I've said it before and I'll say it again... this channel is deeply undersubscribed, but I'm very thankful that Gary and Ian put their hearts and souls into these reviews.
Great review boys...The Ring 2002 is one of the few Hollywood remakes of Japanese/Korean horror movies which I reckon stands up well to the original. I thought likes of The Grudge, Shutter and The Eye were poor compared to the Asian version's.
See, I went the other way, seeing _'The Grudge'_ and _'Ju-on'_ as being closer than _'The Ring'_ was to _'Ringu'_ 🤷🏻♀️ It's possible that I might need to go rewatch them all 😄
Just found you guys a couple days ago and have been binging your channel since. I do not understand why you guys don't even have 50k subs, you're doing a great job. Good, spot on and fair reviews without all the fake nonsense about all the movies I love. As for "The Ring vs. Ringu", I think this is a rare case where a remake is significantly better than the original. I have seen The Ring first back then, and all these years heard how "so much better and scarier Ringu is", so I watched it finally and wonder if I watched the same movie as these people. From overall production quality all the way to the soundtrack, effects and story alterations, and perhaps most importantly, actual horror, The Ring is absolutely superior. It also dives way deeper into the characters, where Ringu leaves too many things untouched, I feel.
I think that building a cabin atop of an old well that you want to keep hidden is actually a brilliant idea. It is creepy as hell. And it is clearly taken from a horror The Changeling-a nice nod to a horror classic. And I agree," less is more" sometimes. But in case of nearly all japanese horrors the "less" is often so glaringly visible that it makes those movies almost hard to watch.
I've been watching horror movies for over 40 years, and I can honestly say that the last 5 minutes of Ringu is the most terrifying thing I've ever seen. It took me three attempts to get through it without switching the telly off. I kid you not!!!
One of my all time favourites, and I didn't mind the remake either. The actress who portrays Sadako, the first time I saw her moving across the floor, it was just about the creepiest thing I'd seen for a long time!
Oooh awesome, glad to see this one go up! Had no idea Ringu was inspired by Poltergeist, but I can definitely see it. Also: loving the Knightmare shirt, Gary! 😆
Nobody infects the screen more with dredd than Japenese horror, sometimes I can go days after watching a J horror and still get that eery sense of unease. Great review as always boys ✌️
When you said your favorite color was green, and it changed. I instantly thought of the scene from: "In the Mouth of Madness"! Except the color was blue in that.
She's called yurei - inspired by an artists dead wife - he woke up in the night with her ghost floating above him: ratty black hair, corpse white skin and white funeral dress. The image never left him 💀👀
These movies have elements that worked great back then, the videotape format was common for movies, the bizarre creepy spirit, the pressure of the time limit, and both use their own cultures and style of filmmaking to express many things. Japanese horror films are very good, and the ring made people and Hollywood get interested in Japanese horror productions.
I saw this on channel 4 in 2001 in the early morning one night. I knew nothing about (no internet) and it... Blew. My. Mind. I had no idea that ending was a thing. One of the greatest film moments of my life. Up there with the ending of Alien and Once Upon a Time in the West, and a few others.
Once Upon a Time in the West...100% agree, what a great western that was. And the late, great Charles Bronson even made playing an harmonica look tough.
Ringu intially disappointed me: I really expected it to be a lot scarier but, I've found it actually more terrifying with every viewing ... and I have no idea how that works but, I'm no brain surgeon I suppose ...
Another entertaining review fellas. Have to say Ringu japanese version is my fave ( and to Iain's recollection the first movie was released in North America in B/W I have a copy of it on vhs)
Great reviews. The sickly green was a huge thing back in the 00s no which started with Saw. I got instantly tired with cursed objects that Japan was pumping out. Out of all the cursed movies from south East Asian, the 2002 South Korean film called, Phone was surprisingly good, & the one thing that stood out in that film was the child. She was unhinged.
I remember watching a pirate copy when it first came out, and got to the bit where the phone would ring, and you'd be dead seven days later.........my dad picked that exact moment to phone me, and I almost crapped myself lol
the american ring (1), really reminded me of a visit to the silent hill games. the deleted footage was also very good, and should have been left in the film.
I always creep out @ how Samara flickers like static & then out of nowhere advances a few feet fwd scared the Shit out've me!!! Great review guys!!!! \w/
Hiroyuki Sanada is an awesome actor he was in the wolverine, Avengers endgame, Army of the dead and of course he played scorpion in the new mortal kombat movie. He has an MBE that makes him more cool
Thanks for this review of both movies. I had the same experience as Gary and Ian, I saw Ringu for the first time on VHS tape late at night. I had never seen a Japanese movie before, and I remember it was hard to follow because of the language barrier and the culture shock ...also the lack of sleep worked ;-). But it was dreadfully scary, the concept of dying of fear with a frozen scream on your face had me question the movie all throughout; How do you die with a face like that? How?? And the long and dragging scene when the husband and wife were emptying the well, it worked for me. That loathsomely slow sequence had put me totally off guard. When I thought they succeeded in putting the soul of Sadako to rest, I felt disappointed in a way, because I thought I was not going to get my answer. But then suddenly the sharp music is back and an uncalled for scene starts. The end of this movie .... well that's how. It was an unforgettable experience.
Fantastic review as always lads love the depth you both provide, Ive been playing a shitload of Dead by Daylight lately and getting chased around by sadako is alot of fun.
I love Ringu, the first time i watched that was late at night all alone in my room, watching Sadako move as if every bone in her body is breaking...that really left an impression on me! As for The Ring, i'm really not that keen on this to be honest, Samara looks like a Special Effect, and that absolutely ruins her whole presence for me. Ringu is a Mystery Psychological Horror masterpiece, whereas The Ring is a Psychological Drama with underpins of Horror. Ringu 10/10 The Ring 6/10 Great review guys 👍
Dunno about anyone else, but when I was a kid I would sometimes daydream about media, mostly films, doing stuff it wasn’t supposed to. Like, watching movies and suddenly the characters would break the fourth wall or the camera would pan over to something it never had before. Shit like that. So the premise of The Ring does speak to some long dormant fear of mine. But you know what? Pale lady with long black hair? I would 🙄
Well the kids were in the cabin. And they were trying to record a football game. And that's how it happened they recorded her memories and she burned them onto the tape
Never liked the US version, I just think it lacks the atmosphere of the Japanese version. Plus the Sadako crawling from the TV was far creepier in the original
I've always much preferred the remake if for no other reason than it's such a wonderfully gloomy film that's absolutely slathered in rain. Not enough movies are rainy like that. Also Naomi Watts. Love her.
This is one of the few instances where the US remake is better than the Japanese original. The US studios usually destroy the tension, but in this case I think they actually enhanced it.
If you continue with the trend of comparing the original and remake, perhaps you could review Harakiri. The original is a perfect film, Top 10 all time, and the remake does some really interesting changes.
@@tjenahoj Yep. Masaki Kobayashi made the original and Takashi Miike directed the more recent remake. It's probably Miike's best film. That, or The Bird People in China; which is my favourite.
this is fantastic sir!!! I saw the USA version first and rather enjoyed it (funnily enough it felt japanese) I just didnt like the lead actress. However the ending of "make a copy" felt rather laughable...........
The ending leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I'm assuming the plan is that Rachel will show the tape to someone in order to spare her son's life; the curse or virus has to be passed on to another person. Also, I don't see how the curse has a condition that includes this VCR copying business. If you watch the tape but then make a copy, you won't be doomed within a week. Frankly the American movie always seems to be coming to an end too many times and then we have even more plot to go through. It's not mentally exhausting but it does induce eye rolling. I like the movie as rule-- especially the score by Hans Zimmer; the film is just a bit flawed. Its atmosphere and creepiness won me over.
Japanese version is so much more creepier. The american version sadly relies too much on Jumpscares. But that opening scene in the American version is scary as hell
Funnily enough, the original novel is more rooted in Sci-Fi than supernatural horror. If I remember correctly, Sadako is for lack of a better term, a technological virus constrained inside a video tape. Hell the original Japanese TV sequel movie - Rasen - takes a lot of those concepts even further, some into some weird cuckoo lala-land territory.
I thought both films were "Ok." I'm more of a fan of JU-ON (A.K.A The Grudge). The original Ring-U was better in my opinion though. The sequels were shit, I just stick to the original and American remake. Also, The Ring from 2017 was even worse! In fact, it bombed so hard future plans for sequels were cancelled. Good. Like I said, Just watch the original and 2002 American remake. But I highly recommend the Japanese original.
Great review. For me the original Ring is far superior, the re-make tries to explain too much for my liking, as Gary says the green filter is off putting for me. That said the re-make isnt a bad film just not as good as the Japanese original. Just like the Grudge et al. Also the Knightmare t-shirt is awesome Treguard, I mean Gary.
One of the rare times were Hollywood made a good remake of foreign horror. The original J-horror “Ringu” is a classic & like most A-horror, very creepy. It’s a lesson in “less is more” horror. American version is a masterpiece. Well-paced,beautifully shot, more entertaining, with better visual effects, better music, better lighting, darker atmosphere. Love this channel! Great review guys 👍
There was also a South Korean remake of the film called The Ring Virus in 1999.
Funniest thing is I actually liked that one more than these too. 😅
Keep up the great videos guys! 👊
Great video, guys! Love these movies!

The soundtrack is awesome.
