I found this recipe over 4 years ago, and this has been my go to dish whenever I buy pork belly from Costco (purchased monthly)a lot of my friends and family are not a huge fan of pork, but after making this dish they changed their minds and constantly request this recipe and I would always share this video with them❤️
nice simple recipe. I used to cook braised pork belly many times exactly this way. Only couple suggestions, if you use soya sauce there is no need to add extra salt. Besides, brown sugar is better that white, less sweet and nicely braise pork. Instead of cooking wine I used dry sherry or .... cider. I know, sounds crazy but it cheaper and imo taste better. I cooked for my Chinese friends and never believed that was cider. Actually, I hate drink cider but for cooking is really good. In this case is good to add a pinch of Chinese five spices. If someone likes a bit spicy, I recommend add also two/three grains of Sichuan Pepper.
I agree, soya sauce is full of salt already, no need to add more salt. I also prefer table wine over "cooking wine", lower alcohol level and much more flavorful. A $9-$10 bottle will do just fine. I will try cider next time.
This is a great video. I've eaten this dish dozens of times in China and this recipe is CORRECT. I've written down the cooking process to make it easier for others Ingredients (Listed above) The Cooking Process: Cut pork belly in 1/2 and simmer for 5 minutes - allow to cool cut into square pieces cook oil and sugar until sugar begins to caramelize - fry pork pieces in this for five minutes Add wine and soy sauce and reduce a bit and then add the 1 cup water, star anise & salt. Bring to rapid boil. Add garlic, ginger and green onion. Cover and simmer for 50 minutes. Add rock sugar and reduce sauce over high heat Serve (typical presentation would be in small individual clay pots)
I haven't used this exact recipe yet, but it looks really good, like a solid standard but not excessively complicated, nor oversimplified. I like to make pork shoulder, Boston butt, cut into the same shape with this braised pork belly technique. I'm going to try this recipe on that. I have a feeling this will become my future reference for how to do it.
Can't wait to try tasting and making it for the first time! It looks so amazing! The sugar makes me a bit skeptical; I usually don't like sugar but this looks like it's so worth trying 🤤
using burnt sugar is a very common way of starting stews in Caribbean cuisine. i didn't realize any other food culture used that approach to add a rich brown color to their meat. there is a piece of pork belly in my fridge that is so begging to be made in this manner, though i may pass on the rock sugar at the end and toss in a bit of cornstarch instead to thicken up the sauce. thanks for sharing the video.
man this was so good. i did mine with smoked pork rib meat. I cut down the cooking time a little, I think that'd get the meat a little rough! added some pepper flakes for heat. salty, sweet, tangy, spicy, yummy!
I was told this dish was Mao Zedong(毛泽东)'s favourite dish...I tried it in Beijing and I can see why!! It's truly one of the most mouth-watering dishes I have ever had the pleasure of consuming...just the thought makes my mouth water.
This recipe is delicious. I tried it today for dinner. However, the pork is still quite hard for my liking. Did I do something wrong or overcooked? thank you. will be making it again for sure .
I'd recommend that you cook it a few minutes longer, as she has shown in the video at the beginning or at the end. Usually when meat it still tough or hard, it just needs a little more time on the stove.
+The HeartBrokenBiker pretty sure the sugar later on is just for the shine and you can easily leave out the star anise I'd say. Did you do it though and if yes how'd it turn out

+dabram a Thanks for giving me an alternative to Chinese cooking wine since its next to impossible to find here in Quebec.

Hi Kyle. Cooking meat longer actually makes the meat fall apart. This is especially so for those 'cheaper' cuts like shin, shanks, brisket etc.
I am going to try this recipe. Thank you. 💖🇨🇦👩🏻🍳

I checked with my friends and they say it should cook for four hours if its not in a pressure cooker. Inside the pressure cooker is 30-40 minutes.
Smart recipe.. easy to follow using a bit of commonsense. love it!

@@SandraudigaVali 4 years has passed.... Turns out it's poison if you remove star anis and rock sugar 🤣
star anise and sugar make this dish what it is.
I think hers is the best recipe , where can I find rock sugar ?
Indian store
It’s called MISRI ( mee-shri) in hindi
thank you, method of doing much simpler than the bosses here in Brazil teach
simple and quick. I will cook as well
Love ur channel!!! Thanks for upload!!
Looks so good! Do you have it with rice? Any other suggestion to eat this with??
rice with no salt in it is a beautiful choice !
That is good to eat with just plain rice.
OUTSTANDING !
Can i used beer or any kind of wine instead of the cooking wine? In case i could not find cooking wine. And what can i used instead of rock salt?
I assume a thick coarse salt
Thank youuuu for this video!!! 😍🤤
Really nice!
What might I be able to use in place of rock sugar to add shine to the dish.
This is my faforite food..
It looks like adobo or pork humba, no? I'm curious on how this taste, gosh it looks delicious
Is red bean paste sometimes used in this dish? Is Kau Yuk different?
I don't have rock sugar.. is plain white sugar okay?
It looks yummy, I put some dried black beans when I cook it!
Thank you for the nice video. If the area doesn't sell cooking wine, can hard liquor like brandy / whisky be used instead?
Shaoxing cooking wine actually tastes the same like dry sherry. If you can find sherry you can use that as well.

What kind of side dishes go well with the pork?
Hi what cooking wine and dark soy sauce is she using?
Is this the same as the canned version of stewed pork? thanks
how did you make the garnish on top i think that is scallions right ?
can you show me how ?
Yummmmmy
Yummy!! I love your video and also the backgroung music. May i know what the song is? Gbu
your recipe is excellent but i was confused about the water i think u have something on it...
I guess she used the water she boiled the pork :)
The first water boil is usually to clean the scum out of the meat. That water is thrown out.
Anyone know what kind of cooking wine to use?
Thank you for shared
Looks amazing thankyou ♥
Do we have to add sugars in it?
I love havi g the braising liquid with rice
I used to have this over sweet potato noodles in Shanghai- ah memories :-)
great recipe! looks great! what's the piano music playing? 0_o
What's the reason for boiling the belly?
does the water have corn starch in it?
No
What can I do if I do not have cooking wine?
