I’m with u…I’m not fighting the masses to source…as long as I know more than others and continue studying markets, I can always find items. “What’s meant for me, finds me!”
Your first minute here was so hilarious (I won’t be getting the eBay-taped side mirror out of my visuals for quite a long time! 🤣) I had to hit pause to call in my husband to watch it with me. Comedic timing AND delivery superb. If this reselling thing ever gets old you may want to try stand-up. Meanwhile, we are learning lots from your videos… thanks!
I went to an estate sale for the first time... I knew I was going to get overwhelmed, so I put in my earbuds and listened to really relaxing music. It gave me a safe buffer to take my time and enjoy the process
Enjoying your newer format of sprinkling viewer questions in your weekly what sold vids! Thanks for making us chuckle regularly, too. My husband is wondering whether you double check comps when you delist/relist in order to do any other price adjustments. What is your process? Re Facebook marketplace, how do you get people to respond? We are using your search tip for current listings, but people must not really want to sell their stuff. They aren’t answering the inquiries when we express interest and try to schedule a pick up. Thanks!
Im so thankful to be in a rural area! Sales can get a little crowded, but that’s pretty rare. I went to the first one of the season in the afternoon and walked out with 3 Gunne Sax dresses. I was basically the only person there.
There's a HUGE neighborhood sale coming up in June right near me. I've only gone once - before I was a reseller. Even though it's big, you still have to drive a good amount because it's not every other house. The pressure to make the most of it is real. I'm going to try and take it easy and whatever I get, I get. I've been using the beta version of your app, Flipwise, and by far my best returns/sales have come from random estate sale stuff. I went to one on a Sunday afternoon, family run, the second sale after a professional one a couple months prior. Walked in and thought it was going to be a dud. Mostly books. Picked one up that looked older & interesting... 25 cents turned into a $60 international sale. Dug a little more and found a few other random items and turned $20 into $150 and haven't even listed some the things yet. The community sales are tempting, though, because you're not having to drive all over the place on random days and times. They all have their pros/cons.
I saw a ‘neighborhood yard sale this Saturday’ all week during my drive home. I looked forward to going, but there were actually only about four to six sales in the large neighborhood. Bummer.
I would add "easy to ship" to the "easy to list" criteria. The example I use is pick a book, don't pick Grandma's soup tureen. You mentioned it, #1 reason I do not do auctions is I get less (auctions just don't get the excitement they used to), #2 is I was getting at least 10% deadbeat slow pay/no pay on auctions, #3 buyers want stuff now, not 7 days from now. So buy it now gets better interest, higher prices and immediate payment.
I stopped going to yard sales and estate sales long ago...because they are swarming with TOO many other shoppers. It seems like people having the yard sale are pricing at eBay "listed prices"...Some are pricing HIGHER than eBay SOLD comps...crazy!
"Do you think I'd look good in this?" Ha ha 😂🤣 I love your type of humor! And your format of sales mixed with questions. And, to answer your question, i think you might look a little bit like singer Michael McDonald if you put that vintage Nike windbreaker on! ☺️😆
I’m in the San Diego area of CA & a worthwhile garage sale is pretty rare. They’re just not loaded with good stuff usually for some reason. Mainly just old crap that’s not worth anything.I go to some of the thrift stores & flea markets & I have much more success there. I’ve only been to literally two successful garage sales during my 1 year of doing reselling lol. Your advice rocks, Justin!
Hey Justin! I have had a bit of an unfortunate series of events happen over the past few weeks. 3 things that I sold were returned because they were destroyed in shipping. Im still a smaller reseller and there were fairly expensive items $70-80. And they were heavy too so this whole thing put me in the negative a lot. I filed claims and am still waiting on a decision . It would suck if they didn’t side with me because i packed this stuff very well!!
I find most high sell-through items will sell without promoted listings even if there is a lot of supply. Also, if you are going to price at the low end of the range you probably shouldn't promote because you will show up at the top when people rank by lowest first. I think you probably should start every listing without promotion and if it is not getting views then lower the price until it does. Remember, lowering the price by 10% nets you more than promoting at 10% because you will be also paying lower final value fees. I am now only promoting as a last resort or if the item is desirable but not necessarily something someone would search for specifically, e.g. certain collectibles.
I did almost the exact situation Thomas mentions in January to start my reselling business. It was a good way to get sales early in your career. Sundays are the best day for auctions as the most action happens. Justin mentioned the two biggest flaws. 1.Buyers not paying is REALLY annoying. 2 You may get some less value. One thing I will add though is you can add Best offer and auction the same time. So say you can start the auction at $10 but if someone really want it they can pay your buy it now option for $20
I absolutely LOVE community sales. Yeah, there are more people there, but I much prefer driving to one neighborhood to find 20-30 sales to driving all over town to get to a handful of sales. I find so much good stuff right in the middle of all the people who don't know what I know! :)
Sold a guitar strap last year that absolutely sold off of the description. Went overseas and the buyer messaged me indicating that the information I listed in the description helped their decision making on the sale. $425 guitar strap, who'd've thunk it
I love a neighborhood yard sale event because I also score great stuff for my own family (not to mention plenty of baked goods and lemonade) while doing the resale grind. I definitely go in with less of a business mindset, which helps. I agree, rude reseller "pros" really turn me off, which is a big part of why I don't go to estate sales. The rear-view mirror held by eBay tape is hilarious!
Much more competition out there, I was in Goodwill a few months ago and I heard the eBay "cha-ching" alert and reached for my phone. At the same time four other people were looking at their phones to see if it was their sale! Lately I've liked going to my Goodwill bins after 6:00 because it really thins out and people go home for dinner/evening. The Goodwill staff keep putting out new bins until 8:00 here and there are a lot fewer people. Also, don't discount your experience, so many people are new and dont't always know the value of items. My best pick of 2023 was at an estate sale an hour before closing, found e gem microscope for 12 dollars that sold for $450, hundreds of people (including me) walked right past it. It was on a low shelf, out of sight.
I feel so inexperienced but it's clear many others are too, and are looking for any clue they can get. At a flea market I was looking at two items I actually did know something about, and noticed reactions from other hunters. One I was looking at very closely for damage, and it got someone's attention who waited to see if I would put it back down. And the other, there were two similar items that someone was on the fence about one of them. I immediately grabbed the other one and suddenly he decided to get the one he was unsure about, lol.
Thank you - you are one of the most insightful Ebaytubers out there. Thank you. Bin Stores, goodwill and garage sales intensity has gone up as economy softens. Everyone hear of unicorn ....
In promoting listing I think you miss the point that sometimes ebay advertise in non-search pages like in "these might also interest you" or "more similar items", so doesnt matter if 3 or 600 are listed. It could get more impression and hence more sells. It could also act as a tool to remind a potential buyer and thus he might finally click the buy button.
Thx for another great video, Justin. Funny though, or not, wife & I r in the Denver Metro CO area and find garage sales are rarely crowded. We only hit estate sales on the final day for the 50% off. We find they run from somewhat crowded to just so-so.
I'm with you. Neighborhood garage sales get so much attention, they're so crowded and half the time they're ultimately not worth it. I'll still go to some, but there's a couple big, nice, gated communities that I have sworn off. When certain neighborhoods have sales it seems like they get all the attention while I go elsewhere.
I listed an Ann Valentin optical frame for $130 three years ago. It has sold and been returned 14 times since. There's nothing wrong with it, its a funky style that everyone loves but it just doesn't look good on most people. It just sold again and shipped out so fingers crossed someone finally keeps it!
Yes it was very slow on EBay last week. I thought it was just me. Love you videos. Just returned to Ebay after a 10 year hiatus. Got into Ebay during the crash of 2008. went at it hard for four years. Boy is it so much different now, 90% of the items I searched and sold back then have no value now. Second biggest difference is You Tube videos. There are so many people doing what your doing it helps so much with research. Back then we just started to work with the Ebay App. No real good smart phones. And you had zero signal in a store. Thanks keep making me look smart.
I love neighborhood garage sales. Saves a lot of time by having them all in one area instead of driving from town to town for just a handful of them. Great way to get loads of new inventory in a short amount of time.
The Masters is a golf tournament rather than a brand. BUT, they only sell Masters merch at the Masters tournament (which, by coincidence, is happening this week! Lol) so it often sells well.
The Masters golf tournament is very unique in that they don’t really try to maximize profit. They don’t have advertising, they limit TV commercials, concession prices are hilariously low. And I guess based on the above content they only sell merch on site.
My neighborhood tag sales always consists of two people: Do you have any jewelry, people? and Do you have any records, people? So I gave up looking for jewelry unless I'm the first one there. I rolled out of bed last week to be there at 8 am, luckily across the street, only to have crappy, cheap jewelry among the offerings. And some people will sell stuff that should have been tossed in the garbage and sometimes we get lucky and people will put out some good stuff for free. I much prefer online auctions.
How do you clean your white background? I made the same setup as you and find i have issues having to clean it between photo’s because of scuffs showing. Do you run into this problem a lot??
Hey Justin. Fellow reseller here. I chuckled at your example of doomed inventory, and an item that has been returned multiple times. I hate returns. I go to great lengths to provide so much information in my listing and so many photographs. I feel like returns end up being the death of my eBay seller status. Twice now in the 2 1/2 year period that I have been selling on eBay, I noticed a sharp decline in sales in a very abrupt way. Only to finally get an email sometime weeks down the road from eBay letting me know that I am now back up to the seller performance standard to get traffic to my store. I hadn’t realized my status of even changed. How do they communicate those kind of things to us? So Justin, I’m newer to your channel, but have you produced an episode on how to maintain seller status with eBay to protect the level of sales and reach that you can have with an eBay for your business? I find it extremely disruptive, and disturbing that my business can perform at such a great level consistently for a long period of time, and then eBay will abruptly Throttle my traffic and kill my sales. So again, this really doesn’t have anything to do with how my sales are rated by buyers of my products. This is how eBay views me as a seller. And I’m not sure if this is a combination of number of returns, etc.
I like big neighborhood garage sales because I know a lot of fellow resellers are there. I leave it alone and hit other sales where the crowds aren't. Kinda diverting the competition.
Oh my gosh if you are talking about the Oakville subdivision sale in England town or whatever - I drove through it and immediately drove out. I swore off neighborhood garage sales too right then lol.
When there is a neighborhood sale, I go to other sales in town first hoping everyone is at the neighborhood sale. But I have found some really good deals at neighborhood sales because people that don’t normally sell things are just looking to get rid of stuff.
Got a scenario I’d love your opinion on. I’m new to this and one of the earliest things I sold was a fridge water filter that I bought for $1. I realized I could sell them about $11 each or a 2 pack for $20 based on comps with free ship, so I realized it wasn’t ideal but I just wanted to get them out the door and chalk it up to a learning experience. Sold one and netted $3 (don’t judge me too hard), then two orders a few days apart for Puerto Rico! That never factored into things for me, especially that I would have TWO different Puerto Ricans buying my filter. Due to fees being $4 more to ship to PR than most states, I lost $1 on each sale. Obviously I still need to learn a lot, but specifically does this happen to you often where you sell to PR and is it just something you eat into your profits, since it is likely not totally covered in the ship fees you quote the buyer?
Only negative part of selling on ebay is returns. I have item im sure will return because they asked to cancel the order an hour after paying because the shipping was to high. I explained to them that i already dropped it off at the usps and offered a partail refund to help with the sgipping. Although they agreed im sure they will return it and say it was not as described.
Yesterday i found a vintage cookie mould for free on a table on the side of the road. I didint even know what it was i thought it was a fancy coaster. Lensed it, listed it and it sold for 25 bucks within 2 hours! Watch out for these small brown moulds.
Boy, in my neck of the woods it's not like you described at all! Folks are nice and helpful and there's very little cutthroat stuff. I guess you have to live in the rural South to experience it! 🙂
Neighborhood garage sales I have been to often have insanely high prices. Why? Because they have had a meeting in which somebody has suggested going out and finding the highest listed (not sold) price on eBay and then telling everybody to stick to it. How do I know this? Because when I ask if they are willing to take a lower price, at every house they all say the same thing; "That's what it is going for on eBay." And nothing you can say can convince them to take a lower price. The more houses the more likely somebody has suggested that. Two to three houses seem to be the limit. After that the odds go up dramatically that that's what you are going to run into around here. If the first house says that, I don't bother going to any of the others because you can buy the same items brand new in a store for less.
I write descriptions but when it's something that needs to be read, I'll put "Read Description" in the title. An example is when I sell PS4 games that are new and sealed. I take great care in my packaging however PS4 games are notorious for game discs slipping out from their housing and just rattling around in the case. Itsva Sony defect with the clip that holds the disc. If it's open, it's easy to make the CD stay still, but new and sealed is the opposite, so I let people know in Description. There's other examples but that's one of them. You are 100% correct tho, people don't read the descriptions. I find it funny cuz I definitely read when I make purchases lol. I want to know about the item I'm buying.
I actually have doomed sourcing resources. Everytime I buy from a specific person I have frequent returns from their lots. I don't do well buying from resellers in general. Everything is chipped, cracked, or broken. If I sell something with condition pictured and described then I still get returns.
I do auction when I'm not sure of the price and it's a rare item. You should find the market price that way and not under price or over price your item. With items that you know the value and STR, buy-it-now is the way to go.
If you have savvy buyers, promoted listings don't matter and the only thing that matters is having the lowest price for quality. Personally, I lock my own buyer search settings to show lowest price so I never even see promoted listings.
I'm not a reseller!! I'm from a town of about 3800. I don't go to any yard or estate sales, thrift stores, consignment shops anymore. All I want is things I need either for myself or for family and the nursing home residents but there are so very many resellers now that I can't get a decent toy, book, kids/ adult clothing, bedding, baby items. I have nothing against reseller but .... I'm a small fish on disability who faithfully works 2 days a week and rely on cheaper item that are gotten by the places listed above
Hey there! Hope your weekend is going well. Just curious, I offer returns on eBay and it’s giving me an option if i’d like to refund for original postage, they’re returning a pair of shoes that didn’t fit them. Should I fully refund for product and original shipping?
I watched all of your videos I can find, best out there. Shipping is my bane; I live in Massachusetts so shipping to the west coast or Florida is always the most expensive, so I predominately use calculated shipping and I think this can turn buyers off. I will probably add a note in the description about the shipping costs. Whay do you think? Its difficult to use free shipping, I seem to always get burnt. Thanks
I don't like neighborhood sales either, they are just as hit and miss as stand alone garage sales. I rarely go to "new" subdivisions, it's 99% baby stuff. Same with estate sales. I've waited for hours and not gotten what I was after, and I went on the last day/hour and got great items for great prices. You just never know. I think Dallas Tx is the capitol of estate sales - there are maybe 20 -30 estate sales every week during the season- and they are almost all crowded :(
I know this will vary for every person, but as a general rule when ($$-wise) do you think it's best to turn your eBay selling into a business for tax purposes as opposed to extra personal income?
I currently have a north face rain jacket that has been returned twice now. Due to it nothing fitting even though I have every measurement possible listed.
Some t-shirts have disproportionally narrow shoulders or very tight sleeves. If you ask/push your buyers to check those measurements, could be no returns after purchase. Good luck!
Hey Justin, regarding that return shirt, have you considered asking the buyer as to why? It may be as simple as that. But nevertheless, good luck on your Guinness Record 😊
Only have been to a few garage sales and never really liked them. I dont see why id drive around constantly when i can just use fb marketplace or buy in bigger quantities. Plus i cant really look things up at a garage sale
Do you sell exclusively on ebay or do you cross post to like Poshmark and Mercari, etc...? I know you've mentioned FB Marketplace but do you use others or is ebay your primary?
I have seen very slow sales the last couple weeks. It is interesting to see when eBay vloggers mention slow sales I am hitting slow sales at that same time period
When looking something up with bar code you might not see any items. When it does not come up you should type in the what your searching for. Just because it does not come up by scanning the bar code it just means no one has it listed with bar code scanned.
Justin, I'm having a hard time understanding your net return. Is there any other fee included that does not appear on the scream? For example the Nike Lunarglide: $29.99 - $0.40 - $3.33 - $0.60 - $8.52 = $17.14, not the $15.14 shown on screen. There's probably another fee, I just don't know which one. Love your videos! Thanks
I went to a neighborhood garage sale last Saturday and was frustrated to arrive at each sale just as another buyer was paying for a gold mine worth of valuable stuff. Not fun!
I hate neighborhood garage sales because it is a license for everyone to 10 garbage items out on their driveway. The quantity and quality of items is terrible. I won't waste my time anymore. I also hate bad garage sale signage which wastes my time driving around. All you need is a big arrow and the word SALE written on it. An address written in small print and no arrow is useless as I drive by.
I can't stand being at a sale where people are grabbing things from around you and in front of your face. I did a karate block on a lady who was trying to grab something right in front of my face...i said "Not today lady, not today" She couldn't believe it and I couldn't either.
How's that label printer that you have on your description? That label printer is expensive. More money than I'd like to pay for a printer. I was hoping it'd be within the 100 to 200 dollar range. But hey if it can make the shipping and handling process quicker & easy and with little to no hassle I'd buy it. You understand, especially when you have a large quantity of items, you want to ship things fast and with minimal hassle.
@@justinresells great! Thanks I'll have to get it. One more thing, any temporary seasonal items or high demand items that you recommend? I wouldn't ask you this question just a few months ago because normally high demand items have high competition but I'm not really worried about that. In fact it's okay if the profits are low, as long as it's 10 dollars or more profit. Thought about maybe sporting goods and fitness items, car parts and some health and beauty stuff. Some fat burning vest for women or some men's hair growth products any good? Those little rolling things with needles that men use on their heads to grow hair look like hot items to sell. 🔥 any of the mentioned products good?
I had a jacket like your Ferrari shirt. I realized it was a BOYS medium not a men's medium. So I listed it as a men's and they didn't fit into it. It still looked big enough to trick me.
When you decide to promote items in saturated categories do you have a set percentage? Your base is 2%. What percentage would you use to move items up higher, and do you tack this percentage to your sale price? I don't use emojis I prefer to have more room for title descriptions. I too accept returns and then relist the item. If it comes back a second time it goes in the death pile. I then attempt to figure where the issue is. Most times the item is good but didn't work in the buyer's application, such as audio HiFi or pre-amp or guitar amp. I send offers out at 10%, what percentage would you use? Does it depend on the item? I used to use "Make Offer" in my listings but have found over the past year, very few buyers send offers now. Thanks for the weekly videos. Your channel has great content. JNS Vintage Radio and Tubes.
I hate them too although I find if there is other garage sales in the area I find neighborhood sales are good to draw away resellers to the individual sales in the area. People act desperate for items at neighborhood sales and its gross.
I’m with u…I’m not fighting the masses to source…as long as I know more than others and continue studying markets, I can always find items. “What’s meant for me, finds me!”
Exactly. I actually look for kinda off the beaten path stuff anyway. Stuff people arent salivating over
Don't ever change Justin. Best on yt. 100%

I absolutely loved this video! I detest crowded craziness. Why i dont go to the goodwill bins! Kudos to you!! Super interesting!
crazy neighborhood garage sales and estate sales are my thing. I go early and often. This is how I source my best items.

OMG…the EBay tape scenario is hysterical! I was not expecting you to say that, and with a straight face…thanks for the good laugh!!😂

Agreed!
Where do you purchase boxes, bubble wrap, packing papers, etc? I've been getting mine from Amazon, but every where I've looked so far is expensive.
I almost had a panic attack yesterday at a first day of an estate sale. I knew better 😂

The grocery store on a weekend gives me that same feeling , honestly anywhere on a weekend is a bit overwhelming
Hey Justin, great vid again mate. The Boomerang Shirt.... you could write a kids book on that 😂.
I dont do crowd craziness either, not my vibe 🤙
“I don’t know golf, y’all” 😂🤣
I'm with you.
Another great informative video, thank YOU! Could you share how you do your graphs on your videos? Thank you for your time to helping others.

I went to the Goodwill Outlet ONCE. It was absolutely crazy how people were acting. But I did find a Bible from 1836, which was a unique find.
Lol) so it often sells well.
right, okay, that makes sense. I knew it was some sort of event but didn't want to sound dumb pretending to know when I didn't. thank you!
Yeah it is a little rough assuming you're using the matte finish side. But it cleans well enough for me using ISO alcohol and a wet sponge.
Toe Jam and Earl 😂 BEST game ever!!!
Oh my gosh if you are talking about the Oakville subdivision sale in England town or whatever - I drove through it and immediately drove out. I swore off neighborhood garage sales too right then lol.
yep, that's the one!
When there is a neighborhood sale, I go to other sales in town first hoping everyone is at the neighborhood sale. But I have found some really good deals at neighborhood sales because people that don’t normally sell things are just looking to get rid of stuff.
You can always just choose not to go lol!
And I do have more inventory than I'd like that seems to be difficult to sell.
Garage sales, church sales, school fete white elephant stall...they've reached over the tipping point into becoming a competitive contact sport.
I also only re-use emojis when I sell similar and the previous seller had them! I feel the same way, keep them. Why not? I found that funny.
Justin that was a very good video great contents as always thank you for what you do for the reseller community?
Garage sales near me are ok not too busy , but the flea market it’s a nightmare lol
Good luck!
Is flipwise going to be available soon??
it’s available now! flipwise.app
Hey Justin, regarding that return shirt, have you considered asking the buyer as to why? It may be as simple as that. But nevertheless, good luck on your Guinness Record 😊
their return reason is "doesn't fit"
Great vid Justine!!! Thank you.
Do you have a target number for COG when sourcing?
Only have been to a few garage sales and never really liked them. I dont see why id drive around constantly when i can just use fb marketplace or buy in bigger quantities. Plus i cant really look things up at a garage sale
Do you sell exclusively on ebay or do you cross post to like Poshmark and Mercari, etc...? I know you've mentioned FB Marketplace but do you use others or is ebay your primary?
YES, my doomed inventory gets thrown away after 6 months. What’s the point?
This topic speaks to my soul.
Sorry if I missed it but how many items do you list a day?
He has said 5 - 35 a week in other clips.
I have seen very slow sales the last couple weeks. It is interesting to see when eBay vloggers mention slow sales I am hitting slow sales at that same time period
When looking something up with bar code you might not see any items. When it does not come up you should type in the what your searching for. Just because it does not come up by scanning the bar code it just means no one has it listed with bar code scanned.
this is a good tip! thanks for sharing
Thanks
cost of goods is $2
Very hit of miss for those neighborhood sales. Better to bundle it in another route to make the trip worth it.
I went to a neighborhood garage sale last Saturday and was frustrated to arrive at each sale just as another buyer was paying for a gold mine worth of valuable stuff. Not fun!
i source from storage units and I use descriptions to post things like defects or caveats.
Why is it that on the bottom of the sold items page it’ll say 0 results but then it shows the sold comps?
Descriptions cover your butt. If there is no description I find I get item not as described returns
That inter Milan jersey is so cool and inter is doing really strong this season in serie A
interesting, could be why it sold now
@@justinresells fun fact, inter Milan (soccer jersey you sold) just won the league in Italy!
I feel the same way. I still convinced myself to go, however.
Thanks for answering my question!
Are you kidding me, they taped their mirror with ebay tape, thats hilarious
I can't stand being at a sale where people are grabbing things from around you and in front of your face. I did a karate block on a lady who was trying to grab something right in front of my face...i said "Not today lady, not today" She couldn't believe it and I couldn't either.
I hate them as well. Although did well today at a packed one day Church Sale!
How's that label printer that you have on your description? That label printer is expensive. More money than I'd like to pay for a printer. I was hoping it'd be within the 100 to 200 dollar range. But hey if it can make the shipping and handling process quicker & easy and with little to no hassle I'd buy it. You understand, especially when you have a large quantity of items, you want to ship things fast and with minimal hassle.
it’s great! but you can find it cheaper elsewhere. not sure why Amazon prices it high sometimes
It still looked big enough to trick me.
this could be the issue. i'll have to check if/when i get it back
I can't believe you just challenged your viewers to buy and return that shirt. 😂
Video games have a very high sell though rate and I don't promote them on ebay.
1st here! Any updates to the reselling program, excited for it!
yes! it is now open to the public: flipwise.app
I always use 2%, and usually send out 10% offers, sometimes more depending on the item and how long I have had it and what my margins are on it.
@@justinresells I do the same. Thanks for confirming.
I hate them too although I find if there is other garage sales in the area I find neighborhood sales are good to draw away resellers to the individual sales in the area. People act desperate for items at neighborhood sales and its gross.
returns on a size small>? no wonder, that's a size i stay far away from.
