You freaking legend, I remember using this book way back in the day & had completely forgotten it until this video. Also that section on light in the atmosphere I'm going to direct all my newbies too each & every time, one of the best summations as to what's happening in the sky around - also appeals to my ex-geography teacher brain. Thanks man
Lovely! Must be a truly wonderful book. Unfortunately, shipping, customs charges and so on to Europe are rather prohibitive. But I appear to be lucky: there's a second hand copy for a friendly price in a bookstore locally, so I just ordered that. Yippee! 😊
If there were Academy Awards for UA-cam videos, this would be the video of the year! I watch a lot of photographers, but I've never learned so much about light in 26 minutes. Nick, you are brilliant!
This video should be mandatory in every serious photo school, I tough it was going to be dry but the explanation of light at sunset was so well explained, I learned more on sunset in this video than 5 years of actual sunset photography
How refreshing to have a photographer who understands the physics behind the light, and can explain it easily. I don't think any other photographer on this platform has ever said more than "it's golden hour" , when talking about sunsets. I will look forward to more of this informative content.
The man travels from an extraordinary photographer's guide to a brilliant guide. I never thought I would compare anyone to Ansell Adams, but here we are.
You failed to mention that the center of the Twilight Arch is known as the Twilight Zone -- the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge
Know a guy from Greenland who photographed an blue hour photo of the ice. A very special moment that only last at best 1 minute. Where all ice turns blue. A color you never thought possible. It also interresting just when it becomes dark and make an long exposure photo. You can make it look like day, but the colors are different, no reflection in windows.
I can't tell you how surreal it is you are there. I grew up in that neighborhood. In 1999 I rented movies from a video store across the street. I remember when that sears was open. Beautiful image & a stroll down memory lane.
Wrote a whole essay in a comment and an ethernet failure destroyed it all when posting without a copy. Now a shorter version. *I am very much impressed by this video.* One doesn't really know what's inside on basis of the thumbnail and title alone. It is only after 7 minutes that the real show starts to unravel _("Anatomy of a Sunset" and onwards)._ I frown at the possibility of have overseen this, which might easily have happened. Am subscribed on mere handful of channels in all these years, and this will be my first sub based on the first video viewed. After my purchase of the Pana-Leica 100-400mm lens in 2021 I started photographing more *sunsets* and *sunrises.* The spectacle proved beyond my all expectations - the astronomy dynamics, the swift and unexpected changes of light, color, mood, movement of the sun, atmospherics, vistas, meteorology, birds, airplanes, all that is fascinating. All that you teach in this class therefore comes so familiar and is most welcome. It is essentially a low-light phenomenon, so the MFT sensor of my camera is not quite suited tot the task. But still, even looking at it through the viewfinder is sometimes rewarding enough. In my youth I photographed twilight, dusk and similar landscapes using the film rolls. To my surprise, the digital sensor now doesn't seem to be more sensitive/responsive to that kind of light. The film captured it better. It is a sort of paradox, as during the daylight it is actually the other way around. You've most likely noticed this and know why it happens, so there you have it, an idea for a future video of yours? Can't wait to see more of this stuff. Keep up your fantastic didactic work.
didn't expect to learn this much about sunsets but oh man was i captivated right off the jump lmao- you've just got that teacher essence. incredible shot and video once again!
Wow!! We ate this episode up. Please DO make future DAPs as instructive and detailed as this. My husband and I learned a lot and a lot of what we learned is applicable to our photography efforts. Such a great presentation of the dynamics of a sunset/rise, of how it works and how we can now put that fuller understanding to work, making use of the different components of a sunset/rise, including that that compelling twilight arch. Brilliant episode. Thank you for all you put into it.
At first I was wondering why I should watch such a long video about an old Sears building. However, after a view minutes into the video it got me. Really compelling and fascinating stuff. Well done 😊 ….
The information in this video just blew my mind. What an amazing explanation of how sunlight reacts with the atmosphere and changes throughout a sunset/sunrise. So much invaluable information here. Also, these photos are absolutely stunning. I personally love the colour palette of photo # 3. Amazing stuff Mr. Carver!
Continuous learning is our journey. Nick, your presentations are outstanding! Your channel keeps me engaged with valuable information. Please, keep up the great work with the DAP series! 🌟
Great Video as usual, Nick. Good thing you took the photo now because the owner of the old Sears building in Riverside is planning on tearing it down to build apartments and retail. There is some resistance among the local population but most likely will proceed.
Not forgetting the ‘Belt of Venus’ in the east on a setting sun and the earths shadow as seen below that! 😮 Fantastic vid Nick enjoyed this immensely hope for future ‘dissecting a photo’ - DAP
I have so much respect for the effort and time you put into each individual photo/composition, and the end results are incredible. Getting to peak inside your head about what you're thinking about and why you do different things is such a valuable learning tool at least for me. This is for sure my favorite video you've put out by far. And I can nerd out about the science side of this stuff all day! Can't wait to see more.
The explanation of sunset light was weirdly interesting. As a teacher I can appreciate the way you explain these things in such a simple and visual way.
This video was superb - one of the best photography videos I have watched for a very long time. Please do more and please don't make them shorter or lighter - youtube is a awash with short lightweight videos and this was excellent for its depth. I would love you to cover the movements on a large format camera in depth - I only really use rise and fall and your explaination of side shift was so helpful.
All too often I’ve left a scene after an unimpressive sunset only to miss the great light. Now, I know it was the twilight arch. What a cool video. Thanks.
here's my decent response: this is awesome. I am endlessly fascinated with how you do such a great job of taking a somewhat mundane subject and making it compelling. Caveat: I actually find urban/rural decay to be endlessly fascinating. Anyhow, I'd love to see more in this series.
Great image review. One of the things I loved about living in SoCal was the winter sunsets. Something about the light, colors, orientation of the sun, etc. all came together to create really magical scenes.
Thank you so much Nick! I have noticed these changes from sunset to blue hour but never really chronicled it here or understood it as you have presented here. Would love to see more from "Dissecting a Photo".
I learned so much from this video, man. you have been my fav teacher for years. Please keep these coming. Its not only a photography lesson but also super interesting physic and nature science.
This was awesome. I’m not into photography but loved every minute. One small suggestion: when showing the difference between two pictures, you had the second one fade in quickly from the left. It would be helpful to pause for a moment with the screen split 50/50 between the two images to really see what’s going on.
My only regret is, that i had no teacher like you when i was going to school.. Great and simple explanation of sunrise and sunset light conditions. And that fine photo too. I wish you always good light! Contributed and greetings from Czech Republic. (sorry for my poor english). JT
Thanks for a great new video Nick, great content and every day is a school day, as a student of your excellent metering system the linked content is also appreciated. With the price of film these days your metering system course pays for itself very quickly.
Mind blown several times. Will I dare to afirm that your talent as an educator surpasses your talent as a photographer? (Agreeing that the baseline as a photographer has already been proved)
Outstanding work, both with the camera (as always) but especially the teaching. Some of this I...knew...but didn't really know how to explain *how* I knew it. Your explanations and illustrations are beyond perfect. The whole time I was thinking, "Yeah! Right! I remember now!"
Great video Nick! I photograph often in SW Utah (Zion) and notice the shift of this twilight arch from day to day. Certain times produce a much stronger arch and glow, particularly after a storm or during “breezy” days blowing all your CA dust into Nevada😂 Fascinating to see when it’s strong where the yellowish-orange glow fills half the sky, other times it’s minimal and nothing noteworthy. It’s usually predictable for the intense glow but also surprises you as you’ve likely seen in the Mojave.
I love your explanation about the twilight arch! I've been teaching this in the studio, but its something hard to explain outside the studio! The technical explanation is fascinating. I’m looking forward to you next DAP video’s!
I think this is my favorite video you’ve ever done. It’s right up my alley and I just ordered the book. Thanks so much. I’d love to see more videos like this.
Thank you Nick! You may have just solved a big piece of a photographic puzzle I've been trying to solve. A local antique shop in my small town has a lot of character but only gets light on its face during the first hour in the morning at this time of year. During that hour, trees phone poles and streetlights cast distracting shadows. This might be possible just before sunrise!
What a brilliant video - I can't wait for the rest of this series. I have also worked through your metering workshop and this is such a good supplement to that!
Good news! Turns out you can still get this book new directly from the author at www.colorandlightinnature.com
Just ordered my copy. Super stoked. Great video. Re-watching it with my wife, another photographer tonight.
You freaking legend, I remember using this book way back in the day & had completely forgotten it until this video. Man in 26 minutes you've just turbo charged my understanding of sunsets.
Right!!
I don’t get it at all.
Absolute brilliant explanation of how the light works when it passes through our atmosphere.
Yes, please continue this dissection series.
I’m a painter not a photographer. But your explanations regarding light, sunset etc. will definitely impact my painting style. Thank you!
Agreed. I think he’s the closest we’ve got to a modern Ansel.
This man is THE photographer’s photographer. I have never found anyone who offers as much useful information as you.
man i cannot believe i sit tight for 26 minutes of this. i understand sunset and physic behind it way better than im at collage lol. i like this!
This was unbelievably good. Please do more.
A masterful requiem for the Sears chain of stores. R.I.P. Sears.
You failed to mention that the center of the Twilight Arch is known as the Twilight Zone -- the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge
At the end I realized the trees are growing on and through the building. Wonderful video, Nick!

This shouldn’t be for free. Thanks Nick please keep doing this kind of work.
Very nice. Thoroughly describes the “why” of the rapid color changes at sunset.
Wrote a whole essay in a comment and an ethernet failure destroyed it all when posting without a copy.
Now a shorter version.

Thoroughly enjoyed this format. Your explanation of the effects of the light/sunset was very beneficial. Great work!
High five on the sunset analysis, Professor Carver.
didn't expect to learn this much about sunsets but oh man was i captivated right off the jump lmao- you've just got that teacher essence. incredible shot and video once again!

I enjoyed the technical parts about light and sunsets. If you're on the fence about that stuff in the future, keep it in.

Master teacher at work. Mad Apple Keynote skills on display! Great use of shapes and animations. Much respect.
Thanks Nick. Wow. Yes, more please. Proper photographic art and so far from digital auto-everything. What a joy.
That explanation of light is masterful. I think I love you.
Great Video as usual, Nick. Good thing you took the photo now because the owner of the old Sears building in Riverside is planning on tearing it down to build apartments and retail. There is some resistance among the local population but most likely will proceed.
I love learning technical jargon that explains what's happening! Thank you!
You sir are the gift that keeps on giving the whole year. ;) Lovin' this new DAP series.
Not forgetting the ‘Belt of Venus’ in the east on a setting sun and the earths shadow as seen below that! 😮

This might be the best photography-related UA-cam video I've ever seen. Chapeau.
While I enjoy all the videos you create, I really enjoyed this new dissecting series you are starting. I hope you continue this idea.
One of your best videos Nick. Your explanation of the light changes at sunset was thoroughly engrossing. Certainly hope you do more "DAP's".
Thanks Nick! I learnt more about sunsets in this video that the last 10+ years. You’re awesome! (Loved geeking out over the finer details!)
The explanation of sunset light was weirdly interesting. As a teacher I can appreciate the way you explain these things in such a simple and visual way.

Super interesting video. Much better than a discovery channel documentary. Loved every minute of it.
I love this composition. And of course the colours👍
wow....A book review, a Hank Green level of science explanation and a photograph in one video? Please do more !
here's my decent response: this is awesome. I am endlessly fascinated with how you do such a great job of taking a somewhat mundane subject and making it compelling. Caveat: I actually find urban/rural decay to be endlessly fascinating. Anyhow, I'd love to see more in this series.
What an amazing resource! Thank you for putting this up for everyone to enjoy. Maybe the title deserves to include an explanation of sunset anatomy?
Very good video. Excellent explanation, masterful! Indirectly you have been able to perfectly explain why THE EARTH IS NOT FLAT!
Please continue the series!
What a class!! Love it. I always loved the twilight and blue hour but never knew why. It blew my mind.
Great image review. One of the things I loved about living in SoCal was the winter sunsets. Something about the light, colors, orientation of the sun, etc. all came together to create really magical scenes.
Hi Nick, thank you for explaining in such detail. Grettinge from Bavaria, Michael
That was TOTALLY MIND BLOWING.....thanks for making the complex simple....I learned so much today
That was an epic explanation for something we mostly take for granted and put no forethought into how the light is effecting sunset.

This was outstanding. Thanks Nick. Please continue with this series.
Only you can make blue light and wave lengths sound interesting! Great explanation!
Thanks again, Nick. As always, we enjoyed your explanation. It was educational and informational. We want more of these videos.
A better explanation of how natural light works then 2 years of photography school! Thanks man! :)
An absolutely brilliant video! Please keep this series going and feel free to make them as in depth as this one.
Thank you for a fantastic tutorial on sunsets and on your photos. Looking forward to more of your dissecting series.
Thank you. An eye-opener with these 26 minutes of dissection.
This was absolutely fascinating. I think that photographers at any level would find this explanation of sunset light invaluable.
Mind blown several times. Will I dare to afirm that your talent as an educator surpasses your talent as a photographer? (Agreeing that the baseline as a photographer has already been proved)
Wonderful! A masterclass in sunsets. Really enjoyed it, and a beautiful photo!
Amazing explainer Nick. It went way deep on sunsets-unlike most photography youtube videos, I actually learned something! 👏👏👏
Whoaaaa, what a video!!! Thanks man!! Such a good explanation!!! Thoroughly enjoyed this, and learnt something!!!!
Outstanding work, both with the camera (as always) but especially the teaching. Some of this I...knew...but didn't really know how to explain *how* I knew it. Your explanations and illustrations are beyond perfect. The whole time I was thinking, "Yeah! Right! I remember now!"
Nick, this was the most brilliant explanation on natural light I have ever seen!
Absolutely fascinating! I'll never shoot in the morning and evening and take the lighting for granted again. Thanks SO much!
That was awesome! Love the explanation for the changing colors at sunset. 😎
This explanation was genuinely beautiful. Great photos, and great videos.
Nick, I LOVED THIS!!! You’re a great teacher - I learned so much! Thank you 🙏
Thank you Nick. You are an excellent educator. Sunsets will never be the same again. 😊 ❤
Loved the explainer on the atmospheric effects on light. This channel just keeps getting better.

Dude, this was amazing, the physic and technical explanations were top notch, thank you for making this videos!
I want more of these. I mean I NEED more of these in my life!
I’ve been a school teacher for 15 years, I recognise a great lesson when I see one. Thank you.
it didnt feel long. im looking forward to more of this series. .
Love this new series and looking forward to more! The metering version was nicely done as well. Thanks
Golden hour for me! Sears was the place to shop growing up in the Midwest. More of this series please
I love your explanation about the twilight arch! I've been teaching this in the studio, but its something hard to explain outside the studio! The technical explanation is fascinating. I’m looking forward to you next DAP video’s!
This was great. I was not expecting the thorough discussion of all the ways light changes through sunset.
Love this Nick. Defo up for you doing more in the series. 👍👍👍
I think this is my favorite video you’ve ever done. It’s right up my alley and I just ordered the book. Thanks so much. I’d love to see more videos like this.
Super Super Interesting! Please more of that! :)
I'm learning so much! The camera technical aside... I am understanding how to see my subject. Thank you Nick.
I feel so much smarter after watching this one Nick!
That sunset explanation was freakin AWESOME.
One of the best series on the chanel
Hey Nick. This was an impeccable master class. Thanks a lot for such a well detailed DAP.
Fascinating new series - clarity of explanation is top notch too. Thanks Nick.
What a brilliant video - I can't wait for the rest of this series. I have also worked through your metering workshop and this is such a good supplement to that!
