One of my favourite musicals is Matilda (it was my first main role+i performed it on my birthday) and last year i got an opportunity to audition for a production of it. I auditioned for Matilda (my favourite character) but only got ensemble. This made me sad. However, recently my school started to do school shows and we are doing Matilda! I auditioned for Matilda again and somehow I got it! This is your reminder to never give up on your dreams ❤
I'm never on the stage but I do the pit orchestra for my high school musicals and boy is there often drama with kids not getting the role they wanted. this past year, the senior that was 'the theatre kid' that was an amazing singer who everyone thought would get the lead didn't even get a singing part. she quit the show. these are the moments when I'm glad to just sit in the pit orchestra and play my little violin parts
@@cayleejowould this person be considered a bad person to cast had they been maybe a junior or sophomore and had done this? I’ve seen a lot of people act like that 😂
@@cayleejoyes, sorry this has nothing to do with the comment but I just wanted your opinion. I’m in a production of Into The Woods Jr at a local theatre. It's for 2nd through 5th graders, with me, being the oldest there. The company makes money from actors paying money to be in the musical. So the more you come, the better roles you get. My friend who has a lovely singing voice, has been in shows there many times, and has now for this show brought 4 friends (including me) is obviously going to get the part she wants. While me, someone who also has a fantastic voice, will get bad roles because it's my first time there. This is kind of how there works. I auditioned (they had us sing Happy Birthday because there is 2nd graders) and did it perfectly, showcasing my range that is up to C6. My friend also did it great, we both showed our strengths, hers having lots of depth in her voice, mine being very high, great vibrato, and belting it out. Anyways, 7 days later, get our roles back. And on the cast list, my friend gets Cinderella (what we both auditioned for), and I get Rapunzels Prince. This is extremely surprising to me, because Rapunzels Prince is meant for a boy tenor. While me, a girly girl whose a Soprano. (showcased in my audition) The person who casted us, the director, had her mom record our auditions and her look at them later. This just goes to show that the director didn't even have to look at all of them to cast, she could've just casted based on what she saw from other shows people were in, then looked and cast the leftover roles after. My mother texted the director, confused as to why a soprano girl was casted as a tenor man. She texted a video of me singing the lowest I can go, the video being not as low as the prince does. She texts that it could be an octave higher or so. I was very upset and embarrassed, my friend thought I would get Cinderella or Baker’s Wife and that she would get Little Red or Jack. I’m really disappointed and not happy that I will have to play a boy. My favorite color is literally pink and I am not comfortable having to be the opposite gender, fantasizing about marrying a girl. My singing teacher says that this is weird because they usually ask you if you are comfortable playing the opposite gender and that she will work in Agony with me. What should I do? Because this is not looking good for me. I already practiced Cinderellas song for weeks incase I got it because me being the oldest I thought that was a possibility, but realizing how this company works. It no longer is. The director even said in her text “Hello, sorry, me and Agatha were cleaning up after rehearsal and realized you were not there. We could definitely switch you to a different cast but the role would not be as big as Rapunzels Prince. We could still put the ocative higher if the ocative is uoud main concern. Super upset, I chose to keep the role of Rapunzels Prince to not risk being Milky White, stepsisters or ensemble.
@@katiecroal2528 thank you for reaching out! Those "Pay to Play" theatres can be really difficult to work with if you feel that casting is largely based on $$ rather than skill. I always hope that it's a situation where everyone pays the same amount to be involved and therefore has an equal shot during auditions, but I know this just depends on who is in charge. My primary concern here is that you were cast as the opposite gender without being asked first. I have done a lot of gender-swapped casting but I always ask actors beforehand to make sure they're comfortable with it. If you choose to keep the role, although I would understand if you chose not to, here would be my advice: -The prince is a goofy ridiculous role. He isn't in love with Rapunzel, he's in love with himself. The interactions between him and Rapunzel are purely about him looking "princely", so I would not feel as if you have to lean into the idea that he wants to marry Rapunzel/is in love with her. His primary love story is with himself! You have an opportunity to really steal some scenes with this character, especially with "Agony" whic his almost always everyone's favorite song from the show because it is hilarious. Commit to being the biggest most obscene character for this role and it will be impossible not to have fun with it. This is also an opportunity to show that you're an actress with range, which may bode well for future auditions. In the future, if you choose to work with this company again, I would make it clear what you're comfortable accepting/not accepting, although, again, they should have consulted you ahead of time. Break a leg
I just got rejected for Ophelia on hamlet and I ended up getting Rosencranz and I was crying the whole night because I had just gotten theead role for the last play but I realized that I’m still part of this production and I’m going to do my best effort. Thank you for this video!
Theater is my dream. Its what I want to do with my life, my best friend has other plans. In out school play, I had my heart set on being this one character, and in the end, my name was 3rd to last on the cast list whils my best friend got a very big part. I was so jealous and I cried secretly at home for months. I showed up to every rehearsals and filled in for so many parts while the actors/actresses were absent, and I think my director is noticing how much better I am than she thought, so fingers crossed from the musical, and wish me luck for no more tears
I’m so proud of you ♥️. Seriously, anybody who can turn such a difficult situation into an opportunity to shine AND help others/support your cast mates is a top notch performer and I’m certain your director will notice that. Chin up, you’re doing great things!
That first story was so real man i fell in love with a part and i did pretty well in my audition i think then two weeks later the cast list went up and the part i wanted was given to my brother
I’m sorry for you not getting the role you really wanted. I wanted to be the tin man last year for my junior year (as a girl) because we didn’t have many guys and I was a good tap dancer. Ironically, I got Glinda and like you cried the entire way home upset that I hadn’t gotten what I wanted. I even asked the director what went wrong at my audition. Then I realized that my part was better for me and there was no way I could have played the tin man better than the person they picked. I’m hoping for a good role this year, we’re doing Cinderella, but I’m not sure if I’ll get a good part. I’m just praying last year’s experience will help me better except and understand my role or lack there of. Great video!!
this was really helpful, thank you! Anya in Anastasia is my dream role. I auditioned for it last month, and got a callback, but then was cut from the show entirely. i was (and still am) absolutely devastated. i had told all my family and friends about the audition since i felt i had a good chance of landing the role since i'm blonde, on the shorter side, sassy and classy, fitting the character description to a T, and could hardly talk to anyone after i got the disappointing email since it was pretty embarrassing. But seriously, thank you so much for this video. it was truly helpful!
Sending you all the internet hugs! Also, it's worth noting that sometimes an opportunity passes us by because there is something BIGGER on the horizon ;)
I'm glad i saw this video. Me and my theater friends have been sulking since last month the cast list for our school's production of Legally Blonde came out and nobody got a role (one person got chorus but that's it). Some older people in our class are considering quitting since they haven't gotten casted in 3+ years. I'm trying to be happy about possibly doing set and costume design since it's something I find interesting
The way “theatre friends” corrected to “feet are friends” 😭 And also costume and set design can still be very fun, even if it’s not what you were picturing! I hope you make the most of it!
My school did a production of the wizard of oz. When they announced that I put my first choice as glinda and my second as dorothy. The day after I put that down my choice changed from glinda to dorothy but I couldn’t change it in the sheet. First auditions were held for glinda and I did really bad.my voice for her was all over the place and my singing in her voice wasn’t the best out of Al the other 12 girls there. Then I auditioned for Dorothy and I sung beautifully. I really really do believe I sung the best at that audition and I really do think I was a great fit for her. After I auditioned my other teacher (who didn’t have a final say in the casting but still helped my music teacher decide) pulled me out of class to say that I had the best voice in my (small) school and that I should change my mind about being glinda. I said I wanted to be Dorothy and he said ok.the day after I saw the casting and I was glinda. I understand why my teacher would put me as her, seeing as I put that as my first choice on paper but I still cried so much.
Ok heres my story. im doing mean girls jr at my school (yes im old enoight to be on yt im 13) so anyway ive been in this show twice already. the first time i did it a was sonja, and then the next i was gretchen. i was very confident i would get a good role, and so was all my friends. so anyway, i walked into the auditon and sang very well. i asked for regina or gretchen. i was upset at first when i wasn't a callback for gretchen, which i wanted, but was happy when i got a karen call back. i did great at callbacks and i was sure id get a good part. im fit for karen, im medium height, blonde, and can easily act dumb. so we get the cast list and i dont see my name until the very bottom- next to mathletes moderatpr. i dont want to be greedy or anything because im happy, i get lines,, its just i thought id do better. the worst part though, was that our cady, gretchen, and karen are all in sixth grade. Im just upset because i went from ensmble to lead and flying back down to ensmble.can you give some advice please?
Sorry I know this is late but the biggest thing that helped me was thinking about things in the sense of not who is best, but whos character fits the vision, like a puzzle! Never take things like that as your skills, many takes on characters exist and who knows what they were looking for! I bet you are still a great actor/singer, and this isn't about you, this is about how the directors see the show coming together, this isn't ranking who is the best actors, it's about what they want, so just do your best and be honest! I hope the production is going well and sorry this is so late lol
Do you have any tips for dealing with disappointment and jealousy DURING the production? Too often I have found myself resenting the person that got the part, failing to enjoy the part I did get, and spending every rehearsal jealously going over what I would do different and gleefully enjoying it when that person made a mistake. It makes me a very poor co-star and a bitter person. What can I do? It's a little easier when I realise the person who got the part is actually better, but what if you remain convinced that you would have been the better option?
This is so sweet, thank you. Today, my cast list came out; my two best friends got cast as the leads while I just barely got on the list. I started a group chat with the two of them and they immediately excluded me. Last year I got my first lead and they didn’t even get in the show, so it’s just confusing
Congrats on being cast! That does sound like a confusing situation with your friends, and I'm sorry that they don't seem to be supportive. I hope that your rehearsal process is a positive one and you break a leg for your show!
We needed this video at my school 😭 today was the first rehearsal and HALF THE CAST dropped out! The only people left are (most of) the leads and a couple ensemble members who have never been in a musical before… we are cooked lol
I’ve been doing theatre since kindergarten and did my first ever show in 5th grade. I’ve done so many musicals and plays before and often get featured ensemble. I’ve learned to see the bright side of it and I usually do end up getting the understudy for a lead which is great cause I at least have a chance to maybe have to play the part lol. But this year I’m now a freshman and highschool and we are doing beauty and the beast, since I almost never get bigger parts I usually just go straight to the bottom of the list and look up. But this time I didn’t see my name of the bottom and got so scared that I just got in the general chorus but then I looked more just in case and saw that I actually got cogsworth! Last year, people always told me that it is impossible to get a big role when your a freshman so I shouldn’t get my hopes up. But I seem to be reversed cause this is the first time I got a role with more than like 30 lines without being an understudy. I’m so glad I got cogsworth too because he is my dream role in the musical besides belle but the girl who got belle definitely fits her perfectly and I would’ve been mad if she didn’t get belle lol so I’m very happy and definitely excited to start rehearsals!
COGSWORTH IS MY FAVEEEEEEEE & LUMIERE.. SO LUCKY!!! we're doing matilda jr and im DYING for mr wormwood or trunchbull but i gotta lock in & realize the chances are slim
I remember I auditioned for a regional production of matilda I made to three rounds and was cut. But then another play came up, and I got the part , I did like four plays at that theater, making some of my best friends, and then another theater did matilda. I tried out and got a part, not what I wanted ( but I was able to make some of the costumes). I was just happy to do matilda , I know not everyone will benefit how I did, but yeah, that's my story
What a huge accomplishment to have made it so far into the casting of that regional production - that's awesome! And how serendipitous that you ended up doing Matilda after all, even if it was in a different theatre. It sounds like you've had a lot of great experiences :) I hope they keep happening for you!
I auditioned for Miss Honey from Matilda and I definitely didn’t get the role because the two other girls in callbacks were amazing and way better then me and definitely got my hopes down since it was my first audition but there is a always next time:)
So the cast list for mean girls (my favorite musical!!!!) just came out and I’m really disappointed. I auditioned for Karen, and I’m perfect for the part. I look like her, I sound like her, and I can sing her songs really good. But the cast list just came out and I find my name next to…..Kevin g. I know I should be grateful for the part, I was excited to sing this year. Last year I was ensemble, so I couldn’t show off my singing, and I was excited this year because if I got the part I would be able to you know, have fun singing. Also Kevin g is a really embarrassing part I have no idea why the teacher casted me as him I cannot rap for my life I’m just sad because I probably will never be in this musical and it was my dream to be Karen or Gretchen.
I’m going to throw this out here…. The role of Kevin G requires more enthusiasm than either Karen or Gretchen! It may not be as “glamorous” of a part but I bet your director feels you can pull off this role that requires a TON of characterization and energy! If you pull this off you are REALLY showing them how versatile you are. This is also a super funny role and you can easily steal every scene you’re in. You are completely justified in being bummed, but you have an opportunity to really make an impact with this role. Break a leg!
@@cayleejo Tysm! I wrote this in the heat of the moment a few hours after cast list was released. I think I just needed somewhere to vent and blow off some steam 😅. It’s been about a week and I’m super excited to play the part!!!!!
I've done theater all four years of highschool and we've always done senior priority casting. The cast list just came out for my senior musical which I was really hopeful for (my director literally told me she was excited about my audition and I have reason to be confident) and the cast list is almost entirely underclassmen, every senior that auditioned except two either weren't cast or put in ensemble and the two that were cast were cast in roles they specifically stated on their audition sign up that they wouldn't play because it's out of their range and the guy that was cast as our male lead laughed at someone in her face during auditions and made her cry. I know I'll get over it eventually but this is actually kind of devastating to me. I really don't do anything outside of theater so I don't know how to cope with this
I had almost the EXACT same experience when she started talking about The Wizard of Oz! I was in year 9 at the time. I had been onstage for one musical 5 years prior to this musical, and with every other musical I had been in stage crew. This one was going to be like my "debut role", and everyone was telling me I would definitley get Dorothy! So I had extremely high hopes, but I was competing for the role against a really talented girl in the year below. The audition was brilliant, I got a callback, kinda screwed it up a bit, but still, people were telling me I would get Dorothy. The cast list finally came out, and the other girl got the part. I was Tree 3. I was so upset at first, but it was actually such an incredible experience, and the other girl played Dorothy better than I ever could. I am currently hoping our school's next musical will be Beauty and the Beast, and seeing as it will be my final musical, and my dream role of all time is Belle, I'm really hoping that this dream can come true!
This past year, I auditioned for Beauty & The Beast for my local community theater. I wasn't going for Belle or anything, but I auditioned for a silly girl/ ensemble. There were about 100 people who auditioned and I was one of the 50 that got in. I was VERY excited to be a part of the show, being in the youth ensemble. I then find out that I'm the oldest in the youth ensemble, which is fine, but it was a little irritating to deal with the little kids. Then I find out that I'm only in two songs; Belle and Be Our Guest. I was so upset, that I cried and cried for two hours straight to my Dad, venting about how furious and disappointed I was, especially with the fact that just a few months earlier, I had got Gretchen in the community theater's production of Mean Girls; Highschool Edition. Y'know what I did though? I powered through and didn't complain. I helped out as much as possible with the kids, making sure they had all of the dances and entrances down. The show went very well. I relate to your experience (with the disappointment that you faced during The Wizard of Oz) and I'm glad that even before seeing this video, I was able to keep a positive mindset. I will try to keep all of your helpful tricks and tips from this video and many others in my mind for all of the future shows that I do. Thank you very much for your kind insight!
I really really reaaaalllly wanted to get miss honey in my schools fall musicals and I just found out I got ensemble… I had my heart set on it. I have no clue what what I did wrong
I needed this. I recently auditioned for Lion King Jr., and I was hoping for Nala, since theatre is my life and I’d never gotten a leading role before. The list came out today and I got Sarabi, which isn’t a bad role at all, but I couldn’t help but be disappointed since I’d was sure I’d get it.
I completely understand being disappointed, BUT if you were cast as Sarabi that likely means you were the second choice for Nala, which is incredible! That means that you're getting soooo close to that lead role! Maybe the next one is meant to be yours
You are so relatable When you told the wizard of oz story, it was just like me. I just finished having the leading role of dory in finding Nemo jr and felt confident for my next audition into the woods jr But I end up getting a step sister and I audition for 5 other leads
THANK YOU! I auditioned for my first musical today, and I thought I did very well. I cannot get ensemble, or I cannot do the play due to time constraints, but I hope this helps me if I don’t make it in. If you were wondering, I auditioned for Killer Queen in “We Will Rock You” the musical.
I'm doing my first production this year (legally blonde!!!!!!) and auditioned for Margot. I, unfortunately, didn't get Margot and ended up being in the Delta nu ensemble. At first, I was obviously disappointed that I didn't get who I auditioned for but I am now so proud of myself for getting the leading ensemble with heaps of stage time in my first-ever production.
I’m gonna audition for Matilda soon. I’m dreading reading the cast list. Matilda has been my dream role since age 9. I look like her, I can do accents if desired, and I know the whole show from top to bottom, but I know that ultimately, it’s not up to me.
Good luck, and remember, it's fine if you don't get Matilda. You must always try your best on the part you get (whatever that may be) as if you don't, the show will never be as good as it should have been. I really hope you get Matilda.
im just reading these comments and you're the sweetest! i love your channel and all your replies seem to be making everyone feel better :] I'll put down my own experience since everyone seems to be doing so! a couple of months ago i auditioned for my school's production of newsies and hoped to get katherine, however, i got called back for medda and jack! isn't that crazy? i did my part for both roles and didn't get any of them, but instead a named newsie. i was pretty bummed for a week (give or take) but then i got really into my role and loved being a newsie boy SOO much. the role gave me so much freedom and honestly newsies is just a really great show to be in regardless of the role you get. i got to fool around with my best friends who also got newsies and make up our own character relationships. it was the funnest rehearsal process I've had in a while! newsies will always hold a cherished place in my heart
i also auditioned for the wizard of oz last year, originally i didn’t go in looking for a big part. but once i got into the final callbacks with the glindas, dorothy’s and wicked witches, i had my heart set on glinda. i thought i’d done so good, but once the cast lost was out, i was a tot. i was disappointed in myself, but it ended up being a fun experience. :)
It's my final show with the group I'm in and we are putting on SpongeBob, my dream role has been SpongeBob for years and my best friend got cast as SpongeBob. My other best friend got cast as Sandy, and I got Plankton. I have no right to dislike my role but I really love the role of SpongeBob, it means to much to me. I have a story behind it and everything. I was distraught. I almost declined my role but realized that the director favorites my friends and because my first year with her I was a pain I suffered the consequences. I'm still totally bummed though! :(
Thank you so much. My musical society doesn’t do auditions. The cast off experience with you in past workshops. We’re doing greese and I’m extremely worried I won’t get a good part (I’m hoping for Patty) but I watched this just in case. Thank you
My story: a cast list came out about 3 hours ago. I was set on getting flounder in “The Little Mermaid J.R.” (I’m old enough) but I got called back for flounder/sebastion so I was very happy. Then when the cast list came out I got Adella/cook/court princess. I literally was so angry and I don’t know how to get over it. Thanks for helping.
I’m doing high school musical, and tried out for sharpay. And my friend tried out for a cheerleader and ended up getting sharpay. But that’s just for call backs so let’s see if I can change the directors mind
Trying to get into my first regional production and oof, the process doesn’t get any easier. Watching this to prepare myself for whatever the outcome may be! Fantastic advice!
This hits hard for me, I used to feel like I was getting slighted everytime I didn't get a role. Im on the heavier side for girls(over 200) but my i have a lot of experience in the musical department. I got cast as irsula one year freakin lost it cuz I felt like I only got it since I was heavier than the other girls. In reality my director later told me it was because she thought the other actresses couldnt hold pitch and I had the best range lol (I had no idea). So I showed up to every rehearsal and my sister became a swing for the show. When we did the show my Sister(playing Sebastian) and I got a standing ovation for our numbers and everyone said we were amazing. My friends who came to see the show said they litterally only remember our scenes in it. So now I think a little differently about casting in general.
We had the same senior musical! I was so excited to be doing Wizard of Oz but then was devastated because I got Aunt Em after trying out for Tim Man. It was't that I was upset because it wasn't a big enough part like a lot of people seemed to think I was, I just felt like I was typecasted a lot and was trying to avoid it happening again so it was always hard when it did. I'm also with you on volunteering for stuff while working on a show! I volunteered for certain scenes that hadn't been cast originally, to be a "swing" for certain scenes when that was needed, as well as communicating with the set design people about happenings and stuff. I also choreographed for the musical's "preview" at the school Christmas concert that year. Another year we did Willy Wonka and since I wasn't really in the second act much I volunteered to be one of the people to hide on set and blow bubbles in one scene and decorate and carry a door across the stage in another (3 hours of decor work for 3 seconds on stage lol).
Oh I know the typecast game very well - as a taller girl (I'm 5'10") I have rarely been cast as a younger character and have often been chosen as the older/motherly roles for that reason. Sigh. I love all of the volunteer work that you've done! The people running the show 100% see that and appreciate it, I'm certain!
In Year 6 my year group did a show called Olivia, which was a girl version of Oliver Twist. I really wanted to be Eliza Doolittle but I got the Artful Dogder instead. I remember my heart dropping but I had to smile because my teacher told the results directly to me. A few moments later, I realized it was so much better being Dodger rather than Eliza because my best friend was Fagin and we got to sing 2 duets together whilst Eliza just sang 1 solo. 5 months after the final production, I stumble across this video and your overall and think to myself, 'I wish I'd seen your channel sooner'. 😅
I absolutely love theater my school was doing beauty and the beast and I auditioned for Mrs. Potts and got a callback for chip! The day of the callback I thought I did amazing and I did high schoolers were there their jaws dropped when I sang and acted but when I looked at the cast list for major roles my name was nowhere I played it cool in-front of my parents but went to my room and cried for 2 days it is the second day of me crying.. I really wanted that role and still do I’m crying while typing this I’m really passionate about theater and I was really passionate about chip and I was so so so confident that I would get it but I was wrong..
Yes!!! I felt this so much my bestfriend got the role I dreamt for and she wanted a different part I feel so happy for her but i feel bad and it also feels wrong to feel bad
My friends told me to not audition for Nala in Lion king school musical because it is more competitive role and she doesn't want me to Yap or cry or upset. I appreciate that even I still disagree. The most important process in audition for me is practice, not the result. Edit: BTW got the role young Nala since I’m the first year here in the musical. The practice though make my singing three times better.
Auditioned for Cinderella and i’m a senior. It was between me and a junior girl. Both of our auditions were great, no comparison to the other kids, we were even told so by the other kids in the cast and one of the directors. I got the stepmother and she got a stepsister, the lead went to a freshman. Unanimously among the cast we agree she can’t act or sing, something weird is going on but at least I got a role.
in my theatre group i call me and 2 others the “elite three” boys because we are the boys that usually get roles, all 3 of us fumbled our audition and i’m super excited for whats to come for us
I just auditioned for Annie jr. I kept telling myself I wouldn’t get it so I don’t jinx it, the cast list comes out. I got the role as Duffy. I’m really upset about it. As I said, it’s a big production so it’s in 2 half’s like other plays. So I play Duffy in the second half where I only have 2 lines. Thanks for the advice! :)
I'm proud of you! As a director I am always looking at what characters are doing in the background of a scene. I want to see actors who are reacting to what is happening, even if it isn't "their turn" to speak. If you really give your all to your reactions in the scenes you're in, I'm certain you'll stand out in this show
Today I got the cast list for beauty and the beast and Belle had been my dream role since I can remember. Needless to say I didn’t get it I got ensemble and cried. My mum had just brought me some beauty and the beast stuff for Christmas and I am not ready for that moment yet. But anyway to make matters worst I only just found out every person who got a main role was part of the choir ran by the teacher who runs the musical and apparently she was only picking ppl who was apart of it which is unfair ngl
I just auditioned for beetlejuice and practiced for months. My sister barley practiced and I had to teach her all the songs. But then she got part I wanted because she was older.and I got ensemble….
I wanted to be cast as a character for Grand Carnivale at the theme park I work in and wasn't cast at all. I was told that I can be a spotter which is walking next to a float during the parade while watching all the other dancers and performers perform. My heart was crushed. This is my fourth year trying to get into Grand Carnivale and not making it. I always get these lesser non-performing roles that nobody wants. I'm a performer for the live entertainment department and put on shows as a costume Peanuts character. At these auditions, they always say that they're looking for performers and not dancers and don't care if you can dance and have the techniques. People at my job always say that one of the best performers for the costume Peanuts character and how I go above and beyond in costume and how I'm what people are looking for in performers but I never get chosen. I had rehearsals yesterday and it was hard for me to get excited while walking next to a float and thinking about what could've been if I was one of the performers.
Sending you all the reassuring vibes! First of all, how AWESOME that you get to perform as a job, that's amazing! I wonder if you could reach out to the casting department and ask for feedback on your audition/placement? Beings it is a professional setting they may be able to provide that for you, but I would ask around first to make sure asking for feedback is normal practice. I am sorry that you didn't get the role you were hoping for this time, but I'm sure there will be other awesome opportunities in your future
I feel like a lot of the time at my school the “director’s vision” already includes who she plans to cast because it’s always gonna be the people whose parents grew up here or the people who are “in” with the director. It’s probably not good for me to think like this though, do you have any tips to try to look at the whole thing differently?
I get nervous bc I’m a senior and I didn’t get the part I wanted but also people tell me that I’m a good actor/singer but I didn’t get a good role and it crushed me not because I’m trying to be the stereotypical senior who quits and complains and is just being a baby.. but I was upset bc all the other seniors got leads and I was the only person who didn’t get a big part but I’m not trying to be a complaining asshole but the director also played favorites and she would butter me up just to bring me down it it was kind of mentally abusive so that’s why I quit.. but I feel bad talking about it cause I feel like everyone just assumes I’m being that selfish toxic senior that quit just bc she didn’t get the lead
FIrst of all if someone i know from school is reading this thats kind of embarrassing but i feel inclined to share a bit of my own philosophy on theater. If you wanted a lead role and you got a smaller part, then you can be grateful that you have so much less work to do. Less lines to memorize, less songs to memorize, less blocking, less pressure. People scrutinize the lead characters. The other ones not so much. You can get involved in other ways if you want to, but if you don't, you have great time to just relax. Also, just because you're a side character doesn't mean nobody is going to remember you. That's only if you half ass it. If you put your all into it and really work, you can be that one side character that people are like wait that little flying monkey was so funny omg. Like you can honestly do whatever. I had my director tell me to my face that I'd never get a singing or even speaking role because I couldn't sing. Did I cry? Yes actually I cried a lot. But then I took the initiative to instead build my singing voice. He ended up telling me that he missed me and my positive energy during the production as I ended up not doing it after the comment he made. Never take side character as forgettable character, they are not the same thing!
so my school is doing mean girls jr. Callbacks we’re today, and I auditioned for Aaron. They had me read for aaron a lot, but they also had a boy in the grade above me read for him. As someone who is afab, I’m really doubting myself because I feel like the other guy is a much better fit. But, my two friends are literally perfect for Regina and Gretchen. So i’m just afraid that i’m going to be terribly disappointed when my friends get leads and i get ensemble. I want to think I have a chance, but I feel like the disappointment would be larger if i got my hopes up. The cast list comes out tonight, probably in about an hour. I’m just really scared
Sending you all the positive vibes! Regardless of what your role is in the show, it sounds you have friends who will be there experiencing the show with you, and that is wonderful on its own.
I auditioned for my fall play I wanted the part of the main character they post the cast list and I was cut so not even in the show whatsoever what did I do I realized this is a play yes I wanted that role I didn't get I'm slightly disappointed and then remembered there's still the spring musical plus I like musicals better and then I reevaluated my audition and figured out why I didn't get the role That is a healthy example of how I handled that here is a not so healthy example I audition for the spring musical (which was not cut so I'd be in the show no matter what) the cast list is posted I wanted the main role and thought I'd finally get a role other than ensemble The cast list is posted on New Years eve right as it became midnight and I scroll for my name Ensemble is written next to my name and I cried so much because I didn't get the role I wanted but as we did rehearsals I realized being in the ensemble wasn't all that bad because i was in most of the songs that I wouldn't have been in otherwise And so it was a learning experience that prepared me for my rejection when I didn't get the role i wanted in the play I also decided to listen to the musical memorize it and find which character I know that I can be and not to get my hopes to high in case I dont get the role I want everything I s a learning experience and everyone handles things diffrent t ya that's how i delt with rejection and this video was also quite helpful
In my last school play, Teen Court, I auditioned for one of the two parts that had singing moments. I thought I had a fair shot as a chorus girl. I didn’t get either. I got a middle aged football coach. What did I do? I put my heart and soul into being that middle aged man
Im auditioning for Rita from the Made in Dagenham musical im 90 precent sure i wont get it but im still gonna audition my best as ive learnt casting directors see u play one role and think u suit another.
My school casts everyone as someone every time I haven’t ever gotten the lead I got tinkerbelle once but that was the highest until yesterday I got Rudy from the book thief every other year I got ensemble!!! I’m so happy I got it this time because there was the biggest group of people that have ever tried out for the school production!! I always doubt myself so much when doing this sometimes it’s so I don’t get too upset especially this time as this is the first time they ever even did callbacks there was me and 2 other people for Rudy but I tried not to get my hopes up because the other two people where younger than me (rudys a 10yr old I’m 14) but I guess they didn’t care I could tell when I finished my audition something great was going to happen I just saw that look on my drama teachers faces 😂! I have had all the drama teachers now which I think is a plus because they all know how well I can act! I know this comment is really long but I’m just so excited although I do only have 7 weeks to learn my lines and I have a languages exam a couple days before and I only started learning the language a few days ago but I think it will be worth every second to prove that I’m worthy of another lead lol!! I love your videos and they are always really useful when i want some tips or just a review ❤❤❤
I opened this video while I'm waiting for the Legally Blonde cast list... and the first clip killed me off 😂 It was due out 15 mins ago but our director is always late AHHHHH
I’m doing the jungle book musical and I auditioned for baloo right, I go to the cast list and see my name next to an elephant a AN ELEPHANT?????!!!!!! I’m sorry it’s just not the part for me Why couldn’t I have gotten baloo I look like him and sound like him
I auditioned for and got to the final callbacks for Gabriella in HSM jr. I got Kelsi..(I know it’s still good I overreact lol) Honestly I think I could be better as Gabriella, but Kelsi is a more fun role so I’m trying to get excited! & I didn’t get ensemble so that’s good!,
What if this is my upmenth show with these directors, and they know how diligent I am and how hard I work, but they keep giving me minor roles? What do I do now?
Girl I was in all the shows in my primary year One was the pirates of the Caribbean witch I tried for Liza (I didn’t make it ) instead my enemy got it and kept throwing it in my face this year I alditioned for the queen of hearts in Alice in wonderland and my best friend got the role infact I didn’t even get a role😢
I tried harder and studied how my character move and act, but apparently people who just started theatre 3 can literally get bigger roles than me. I literally watched the whole movie beauty and the beast (my school musical) just to know the plot and songs. And the crazy part is that the person who got the role I wanted (cogsworth) doesn't even have talent (SHE CAN NOT SING NOT TRYING TO BE RUDE) and she didn't even know cogsworth have a British accent so idk how tf she got the role, she only get certain roles because they're very confident. I put emotion into the song I was singing I even showed anger in parts that showed anger I did pauses blah blah blah. My friend did not like her role but she still got an enchanted role WHEN ITS HER FIRST TIME DOING THIS. And what I found out today which made me more mad, is that my character isn't even in the named character list, I'm a fucking bookseller and the villagers who was in the list. I always get low roles and I was told I can sing but I don't believe that because now I think they're just saying that to lift me up when they give me low role. I was scared but still pulled the best I can.
I tried out for Donkey and Gingy in Shrek Jr., and I ended up getting mama bear. I’m very upset, but I’ve been trying to look at the bright side. Although I was casted as Mama Bear, I was also casted go be a featured dancer. I’m going to try to embrace my role and not complain so that my directors take consideration of me for my next musical. Thank you for this video. It really made me feel better! 🩷
I loved reading your perspective, thankyou for sharing!
If you choose to keep the role, although I would understand if you chose not to, here would be my advice:
-The prince is a goofy ridiculous role.
Break a leg
@@cayleejo thanks!!!
I have a similar situation, the part was given to my best friend.
The way “theatre friends” corrected to “feet are friends” 😭
And also costume and set design can still be very fun, even if it’s not what you were picturing!
Thankyou so much for sharing your experiences! I hope that others read your comment and are inspired by your hard work and perseverance! Break a leg!
@@cayleejothanks
Also Kevin g is a really embarrassing part I have no idea why the teacher casted me as him I cannot rap for my life
I’m just sad because I probably will never be in this musical and it was my dream to be Karen or Gretchen.

This video is absolutely FANTASTIC!!! THANK YOU!!! I will be sharing with my beloved theatre students!!!
I’m so happy to hear you find it helpful, thankyou for sharing 💕.
@@cayleejo Thank you so much! Appreciate the kind words ❤️

But I end up getting a step sister and I audition for 5 other leads
Also I was crying while I was watching this video
THANK YOU! I auditioned for my first musical today, and I thought I did very well. I cannot get ensemble, or I cannot do the play due to time constraints, but I hope this helps me if I don’t make it in. If you were wondering, I auditioned for Killer Queen in “We Will Rock You” the musical.
I got a role! The characters name is Khashoggi and he/she is a very fun role to play!
Thankyou for sharing and congrats to you on a job well done

I completely understand but am so glad that you ended up enjoying the process
It's my final show with the group I'm in and we are putting on SpongeBob, my dream role has been SpongeBob for years and my best friend got cast as SpongeBob. My other best friend got cast as Sandy, and I got Plankton. I have no right to dislike my role but I really love the role of SpongeBob, it means to much to me. I have a story behind it and everything. I was distraught. I almost declined my role but realized that the director favorites my friends and because my first year with her I was a pain I suffered the consequences. I'm still totally bummed though! :(
i just auditioned for babbette in beauty and the beast and ill know who i get next week ill keep yall updated!
i got ensemble
BUT WHAT ABOUT IF U DIDNT GET A PART 😭😭😭😭😭😢😢😢😢
Same
I’m doing high school musical, and tried out for sharpay.
I didn't get the role i wanted😢
The practice though make my singing three times better.
i got casted in shrek jr 2 days ago and i got snow white and that’s the smallest role i’ve ever gotten so far but at least i got in the cast though!
Getting a part is better than nothing!
@@-_PlutoLuto_- yes :D
If you really give your all to your reactions in the scenes you're in, I'm certain you'll stand out in this show
So far I've been in one play and one musical, I have yet to get cast in the role I wanted, but I had a blast playing the parts I got
I am sorry that you didn't get the role you were hoping for this time, but I'm sure there will be other awesome opportunities in your future
at the start its so true last year i was at the bottom and hopefully i get the role for my west end show this year
I feel like a lot of the time at my school the “director’s vision” already includes who she plans to cast because it’s always gonna be the people whose parents grew up here or the people who are “in” with the director.
Dang your school goes crazy with it meanwhile mine doesn’t even have a stage
so my school is doing mean girls jr.
Regardless of what your role is in the show, it sounds you have friends who will be there experiencing the show with you, and that is wonderful on its own.
what did you end up getting?
I auditioned for my fall play I wanted the part of the main character they post the cast list and I was cut so not even in the show whatsoever what did I do I realized this is a play yes I wanted that role I didn't get I'm slightly disappointed and then remembered there's still the spring musical plus I like musicals better and then I reevaluated my audition and figured out why I didn't get the role
That is a healthy example of how I handled that here is a not so healthy example
I audition for the spring musical (which was not cut so I'd be in the show no matter what) the cast list is posted I wanted the main role and thought I'd finally get a role other than ensemble
The cast list is posted on New Years eve right as it became midnight and I scroll for my name
Ensemble is written next to my name and I cried so much because I didn't get the role I wanted but as we did rehearsals I realized being in the ensemble wasn't all that bad because i was in most of the songs that I wouldn't have been in otherwise
And so it was a learning experience that prepared me for my rejection when I didn't get the role i wanted in the play I also decided to listen to the musical memorize it and find which character I know that I can be and not to get my hopes to high in case I dont get the role I want everything I s a learning experience and everyone handles things diffrent t ya that's how i delt with rejection and this video was also quite helpful
In my last school play, Teen Court, I auditioned for one of the two parts that had singing moments. I thought I had a fair shot as a chorus girl. I didn’t get either. I got a middle aged football coach. What did I do?
I put my heart and soul into being that middle aged man
I love your story, thankyou for sharing!
@@cayleejo thank you for sharing theatre content. I really enjoy it
Im auditioning for Rita from the Made in Dagenham musical im 90 precent sure i wont get it but im still gonna audition my best as ive learnt casting directors see u play one role and think u suit another.
I’m sorry it’s just not the part for me
Why couldn’t I have gotten baloo I look like him and sound like him
I auditioned for and got to the final callbacks for Gabriella in HSM jr. I got Kelsi..(I know it’s still good I overreact lol) Honestly I think I could be better as Gabriella, but Kelsi is a more fun role so I’m trying to get excited! & I didn’t get ensemble so that’s good!,
I love this story 🐒
Hello love! How did you do the brick road with the lighting?
Ok so I will try to be the best tentacle
What if this is my upmenth show with these directors, and they know how diligent I am and how hard I work, but they keep giving me minor roles? What do I do now?
Girl I was in all the shows in my primary year One was the pirates of the Caribbean witch I tried for Liza (I didn’t make it ) instead my enemy got it and kept throwing it in my face this year I alditioned for the queen of hearts in Alice in wonderland and my best friend got the role infact I didn’t even get a role😢
I wanted o be queen of hearts
I was scared but still pulled the best I can.
what if i love theater but the program is toxic?
is it bad that i was jealous of all the leads and noticed every poor acting choice and thought someone else would do better then them??
honestly, probably, I do too though. It makes me feel better so I do it lol.
