In MY Company (Not FDNY) I would KILL for a 2 minute out the door response .. We are Volunteer so we do the best we can, and that's all you can ask for ... Be SAFE, and do your best ...
I'm surprised it said "Acting Ladder" I thought they were all pre-recorded for the station they're used at. I wouldn't expect to hear "Battalion" at a house with no chief, or "Engine" while at Rescue 1.
They were 2nd Due as far as the Engine goes ... The Chief, & Truck are 1st Due ... The ticket just said "Emergency", but it was for a Suspicious Package Call on 43rd. St. ... The response was delayed due to all the media present at the station ... Ladder 4 was already out of service due to this, and 30 Truck was covering ... BTW the Package and call were unfounded ... Have the ON-SCENE Video posted on here too ...
Tone dropped at 0:21, they made good time still. When people say they're going too slow they're expecting to see the guys sprinting every where, which would more than likely result in an injury due to a missed step when one takes a flying leap on to the moving engine.

Thank you for the answer :) And of course every dept., full, part-time or volunteer, do their best, every time the alarm goes off, and thats what it's all about :) I was a volunteer for several years, then got offered a full-time postion, so now I do both, and I know it's impossible to respond in 1 or 2 minutes, as a volunteer, because of the transportation time, and thats of course sad, but the most important thing is to do your best, no matter what the law says :) ... Take care out there ;)
@FdNy8231 and @superpludder Just for reference: that firehouse is located on 48th street and 8th avenue. The emergency was on 43rd, literally 5 blocks away. which is probably also why (as well as the media and people) they didn't seem like to be in a rush.
@15georgest an ACTING company is ANY company engine or truck, or even a chief that is assigned to replace that company due to them being out of service for whatever reason ... be that a call or breakdown or media day such was the case here ... In this case Ladder 30 was at Ladder 4, and as such was known as Ladder 30 Acting Ladder 4 ....

My dept in Florida is a paid Dept and during the day we have to be responding within 1 minute of dispatch. During the middle of the night we have to be rolling in 1 min, 30 sec's of dispatch.
@15georgest When a truck goes out of service like ladder 4 which is a truck that must be covered a different company comes in to cover them , ladder 4 was out of service because of the media interviews I believe
Alot has changed from the 70s . Turnout gear is a little more complicated, the truck has seats with seat belts. . Trucks take longer to start and are way more complicated radio dispatch is complicated as well
@highlander148 I don't know if that's exactly true ... 30 Truck is from Harlem and they are not "Quiet" up there by any means ... The dispatchers move the Companies as they see fit ... If one area is a little quiet then they could conceivably spare one from that area for a while, BUTTTTT 4 Truck is one of the Companies that MUST be covered ... so busy or not they bring um in ... :)
@jasonbsa The reason you haven't seen those units is because I rarely get out of MIDTOWN no UPTOWN, or DOWNTOWN units YET ... I WORK in Midtown 3 days a week for 6 hours each day so time is limited and I WALK to each scene you see here ... I do have plans on moving around the city a little more so keep your eyes open and we'll see what happens .... Hopefully you are enjoying what your seeing so far ... :)
I took a group of youngteenagers to visit a fire station in a large town. We were instructed that if the alarm went off we were to flatten ourselves against the walls and wait for instructions. We practiced.
Peace disturbance laws...bah! Make it look like a Christmas Tree and make it louder than anything on the road. There should be no "I didn't see it/I didn't hear it" excuse. My department can make a deaf and blind person know we are coming, until it's nighttime. With great machines, comes great responsibility. If people want us to cut down on the lights and noise, they should pay more attention so we don't have to go the extra mile.
theres no set time here.. im a RAM at my local department, and the way it works here is you're dispatched, and if you do not respond within 5 minutes, you get dispatched again, after that if you do not respond they call in another department. although that rarely happens, unless it is like 3 in the morning of course haha, but theres no punishment for not responding if you do not get enough guys to take a rig out, you just call into fire control and let them know
Yeah, exactly. Though FDNY is a different animal being career and totally non-volunteer. My county is the same, I have heard a few times on the radio our Station 75 requesting second and third pages before just finally telling dispatch 'Dispatch 2nd/3rd due, insufficient personnel, Station 75 assignment compete'. Though, while no they don't get 'in trouble', if it happens enough you'll P-O your Mutual Aid companies for sure.
I couldn't hear what the call-out said, but I think that this station was 2nd due, because I've seen other videos of FDNY responding 1st due and they're out of the station in less than a minute
It is more imperative for the units to go as they have the lifesaving equipment, and more manpower to act versus him, and on this call there were already other units responding and on the street. Engine 65 was 2 blocks away, and made the scene first
I understand they have the equipment but, that command vehicle could have responded without delaying the others and provided command instruction, scene size up or other functions. it just amazes me how units that could respond just delay.
And I forgot to mention that their SOP's are that the Engine or Truck goes first unless the Chief is the only unit assigned on the box. Either way the first officer on the scene would automatically assume command.
Also, when driving to a run in Midtown Manhattan traffic, with lights & siren. It is safer to move traffic out of the way as one unit with the Engine, Truck & Battalion Chief all responding together to the Box.

While that is TRUE ... There are still a FEW (count them on 1 hand) a few of the OLD Federal Q's being used in the FDNY. I think they are being used mainly by the Rescue Companies ...
I get the chills when I see the trucks go by with the flag waving in the wind. I made sure my truck had a little flag in Afghanistan. As a gunner over there it made me feel so good to always see that flag in my peripheral vision.

Exactly. Most of those people making the comments aren't firefighters anyway or are volunteers.
then i can tell you as a firefighter from Denmark. if our trucks hasn't left the station in under 1 minute we are fined by the municipality
