I had an all Maple P-Bass in 1974 hard rock maple body and curly maple neck, i wish Fender would keep making those by the way, the wood is beautiful. The finish they used in the 70s didnt fade or wear off, you have to use some strong Paint Stripper to take off the finish.
Yes, those 70’s finishes were super sturdy, I found out the hard way when I tried to sand it off. I’m glad I abandoned that effort, and still have the original paint job mostly intact. I remember those maple P-Basses. Super cool!
Great lookin' Bass, I have a '78 Jazz Black with all blonde neck and fretboard w/ Pearl markers, Badd asss high mass bridge and hip shot, EMG passive selects from the 70's LOL Still rockin thru a *X10 Ampeg w/ SVT Sound is amazing all the wear marks are from me playing clubs, not Made to look old LOL
It was much easier for a kid working at McDonald's in the early 80s to buy a Fender. , then a kid now working at a McDonald's to do the same at $2300 ( for a vintage model) .
Right? I got my J-bass used in '77. I was 16 years old. And I worked at McDonalds. Two days a week, 16 hours on the weekend (was in school during the week). Made $2.30 an hour when min wage was $2.50. Those greedy bastards wouldn't even pay me minimum wage! So, my paycheck was less than $40.00 per week. I paid $300 for that bass. It was a big deal, believe me!
Well my first jobs was italian restaurant 2.90 HR then 3.35 in like 78 , ( at 13 years old ) bought Ibanez st50 and Kustom bass amp , later in HS McD's I think I was 6.35 save up for used jazz bass about $250. Was still a American Fender.
