      Quick question/your thoughts please Justin... I have an eBay store, and have registered as self-employed with the authorities for tax etc.
      Should I/do I have to, register as a business seller on eBay? What are the advantages/disadvantages?
      Cheers
      Eddie

    I find it ironic that someone would say something about resellers in a thrift store, considering thrift stores are also resellers, who usually get their inventory for FREE.

      Would I say something? no. is it kind of a bummer? yeah. so many thrift stores are supposed to be a resource for lower income people/families. If you were someone who NEEDED that cheaper alternative, I think it'd be a bit of a bummer to be competing with people who are just trying to find items to resell at a price you can't afford. That said I have also flipped items from a thrift store

    I've yet to be shamed in a thrift store for reselling, but if it happens I know what I'm going to say, telling them the truth which will probably make them uncomfortable, as they should be and should mind their own business. I'm a childhood cancer survivor which kept me from getting a higher education and left me with disabilities that make keeping a job extremely difficult. Reselling gives me the freedom to rest when I need to, work whenever I'm able, and it makes me happy where I feel I make some kind of a difference. I'm not where I'd like to be in it by any means, but I'm happy I've found it. You never know why someone may be reselling or how much they may need to either for financial or personal reasons, and I find those that judge also do not understand all the good that resellers do too. I discovered recently my Goodwill destroys items they've overpriced/don't sell after a couple of weeks, I can't imagine how much this one location throws away every week of things that are perfectly good and wanted items. I like to think that I help just a little with my purchases.

    • @tracy85777
      @tracy85777 2 місяці тому +3

      They do WHAT?! That's despicable! There's plenty of other places that poor folks go to get things they need and IMHO they should take them there. I get so mad at Goodwill. Last week the jeans went up ANOTHER dollar over the weekend. Some of us can't afford it. And when I go I'm going for a better quality of clothing or pots or whatever than I can get cheaper at Walmart or similar stores. Things are just crazy out there.

    • @DesertRainflower
      @DesertRainflower 2 місяці тому

      @@tracy85777 Mine definitely does, I don't know about other locations within my state or around the country, but an employee of the one I go to told me as he brought out a big cart of toys when the shelves were already pretty full of stuff, that he wasn't supposed to say anything, everything that's been around for 2-3 weeks will get thrown into their dumpster that has a compactor to prevent people from dumpster diving for them instead of lowering prices or giving them to people who really need them. He was very upset and said he lost a lot of respect for Goodwill, after that I did too. I always assumed when suddenly a lot of things I kept seeing around were gone that they must've sent it all to the Bins. Since I learned otherwise, I can't help but see things that have been around awhile, knowing the only reason they haven't been grabbed yet is because they're asking for too much, will likely end up thrown out and be torn up/broken. I've been upset with Goodwill for the same reason as you among others, so many price hikes on items recently, hats, jeans, shoes, etc. $1 increase on all women's jeans, $2-8 increase on hats, no joke I've seen multiple pairs of shoes both men's and women's priced $35 and they're no name brands with a new tag on them or in very bad condition and name brand. These things end up piling up and racks get packed.
      I actually look up stuff I'm interested in for myself or family now as well to make sure Goodwill isn't asking more for it than eBay does, unfortunately sometimes they do or it's in worse condition than one on eBay at the same price. eBay also gives you your money back if there are problems, Goodwill just gives credit.
      Justin was right when he previously said we provide a service to people by thrifting and putting our stuff out there, there's a lot of frustrating aspects to thrifting that customers on eBay don't have to go through to get the items they buy.

  • @EthanLupo

    I've been reseller shamed online a few times, here's how I go about explaining things: The person in question will say we are "stealing from the poor" because thrifts are meant for the poor, and us buying things to flip causes the thrifts to raise prices, further harming poor people. This isn't true because most thrift stores don't exist for the purpose of supplying the needy with cheap items, they exist to raise money for a cause. Goodwill uses proceeds to fund their job training programs, Savers is straight up for-profit. As far as the big chain stores go, no one is more entitled to their inventory than another so don't feel bad. There are a few small thrifts in my area that do exist primarily for the purpose of providing people with very cheap clothing (i'm talking $1 per item or $3 per bag of clothing), I avoid those stores since I don't fit their mission, I do think we should avoid places like that personally unless we are shopping for ourselves or are in real financial need.

      Exactly and if the homeless or poor needs clothing there are churches giving them for free in almost every town, city or whereever it is..Most homeless ppl don't have the money to pay thrift store prices at the rate it's increasing. There are organizations who are glad to help the poor.

    • @alisonwhou
      @alisonwhou 2 місяці тому +1

      Well said! Also, I have worked for non-profits and can tell you that people in need of clothing, food, etc. are getting it from social programs funded by taxpayer money at the county, state, and federal level. And then they are directed to shop at thrift stores. I always tell people in need to call their town for assistance finding social programs, food banks, and to look for charities that handle government assistance and also fundraise. Because there are people that don't qualify for all government assistance but these charities can offer help from the donations they receive for those people that are right on the edge of qualifying but obviously need some help due to circumstances, string of bad luck, national disasters, etc.

    • @la6136
      @la6136 2 місяці тому

      I would tell those people, maybe you wouldn't be so poor if you stopped complaining and became a reseller too 😂Them being poor is not resellers problem. It is their own fault. They are projecting their anger about their own financial situation onto resellers. Sorry those people are losers they have a loser mentality.

      @@alisonwhouYep, when I worked in nonprofits our clothes, food, furniture, appliances et al, were all donated to our organization specifically and the people were so grateful for their donations. We also received funding for services provided. As a divorced mother of four I did utilize our thrift stores a lot (which is what began my sourcing journey) but I never begrudged others for shopping there as well. I never questioned their motives. Now I source for my business as well as for my now grown family and grandbabies, but again, I never question the motives of others while our sourcing. Though I will say, The Goodwill Outlets (bins) have become quite the competitive sport. 😂

    I've gotten shamed at a thrift store by the staff in it 😅😂
    I felt bad for a few minutes until I realised why I shouldn't:
    We are in the service business.
    We make people's lives easier and better by investing our time to find the one thing they are after and that because of geographical constraints or time they cannot procure themselves.
    We make it even easier by posting it to the place of their choosing.
    We assume all the risk. Paying money of our own for an item that may not work, may not sell, may not be what we initially thought. We store it in our own facilities for people that don't even know that this item is what they want.
    We add value to our communities, supporting charities that are in need of trading goods for the money the ask for, so they can help the people that create their mission.
    We keep unwanted items out of landfill and help recycle things that otherwise would add to many issues that most people care about.
    If someone is shaming you for doing what you need to do to provide for your family, loved ones, yourself or to serve others, just remember that is probably out of ignorance and ill informed prejudices against capitalism and what true collaboration is.

    I've never had issues at Goodwill, Salvation Army or any other similar outlet. Their business models aren't specifically based on the homeless coming in to shop, but rather to sell donated items to the general public to generate proceeds, which are then used to fund various programs, services and training to help those in need. Imagine how much their ability to fund these programs would fall off if we all stopped sourcing at these places.

    Also, regarding the subject in the title: Goodwill uses some of their proceeds to help people get job skills and employment, so when you are shopping there you are in fact helping. If the items go unsold, they end up in a landfill and that helps no one. I've never been shamed for shopping in a store, its intended purpose. But I could see that happening to someone if they were looking up a bunch of items on their phone and blocking an aisle, perhaps.

    Another warning about promoted listings numbers/percentages changing, if you edit/revise your listing, make sure eBay does not change your percentage number. Whenever I edit a listing it always removes my number and changes it to ebay's recommended amount and I have to manually go into the field and put my number back in before I save it.

      It's so annoying with the promoted percentage changing. I pay close attention when I list my items before I submit and when I revise, but somehow, it still changes on some of my listings. I have to go to my store listings every day now to make sure it stays at the percentage I want, and sure enough I still need to change some back. I was really surprised by some of the fees I got before I realized what was happening. I bet many sellers don't look closely at their numbers, and the promoted percentage that eBay changes without them knowing is putting them out of business. That's a shame.

I think the reason for this is because I listen to and follow the advice of UA-camrs that I can trust (like yourself) and I am Top Rated, I promote, accept returns, do mostly free shipping, and take great photos. It's funny, a lot of thrift stores HATE resellers. But without resellers, a lot of their stuff would end up in the garbage. Resellers help extend a thrift store's market beyond the local area. They should be THANKED by thrift store staff in particular. Thrift stores are in the business of raising money for their cause. Without people buying their stuff, they won't raise money! And a lot of resellers are the BIGGEST buyers at these thrift stores. If thrift stores wanted to sell their items on ebay and other outlets, then they should do it. Otherwise, thank that reseller for buying their stuff. On box appearance, I get compliments all the time on how well I pack items. All of my boxes are recycled, and many are cut down to save on postage. So appearance wise, they don't look great. Functionally, they are great.

    I rarely tell anyone I resell (except my inner circle) because 1) shade and 2) then they want me to resell FOR them. I"m always polite in thrift stores and at the bins, so I doubt I'd catch any shade there. Those groups are specifically created to be a gift culture and NOT for reselling... but several folks in my group are notorious for "me-firsting" every freebie post in order to source for their garage sales. I try not to judge, everybody's gotta eat, but that just seems like one step beyond...

    The only shame at a thrift store I've heard about is talking to a local Church one and they said they had to raise prices because of the resellers. But it wasn't really "shame" or anger, just more of a "we had to do this to keep certain things in stock." Their prices still aren't bad though, and still better than Goodwill.

    Just found your channel! Very real and to the point! I live near 3 military facilities with thrift shops and love buying from them. We are retired military family and as we get stationed around the world you find amazing things to resell. Those kilts sell really fast and for good money. I found a Disney sweater from a closed Tiki Bar for $2 and sold for $200. Thank you for all your information. Keep on reselling!

    Love these videos!
    Here's my shaming experience:
    This week a buyer sent me a lowball offer on a shirt ($10 on a $28 listing), I countered with a reasonable offer (like $23 or something) and would have taken a lower offer but he countered with $11 and called me a "scumbag reseller" that "bought all the yellow tags at Walmart so he couldn't get any" -- which is ridiculous, it's not like he lives in my neighborhood and shops at my walmart and he missed out, nor did I buy ALL of the yellow tags. (I bought 6 clearance shirts for $3 each, leaving literally dozens on the racks lol). He said I should sell it to him cheap with free shipping because nobody else will EVER buy this shirt. 😅 I just blocked and moved on. It's wild that not getting an Adventure Time shirt on ebay for the price he wanted made him feel validated in name calling and trying to ruin my night. 🤣 I cross post and the shirt has many likes on other platforms, I'm not worried about it selling. And again if he'd been nice I would have gone lower than my counteroffer, but I won't be bullied over some nonsense like that.

    Yes, a couple time- once by employee at a small thrift store who saw me doing google searches on my phone. She said, “people who do that are usually resellers” I said yes I sell some stuff at times to help pay for all the stuff I keep. And as I shopped she continuously asked, me “ do you need help” roughly about 7 times. I end up buying something for $1 then left.
    Another smaller thrift store I started going to once a week started being extremely rude to me. Not saying hi when I came in. The last time I went they walked out in front of me cutting me off with their cart. Also Reached in front of me to hang something on a clothing rack I looking through. Obviously I’m not going back there either.
    I often wonder if they do it more because I’m a woman?
    And what makes it interesting to me is they are making $$$ off free donations - but heaven for bid if you make a couple dollars off something you paid for. And you’re paying them the asking price that goes to help fund their schools, seniors. Ect.. .There are too many other place to shop that are glad to take our money.
    I don’t have this problem at bigger stores like, salvation Army and Goodwill. They are always glad to see me and take my money.

    So many good questions today! Something else to think about when doing local pickups is the buyer might look at it and change their mind. On one hand, that's good, because you don't have return shipping hassles. But a buyer online usually has asked all of their questions, looked at what's available, and really thought about their decision to buy.

    I reuse all packaging that I can--I even cut up used padded mailers that I can't use to send another item in for whatever reason, and then use that material for bubble wrap.
    I cut out all identifying information and reuse white mailing bags for packing inside of shoes, and when I run out of those I use plastic grocery bags. Then I put each shoe in its own grocery bag and tie it off, and then put the pair in a bag together after I list them to keep dust off and any scuffs from other shoes until I pack them in a box when sold.
    I sometimes use my eBay shipping coupon to buy their "Reused packaging" labels for reused padded mailers and boxes.
    As a buyer, I don't care what kind of box it's in as long as it's packed well and securely to prevent damage or loss in shipment. Sadly Amazon FBA warehouse packers are not as conscientious. I've received boxes from Amazon that were almost falling open they were so poorly taped. That's one of the many reasons I stopped selling on Amazon FBA--I was sick and tired of getting complains from buyers that items were not packed well, even if I sent them TO FBA packed well. Somebody would buy it and return it, and Amazon's FBA people would then poorly pack it if at all. It doesn't matter that Amazon SOMETIMES takes responsibility for a bad feedback--the damage is already done.

    I mostly shop auctions. Us resellers get to know each other and everyone is friendly and supportive. I’ve had several people invite me to their yard sales, one nice couple gave me the Wi-Fi password so I could look things up better at the yard sale. Home owners are usually happy I’m buying so much stuff (usually a truck load) and running some other bids up. One home owner cleared a path for me in a crowded room so I could see what was selling because she said I was a good buyer. I love the atmosphere and I’ve never been met with hostility.

    Hi Justin - Great videos. I'm curious...dp you think the new thrift store practice of pricing most inventory way up (in response ro reselling) will end up back firing on them? We are seeing Goodwills and Savers with increasingly overflowing shelves and donation areas. Stuff isn't selling at the higher prices and donation areas are backlogged from what must be a policy of looking up everything on eBay before pricing it. Frankly, they look like giant hoards. Wouldn't the better business model be to shoot for volume sales (especially since their inventory is sourced for free?)

    Justin, Hi. Really like Flipwise, enjoy your channel much. Question: You recently noted that there was a bug in the field where you set listing ad rate that partially obscured just what number you were entering. This seems to have been fixed, but not before it really messed up one of my listings. It turned a camera that I had otherwise made a tidy profit on into a net loss by way of leading me to set a 92% ad rate rather than the intended 2% (which I would not have known without Flipwise :-) Is there any chance I could recoup this loss from eBay by asking nicely or...?

    Ive never been "shamed" but I don't go around offering up the information either. Sometimes when im looking up comps someone might ask me if I resell and I always respond truthfully saying something like, yeah, I'm new at it and still learning, ejich is true. It gives me the opportunity to ask questions about an item, but i e also had people raise the price of an item if they see me looking an item up. A lot of thift stores & especially yard sales etc. don't put prices on things (at least here in central Florida) which can be a blessing or s curse. Sometimes they'll adk me or ill ask them what they plan to do with their remaining items ( if theres money left behind and if they say theyre donating the left stuff) I might offer to come back and buy the lot or help them find a place for the leftovers. I know how much it stinks to deal with unsold stuff after a sale. Especially at estate sales. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but ive made quite a few connections with people who have worthwhile items that are just going to go to Goodwill. I'm still only 6 months into it but si far most everyone is extremely friendly and willing to get rid of stuff. The thrift stores i usually hit (and there are a lot in my county) sre only too happy to make bundle deals. 😊

    Another point on local pickup is that the buyer has to show up. Even if they do show up, there is nothing preventing them from showing up late. How long are you going to wait, because they can always claim that they were there and you weren't when they eventually decided to get around to showing up. You get dings on your account and you are out the time and you have nothing to show for it.

    Another Excellent Video! I love these “Listing” videos as they have helped me tremendously in cutting down on unnecessary steps that apparently have little benefit and waste my time. Points taken from this video: 1. No need to include the item you are listing in the first 5 words of the title, as I have been told is necessary for Search function to work. Our English language often uses many descriptive adjectives before the actual noun in our way of speaking which puts the actual item name as perhaps the 7th or more word in the title. I see that you don’t pay attention to that at all. 2. You didn’t mention if you had washed the “Used” Kilt before listing it but I’ve read that Ebay requires all “used clothing” to be washed or cleaned prior to reselling. Maybe that rule is not enforced. 3. Taking as few as 3 photos of an item is apparently not a deterrent to ebay placing your listing at or near the top or at least on the first page of search results. Again, I’ve always heard that ebay favors listings with more photos and our listings should contain at least photos of all sides of an item. But taking all of those photos take extra time! I guess you can’t believe everything you read or hear about because you have successful monthly results and the Proof is in the Pudding! Please consider making Shipping and Packing videos as well. Particularly helpful would be packing larger or unusual size items, ie Golf Clubs or fragile items like a Ceramic Cookie Jar or Beverage Glasses, Vases etc. Thanks!

    Hey Justin, really enjoy your channel and appreciate all the information. I've been reselling on Ebay for several years now, and over the years have incurred a couple VERO strikes. Once for a set of fitness videos, and once for cosmetics. Have you incurred any VERO hits, and how do you go about avoiding inventory on that list? Generally speaking, how many VERO hits will lead to Ebay closing your store? I have 2 now, and I'm always fearful a 3rd mistake will kill my store. That may be silly, but I cannot find any metrics on the number of hits it takes for Ebay to take formal action.

    My recommendation is to just keep your gloating to yourself and ourchase and leave
    Resellers also love to whine about pricing as if they are owed discounts.

    I haven’t been “scolded” by anyone for being a reseller at a thrift store yet, but have had some awkward conversations at yard sales or FBM buys when sellers ask about what we are going to do with their items / collection. I think that mostly has to do with peoples emotional connection with their collections. The bottom line is that people sell things at yard sales or on Facebook because they do not want to go through the trouble of selling online.

  • @brad9189
    @brad9189 2 місяці тому +1

    I think resellers at thrift stores tend to select higher-end, brand-name items, at least when it comes to clothing. Lower income folks who shop at thrift stores, I think, are simply looking for inexpensive, nice items in good condition, for themselves and their family, and they probably aren't going to be too upset when they have to settle for Wrangler jeans instead of a pair of Rock Revivals.
