When the "Deep Fakes" software was released, it immediately reminded me the facial video editing from this movie. Also, just realized this video is 3 years old already. The Running Man is one of my favorites movies of that time.
One of my favorite movies and one of my favorite books. The story in the book is so much better than the story in the movie, it deserves its own movie. Y'all have a badass day 🤘🍻🤘
Everytime I hear the Intro I just wish everyday was 1987 , great movies ( practical effects and smart minimal CGI use ), great games , great technology , great music , and a far more sane society. #NostalgiaUltra
On a very depressing note. The actor that played Dynamo passed away a few months after filming ended because of heart failure at only 34. He was a very versatile man. He was an actor, wrestler, opera singer and he studied computer science at MIT! Sad that such a talented person had to go so soon.
That's the thing about 80s movies for me, sure they have some dated and cheesy moments, but *_that's_* what makes them fun for me. Most of today's movies don't seem to have that sense of fun 80s movies have. I think _Guardians of the Galaxy_ is probably the closest to capturing that 80s feel, cause it almost feels like a fun 80s space action-adventure movie.
I grew up with Sky Movies in the early 1990s so yeah, The Running Man was part of that, see also... Cherry 2000, The RoboCop Trilogy, They Live, Commando, Raw Deal, The Terminator, the Mad Max Trilogy, Demolition Man, Total Recall, The Gremlins Duology, My Stepmother Is An Alien.
The Running Man is awesome. I love it. But i also cant help but think what Paul Verhoeven would have done with it - the social satire of the film is right up his alley.
This film and the amazing game, for Megadrive 2 (genesis for the yanks), 'Super Smash TV' were staples of my childhood. That game always felt like an unofficial companion piece to this film.
Nice review guys. I agree with you both about this movie. I like the commercials, especially Captain Freedom's workout but I do think that Robocop's commercials are funnier and better quality.
RINNING MAN was the first modern Gladiator film (since 1975s DEATH RACE 2000 any way_ that never equalled the odd popularity of - HUNGER GAMES or...MAZE RUNNER setting a trend for these kind of films.
Solid film, though definetly not up to the standard of Predator or Total Recall. I have always felt that in the hands of a Paul Verhoeven, this film could have been a real classic! Paul Michael Glaser did a good job, especially when it came to the action sequences, but he seemed less interested in the satirical elements which could have really given the film the substance of Robocop or Starship Troopers. But with that said, The Running Man, as it is, still manages to be the perfect saturday night movie!
2 things I had no idea about here because I haven't seen this in maybe 25 years and was too young to put the faces (people) together at the time but Yaphet Coto (spelling?) from Aliens was one of Arnie's co contestants in this?! Also Mic Fleetwood was the resistance leader?! Fuck man I gotta watch this again and not with 12-13 year old eyes cause I actually didn't really like this as a kid.
I'm surprised they don't mention Arnold with a beard. That was my first reaction with this movie early on. Like holy shit, Arnold has, a beard!!! What the fuck!!!!
I'd read this Stephen King story, and hated this movie because of it. Had it just been it's own story, I'd have been with it. Not a bad cheesy 80s actioner.
+Mr Zeus Not every film needs a remake. If they remade it, it'd probably suck even more if they went with a similar theme. They need to just make it an adaptation of the novel by Stephen King, which was actually very good, and had a very "Bladerunner" sort of vibe to it. I can enjoy this film a film on its own for its pure 80's charm and over the-topness. Basically the same reason why I love films like Commando and True Lies because both have a similar tone to this one. Literally the only thing this film has in common with the novel of the same title is the title itself, the name of the main character, the fact that it takes place in the future, and that's about it. In the book, Richards was pursued across the entire country, but he could go where he pleased, he wasn't confined to an arena like in this film. The Running Man show itself had sort of a gameshow like vibe to it, but the film makers here obviously took that whole concept WAY too literally and they made it into an actual gameshow, even down to the way it was set-up, and had a person who hosted it. Which I think works for THIS particular film. Calling this an adaptation of the novel though is hardly even accurate though when you consider how loosely it follows the book. I don't know if you could technically call a newer version a remake if it followed the book more closely.
My biggest problem with this movie, even back in the day as a child when I saw the movie the first time, is that the stalkers look like villains and pretty ugly and disgusting ones but for the reality they live in and the show they are perceived as the heroes and they should look and at least act like them to some degree. A luxuary of writing that in 2020 is that I now have an example how I imagined that and this would be The Boys with their on camera off camera attitudes, so the guy with the chainsaw should rather look like some Bruce Campbell/Ash Williams look alike, someone you would root for and the others should be similar in on screen charisma. We, the audience know they are the bad guys and they can be also in the movie "off screen" for the show's audience. And on a personal note, I don't like when the bad guys go out in a pathetic way, this lessens the challenge the heroes had to overcome like with Ultron, Loki and Elizabeth Banks in that Power Rangers movie. You did not show all the deaths here but they all go out strange or pathethic, one self electricuted with his pants down. Back then this wasn't really common but just look how anime villains go down, so often they are still badass in death and this resonates to the heroes who overcame that challenge, this just feels so much more earned. These things aside, this movie is awesome and you should watch it...but in general Arnie really should have been dubbed, his accent isn't even a typical Austrian accent, they sound pretty awesome, Graz is right at the border to Slowenia, maybe they have their very own accent limited to that region which differs enormously to the rest of the country...
My only question about this movie is: WTF is with those outfits? I mean did they get them from the gay ice skating team, really wtf??? And I am gay, and I'm into Arnie, but not in that damn thing.
On the note of films where a game is a battle, have you guys covered Rollerball? The 1975 original with James Caan? Not the absolute rubbish 2002 movie of the same name.
Nobody ever mentions the security guard he was in predator red heat Conan the barbarian and most importantly mallrats and a horrible Russell Crowe movie
Was never a fan of The Running Man,I think it’s very generic and uninspired, the book was much better. Having said that I love Commando so who can tell? 🤷♂️
I 'm dissapointed that the humour doesnt work all that well here in what is a sci fi black comedy, for the humour it should have equalled ROBOCOP but it never does, also the point they are trying to make about extreme 80s capitalism, in the game show format, seem muted, this film needed more...strength & daring. its often said in filmic entertainment that the public don't like propaganda, BUT some of the most classic films especially in the sci fi genra, use social comment& it works - ROBOCOP, BAT MAN BEGINS, KONG SKULL ISLAND (a metaphor for Viet Nam) & BLACK PANTHER, WEST WORLD to name just a few
How did the most ridiculous part of this film - mapping Arnie’s face onto another person’s face - come true? I mean . . . who fucked reality so royally for DeepFakes to be predicted by The Running Man for God’s sake?
The parallels between the media control in this film and the current fascist UK Tory govt, and GOP/MAGA in the USA are quite striking and prophetic.......
THE RUNNING MAN should & could have been better, it's clearly a weak tea ROBOCOP. some of the black comedy works, most of it doesnt, I thought that the biggest problem was pacing, the film NEVER really slows down & so there's no contrasting of pacing, also an uninteresting typical 80s music score.
OMG IMAGINE THE GORE AND 3D FIGHT EFFECTS if this was remade today! Just as long as it's not PG, and those damn outfits go away. The trouble is, all these pretty boy action heroes couldn't really pull it off today. Like who would be cast? The Rock, maybe, buff Ryan Reynolds? Rock is big and not a douche, but we'd probably get someone like Zac Efron.
Commentator541 Zac Efron? Is he even still relevant? I can't recall the last time he was in something? What about Vin Diesel, Hugh Jackman, Chris Hemsworth, Jason Mamoa and Daniel Craig? If Trump ends up being President of the US 2017 could actually be like this movie, I'm not kidding. Trump reminds me of one of those arsehole US President's you see in 80's/90's movies like Escape From New York and Escape From LA and would expect to have running a rundown near future American with television game shows like The Running Man. Just watch any of his talks, he looks and sounds like a character from one of these types of movies, scary.
Notice how Richard Dawson says the only rebuttal to Arnie's "I'll be back" in movie history. "Only in a Re-run."
And he pays for it dearly.
Movies from the 80's always had a cool song playing during the end credits. You don't get that these days.
hell yeah, the closing song kicking in when Arnold walks out of the tunnel, i fucking stood up and cheered.
Oliver Sikes the great John parr
80's music was phenomenal in everything games , movies , and music. Too many timeless memorable scores.
Especially Arnie's movies.
Haha yeah right. A lot of them were weird movie songs, sometimes raps.
Arnold and Jesse were both Governors of States in the USA
When the "Deep Fakes" software was released, it immediately reminded me the facial video editing from this movie.
Also, just realized this video is 3 years old already. The Running Man is one of my favorites movies of that time.
The running man is a quality film, I never get bored of watching this. 1987 was a great year for Arnie, predator and the running man classic's
"You remember that earthquake, don't you Arnie?" "Fuck you!"
One of my favorite movies and one of my favorite books. The story in the book is so much better than the story in the movie, it deserves its own movie. Y'all have a badass day 🤘🍻🤘
In terms of one-liners, this movie is Arnie's best :P
Now that hit the spot! ;)
Don’t forget to send me a copy.
Everytime I hear the Intro I just wish everyday was 1987 , great movies ( practical effects and smart minimal CGI use ), great games , great technology , great music ,

On a very depressing note. The actor that played Dynamo passed away a few months after filming ended because of heart failure at only 34. He was a very versatile man. He was an actor, wrestler, opera singer and he studied computer science at MIT! Sad that such a talented person had to go so soon.
That is sad, his name is Erland van Lidth. But, he did so many awesome things!
THAT guy was 34? I'm sorry for his passing, likewise, I'm so thankful for my health - I'm in GREAT condition when compared to that
He was in Alone In The Dark another one of my sentimental 80's favourite slasher thriller movies
@Duckie Alexander He was also in Stir Crazy with Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor.
That's the thing about 80s movies for me, sure they have some dated and cheesy moments, but *_that's_* what makes them fun for me. GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY
was completely scripted
I grew up with Sky Movies in the early 1990s so yeah, The Running Man was part of that, see also...
Cherry 2000, The RoboCop Trilogy, They Live, Commando, Raw Deal, The Terminator, the Mad Max Trilogy, Demolition Man, Total Recall, The Gremlins Duology, My Stepmother Is An Alien.
I remember I wanted to see it in the cinema for my birthday but I wasn't allowed to, I was 8 at the time :)
25:25 They also both became governors of U.S. states.
From 80s action packed films to governors, 2 of em!....holy crap how time has flown by
i didn't know me and ian had the same childhood
Haven't seen this in years. I think I just recognized the lawyer with the pen in his back. He was the crazy Mohel from Seinfeld!
Love the way you edit your reviews, your facial reactions feel as if you were looking the final version of yourselves, along with us.
Watched it last night it's still awesome and reminds us all never to trust the BBC 😉
I can remember seeing this movie in a drive in theater when I was a kid. Man I am getting old.
The eating the contract one liner is the best Arnold one liner ever. It’s so badass.
I always thought Maria Conchita Alonso looked hot in the Running Man outfit.
theres not much she doesnt look hot in :))
I was a big Arnie fan, also kid of the 80's....still miss Saturday morning cartoons!
24:00 87? Looker did it in 1981!
Underrated Arnold movie.
Dynamo was played by Erland Van Lidth, who had a good voice as he also sang in Stir Crazy, the Gene Wilder/Richard Pryor prison comedy
Reminds me of Rollerball a bit.Can you do a review on that one please?
Yves S -Rollerball is one of my favorite movies, as well.
this movie is a classic of the 80s , great video
The Running Man is awesome. I love it. But i also cant help but think what Paul Verhoeven would have done with it - the social satire of the film is right up his alley.
Been binge watching these reviews, love it guys!
Before *Squid Game,* there was *The Running Man, the Original Squid Game.*
This film and the amazing game, for Megadrive 2 (genesis for the yanks), 'Super Smash TV' were staples of my childhood. That game always felt like an unofficial companion piece to this film.
Covid-19 is a more absurd TV show than anything I've seen in a movie.
DON ILD TRUMP Sr
turned AMERICA into a
FAKE REALITY SHOW
You guys are awsome
Please review Rollerball.
Honestly I didnt realise there was a book! I thought this was a remake (and "themed" version) of the French movie - "prize of peril"..........wow
Indeed " le prix du danger" . Writen by Robert Sheckley. Made in 1983.
Very gritty movie. But exact same concept.
love your reviews video, came upon ur channel accidentally but i love ur show n think more people should watch it.
keep up the great work.
Nice review guys. I agree with you both about this movie. I like the commercials, especially Captain Freedom's workout but I do think that Robocop's commercials are funnier and better quality.
No pun intended but Arnie went on a run of several classic films during this time.
Outside of the Terminator, this is my favorite Arnold movie. I read the book last year.
Sadly there are no tv show in this style of gladiatorian games when I write this comment in 2019, nor the technology, I´m disapointed now! xD
I love Arnold his one liners are gold LMAO I could watch Arnold movies all day.
Fireball is played by NFL Hall of Fame running back Jim Brown
Guys you gotta do something I’m half way through the review and I’ve been onslaughted by 15 ads.
RINNING MAN was the first modern Gladiator film (since 1975s DEATH RACE 2000 any way_ that never equalled the odd popularity of - HUNGER GAMES or...MAZE RUNNER setting a trend for these kind of films.
PREDATOR 1987 :
ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER
JESSE VENTURA
SVEN OLE THORSEN
PREDATOR 2 :
MARIA CONCHITA ALONSO
The running Man is more relatable today. I would get behind a remake with more of a reality TV theme.
Absolute Classic!
Damn, Gary...I thought your shirt said RETRD and couldn't imagine why you were wearing it.
Love movies from this era so much, there like video game movies, just so much fun.
Solid film, though definetly not up to the standard of Predator or Total Recall. I have always felt that in the hands of a Paul Verhoeven, this film could have been a real classic! Arnie had been watching too many James Bond, Clint Eastwood films at this point, its likely to have been his idea to do the one line gags
This reminds me so of the german movie "The Game of millions" from 1970 - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Das_Millionenspiel
fun fact
the dancers are
real dancers
not actresses
Andrew Blanchard choreographed by Paula Abdul

yep
What an awesome off color shirt!

Iain, when you made your comment about a bootleg Fleetwood Mac cassette tape, were you aware that Mick Fleetwood played the part of the rebel leader?
I'm surprised they don't mention Arnold with a beard. That was my first reaction with this movie early on. Like holy shit, Arnold has, a beard!!! What the fuck!!!!
We do have MMA cage fighting....that's pretty close....
Have you guys ever heard of the film, "Witness To The Execution?"
08:45
THE GUARD SEEMED LIKE
HE WAS TRYING TO
DEACTIVATE THE FIELD
he was trying to keep it activated, the geek guy prisoner was trying to deactivate it
I'd read this Stephen King story, and hated this movie because of it. Had it just been it's own story, I'd have been with it. Not a bad cheesy 80s actioner.
Classic Arnie 80s cheese and biscuits!
i love almost all the things you reviewd
Please mate: give us the 34 oneliners from arnie..
Arnold is funny in this one. Hey light head over here. Haha. I also like the tvs they are all flat screen in this movie
This movie is kinda dated, These days nobody i know watches TV. Just uses the Internet, reality TV is dead.

Mr Zeus Please God no.
Good review, Great movie.
I DON'T DO REQUESTS!
They were only 3 years off with the Police state...

Whitman, price and hadad the lucky winners of the 1 season of the running man 🏃
Alexj Murphy No, season 1's losers
*Turn Up!*
My only question about this movie is: WTF is with those outfits? I mean did they get them from the gay ice skating team, really wtf??? And I am gay, and I'm into Arnie, but not in that damn thing.
Spandex was king back in the 80s.
Loved this movie, so funny and true :) !
200 dollars on Richards
No the soldiers are combatants not civilians.
Love this movie. i hope they dont ruin it with some shitty remake
+Micky Keenan (neville) That WILL happen
:(
They did, it was called The Hunger Games.
On the note of films where a game is a battle, have you guys covered Rollerball? The 1975 original with James Caan? Not the absolute rubbish 2002 movie of the same name.
SNES Super Smash TV. That is all.
Arnold is numero uno

What is the number one game show in the whole wide world!
/Reaches Mic out over the audience.
Critical Mass Ben Richards- well that hit the spot
This movie was made from someone fantasy of seeing Schwarzenegger in tight lycra. 😅
Nobody ever mentions the security guard he was in predator red heat Conan the barbarian and most importantly mallrats and a horrible Russell Crowe movie
God the woman of the 80s was hot 🥵

The parallels between the media control in this film and the current fascist UK Tory govt, and GOP/MAGA in the USA are quite striking and prophetic.......

OMG IMAGINE THE GORE AND 3D FIGHT EFFECTS if this was remade today! Just as long as it's not PG, and those damn outfits go away. Hillary lives, you sleep. That's an 80s movie that she represents
you can take off the tin foil hat now.
Would be awesome if someone would put trump in that rocket sled from the running man and see him crash
Saw it when it came out. It was a pretty weak Arnold effort. Not highly thought of at the time.
🐐🐐
God the movies in the 80s were awsome 😃 not like the woke trash of 2020 🤮
Movies today have gotta be 49/50 bad!
Easy on the language please.
