As a phone repair technician for 10+ years and recently a Range Rover owner, I LOVED this video. I would find little fixes like this all the time on my previous cars. Thank you for saving me the time to figure this out. And the cotter pin fit perfectly. You're an awesome technician/engineer!

This is a massively important video that saved me a lot of money that I was about to spend for a recovery vehicle and expensive fix. I followed you video exactly and now have a great fix. In fact this should not be regarded as a temporary fix but it is a stronger replacement for the weak original part. Well done and thank you

Literally the most life saving video I’ve ever watched on UA-cam!!! My husband and I just did this in repair in 15 minutes thanks to this video. We were able to use the little plaque scraper tool from a dental cleaning kit to pry up the initial piece (r/p/n), so that’s an additional tip. To remove the piece where you have to squeeze the pieces on each end, we used a hemostat. To replace the broken piece, we used a mini Bobby pin. Mind blown!!! Thank you again!!!

Absolute lifesaver!! This happened to me last night and I instantly started Googling and Youtubing fixes and found a forum post and your video.
I was able to pull the part out and jerry rig a screw driver in the back of the shifter to engage the button so I could leave the parking lot I got stranded in. Heading to get a cotter pin tonight on my way home from work. Awesome video!

I was stuck waiting for a tow truck for 3 hours since my truck didn't want to go into neutral. I called my mechanic, sent him the video, and he came and fixed it for about $30. THANK YOU SO MUCH for your video; it was a lifesaver.

I just want to say how amazing this video is. This happened to me this evening and after getting a ride to Home Depot to get a t8 screwdriver and the cotter pin it took me less than 15 mins to fix. I do recommend getting a thinner cotter pin however. I used a 1/16 “ x 1” long pin and it worked fine. You will definitely need a thinner pin for it to slide through. As I made the mistake of getting a 1/8 inch pin first and it didn’t fit because it was too big to fit through the hole. Also you may need a pair of pliers to squeeze the pin a little.
Also, don’t make the mistake that I did and leave your car on as it will trigger a gearbox fault. LOL lessons learned. Thank you so much. You saved me a $1000s and a two hour tow home

Can’t say enough to thank you for making this so easy. Everything worked out exactly as you described and everything went back together and I was in a place where both the dealership as well as any parts departments were either closed or did not have the button readily available. Thanks to this video, the car back on the road today! Thanks again

I just want to say a huge thank you for posting this video. You literally have saved me a bunch of money. I have a 2016 RRS. While i stopped to do parallel parking, the car would not go in reversed(I'm literally blocking the road;one way) I ended up pulling my emergency neutral and my friend and I ended up pushing it to the curb. The cheapest quote I got after making a couple of calls was for $2,000. That's to replace the gear shifter and labor. I went on UA-cam and thats how I ended up finding this channel, I followed your step and was able to get it fixed it. The only difference is that i ended up using a paper clip and crazy glue to replace the broken piece. I couldn't find the clip you used because of where i was at. ONE IMPORTANT thing to all those that might run into a similar situation, mak sure you turn the car off before reattaching the little module. I was reattached mine while the car was on and nothing happend, no lights were in the module, the car still wasn't shifting, then I realized I had to turn the car off before re- connecting the module. I've been using that paper clip for a week now 😂. I will be replacing it today, tho, with the replacement part i ordered on amazon.

We had the same thing happen while three hours from home on vacation. Went to hardware store purchased $15 in tools. Wife called dealer and suggested a shop to send it too, he estimated it would be $700 to $900 plus towing. Watched your video, solved the issue in 20 minutes ( had to cut the carter pin three times) and it was off and running! thank you so much for doing this video.

Life saver! Can't believe how badly made this part is. The whole car becomes instantly unusable because of a weak bit of plastic. I used super glue and a couple of chopped off and glued small cable ties to the sides to add extra strength to the snapped off plastic. Thanks so much for posting this video. Fyi The official replacement part is $170 in Australia.

I can’t find enough words to express my gratitude. I was stuck in the middle of the road tonight. Your video was a tremendous savior. I followed it to the T, including the metal clip part! I fixed the issue completely in 2 hours, mostly looking for a T8 screwdriver among neighbors.
I was never handy with cars or anything else. But I hated to have to tow the car to the dealer after the warranty lapsed 2 months ago. Your fix cost me $0.00!!!
The metal clip thing feels sturdier than the stupid piece of plastic. Do you recommend that o buy a new part or stick with what I now have?

    • @jasonelder324
      @jasonelder324  4 роки тому +1

Glad I was able to help. I still have the cotter pin in mine too. I agree that it does feel much stronger that it used to with the plastic tip. I don't know how long this will hold up. I am a little concerned that the cotter pin may start to spread over time. But for now it is holding. You can find a replacement button on eBay and amazon if you want to. I have also kicked around the idea of pulling it back a part and epoxying around the cotter pint so that it will be bonded to the plastic button and will not be able to get loose.

TIP: 3/32 x 1" cotter pin works perfectly and not too thick. FIRST slip it over a basic butter knife, sliding it up to a thicker area of the knife to widen the gap while bending the cotter from a shallow-V back to parallel, snug over the broken plastic section. No glue needed, it can't slide out. EXCELLENT video. MUCH appreciated.

Many many many thanks for sharing this vid. My wife called me and said she could not put the RR in any gear and the dash was telling her to press the trigger. The good thing was that she was at the community mailbox just down from the house and I was on my way home. Jason you were spot on with how to hack it and fix the problem. Being a car buff myself, I had cotter pins at home. I used your vid to pull it apart and a screw driver to engage the trigger then drove it home and finish the rest. I think this fix will outlast the truck - IMO. Kudos and thanks again.

Thank you so much Jason you help people across borders, i'm very gratefull to you. I will describe my issue in french because i hope that my comment will help french speakers like me to find this relevant video.

Cotter pins cost me 95 penny from tool station. I am so greatful Jason I really am. Land rover gave me an estimate of 1000 which includes their labour so told them to basically Go to hell Land Rover are so stupid for creating a design like this. Ofcourse its the dirtiest tactic to make more money. JASON MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY.

Just did a field repair using this method. Saved a costly tow! I first tried to super glue the plastic piece on just to get it home, but no way is that going to work with the large amount of effort required to push down that button. I am sure JB Weld would have worked. But fortunately, I had a perfectly size cotter pin in my parts collection. I just had to trim it a little to make it overall shorter, squeeze the tip more narrow to fit the channel, and I had to put a big upward bend at the tip so it wasn't pushing the button down all the time. The cotter pin doesn't need any glue to stay in place because it's captive in the plastic channel and by its length. I ordered a replacement part on Amazon for $20, but I am not sure a plastic replacement is going to be better than this cotter pin that is metal. So I might just keep the new button in the glove box. FYI, in pinch you can just remove the part with a T8 or probably press a small flat head screwdriver into the T8 head to get off the screw, and then manually press down the button to change gears. In other words, even if you are very low on tools and supplies, you shouldn't need a tow for this situation.

Repaired our 2016 Range Rover Sport shifter button by following the simple steps in this video. Only difference is that I used 2 bobby pins (one cut just flush and the other sticking out just right). I used the 2 bobby pins as they were just the right height to fit snuggly in the plastic channel piece.
I wonder if the repair with metal pins is better than replacing this with the part I have on order from Land Rover. The part from Land Rover is only $70, but I worry that it will just end up breaking in again in another 4 or 5 years.

Great video! My girlfriend found this video and we were able to use it to fix the shifter until Land Rover replaced it! We got the pin from a hardware store!

Thanks! Used 3/32 cotter 1 1/4 trimmed to fit length. Had to bend it up a bit to model the original flimsy piece. Depress the switch while reinstalling the trigger button.
