  • I watched "Swallow" and felt very connected to the character's struggles with self-worth. My whole life I've been dealing with low self-esteem and feelings of guilt and shame. It's really a journey but it does get better. I resonated with the character of Hunter so much that it felt right to make this film analysis. I hope you enjoy it and find value in it.
"Swallow" is directed by CarloMirabella-Davis and Haley Bennet plays the main character.

Good essay. But I would say her husband definitely doesn't adore her, he adores the idea of a perfect submissive wife and that's it. He doesn't try to help her, he tries to help himself because he actually only cares about the baby and not her. Also, her therapist isnt forced to tell him...she does so after he threatens her that he wont allow his wife to go there anymore.
No one actually cares for her, that's one of the huge points of the movie

He "adores" his FANTASY of her. That what a controlling, angry man or wife beater does. She doesn't exist as her own person with her own thoughts, feelings or ideas to him.

The only way she regained control was by taking the abortion pill. It's not sad, it's triumphant. This film is about how important a woman's right to choose is. Her husband never truly cares for her: in fact no one does. So who is she left with?: herself. And that's why a woman's right to choose must be upheld. In the end, all we truly have is ourselves.

This is by far the only analysis I've seen that actually has a very interesting opinion, every other video I've watched regarding this movie has been rather plain and not very understanding of the main protagonist character, they're just a bunch of dudes watching it out of morbidity. And this, this, was a breath of fresh air after watching Swallow once again, me and my girlfriend loved it, kind regards to you, for the amazing explanation and interpretation of symbols you catched. Keep it up ✨🍀🌦️🌼

This movie hits differently if you're a woman or had the perspective of being treated as a woman at a certain time in their life (like the director who wrote the script too). People through the whole film just see her as this spoiled attention seeking brat who has everything in her life handed to her and everyone just keeps reminding her that whatever is troubling her, it's nothing because they're doing the difficult part they're putting food in the table while she's doing nothing. I think her husband likes her (as he likes one of his ties) but he knows her opinions or feelings don't matter because he can do whatever he wants, she holds no power and everything is his, she's trapped not only in the house/environment but in her pregnancy (that maybe she didn't want yet but it doesn't matter because it's what his family wants). Now that she's pregnant she knows they could throw her out any time after the baby is born and I think she develops this as a result.
When she develops the sickness it's so interesting to see how everyone acts worried not about her but at her baby, everything becomes explicit that she's nothing to them. All the time she was living for others didn't matter and at the end she realises to not feel resentment about her birth and just live for herself

Very good analysis. But I think a lot of people miss the role cinematography plays in the message and symbolism in the movie. If you go back and watch the color red is very significant throughout the movie. The window in the nursery. The marble she swallows. The woman at the party wore red. She wore red in order to impress her husband. She stands infront of a red wall whem the mother n law tells her about her hair. Red represents stop or caution. It represents the anger she can't express. In the movie the color is obvious but subtle almost like the angst she feels when ever she feels she is being pinned to a wall. When ever she feels herself or comfortable she is seen in a room with greens or blues which can signify cleansing and purification.

This was so informative and respectful. I don't think I will watch the movie anytime soon, I'm 17 and I know at this point in my life this movie might be triggering or upsetting. but I will defiantly watch when Im in a good head space. thank you for this analysis !!

I found this movie pretty intense; I was very frustrated with Hunter at first since she was not only harming herself, but potentially her baby as well. As I kept watching it though, there was settle yet disturbing hints with her husband's family, including himself. How he would constantly disregard her, make her feel guilty that he's paying for everything, the odd moments she would have with other characters, etc. I'm glad the guy that was supposed to watch over her helped her out with her escape. She definitely needed it. The phone call at the motel was crazy and I knew he was going to show his true colors at that moment. His mask was gradually slipping, and it finally came off. Now she got a new start and closure from what was haunting her all her life. Not just from escaping her "perfect" life, but seeing her real dad as well. It felt satisfying to see herself for who she truly was. She never was her father or the show pony who had to keep performing. This movie really reminds me of the episode Nosedive from Black Mirror and The Invisible Man movie. They have similar themes and are worth the watch. Anyways, I liked your analysis on this movie and just wanted to share my thoughts! :)

But people get conned back in because they're so nice/funny/affectionate/whatever when they feel like it.
It's a circle. Mr. Sweetheart. Tension. (Can't do anything right) and explosion.
      Rinse and repeat.
They do not change. If forced into abuser's therapy, they might stop assaulting their partner, but they will not stop being an ass. Just saying mean things for no reason
Like if you called them and they said, well, what do you want, apropos of nothing. When it's out if left field, it's confusing to anyone.
The secret is they have a perfect woman no one can live up to. So, their mistakes are held and nurtured for a long time. Until he feels justified to blow up. Sometimes with violence, but often just mean, rude, snotty things they instigate.
Scenario: he's mad she got "all the attention" at a party. Two weeks ago.
      See? That's the problem.
To objective observers, she didn't say half as much as her selfish partner thinks. Because ANY focus on her is too much.
Sort of like violent narcissism. But I don't know it exactly qualifies..I think it should be it's own page in DSM V or whatever version they're on.
This person isn't crazy (usually). They'll use drugs/alcohol as an excise. But it's not a cause in itself.
It's imperative for everyone to read up on this subject.
Being threatened with being hunted down is no joke. And you probably wouldn't get much help if you dated or were married to the perpetrator. Still treated differently that if it's a stranger. It's victim blaming.

    TW: self harm/ SA
I really resonated with this movie because I was sexually assaulted when I was young. This led to self harm as I got older. It does give you a sense of power because everything else feels so out of your control. I went to therapy and dealt with it and am okay now but I saw so much of my own shit in it it was kind of validating in a way.

I was watching the review about this movie from Alteori and it was completely ridiculous like she had no idea about what the movie was reflecting. she was just complaining about how the character is not over her mental health issue yet! and then comparing her life with it. Like if the movie is just simple about house wife takes control over her life in a simple way then it would just become those movies like 'kissing booth' or 'tall girl' which are lame and have no true deeply message. Your analysis is truly ❤️

I saw her compultion as a way to take back control. She had been doing all she could to please her husband while not getting the recognition she needed, and her husband didn't seem to view her much more than what she could do for him. She is already controled by her husbands and other peoples expectations and the idea of a perfect wife. When her mother in law was starting to control her more, after she became pregnant, it led to Hunter starting to claim her body back; an act of hidden (at first) defiance to others control.

I feel like I needed a backtrack to how hunter and the husband richie met/dated. Although in a way distant, I do feel like he cared for her, but just didn't know how to deal with her problems and showed his love in well money, cuz that's how he was showed love in the first place. Her father in law didn't care and didn't want to learn of course so boo, but her MIL I think sympathized. She just got used being passive so she couldn't do much. I get Hunter's lack of control in life and family but I wondered if she could have it back if she really went there and demand it. Watching this I felt conflicted, I'm glad that she found her voice and got her life back, but I still felt a bit sorry for Richie. Was he the best of husbands? no. Did they both have poor communication skills? Very. But I think they both could have ended things better, even though children are a very yes or no thing.

Depression is a luxury if that’s the only problem you have. That’s why the nurse/helper that was hired told her “if you were in the war you wouldn’t have this mind problem. You don’t have any other problems when you’re getting shot at.” This is class consciousness 101. A rich person who worries about nothing else has the luxury to go to a therapist and treat their depression as opposed to someone who lives in a Third World War ridden country.

She acts like, upsie no big deal right? and he is like: buuu i i don't have another tie that matches this shirt, look what you have done. The movie is more about a toxic relationship. Toxic relationships don't have to be over the top, like she tells him: i made something unespected today, i choose the curtains, and he answer: are you sure that they are the right colour, like, she can't even choose curtains... she is not being treated like a human being with needs and free will
