.

    • @thatfishingnoob
      @thatfishingnoob  2 місяці тому

      I tried fishing as close as I could to structure and banks that I’ve caught them on before. I think part of it was how stained that water was. I’ll snag them next time, maybe with some cut bait lol.
      Thanks for the kayak recommendation. If I end up fishing rivers more frequently I’ll definitely check it out. Rivers can be a whole different animal. Water is definitely deceptive haha. I’m glad the current wasn’t ripping more - a trip over those rocks would have been a bad time for me and my gear.

      @@thatfishingnoob i would try, personally, black and blue jig, maybe white swim jig, and or something with chartreuse I have had success with. Kayak into a river. So seeing the struggle you had was a real eye-opener. I'm glad nothing bad happened to you but at the same time it was a lot of information that I needed to see personally. Create video no negative comments is my intention. You're a great angler and I really enjoy your videos. Because you're such a realist.
