  • When I went to pull this planter off the shelf to showcase Edithcolea grandis, I was actually surprised how much it has actually grown! I wish the Euphorbia in this container wasn't so distracting from this pretty (spiky) plant, but as a side note: if you know the species of Euphorb, give a shout out. This plant makes the #296 spot here in "365 Days of Plants".
In this video I'll discuss where it is originally native to, where I'm growing it in my home, and basics like light, watering and fertilizing.
You can check out more of these videos here and on my IGTV @homesteadbrooklyn.

Is it coincidence, I just bought my Edithcolea grandis 6 days ago to replace my plant that rotted and I'm seeing this video right now. Yes the flower is beautiful and quite big compared to the size of the plant. I grow mine in bright light and water every 5 to 6 days. The other plant in the pot I recognized right away because I have one too. That's a Euphorbia pseudoglobosa hybrid. I learn alot watching your videos 😊.

Beautiful, hairy Edithcolea grandís aka ‘Persian Carpet. Mine are blooming all the time. I live in the Caribbean and noticed that if they don’t receive SOME direct sunlight, they will not bloom. They do want some direct sun, otherwise buds will drop off. They also want water in this heat, so I leave them out in the open elements (balcony railing, open atrium, etc).

Another one of those tasty houseplants I've eaten in my travels! 😂 Only the stems are edible and they're commonly consumed in Ethiopia and Somalia. Preparation is very similar to how Nopales are prepared in the southwest and Mexico. Think of it as desert grilled asparagus. 😋

The euphorbia in your pot is E. pfersdorfii f. monstrose. I've had to identify them before, lol.

Picked one of these up in bloom at my local nursery. It was like 1/4 the size of yours and had a bloom. Apparently just treat it like a succulent and give it lots of light :)

A mineral potting mix, bright light, air circulation and light watering and this plant will reward you with some of the most beautiful flowers in the plant kingdom!!! The flowers are mind blowing!

Very interesting plant, if it is a sticky one I tend to shy away from those, but have recently been trying to get into them, and this one is cool looking. Thanks for sharing Summer, and the other variety in that planter I have not ever seen before, but they are really cool looking as well.

Hi Summer. It's difficult to tell but looking at its dentate ribs makes it look like a Euphorbia tubiglans to me. It's a dwarf spineless variety that has a caudex. If you ever repot it I'd be curious to see what its roots looks like. 🤓

Both the Edithcolea and that Euphorbia look supercool! I hope someone can identify the Euphorbia, would love to know what it is.

The euphorbia looks like euphorbia mammillaris but not a 100% sure.
