Ikki and Arabian and few other unknown NES games were actually in the 31 in 1 cartridge, I remember because I owned it, there were quite a few weird games on it.
Ufouria: The Saga was previewed and reviewed in magazines such as Electronic Gaming Monthly, Nintendo Power, GamePro and VideoGames & Computer Entertainment, in addition to being showcased in playable state to attendees at the 1991 WCES, and planned for a fall 1991 launch before being delayed to early 1992 release, but the North American localization was cancelled after Sunsoft of America did not approve the game due to its quirky character designs. There was also an advert to promote the game in the US, but even then, it became a collector's item and sells for a higher price, thus making it a rare item. Can you beat the best? The ad showed Super Spy Hunter, Batman: The Video Game, the Game Boy Batman: The Video Game, Gremlins 2: The New Batch - The Video Game, the Game Boy Gremlins 2: The New Batch - The Video Game, and U-four-ia: The Saga. David Siller, Sunsoft of America's former vice president of development, claimed that the company's managers felt the game's characters were too "strange or quirky" compared to cartoons by The Walt Disney Company and Warner Brothers, with Gimmick! also suffering the same fate. However, Siller stated that both titles most likely could have been commercial successes late in the NES’ lifespan. It would later be delayed, before getting cancelled sometime around 1993. According to many sources, the game was to be released in 1992, which contradicts previous knowledge that it was to be released in 1991. That game should've been released on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in the U.S. a long time ago. Two prototypes of the game, one of which was the then-lost US prototype, would eventually be found by Armadylo on March 2021. Following this discovery, ROM images for it were released, now debunking its "lost" status. It got a VidPro card made. The screenshots in the ads show slight differences from the European version.
I'm a big fan of Hebereke! It has such a big, fun world to explore, even if it took me a long time to figure out that you have to press down while jumping to stomp on enemies. I'm also a pretty big fan of Lipple Island and Maharajah; both do have translation patches, and the latter actually has turn-based battles, kind of like a much less grindy Sword of Hope.
I looked up the Baseball game and it's NPB Baseball Video Game and it has the Nippon Professional Baseball license. The 6 Central League teams and the 6 Pacific League Teams.
In case ya need context for Ikki, yer basically playing as a farmer revolting against his daimyo/emperor, killin ninjas and collecting withheld payments in the form of Koban coins
We got both U-Four-Ia and Mr Gimmick here in the Scandinavia region, and I had fun with them... but not super-rarity you pay thousands of kronor-fun. Also, I'd like a video of Barcode Battler, I'm only vaguely aware of the conceot but it seems like such a cool "of it's time" gimmick. It probably costs as heinously much as a cartridge of Mr Gimmick does these days...
John the only difference between the US and JP Alien Syndromes is the US one credits Tengen instead of Sunsoft and starts on the title screen instead of the cutscene. Otherwise they're the same exact game.
Mr. Gimmick BARELY came out in Europe, actually only Scandinavia and in very small quantities. However we did get Ufouria, and I'm glad we did, because it's a cute and well-made game in the style of Metroid but with a group of characters with different abilities. I also own a copy of Atlantis no Nazo, and somehow I like the game, even though it's admittedly not great
Was about to say, I played this back in the day and didn't even know it was a super-rarity. Still not sure why the PAL release was limited go Scandinavia only.
How's the music in these games? Sunsoft was consistently making bops for their games back then. The music from Batman on the NES and Genesis are on constant loop in my brain to this day.
It's worth mentioning that Atlantis no Nazo and Ikki were massive hits in Japan, to the point where they're still trying to push them (especially Ikki) one way or another. Ikki is supposedly responsible for the term 'kusoge - crappy game', hahah. Their bad/average games generally sold much better over there, good games like Blaster Master or Batman didn't, so that's what they're generally known for in Japan, funnily enough.
Nantettatte Baseball is actually notable for it's unique cartridge as its one of the few that had it's own cartridge port to expand the game in the case of this baseball game Sunsoft released two stat update cartridges and nowadays those smaller cartridges for this game are considered to be one of the most expensive Famicom related items especially in regards to the second expansion cartridge
after seeing AVGN review bad Back To The Future games, my curiosity for region exclusive games skyrocketed. also it helps a lot that these games have translation patches for them.
Ufouria (Hebereke) is one of the best NES games ever! Big open world, 4 awesome playable characters, controlls are top notch and got those sweet sweet tunes. Simply awesome! :]
Oi Riggsy, did you mention that Route 16 is available on the Japanese version of NSO for Switch? That's how I played it. Seems like a Pac Man clone to me. Also Atlantis no Nazo was on Famicom Classic Mini from 2016
Nintendo of Americas release requirements to prevent saturation of the market is likely the thing the kept many of these games from coming to America. And preventing that saturation you can blame on Atari. Which sucks that to reinvigorate the video game market in America meant we didn’t get all the games Japan and Europe did.
Gimmick / Mr. Gimmick is the one that really angers me, I guess... I got myself a AV Famicom console in 2022, with it in mind to be able to collect and play games for it that are notoriously "rare and expensive" on the NES / north american releases (examples like Little Samson and Bonk) - but Gimmick is still extremely expensive, at least for the japanese version... so I ended up getting a flash cartridge for the console, but, I'm glad to know it's available on the Switch (actually looking at the game's wikipedia page now, I didn't realize there are a remake and a remaster in the works, or already out... still cool, either way).
I'm sad that Sunsoft is remaking Ufouria instead of just porting it to modern consoles. Also, I am not a fan of the first character's japanese look (the one with the blue hat). I prefer the PAL version of the character.

Sun soft was absolutely killing it with Batman back in the day
When I was a kid, a sunsoft logo was a better bet than the Nintendo seal of quality as an indicator that the game would be good or not.
Anytime I can get John Riggs talking about Gimmick is a good day indeed.
"Something's wrong with his wing of medulla oblongata.."
"No Colonel NES..you're wrong..."
1:17 only in Scandinavia, not all PAL
Ikki and Arabian and few other unknown NES games were actually in the 31 in 1 cartridge, I remember because I owned it, there were quite a few weird games on it.
Love the blaster master t-shirt
I think the soccer aka football game you mentioned is Captain Tsubasa
Believe it or not, Atlantis no Nazo was planned to come out in the US but as a sequel to Super Pitfall of all things.
Fantasy Zone is the best classic retro game ever from Sunsoft.
No, Batman is

“Super Arabian” looks like a faithful home console release of Sun Electronics 1983 “Arabian” arcade game. I didn’t know it existed. Thanks!
I luv that Blaster Master T-shirt you have on
That baseball game kinda looks like Baseball Simulator 1000

Today I got Sunsoft collection 1 for Evercade, Mr. Gimmick is on there. Funny timing for this video 😂
Living here 7 years, collecting famicom is a blast. Sunsoft does have bangers along with Konami.
John the only difference between the US and JP Alien Syndromes is the US one credits Tengen instead of Sunsoft and starts on the title screen instead of the cutscene. Otherwise they're the same exact game.
"Route 16" is an arcade port that did come to America.
This is a great series! Looking forward to SNK, Data East and Irem. Keep it up!

What if I totally mispronounced Hebereke. Can you imagine?
And you did not mention that it came out in Europe.
Gimmick looks like it would be great for speedruns.
I remember that Barcode Battler was HUGE in Japan.
9:00 I used to play Shanghai II in the early SNES days and forgot all about it. I do remember now wondering where the first game was.
水戸黄門 is Mito Kōmon. It is a very famous (jidaigeki) TV series.
How's the music in these games? Sunsoft was consistently making bops for their games back then. The music from Batman on the NES and Genesis are on constant loop in my brain to this day.

quality games on the NES spoke loudly in those days.

awesome video riggs, your channel has been killin it. Love it

Sunsoft easily in the top 5 NES developers.
hope youre being accuarate jhon and youre not missing any! im counting on this videos for my collecting of japanese games!
Recently got a "New Famicom" aka top loader version and am loving collecting Famicom carts! Sorry you couldn't fix my Batman, but thanks for trying!
The land of the rising sun 🇯🇵
I've played a few of these. I like Route 16 a lot.
Love that tshirt. Stella, right?
The next Japanese only Famicom Games video must be IREM !!!
Tecmo or Natsume as well
@@PsychomachineryEBM YES indeed!
Nothing could possibly be worse than the Super Pitfall that was released on NES.
I bought the couple air fresheners in Moses Lake and i have the adventure island one in my car and it smells great
OK but does it smell like adventure island?
Go Gimmick 👍
Sunsoft and Konami had the best chips for 8-bit music
“Atlantis no Nazu”
Ikki and Super Arabian basically my early taste to gaming. Thanks to my dad's famicom.
Oi Riggsy, did you mention that Route 16 is available on the Japanese version of NSO for Switch? That's how I played it. Seems like a Pac Man clone to me. Also Atlantis no Nazo was on Famicom Classic Mini from 2016
We weren't cool enough to earn the game.

Thats a dope Blaster Master Tee.
Great video John! Your Japanese is SUPERB!
you's a liar lol
@@JohnRiggs bwhahahaha

Have you done a video on the games you've made?
Just Yeah Yeah Beebiss II. And will do one on Chew Chew Mimic when the kickstarter goes live.
They look fun
That shirt though! Where can I get that??!?!?!?
We need a new psvr2 video I need some recommendations
I'm watching this vid on my phone via my WiFi ROOTER... It's definitely route not "root." lol
We actually did get U-four-ia: The Saga as well as Mr. Gimmick for NES here in the EU.
I want that T-shirt
There's so many games that never released here in the US because they showcased that "Japanese weirdness" I'm very jelly
John that shirt is dope! How do I get one?
It's a JangoSnow design I've had for probably 8 years. I think he still sells it on his site.
@@JohnRiggs he did still have them! Thanks a ton. I also found a startropics one too. Thanks again, you're a legend!
Ufouria rules!
Those look like Japanese coins to me

👍👍™️
An updated remake of Blaster Master would be awesome.
I have the Covid 19 hack of Route 16 that you made. It's pretty fun
One of the biggest Nintendo mistakes was bringing Sega games to the NES. They all look bad. Altered Beast is one of the worst.
❤❤❤💖💖💖💖amazing 💋👌
The baseball game looked like the Tengen baseball game on the nes. 🫡
