My favorite film of all time! The visuals and soundtrack had a massive impact on me that continues to resonate even still
Fantastic Planet is a powerful reminder of why the early 70s were a very special time for science fiction movies.
This kind of movie always reminds me of Albert Hoffman's autobiography: LSD, My Problem Child. In it he recounts a mystical experience he had in the woods as a child, and how in his work he was always pursuing knowledge with an openness to mysticism and clues from nature which ultimately gave birth to the compound LSD which in turn then took him further along the mystical path of discovery ( he lived to be 102 and died on my birthday in 2008).
I was attracted to this movie as a kid, long before I took acid, but somehow knew there were altered states of mind "out there" to be experienced, and this movie gave me a glimpse. Was it the movie that seeded my mind, or was I, like Hoffman, predisposed to mystical experiences?
Wondering if you plan on checking out Everything Everywhere All at Once. It seems up your alley and I would love to hear your thoughts on it.
I second this
I'd like to hear her take on that film too, but I can see her easily going the other way on that one too and really disliking it. Interested to find out.
Fucking LOVE this film. Nothing like it.
For context, the original French title is "La Planète Sauvage" - The Wild Planet (but ""sauvage" in French has a stronger, more dangerous meaning). The English translation loses a bit of flavour..
I was wondering why during the film they kept referencing the “Wild Planet,” and not the “Fantastic Planet.”
You should check out the band failure, they have an album based off this movie called fantastic planet…it’s one of the most under appreciated albums of the 90s imo
Have you seen or heard of Don Hertzfeldt's It's Such a Beautiful Day? It is quite similar in how it has a rudimentary quality but is also very experimental, surrealistic, and quite authentic. It's one of my personal favorite animated films.
I love this movie so much. I'm a huge fan of Monty Python and Terry Gilliam's work and it was because of an interview he did that I discovered this film as a kid. The visuals are hypnotic and stunning, and I have the score on vinyl. Highly recommend to those that haven't seen it!
A fair and detailed review. Very good. I saw the film when I was 10 years old in 1973. It set the bar high for me as far as looking for quality science fiction in cinema. There’s nothing in cinema now that will garner a similar review in the future. Cheers
Stumbled upon your channel because I just watched Fantastic Planet for the first time. I enjoyed your review. The story felt sort of like The Time Machine with the species living above ground and below. I wish it had been more drawn out with more detail. It felt hurried. It could have been in an episode format maybe. Subscribed, liked and going to look at your website now. Thanks.
Great video and discussion. The film is more of a really interesting experience more than a story, for me personally, and I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that.
Would love to hear you discuss Wizards by Ralph Bakshi at some point
So unique is the music that any mention of the title immediately triggers the soundtrack in my head.
interesting omission, You neglected to mention the feature that sets this animation apart from it's American counterpart, is the naturalism of the Om's Nudity in the tribe of wild Om's is common. American audiences found this a distinctive facet.
thank you for giving a review on this film
@2:55: Speaking of this film being "very French", it was basically psychedelic Smurfs!
Great film! My favorite cartoon ever. I saw it for the first time on the Syfy Channel in the 90's. The Criterion Collection Bluray is the best version of the film.
One of my absolute favorite movies of all time. I hope Criterion does a 4k. But the Blu-ray is great.
I have literally the biggest crush on you, even though I'm not personally that much in to movies I could listen to you talk about em for hours
women don't respond to men's thirsty outbursts. all your doing is degrading yourself with this kind of post.
@@gratuitousfootnote1183 Who are you again?
Amazing animation. I love it. I don't like the English title of "La Planète sauvage". Great review.
I love the Alain Goraguer soundtrack but I have a hard time getting into it. I’ve tried multiple times but can’t seem to get passed the silliness
Hey the 70`s were great mate
Please review everything everywhere all at once
Please, review "City of God".
Animation is never taken as seriously as live action. It’s interesting that this hasn’t changed very much over time.
I disagree, in my experience even in my backwards conservative country animation is taken much more seriously than it has before
Good video!
Gorgeous film. I freaking love the soundtrack which fits bizzarly with the visuals. Thanks for reviewing.
Awesome!
How deep!
Did you like all the old knives?
Big fan of this movie
love this movie
Belladonna of Sadness and this feel like first cousins
Can you do a video on how you review movies?

I loved it - it reminded me of the thigns you mentioned but I also remember as a kid watching a lot of European cartoons as a kid and they would show old cartoons but from western europe but also stuff from Eastern europe (it was cheap) so that also reminded me a bit of this movie
There's an irony to the animation.seriously??? It's the French style. Many such movies.
There’s this thing called a chair…
i talked a group of friends into going to an art house film. the movie was so boring i fell asleep. my friends were so mad
i think space is fake, but i still like space movies. that's how deep the conditioning goes unfortunately
