My last audition was actually way back in December, and we just barely finished the show so clearly it went well enough for me to get in, but MAN has it been a crazy process. So back in December, I auditioned for my Highschool Musical "Beauty and the Beast", and I honestly wanted the role of Belle, but during auditions I kinda knew I wasn't going to get the role. I then made callbacks, and this is when I started to feel more like I was actually going to get the role because they literally used me for every female role and every Belle dialogue scene they did. So, I was feeling quite confident for when the cast list came out, because i knew that if I didn't get Belle I would probably have a pretty good chance at getting one of the other roles, right? Well, the day the cast list was supposed to come out, our director decided to wait till midnight to post it, so I didn't see it till 5:00 in the morning the next day. So, I'm sitting there bright and early in the morning, scrolling through the cast list. I go to Belle, didn't get it. Mrs. Potts? Nope. Wardrobe? Nope. Babette? Nope. I didnt even get a silly girl or the enchantress. So then I scroll down to the ensemble, and my name is nowhere to be seen. So by this point I'm just kind of sitting there confused, but somehow I didnt start crying. Instead, I just decided it'd be best to email my director and ask him how I can improve for next years musical. ...and then I started to cry a bit. But, I had this Caroling gig that day that I had about an hour to get ready for so I go start doing that to the best of my ability. Eventually my director emails me back, and his response was "Desiree, from the bottom of our hearts we apologize deeply, but you are MOST DEFINITELY on the cast list. It was an error on my part that I missed your name when I typed it up into Word. I take all the blame for it, but you need to know you were at the top of our list for many roles and we wanted you in the cast from the beginning, you will add alot to the show. Again, I am sorry for missing your name on the list. I have updated the list on the site so you are there now." So by now I am absolutely balling and there was no way I'd be getting any makeup on my face at that point so I just plopped on some lashes and curled my hair, then arrived at the caroling gig in tears. (Thankfully we had enough time for me to calm down before performing) So, I was in ensemble. But then, about a week after the cast list was posted, our female swing dropped out, so i got bumped up to that role, and i was told to learn everything but mainly focus on Mrs. Potts while still also being part of ensemble. So, a month and a half past of me being swing, when suddenly our Babette started not showing up to rehearsals. So, long story short, she got cut from the show two weeks before we opened and I was bumped up to Babette (I actually learned all of this and stress-learned all my lines on the ride home from a Disneyland trip, so that was great.) Somehow i managed to pull through and the show was amazing and I am really really missing it now lol. Sorry for the long comment, I just wanted to share the whole story.

I had an audition for Sebastian in the little mermaid in January! Today we found out who got who and I got Sebastian!!!!!! This is my first lead role and I'm so excited I could cry!!!!
My 8 year old just auditioned for Matilda. It has been almost 2 weeks so we are assuming she isnt getting a callback. However, for her second audition ever and this being her dream role she did fantastic and that is all we can hope for. She is proud of what she did in there and that is all that matters.

And right after our last show ended it was announced that we'd be doing Phantom. And I immediately began prepping. I watched various versions of the musical and got into a lot of the characters searching for what I could get. I prepped for 3 months and auditioned for Meg Giry. I got the role! And we have 4 months until we perform. I can't wait!!

Last show I auditioned for was Jesus Christ Superstar my senior year of college because I wanted to see if at some point they’d let a non-performing arts major into the show. Didn’t even get a callback, but had a blast watching it and being reminded of when I was in it in high school.

The last show I auditioned for was Once on This Island (which I'm in right now! Opening night is March 29!) so LISTEN UP I'N GONNA TELL YOU A STORY Since it's middle school, our only audition song option was One Small Girl and you could either sing the beginning or the "eucalyptus" verse. I decided to sing the beginning, so I listened to the revival, original, and junior version on repeat for weeks until the audition. I sang it literally all the time, which my friends are used to since I'm always singing. The day of the auditioned, we all had to sing in front of the cast-to-be. I sang, and people seemed to be impressed, which made me so relieved! The director told me that my voice has improved in the past 3 years. I ended up getting a callback for Asaka, which is my favorite role! I listened to Alex Newell on repeat and practiced it over and over again but made sure I gave it my own flare. I performed at the callback and I HIT THAT HIGH NOTE AND MADE IT MY BITCH Once I sat down a girl said to me "omg Summer you just snatched alex newell's fruit hat" lol A few weeks later, the cast list came (out on my birthday!!!) I kept on refreshing the website page, but the list came out an hour late. I was about to open the link and my heart was beating SO HECKING HARD. I clicked on it, and.................................................. I GOT ASAKA! THE END

In case if anyone was wondering, I didn't make it in. But I'm an underclassman and out of five or fewer underclassmen who made it in, only one of them is a girl! I'll have plenty more chances in the next couple of years, and even later this year! I think the director just wanted to promote to the male population at our school to consider joining the drama club and auditioning for shows. The ratio of guys to girls in this show is more equal than in any other show. For now, I'm going to join a tech crew (the sound/audio part if you were wondering) and work hard there. holy moly, I found my comment from two years ago, so here's an update for whatever reason: I'm a senior now, about to audition for what will likely be my very last musical, Matilda. I'm going for Matilda, but I would love to be Lavender. (I guess I still stand strong with that "if you shoot for the moon and miss" thing, huh?) But back then, I did what I said I would do in that earlier comment, and I worked really hard in "Chicago". A few months later, I was finally cast in "9 to 5", but it was canceled by COVID one week before opening, which broke my 10th-grade heart. A whole year later, during COVID, we did "Urinetown" safely outside of our theater. I was Officer Barrel (big promotion from ensemble!) and I managed to help sound crew some more! More recently this school year, I was Finch in "Puffs the Play" and then continued my work in sound/audio crew some more in "Elf the Musical", which were my favorite shows I've ever done. My advice to anyone who faces rejection in doing theatre: please don't be too discouraged. There will always be more chances, and there are opportunities for you to contribute to this beautiful process in other ways (like doing crew!). My experiences onstage and offstage have helped me grow so much. Being the bridge between is an amazing experience, and I've loved every step of the way. These videos helped me so much over the years -- I've come back to them for almost every audition, and this is probably the last one. To new theatre kids out there: *enjoy the process.* Trust it, too. You'll do well, just wait.
I am auditioning for Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat next month, and this is the 4th musical I'm auditioning for. I started auditioning for musicals in high school, and I auditioned for a play my senior year, Our Town, and I got cast as the lady in the box. I didn't audition anymore after that, until 4 months ago, when I auditioned for Amelie, the musical. I took Katherine's advice, and dressed up like how Amelie would dreas if she was alive, today. And I didn't get the part. Now, I'm an extrovert, so, I like people who like musicals. When I got up onstage, when my audition song started, I sang some of it, but forgot what the lyrics were in the middle, and the casting director, thankfully, helped me out. And I didn't get it. Now, I'm auditioning for the ensemble in Joseph, and I'll be singing Spread a little sunshine from Pippin.

So I live in the Midwest and we have been dealing with some pretty crazy weather lately. Since casting my school show a month ago, we have had 13 snow days. We open in 4 weeks and I’m really worried that we aren’t ready because of all of the missed rehearsals, and the directors can’t change the show dates. Any advice?

Hey! I know I'm not Katherine but just in case she doesn't respond in time for you. Depending on the role you are auditioning for you want a song that makes sense for the character. If you're auditioning for Dorothy choose a song similar to the gentleness of "Over the Rainbow" ( I can't think of any examples right now Sorry! )
I usually take a lot of notes to help me prepare. Like pro/con lists for my song, dance, script, etc. If I am going for a specific character I take detailed notes on that character so I go in there understanding who that character is.

The show is in three weeks and we have our first dress rehearsal tomorrow. Do you have any ideas for what I should do in rehearsal? I can’t sing high at all right now and I have some really high notes that I need to belt.
Yeah, I’d recommend talking to your director & marking/taking it easy in rehearsal to let your voice heal. Avoid talking, whispering, screaming, etc. as well 😊

-i’ve lost 15 pounds and 6 inches (for amping up my gym workouts)
-i’ve taken lots of tips and tricks for theater and vocal

Oliver was my last audition didn't get the part but it was way out of my dancing ability but I stayed until the end of the audition and I am very proud of myself for trying. I am auditioning for play with the same company.

Last show I auditioned for was Jesus Christ Superstar my senior year of college because I wanted to see if at some point they’d let a non-performing arts major into the show. Didn’t even get a callback, but had a blast watching it and being reminded of when I was in it in high school.

The last show I auditioned for was Once on This Island (which I'm in right now! Opening night is March 29!) so LISTEN UP I'N GONNA TELL YOU A STORY
Since it's middle school, our only audition song option was One Small Girl and you could either sing the beginning or the "eucalyptus" verse. I decided to sing the beginning, so I listened to the revival, original, and junior version on repeat for weeks until the audition. I sang it literally all the time, which my friends are used to since I'm always singing.
The day of the auditioned, we all had to sing in front of the cast-to-be. I sang, and people seemed to be impressed, which made me so relieved! The director told me that my voice has improved in the past 3 years.
I ended up getting a callback for Asaka, which is my favorite role! I listened to Alex Newell on repeat and practiced it over and over again but made sure I gave it my own flare. I performed at the callback and I HIT THAT HIGH NOTE AND MADE IT MY BITCH
Once I sat down a girl said to me "omg Summer you just snatched alex newell's fruit hat" lol
A few weeks later, the cast list came (out on my birthday!!!) I kept on refreshing the website page, but the list came out an hour late. I was about to open the link and my heart was beating SO HECKING HARD. I clicked on it, and.................................................. I GOT ASAKA!

In case if anyone was wondering, I didn't make it in. But I'm an underclassman and out of five or fewer underclassmen who made it in, only one of them is a girl! I'll have plenty more chances in the next couple of years, and even later this year! I think the director just wanted to promote to the male population at our school to consider joining the drama club and auditioning for shows. The ratio of guys to girls in this show is more equal than in any other show.
For now, I'm going to join a tech crew (the sound/audio part if you were wondering) and work hard there.

holy moly, I found my comment from two years ago, so here's an update for whatever reason:
I'm a senior now, about to audition for what will likely be my very last musical, Matilda. I'm going for Matilda, but I would love to be Lavender. (I guess I still stand strong with that "if you shoot for the moon and miss" thing, huh?)
But back then, I did what I said I would do in that earlier comment, and I worked really hard in "Chicago". A few months later, I was finally cast in "9 to 5", but it was canceled by COVID one week before opening, which broke my 10th-grade heart.
A whole year later, during COVID, we did "Urinetown" safely outside of our theater. I was Officer Barrel (big promotion from ensemble!) and I managed to help sound crew some more!
More recently this school year, I was Finch in "Puffs the Play" and then continued my work in sound/audio crew some more in "Elf the Musical", which were my favorite shows I've ever done.
My advice to anyone who faces rejection in doing theatre: please don't be too discouraged. There will always be more chances, and there are opportunities for you to contribute to this beautiful process in other ways (like doing crew!). My experiences onstage and offstage have helped me grow so much. Being the bridge between is an amazing experience, and I've loved every step of the way.
These videos helped me so much over the years -- I've come back to them for almost every audition, and this is probably the last one.
To new theatre kids out there: *enjoy the process.* Trust it, too. You'll do well, just wait.

I am auditioning for Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat next month, and this is the 4th musical I'm auditioning for. I started auditioning for musicals in high school, and I auditioned for a play my senior year, Our Town, and I got cast as the lady in the box. I didn't audition anymore after that, until 4 months ago, when I auditioned for Amelie, the musical. I took Katherine's advice, and dressed up like how Amelie would dreas if she was alive, today. And I didn't get the part. Now, I'm an extrovert, so, I like people who like musicals. When I got up onstage, when my audition song started, I sang some of it, but forgot what the lyrics were in the middle, and the casting director, thankfully, helped me out. And I didn't get it. Now, I'm auditioning for the ensemble in Joseph, and I'll be singing Spread a little sunshine from Pippin.

So I live in the Midwest and we have been dealing with some pretty crazy weather lately. Since casting my school show a month ago, we have had 13 snow days. We open in 4 weeks and I’m really worried that we aren’t ready because of all of the missed rehearsals, and the directors can’t change the show dates. Any advice?
Davie-The- Potterhead The same exact thing happened to me! Just make sure that you are there for every rehearsal you possibly can be, and definitely practice your music and choreography at home

Hey! I know I'm not Katherine but just in case she doesn't respond in time for you. Depending on the role you are auditioning for you want a song that makes sense for the character. If you're auditioning for Dorothy choose a song similar to the gentleness of "Over the Rainbow" ( I can't think of any examples right now Sorry! )
A dream is a wish your heart makes would be a good Disney audition song for Dorothy.
I usually take a lot of notes to help me prepare. Like pro/con lists for my song, dance, script, etc.
If I am going for a specific character I take detailed notes on that character so I go in there understanding who that character is.

Hi, I wanted to get your opinion on something. I’m in The Sound of Music right now and I’m one of the nuns/sisters, but I’m losing my voice. The show is in three weeks and we have our first dress rehearsal tomorrow. Do you have any ideas for what I should do in rehearsal? I can’t sing high at all right now and I have some really high notes that I need to belt.

Yeah, I’d recommend talking to your director & marking/taking it easy in rehearsal to let your voice heal. Avoid talking, whispering, screaming, etc. as well 😊
