Seeing that Shea Moisture changed the formula since our last purchase about a year ago, the product we reviewed in our previous video of this leave -in (linked own below) may have confused those of you who have the new formula. Hello Sunshines.....M.A.D. CURLS here! Some of you guys seem to be unaware if you have the new or the older formula. Our suggestion to you is simply check the writing on the lid of this product. The lids read completely different. We show both lids side by side in this video. If you have the old formula, we say lucky you, if not, we say no big deal because the results as you can see in this re-filming video are equally the same. We filmed this as a sort of a comparison. To be making this for. But yes, it definitely works on our hair as we demonstrated in both of our Shea Moisture videos. As I always say “eat the meat and throw away the bones” .....,in other words take away what you can from something and as you say #trash the rest! Again, everything isn’t designed for everyone. We couldn’t use what a Caucasian girl In Sweden or Denmark uses on their hair, it wouldn’t work for our texture and we are fine with that. Own your texture and find what works for you regardless of these companies promises. If Shea Moisture targeted 4’s and it doesn’t work for 4’s, find a company that fits your needs. They are not the only show in town like my grandmother used to say. 😂 Thank

I’ve noticed whenever they change formulas it’s to save money on ingredients and production. At first glance the new formula is cheaper to make based on the ingredients list. First two ingredients of Old formula (excluding water): Shea butter, coconut oil. First two ingredients of new formula (excluding water): castor oil, stearyl alcohol. Shea butter and coconut oil are still in the new formula just further down the list meaning there’s less of those ingredients in there. I always say whenever a company changes a formula (And the previous formula was a big success) it’s always to save money and increase profit on production. These are random numbers but say it costed 3 dollars a jar in wholesale ingredients to create the old formula (I have a feeling it’s less than that). After some time, their product developers found a way to make it for 2 dollars a jar. Basically same ingredients just different amounts. Minor differences in quality and performance on hair. “that’ll do” and boom!! save thousand of dollars lol because that $1 saved goes a long way with mass production. Oh yeah don’t forget consumer price stays the same or goes higher. Business is always about profit! Now, happy customers increase profits so happy customer is close second but always know that profit is number one in business lol. So if they can skate by with a cheaper made product with less positive but similar results on hair, they will. They changed curl enhancing smoothie formula to.
The original formula was my holy grail. I’ve actually mentioned it on several of my hair videos but the new formula didn’t work on my hair at all. Plus mine smelt like strong chemicals whereas the old formula smelt like play dough. I’m starting to get frustrated with Shea Moisture because I keep falling in love with their products and then they either change the formula or stop selling it :( aw well. I’m loving the As I Am line even though it is more expensive.
I hate the new one. I found 2 bottles of the old formula at a random drug store last week, way in the back. It was like striking gold lol

This is how much of a newbie I am. I didn't know there was a new formula.
It’s a huge jar so typically unless it’s your only go to product you’re not going to go through it fast. I feel as though that’s why ourselves as well as other people didn’t know they changed the formula. We are still working off of an old jar because it has so much product in it and a little goes a long way haha.
M.A.D.CURLS I still have the old jar yes. It's so moisturizing and it mixing well with other styling products.
For what it is worth, I really liked knowing the products you used to wash & condition before you come on campus because they can impact the styling product. Please consider sharing it in the future as well.

I️ recently rebought this because I️ used to use it a lot and loved it but after using it I️ was feeling that it was weird but I️ kind of thought it was just me being crazy but I️ didn’t realize there was an ingredient change which makes so much sense now

They never put silicone free on their bottles

This was a great review. I didn't realize there was a new formula, and was thinking it didn't smell like Play Doh. Bought the new formula now I smell it. I think you ladies should do a comparison of the old and new formula on one half of your hair.

I honestly thinks it works the same for my hair, but the smell is lighter and it is much thicker. It doesn't dry out my hair like it did for others I still love it.

There must have been a 3rd (interim) formula. My jar of JBCO leave-in (purchased maybe 10 or 11 months ago) doesn't match the ingredients on either jar you listed and seems to be a mix of both.
My jar says "Strengthen, Grow & Restore" on it, but the ingredients are:
Water (aqua), ricinus communis (castor) seed oil, stearyl alcohol, cetyl alcohol, behentrimonium chloride, butyrosperum parkii (shea) butter, cocos nucifera (coconut) oil, panthenol, dicaprylyl ether, hydroxyethylcellulose, glycerin (vegetable), simmondsia chinensis (jojoba) seed oil, adansonia digitata seed oil, hydrolyzed keratin, mauritia flexouosa fruit oil, tocopherol, aloe barbadensis, leaf juice, yeast extract, hydrolyzed vegetable protein pg-propyl silanetriol, menthe piperita (peppermint) leaf extract, fragrance (essential oil blend), hydrolyzed rice protein, butylene glycol, niacin, dextran, acetyl tetrapeptide-3, trifolium pretense (clover) flower extract, vinegar, caprylhydroxamic acid, caprylyl glycol, macadamia ternifolia seed oil
To add, my jar has the really loose consistency but very much smells like vanilla play-doh.

The new One dries my hair out like crazy. No Moisturie at all. I just did a video about the two because the ingredients are Very Different. Once your hair dries with the new One your hair is left Extremely dry
Nappy2Straight It seems everybody has been having a different experience with these products, both the old and new formula. We had to test them ourselves. We found, personally no major differences. It meant so much to us that we did this brand and these products back to back but everyone’s experience is different. No one is right and no one is wrong it’s just personal experience. I saw both of the reviews and here's my thing apple cider vinegar should not be in the leave in conditioner. I can understand the shampoo but not the conditioner. Thank you ladies all 3 for the videos. Will read the fine print of I decide to purchase this item again. I'm currently using the kinky curly hair line and I love their products, but I still use my Shea Moisture Jamaican black castor oil line sometimes. I will be informing my mom she uses this faithful. Golden Yonis SM indeed has a LOT of PR problems. However, if these products work for people you kinda have to separate their poor marketing strategies to what works for your hair. Every company has some sort of issue in one way or another. We can’t boycott everyone. I’m 50 years old. Trust me, the issues will be never ending in your lifetime. i always was wondering why they changed the name of the products on the jbco line, when i had first bought the deep conditioner from that line i was like why doesn’t mine say strengthen and grow. i knew something was different. now i officially know that it was because they actually have new ingredients in their products. thanks for the info on this and also i must say that the deep conditioner definitely smells like play dough as well.

The main reason is that they claimed that this line can grow hair whereas, that is a drug claim which could cause trouble for them with the FDA since they must present the drug fact, so they had to change their claim.

I'm so glad that ya create this video and inspire me to try it despite my fear that it might dry my hair. Well guess what, I think I did needed the protein anyway and my hair seem to love it. I love your 3 rules btw. I'll definitely watch more of ya video. Btw, I'm glad ya talk about the 360 Mist Spray bottle because for real I've been trying to see if there is a mist spray bottle in large size but only see it in small size for a long time. My hair just don't do well with spray that just splat on the hair and over time it sometimes hard for me to know if my hair have enough water despite that it feel wet. I think the mist help a lot since it form in a small bead like water which is more easier for my hair to absorb water, I suppose and easier to manage. Anyway, thanks again. You ladies are so thoughtful to get the new formula! I didn’t care for the old JBCO leave-in but loved the JBCO lotion. It gives moisture and hold and I used to use it as my one and done until I switched to the As I Am leave-in (original in the brown bottle). Have you tried TreLuxe? I’m curious about the line.
Selenah Njoloma Thank you. We really felt we owed it to our viewers because we received so many messages about the new formula. We never used the lotion though I did see it in Sally’s the other day. We weren’t really tempted to buy it yet because we have beaten this JBCO line to death for a while.......we think, who knows 😂😂😂. Now, As I Am, Yes, we love the original line. The new line we must admit was a “slow go” with us initially, when we were asked to test it out. But we have grown to love it. Their smoothie, however from this new line still doesn’t work for us. Andrea Mitchell Thank you for your suggestion, however we only have the new formula in the Coconut Hibiscus Line. We no longer have the older formula. This video just happened to be a fluke. We didn’t even realize there were 2 formulas when we recorded our first JBCO video. Our viewers started telling us there was 2 formulas. I just had to throw away my old formula one because it expired...I’m thinking the fact that it has an expiration date on the old packaging and not the new one might be why they changed the formula? I don’t know I’m just guessing 😃. I am having a M.A.D Curls binge day so you will see more of my comments on more of your videos lol. From the ingredient list, the new formula is more interesting. They took the peptide, BUT promoted Castor oil to second ingredient. However, since shea butter was downgraded it may be more difficult to detangle with it.

Interesting side note: if you buy Febreze , save the bottle, it’s the same spray bottle as their water bottle...
I have only used the new one and it’s not anything to write home about. I prefer the as I am leave in conditioner. Still love Shea moisture but not their leave in
They changed their entire brand when they solid it. I loved the shampoo to this. Was the best thing I’ve Eva washed my hair with. It detangled an left your hair moisturized clean and lite. The new one is full of sulfate and heavy thick consistency. The older version was thin consistency. They just made it Al about money. They use the cheapest way of making the product now. It’s Al about cutting cost and price inflation

That XgirlX oh really, do you have a Walgreens or a Rite Aid or a Target or Walmart. Check around the newer formula is lighter in color and the words on the top of the lid say “Strengthen and Restore” as opposed to “Grow” .
The beauty of Unilever or a bigger corporation buying a company is that they get to be more accountable else they get into trouble with either FDA or EU regulators.
Smaller brands often get away with these things because they are still upcoming

I don’t know if it’s just me but I CANNOT stand the smell of this product. It has turned me off so much I can’t bring myself to use it. Unfortunately, it’s a problem for me with a lot of Shea Moisture products. It lingers and even makes me nauseous.

I just brought this product today and came on UA-cam to see if it was a great product and watched your video and noticed my product looks like the old formula(color and all) but has the same smell as you described the new formula as well as same ingredients
Danisha Bessard Remember, it is a product that may be inconsistent in color or smell because if the “natural” ingredients. Try not to get too hung up on color or smell. Focus on the results. Do you like the results. We found both okd and new formulas worked for us. See what it does for you. Who knows what Shea Moisture is doing? Ok sooooo I bought the old one used it dry and loved it. Bought a second right after thought it seemed thicker but paid no attention to it omg now I feel lied to. I can’t find the old packaging completely but I found the lid now I know I’m done just fine with Shea moisture the should label it new formula but they didn’t I’m done sooo upset

Shea Moisture is a company that is all over the map in my opinion (LoriAnne) they just don’t know where to fit. But in any event, THIS particular product works for us.....both new and old formula. We made this video to clear up any confusion. I noticed this in my Walgreens today! There was one tub that was darker color and the rest were lighter color. I wish they'd let us know. I wonder if the shampoo and conditioner changed too. I hope not as I liked them when I used them about a year and a half ago and I just ordered them from Ulta a few days ago.
Kris House I feel the same way. I really wish they’d decide one way or another. I too keep finding the different productions on various shelves in different pharmacies. It is so frustrating. After we did the first video, then we came back and did the second video....but we still see other variations of this product. It’s crazy. Completely crazy. Oh well, the differences in performance are so minuscule, it’s pointless to keep going on about it at this point but they HAVE definitely changed the formula. No doubt about it. 😂😊➰💕➿

I know they changed an ingredient from water to deionized water. I don't know what difference that makes. I'm still confused on the difference all I know is that the old one says Grow and has keratin in it, and the new one doesn't. I was in love with the old one and bought the new one not knowing they changed the formula.

This leave in combined with the smoothie left my hair hair today, am I doing something wrong? I let it air dry.
I caved and bought this (new formula). I am nothing sort of enchanted with this product. To get its effect I had to mix my old leave in with an oil and apply a gel. This is just one and done for me. It is more watery and my fine 3A/3B curly hair loves it. It leaves my hair soft and shine without being oily.
You have to figure out how much to apply. For me the famous"dime size" works like a charm as I have a short curly A bob (chin length). It still works with gel as well.
Apple cider vinegar?? That's what I'd use if I were stripping the perm from my hair. In the 80's we'd use Apple Cider vinegar so that we could go back to pressing and curling our hair. Because the perm had damaged our hair. And we didn't want to have to cut it really short. I defiantly wouldn't be using that stuff in my hair everyday. Unless I wanted my hair to fall out. I didn't know anything about Shea Moisture until that commercial came out.
anneshirley duncan We certainly didn’t want to frighten you away from this product. It is a great product with many uses. The apple cider vinegar ingredient is in such a small concentration it falls at the bottom of the ingredient list. However, everyone knows their own hair. We just review the products as informatively as we can and our viewers of course have to decide what works best for them

I have the original one, and I found that it really weighs my hair down....I have to dip my finger in a little...and I mean a little lol!...Idk how you do it
Sometimes different hair types can mean a different amount of product used. If your hair is more fine than probably a little goes a very long way. Shea Moisture products can get out of hand really quickly with the moisture properties and weigh the hair down lol
I have or had can't remember if I gave it away. I personally could not get passed the smell. I kind of smelled black jelly beans and I did not like it. But now if it's not as strong maybe I will try it again. But also I think I remember it being too heavy and weighed down my hair. But maybe I can do the trick u taught me, thinning it out with water.
Tash Velez The newer formula still smelled like the play-doh everyone says it smells like, but not as strong. Whatever the smell is, it didn’t stay...it faded away. Both formulas gave us almost identical results. And yes, you can always dilute a product with water if it’s too heavy. 🤓🦁

That was a year ago now but yes I found the older version and it didn't seem old. I don't use it anymore but can't remember a huge difference between the two.

I’ve only ever seen them on the shelves in Walgreens , sometimes they will have the two different ones. But maybe it depends on where you live.

I have the old formula and it smells like play dough. Every bottle I’ve ever bought seems to smell like play dough. It doesn’t bother me because it doesn’t linger but this stuff rejuvenates my hair when it gets dry. I haven’t tried the new formula yet.
sal3s3 we absolutely love this JBCO leave in. We love both formulas. They produce very little difference in our hair between the new and old formula. We tested the old formula first and this video arose out of the constant comments that there was a new formula. So we went out to but it to test it for ourselves. Thank you for watching. I'd never had the good fortune to try the old formula... I found the new formula didn't really do anything for me. And the smell was so off-putting, I couldn't use it long enough to see if I could make it work.

I’m a wash n go curly girl with low porosity hair. The smell of this formula stays so long because it takes forever for my hair to dry. Also, The ingredients, apple cider vinegar, does not do my hair justice at all. I’m currently searching for a new product.
By the way, I bought that water bottle because of you all. Unfortunately, it does not work well for me because, the water sprays cold even when I fill it with HOT water. Low porosity hair needs warm water.
