  • Should I buy an old boat? Used boat, cheap boat or even a free boat! Sometimes you get lucky.
    I go over the costs and expenses for our first year of ownership with our old boat. Highlighting all the repairs and upgrades we did to make it a better boat for us. Our boat was over 40 years old when we bought it and it was quite cheap. But of course there were some surprises and a few more things to deal with than expected.

    I think you did a good job on this video, and you also did good on getting your boat out on the water last year, 25 times was good. We have a boat and was only out 3 times on ours, about 14 hours. Hang in there, we enjoy our boat as much as we can each year, most all of the time it is less than 25 times a year. But even being only that little amount of time on the water, I still do NOT EVER regret having a boat! It’s here when ever I can use it! Again, great job on the video! 👍

      Yeah it's definitely easier to get out more often when your boat is in a slip and not on a trailer. I'm actually trying to keep a log of our outings this year.

    Rinker is a good make. I have a 1991 Larson Fish & Ski. I replaced the transom and stringers and floor. It's really solid now. I probably have more than $20,000 into it now , but I've had it for around 15 years. And yes, I have been towed before. A new boat starts out over $30,000 so unless you plan to upsize, that boat has lots of potential. If it is maintained and upgraded, knowledgeable boaters will tip their hat to you. 😎👍

    i got a small yamaha 70 last year, steering was super stiff, had to replace that cable. 250 bucks. ouch, only paid 1400 for the boat, motor and trailer so not to bad. needed to replace the trim motor. was so lucky to find a guy selling his yamaha 70 motor, cables, controller, and trim, cuz he broke the water jacket. all for 300. had to do all the installation myself and had a boat wise neighbour help with the wiring for the trim. the previous owner took it all out when the old trim motor died. so for 2500 everything works great. now im watching your other videos to learn how to control it better. it keeps scaring me 🤣🤣

  • @quantumtechcrypto7080
    @quantumtechcrypto7080 13 днів тому

    Boating is a ROI mentality. Far too many people don’t consider the average trip cost. Example. You buy a new boat and todays boats are easily 150K. This means IF you take it out every weekend for a summer each trip will cost 10k. The more years you have the boat the less each trip costs but the kicker is boats degrade quickly if not meticulously taken care of. Buying a used boat can be the smartest investment IF low cost. The engine is the highest cost part. Check that very well. Look for rot. Just do research and due diligence and BE PATIENT. Anyway I see so many young families get owned by their boat. Then they resent it because it’s so expensive and they feel they need to justify cost by going all the time which adds even more cost, travel, gas, food, fees, etc. A small family will get overwhelmed with a costly boat. Start small. Start cheap. Do research take a knowledgeable friend, get it check by mechanic etc. there are deals but like opportunity you need to be prepared and willing. Best of luck. It’s great and it sucks too but can be great if most choices are the right ones.

    I paid $7k for a 2001 sterndrive bowrider. Thought I would at least get one season out of it before I had to do any work. Had to replace the battery, blower, rebuild the carb, change fuel water separator, clean spark arrestor, fix stereo mounting, fix trailer lights, and replace two blown trailer tires. No bimini top, just using clamp-on UV umbrellas.

    I watched the video, read the description and comments to find out what you meant by a "cheap" boat. I found out a lot of details about the boat, but not the price. So I'm still wondering what you had to pay for it? And, very good video...

    • @WayneTheBoatGuy
      @WayneTheBoatGuy  3 роки тому +3

      It was under $2,000 but I felt the price was irrelevant because “cheap” really is a fluctuating amount. Prices vary greatly by area, season and year. In Florida in 2019 a boat like this could probably be found for $700, while in the summer of 2020 in New Jersey something like this might have easily sold for $4,000.

    Hello Wayne, I've been watching your videos and especially your video on winterizing the Four Winns with the Volvo Penta 5.7 and duo prop. I told my wife that is the boat I want to get since I can go back to Wayne and figure out how to fix the problem. I just saw a short video of you saying that you would not buy another I/O again, I'm confused, my wife and I are retired and were looking forward to having Wayne as my navigator but NO. Are outboards better and less work?? I will not hold you responsible but can you give me some advice. Gil

    • @WayneTheBoatGuy
      @WayneTheBoatGuy  7 місяців тому

      Some I/O configurations are easier to work on than others. If your boat is used only in freshwater and not kept in the water, that is better for an I/O. Since I keep my boat in the water for 6 months, and am in brackish water, an outboard is a better choice for me. As I get older, I do not like climbing into the engine bay or contorting myself to change oil or drain the block. I also don't like having to think about the bellows. An outboard can fail completely and it won't sink the boat.

      Without seeing the boat, the concerns are that these boats were built with a wood core, so there is a very good chance that wood is in need of replacing after 30 years. This is not an easy job at all. Also the electronics and engine components are possibly original and may need to be completely replaced. Sometimes these older boats have an outdrive that is virtually impossible to get parts for.
      There is a reason that a lot of older big boats can be found cheaply - because they usually need a lot of work.

      Why can’t people ask questions nicely on Social Media?
      Wayne went out of his way to make this very educative video. Time and effort spent I could not do myself.
      Yes, first question that came to my mind after watching his video was how much was the boat initial cost?
      If you look up, he responded to another viewer who asked him nicely.
      Why do people think they can be nasty on Social Media?
      Are you also nasty to everyone when you go buy food at the supermarket?
      Next time you respond to a Social Media post, either ask a question nicely or just do not respond at all.
      No disrespect intended… 😊
