  • The pecs are the most overrated muscle group in history.
Thanks to the fitness industry's obsession with bodybuilding and bench press numbers, we collectively have a chest fetish even though the reality of the situation is that the chest muscles do very little in terms of enhancing overall usefulness, functionality or athleticism.
In terms of athletics, the pecs are essentially worthless and glutes, quads, hamstrings, and lower legs are much, much more important than the size of your chest.
And in terms of REAL LIFE, the shoulders and the back are simply more important muscle groups in general. They do more things for you and they allow you to get more things done.
The pecs don't really do anything except make you the human version of a peacock. So stop obsessing over the size of your chest.

And he’s totally right as far as pecs being way down the list of useful muscles. Pretty much everything else comes before them for generalised strength in day to day life, whether that’s digging out postholes, carrying heavy shit, or jumping fences and running to evade police. Chest size (not strength) is overly romantized and it is a FACT. They dont even add as a formidable/powerful/masculine appearance as shoulders, traps or forearms for the upper body. It's not the matter of not wanting to grow your pecs, it's the matter of the juice not worthing the squeeze. No sport but bodybuilding need a big chest because it takes away from your other body parts because just like any body part, it requires time and energy which is finite.

Interesting take. Nothing but mad respect for what you do, man. But I do have some counterpoints. Obviously you are very strong and successful with your athletic endeavors, so what you're saying is not wrong in terms of what you are training to achieve. However, I don't think extra chest muscle would hurt anyone's performance. And I doubt anyone would mind extra pec muscle regardless of their goals. In fact, gaining pec size could improve one's weighted push-ups and dips, which are great exercises for athletes due to the benefit of practicing moving your body through space. This would also build general pressing strength, not to mention that it is just fun to train with bodyweight exercises.

It's the fact that sports demand more training on other body parts that isn't the chest. A person only has a finite of time and energy to train and spending it on chest which doesn't nearly contribute as much as another body part in their sport is simply wasted energy and time.

i believe both sides are triggered here honestly .
    the Strength/Athletic side :
"Chest is useless , it's overrated , u're just gonna look like a peacock"
    the Bodybuilders :
"Omg u're just copping because ur chest is small"
both is just stupid takes i am sorry , its all depend on your goal at the end .
if ur goal is aesthetics and bodybuilding the chest is important as the other muscles and u should train it (not at the detriment of everything else tho)
and if u're a Powerlifter a stronger pecs gonna lead to Stronger Bench .. duuh
if u're a Sprinter or Oly lifter then it's low priority

i like a good spicy take like this, but i think this is entirely false, and your emphasis on "athleticism" is cope.
i can say with complete certainty, that functionality and survivability are not why 90% of western men lift, (despite what you may think), and you're most likely in denial if you believe this to apply yourself.
the shape of your pecs are the #1 thing people (and women especially) look at when they rate your physique. if you want a "good" physique, you can't just settle for "somewhat good" pecs. they are the muscle group experts and even non-lifters critique and nitpick. they are quite literally only display of musculature on your frontside.
you don't subject yourself to all this pain to get strong, you do it because you expect better of yourself, and the higher standard you expect of yourself is revealed by the appearance of your physique.
edit: i looked at your channel to see your physique. everything you said checks out...

for anyone who missed the point of the short, he's not saying to avoid training your pecs - he's saying to stop obsessing over them. they're generally not as vital to overall performance as other muscle groups (e.g, back, legs, even arms). obviously there are exceptions, but in general, too many people worry about their pecs for no reason

@@tomashorst9544 I mean, he kind of mentioned what the most functional body parts are (legs, shoulders, back), and with regards of the the last comment, I mean he is kind of right. The chest is more of an aesthetic muscles and it's function does not goes beyond that ( unless you're a powerlifter or gymnast).
And I really don't think he is jealous about not having a big chest or anything. If you've seen his channel for a while, you know he does not care at all about "aesthetics" or anything like that. He's goal has always been athletics.
