BMW F01 /F02 common blower motor NOISE and the EASY fix to DIY

- A video on how to fix blower motor noise in an F01 and F02 from 2008 up to 2015, quite common the mesh filter deteriorates and allows leaves and other debris enter the motor.
As the motor is balanced a little leaf is enough for the engine to get out of balance and sound like a jet plane.
Part number of the cover is BMW # 64119216222
This was great. The BMw shop quoted me $438!!! For an AC Motor and this was I needed to do. I appreciate the detailed instructions. I even got a ton of brownie points from my wife 😂.
Thanks also. Managed to take the entire unit out and chuck a replacement one in there. Replaced the filter material with some from fish tank suppliers :) £70 all in and a couple of hours work. Really glad I found this,
Hey! How did you replace the filter material?!
@@AddisonFisher-qy9vx I'm thhinking the same but fish tank filters are great idea. Just cut to size.
I feel like a winner, just finished replacing this part, cleaning out the blower fan and now my A/C is quiet again and working properly. Thank you so much for this great video Made it easy and according to the guy above I saved anywhere from $500- $1400 dollars. 💪🏼 The part cost me $61 at the Dealership
That is why I make these video's :)
Explains more about the bolts than what he is even trying to do. Ugh
Nice !!!! I can't believe I went to a BMW dealership 3 years ago and they said they had no idea what was causing the noise. And they told me they'd have to take the whole dash down to fix the problem. I WALKED AWAY !!!!
I wish I could personally meet you and shake your hand for making this video. My 2009 750Li had this exact problem. I found your video and watched it 6 times over two weeks.
This morning when I woke up I decided today is the day. I gathered my tools together and started following your video, step-by-step. It took me about two hours but it's done, and the rumbling noise is gone. My only casualty was the loss of one of the blower motor cover screws, which fell down somewhere in that area and I couldn't find it. I replaced the screw.
I didn't buy a new cover. I had some of that soft mesh material in my office, so I was able to cut it to fit, clean the cover very well, glue the sift mesh material to it and re-install the cover. I also changed the two cabin air filters, and the engine air filters. My total cost was $88 for the cabin, and engine filters. The soft mesh was already in the house.
I'm sure BMW would have hit me up fior $500 to $600 to do what I did today.
Your video was a GREAT help. Thanks again. 😎👍
Dude. Saw this some time ago. Recently affected myself. Came back to say thanks. I didnt order a replacement filter. I replaced the filter with the filter of a shop vac. Looks exactly the same
Thanks for the video, it saved me 650.00 bucks. I spend 45 on the part. Dealer quoted 700.00 to fix it on my 2014 Alpina B7 and they told me it was a common problem and they constantly suggest to BMW to fix the part. In my car all the mesh was gone and there were two leaves in the blower cage causing the noise. I have never seen such a ridiculous part on a very expensive car, I love um but this is proof Germans drink on the job.
What's up guys. Since my 2009 750Li is down and waiting for turbos to arrive in the mail. I decided to open up the blower compartment since my fan is embarrassing loud when the fan is a max cool. Welp you guessed it my screen is completely gone except for one small square at the bottom left... I had about four large leafs in the fan motor. I ordered a now housing cover from FCP Euro and the cabin filters replacements. They offer life time warranty on everything they sale. This weekend project turbo replacement on my 2009 750Li @ 82,000 miles TX. I'm not a mechanic but a beginner DIY mechanic lol. Thats for the video Homerras
Thanks for video no one wanted to do this job for me and quoted me too much
So I did the job mt self and cost me only £80 for motor .
Thanks again
Dear Sir! You are the best! I have done such clean today according to your manual and there were some leaves found in the fan. I have cleaned them and now is blows perfect!!!
Wow that's a lot of work for such a simple fix. Thanks for the great video. How much was that part from BMW?
This is awesome. Thanks. Few days ago a mechanic asked for $1400 to "fix" this noise!!!! Another one asked for $550
That is why I make these video's :) Please subscribe
@@BMWorks_NL and we truly thank you! 👍🏿
Thank you so much I fixed it over the summer. Thank you for the video. You are one of the few that do DIY videos for the F01/F02 chassis.
Thanks for video, my car is F02/N57 engine, very similar setup. I had error code for an obstruction in fan blower, following your guide, found filter full of dust/debris - cleaned. Out of curiosity removed fan blower, it was free from any dirt and fan moved freely. Set A/C to internal circulation and observed flaps closed for external air and the other flaps open - it was good to see how it works. Thanks again.
I fixed mine with a piece I cut from a 3M Filteret Basic filter used for Window Mounting A/C units. The filter is very low resistance while the material is washable and long lasting compared to the material on the original part that degrades in short time. For securing the filter piece into the case cover, I used a double sided tape for electronics. The adhesive is strong while still removable if I need to replace the filter piece in the future. No need to spend on the original cover unless the part is cracked. My part cost was just under US$6.00
Hi Pedro thanks for the tip! Is the window mount one made differently than the big ones for the home HVAC ones?
@@tiebei2548 Yes, the window mounted AC filters are different than the big home HVAC ones. The window AC filters are made to be washable and made of different mesh types and thickness. I selected one that is 3/8-inch thick.
@@pedrogonzalez9943 thanks a lot man. I know the type you're talking about now! Almost bought the big one for a furnace lol
@@tiebei2548 I wish I could send you a picture of the product. I bough one that is synthetic color blue, it does not degrade and it is resistant to mold
Great video.my 2016 5 series started to make a noise when the air con fan was at max . Had quotes from £600 to £280. After watching your video this cost me nothing. Turns out a BMW label inside the fan housing was lodged in the fan blade area . 1 hour of my time and I'm no mechanic . Thanks you
Thank you for putting on an excellent start to finish remove and replace video.
You should not get any negative comments on this. Shame on those people. I say if you dont like the video, or dont have the mechanical skills to do the job, pay a real man to do it.
Ill do it for you for $700.00.
Again well done.👍
Just purchased a 2013 F02 and your videos are coming in CLUTCH because not too much info on these cars in comparison to 3 and 5 series thanks!
I just fixed my BMW - So happy. No more noise.
Thanks so much for this! Dealer wanted over $500 to do it. Part was only $40 on eBay. Took my unskilled hands 2 hours. Sounds perfect now!
I just did this repair today. Worked perfectly but even with skilled hands it took about 2 hours of labor. Lots of reaching in to get the small screws out without dropping them. I only lost one! The electronics box on top is a real PITA because it gets on the way of easy access.
Cheers Homerraas! First job I did on my new-to-me F01. Next job: valve cover replacement.
Dankjewel; mooi setje tutorials heb je gemaakt.
Excellent video - used this to clean out the blower and filter on a 2013 528xi.
Found a f***ing desiccated baby mouse! I think the motor may need to be replaced but it sounds thousand times better.
Great video, what's easier is to remove the 2 hood shocks, push the hood all the way back, remove the ac controller one screw, then the 4-5 screws at the base of blower and remove entire unit, this is for replacing the blower and resistor but great job
Thank you so much for this video. I recently noticed a similar noise in my car and also saw the black crumbles when I replaced my air filter. You just saved me $$&& and your video are very clear and concise. Thanks again for sharing
Thanks for the video, it saved me 450 dollars at the dealership.
thanks for the video. this helped to replace my housing cover and replace the fan motor too as it was shot. all in with shipment cost me $200 and 3 hours of my time. I only managed to drop 2 bolts in the cave.
🤣
I did mine today. I lost one screw.
Cost about $6 to fix that cabin motor blower housing with some screen film from Home depot. Cut the correct size and glued that sucker very well with jist hot glue! Permanent fix. Removed 2 small leafs that where inside the blower, put everything back and no more jet engine noise and no more leafs going inside the blower.
Always do the job right so you never.do it twice!
I used an home A/C filter and did wonders. Thank you for the detailed walk through.
Great stuff, thank you. I just bought a 2015 F02 and have this issue. I’ll be following your instructions soon. Cheers
Thanks! Great video! Mine is now fixed and quiet. Took me about 2 hours.
Thank you! This is exactly what I was looking for.
Also, your voice is indistinguishable from Alan Alda’s.
Instablaster.
Awsome video you definitely saved me serious cash used window screen. More durable than whatever bmw is selling.
You saved me $1400. Thanks sir.
Amazing. I have this exact same noise in my 750li. I'm going to do this cleaning job next weekend. Thanks so much for this video.
Awesome video. I have been dealing with this for about a year. The dealer wants to work it. Yeahhhh that won't be cheap. Thanks to you, its not as bad as I thought it was. I thought by motor was just going out. I will be doing this repair myself. I am thinking about doing hardware cloth and not so dense filter floss on the outside though.
Just did this on my 2014 740Li. I replaced the blower motor as well while everything was taken apart. $33 for the motor, $10 for the filter material.
My 740 Li 2009 same problem ! THANK YOU SOOOOOOOO MUCH !!!!!!! I am Veryyyy veryyy happy thank you fot the A M A Z I N G video
Great video man, there are very few F01 F02 videos on UA-cam looking forward to future videos..
Thank you for sharing - now I can fix my car.
Thank you so much, I was skeptical at trying this but will be giving this a shot today thanks again!
Did you ever do the filter work?
Great video. Can you tell me where the blower resistor module is located? I have a 2014 BMW 750Li and it needs to be replaced.
I’ve been trying to work out the same thing, watching the video is it visible at 10:50 to 11:20, that metal rectangle next to the fan looks like the reverse side of it to me. Could be wrong
I have the same issue ! I'm going to follow your video, hoping it will fixe this sound :)
very good explanation, it has been very useful to me now my fan sounds again as it should, thanks
Thanks for the video my friend. I ordered a new engine. My problem is that when I turn it to the highest level, it makes so much noise that it turns off by itself. Do I need to replace the motor in this case? Just need cleaning?
Greetings, did you disconnect the battery to perform this task?
Thanks. Good fix on my 2013 640i Gran Coupe. 👍🏿
“Displugged”?
How hard was it to remove the sensor from the filter housing and install in the the new housing?
thanks. just took apart mine, now gonna figure out how to replace the mesh. any ideas? thinking of gluing some taperware cushion, the ones where you put in the kitchen drawers
Thanks for the simple fix
My blower does not work on heat or ac. What should I replace?
so i did this, but what happened to me, was that the blower motor would go on, but nothing through the vents. i replaced the wiring loom, regulator and blower motor. the blower motor goes on, but nothing through the air vents? what do you think would cause this
Just completed this. Thanks for the video. Saved a ton of money. 👍👍
How long did it take?
@@carycoller3140 took my unskilled - never do car work - hands about 2 hours.
@@emcconnell I did mine too. I used the video all the way. Took me about 4 hours because I went on to do cabin air filters and the two engine air filters since I already had all that stuff taken out. When I turned on my fan motor and that noise was gone I was very happy with myself. I almost entertained the idea of opening up my my own repair shop. That thought lasted 10 minutes 😂.
@@carycoller3140 That's funny! The cabin filter is next for me - hope it doesn't take me another 2 hours! :)
@@emcconnell It's a chore. It'll take you 45 min to an hour. Check out the videos first.
Spot on directions I really appreciate it. Thank you. 🙏🏼
My 750 2007 model just started making a noise sounds like a blower fan...is this what your talking about in this vedio?
i just did this in the dark on my F10 and mine does have the newer one where they heat melted the foam to the housing and it still fell apart from age. i just cut some window screen left over from my patio screen door fold it over twice and glued it in. And i actually did it twice because after i put everything back i realize i forgot to plug in the motor connector.
🤣
Great job!! My 2011 535 just started making this noise so hopefully this fix my problem as well! Quick question, did u have to unplug your car battery for any of this?
Nope
Thank You, i have the same problem on F07 2015. I guess il be ordering some parts :)
Is there a fuse by the battery or fusebox or relay for this blower motor? If so any help what number it may be?
This is a great video. Did you have to remove the Battery terminal before you did this? My car needs FSU replaced. Thank you.
Thank You ever so much! 2 GBP 15ppi aquarium filter from Ali will do the job 😊
Thanks alot for this great information and deatiles
Since the driver and passenger can have different fan speeds/ one on one off option where is the second blower motor ? In looking up the part I see some have two cages and some one. Does the motor have independent control of these two cages or is there another location where I would need to repeat for the drivers side ?
Micah Thomas There is only one blower, the rest is controlled via the valves of the HVAC system
Thanks for the reply. I have a 2010 550i GT with 170K on it. One time My blower made that same noise but what drives me crazy is when the fan is low I get this shrill hamster cage noise. Used to do it when the passenger AC was on now does it for both. When the car leans forward from braking it makes the noise so it’s intermittent.
Hoping my model is the same procedure as yours. The GT is different in every possible way from other models. Drives me and my mechanic crazy lol
Great video DIY. I have the same issue and hope this will fix it. How did you remove the torx screw at 6:40? The one in the back left corner.
How did you unplug the two plugs on the blower motor assembly at approximately 8:58 two closest to the passenger side
Aaron Dillon pinch and pull
Toughest part of the job removing the plugs, they have a very small tab which need to be depressed to remove. Plus on mine on of the bracket slides down to remove not up.
Lastly on the cover that plug has two flaps on the back which have to be squeezed to remove. The torex bolts are difficult to get to but can be remove wo much difficulty if you take your time.
Awesome, thanks for the great explanation and great job.
Great video. Fixed my blower problem that's existed for years and saved me hundreds of dollars! Thanks for putting together. One quick question: do you know what the sensor that attaches to the blower house cover does? Just curious. Thanks again!
Checking the air quality that comes to the a/c
Nice work, E. ♥️
Do you have the filter cover housing part number?
Shermel Russell do you read the video info? ;)
I have the same problem. Do I need to replace just a cover or I have to replace a whole motor with the housing? Thanks
no. a better option is to go to homedepot buy a outdoor/pool cage screen. use the pool cage screen and glue it around to replace the foam. the foam will disintegrate again in a couple of years. pool cage screen are made out of kevlar and can last 15 years out in the sun. its a much stronger material.
Wish I had found your channel before replacing my motor last summer. After replacing the motor my ac coolant leaked and won’t keep a recharge. It’s been diagnosed with a high side service line leak($1,415). Could it be related to the work I did or just a coincidence? I’m watching your oil stand gasket replacement video next. Do you have one for changing out the ac line?
Blower and AC are not related.
I have not encountered a bad line yet therefore I cannot make a video about it, as soon as I encounter one I will make a video
Thanks alot for that helpful video .
Waldo out here fixing bmws 😂😂😂
why work so much its only3 screws and you have the whole unit aside
Great video!
Hi there, took everything out, took the filter out, it still growls like crazy ? Anything else it could be ? Much appreciated. Motor clean etc. Filters clean and recently changed.
Junk in the blades? Does it turn stiff when off? Could be the bearing that is going out
@@BMWorks_NL no, i cleaned it last time, but it still did like crazy, then i changed cabin filters. Does the dashboard have any other fans inside ? Sounds like it's coming from behind the central vents, i mean i can hear some noise from by sticking my ear on the fan housing inside the engine bay, but it hardly makes any noise compared to the noise i hear when sticking my ear against the dash.
@@BMWorks_NL i lubed the motor and it's quiet now
I replaced my blower motor with another complete. I still get no air through the front vents. The rear yes. Any help?
There is only one motor. If you get air In the rear it’s working. I would check HVAC panel and see if the flaps work to change the airflow
@@BMWorks_NL car was involved in a collision where airbags deployed. Do you think something tripped?2011 alpina b7
@@BMWorks_NL there is a rear blower motor in this car a whole.
I made the rookie error of buying:
new resister
new regulator (even though there are 2 on the unit!)
new blower motor
It made no difference! AC Blower is still dead!
DO you know if there is an additional 'blower final stage unit' that's inside the cabin on these cars? I thought that the resister shown in your video (in silver) was it!? But thinking now there is another module... anyone that can help on this? 2013 730Ld F02
Hie ! the dash blower doesn't work, you think it's because of what ? The blower motor or the regulator ? Thank's a lot !☺️
Check for power first and read codes. If both ok, likely the motor (resistor is part of motor)
@@BMWorks_NL hello boss, today i made a diagnosis. there is a fault in the air conditioning. the fault says "the ventilation motor has detected a blockage at the last level" and "electrical overload". Blower motor problème ?

Very good video thank you for sharing
Great job thank you dude 👍🏼
Hi, where is the HVAC FSU located?
Exactly! I changed all these parts and still no joy... now I am on the hunt for a FSU but nothing in the repair manual under that term... and no reference to it's removal process anywhere. Is it inside the cabin?
does anyone know what this sensor 7:23 is called and what its purpose is?
thats basically air quality sensor, if you set ventilation to auto, if it detects the outdoor air is bad it switch automatically to interior circulation
So how do you like the build quality and the wrenching time on the newer 7’s?
great video! how do you know if the problem is the blower motor itself. My mechanic recently charged me $700 for that noise. He says it's the blower motor for sure... and cover is good.
Young Money simple, take the cover off and run the motor :)
You can also visually inspect the filter just by lifting off the first plastic cover held in by clips at the beginning of the video. Very easy to peak under the wiring harness holder and see broken filter bits. This is an embarrassingly bad design by BMW. It's as if they knew this would be a problem and purposely built it into the design so dealers could make $500-750 a pop - plus early retirement of the blower motor itself.
How did you know the source of the problem at first?
Abdurahman Almatrodi lol!!! The sound of a jet fighter coming through my vents.......
Maybe something inside. Really, I wounder how did you decide it is the problem!. :). Btw, thanks for your videos, you saved me some real money.
Abdurahman Almatrodi simple diagnosis, as soon as I turned the fan speed down the noise went away when I increased it it came back so it had to do with the blower speed, That automatically leads to the blower motor that is how I found it out
Changed my filter today, think this is my next project AC on my f10 sounds like a jet engine 😖
Thank you!!!
I just found this video and the video I watched had me undo all the wires. My positive lead hit the bar and caused a spark. Now my car says drivetrain malfunction and won’t start. Can anyone help me?
Christian Bruffy-Holmes next time ALWAYS disconnect the battery. Check your fuses! You probably blew one when you made the short
did you solve your issue?
@@asadthecool
The Powertrain Malfunction appears because you disconnect the small red power connectors that are on the top housing where all those wires are at on top of the plate the you remover to access the blower screen housing. Once you reconnect that red power cable and put everything back, the Power train Malfunction goes away cause now its receiving power.
Did you figure out what happened when you sparked the positive lead. I have same problem. Strongly recommend that anyone doing this DIY to tape up that contact. My car will not start and drive train malfunction message comes up.
@@james2864 same here, how to get that fixed?
In the middle of this job right now....it is quite troublesome, but please note i don't have any mechanical skills
Dan Alex you can do it!!!!!
@@BMWorks_NL those back clamps on the case are killing my fingers !! 10nx for the encouragement ! :)))
Job completed succesfully. Fan was rather clean, i believe the noise came from the inside filters in my case, which i will also be replacing soon, now i just gave them a good vacuuming! But that sponge/filter was fully clogged with leaves and other debris.
@@MrAlpinab7 Great job, you saved a few 100 by doing it yourself!
@@BMWorks_NL saved more than that. In my country, (eastern europe) the DEALERSHIP steals parts from the clients' cars !! That is done in order to come more often and pay more and more money. Learnt it the hard way, same with Porsche, Volvo, etc (steals good parts and replaces them with old, defective parts). Even the new oil and filter in the car is stolen, put in another clients car who came in for regular oil intervals. Thus, they dont incur costs, one client gets his service done, and doesnt even know it and the other customer has to come back and pay yet more money.
Thanks, great video.
