  • So today, we will be reviewing, yet another, Coolina Schmoolina Chef Knife. This is the Coolina Altomino Chef Knife. Many have asked me to review more of their knives. You guys ask, and I will do my best to come through!
    Can't say I am very pleased with this one either. Check out the video to see why.
    Again, if you are looking for a better handmade cleaver. I still recommend the DaoVua Kiri Cleaver:

    100% honesty is the best types of review one can give, and yours is just that type. I appreciate the reviews you make especially how you unselfishly spend your own money to give us informatin on the products. So glad I found this channel wish it all the best to grow. Godbless!
    Also if ever you read this i just want to make a suggestion to review kamikoto knives if possible, seems that there have been shady things about there product. Sorry for the long post.

    I purchased the knives in a buy 2-get-2 free add. They all showed up within the time advertised. My 4 knives...NONE of them showed the handle issues yours did. So far they are incredible... Maybe I will update later with negative appraisals but in week one they are incredible. Of course I know I spent ~$50 per knife and I do not expect a perfect life-long knife for generational hand down... But it is sharp...well balanced...the handle is of good size and is very smooth...and overall it is the tool I wanted at the correct price point.

      You have to spend $200 to get the $50/per knife price. Otherwise it's $100-$120 per knife. Their sale pricing verifies they can still turn a good profit at $50/per knife - AKA. Their knives aren't worth $100+.

      You have to be meticulous about carbon steel. If you like using a knife, setting it down and walking away, then you need stainless steel. I have two carbon steel knives, one is a bushcrafter in 01 tool steel, the other is a Bunka with a blue carbon steel edge. I've been using the Bunka for a good three years with no rust issues. But I'm OCD about washing and drying both knives right away. ...especially after chopping onions...

    • @bigtrickbandit3125
      @bigtrickbandit3125 Рік тому

      @@craigjohnchronicles2504 that makes sense that is probably what I did wrong was not washing it right away!I also noticed the tang was super wavy as well though and was like holy lord a 100 bucks this thing should be pretty pristine,but then again maybe I was expecting to much!

    • @craigjohnchronicles2504
      @craigjohnchronicles2504 Рік тому

      @@bigtrickbandit3125 - Yeah. Wavey tang is junk. Even $20 knives have flat/straight tangs, spines and edges. Considering more than one YTer has shown the crappy production level of these knives, it's pretty safe to say Coolina is crap, unless you're lucky enough to get a good copy. ...but you shouldn't be buying on a "hope and a prayer".
      Their sale of 4-knives for $200 ($50/per knife), while likely still turning a sizable profit me thinks, speaks volumes.

    @Between Two Forks All in all I very much agree with you. Thank you for taking the time to put together this video.
    I would agree and disagree with you on a couple of topics, if you don't mind me weighing in on your channel.
    1. The fact that it is made in China. I chatted with the manufacturer too and for the three knives I bought they are of Slovenian design but manufactured in China. The materials are resourced (especially the wood handles) from many countries and how would anyone really know that?. It makes every knife unique. However, unique is nice but I feel taken because it's really just mass produced China junk.
    2. Your shipping issue must be an individual problem because my 3 were spotless and in perfect condition and were Christmas gifts.
    3. They are supposedly hand forged. Kind of gives you the impression of some blacksmith hammering away on an anvil. (but I doubt it)
    4. I didn't have any rust but plenty of pitting in the steel, which looks uber rugged but if not maintained will definitely rust if not washed and oiled regularly. Pitting also can leave "nooks" and "crannies" for bacteria to build on if not thoroughly washed.
    5. Sharp as hell! It rips through meat like a ninja.
    6. Advertisements are a bit misleading and you touched on many of the points.
    7. *** Sheaths that come with... if you don't replace the factory installed plastic guards, the blade will shred the canvas stitching.
    8. I was hoping instead of the hands free tomato slice you'd demonstrate a close shave without Barbasol. LOL
    9. The rivets are solid and the ergonomic design of the handle feels "way cool" in your hand. Like putting on new sneakers for the first time.
    It's macho, looks badass, works great for taking apart game or if you are a pernil connoisseur (pork shoulder/butt) you will look like a viking. In short I agree, for the price, I'd suggest spending a little more and get a more pro knife to do the job with less imperfections and drawbacks.
    Thanks again Between! Rock that kitchen.

    What a coolina knife is not- Shun, Wusthof, etc. It is a cave man knife that is sharp (for a while) that is made in a Chinese sweat shop. Many companies/brands for many different products out there lie about made "made in China" by saying "internationally sourced" because of the fact people do not want Chinese crap sold to the world market, and I am one of those. I did buy one, the Kampeni, and it did not have the rust, bent spine or uneven bevel, it was actually pretty well finished. However, it will need to be sharpened often and will end up in my camp kit covered in bee's wax, that's about what it is good for.
    The tomato test.. LOL

    Isn't the whole purpose of the Coolina design is that of the rustic, ancient, hand made look, etc. These knives are not for the professional chef, or even practical in a commercial environment, etc. This is for the caveman wannabe, fire and brimstone, cutting shallots on a tree trunk in the middle of the boonies to throw in a big old cast iron skillet with chunks of meat, etc. It just boils down to "looks cool" which is probably why it's named "Cool-ina"

      @@BetweenTwoForks the brand of these knives indicates that it is stainless steel, but after a while, traces of oxidation appear on these knives, so I assume that the composition contains a slightly higher percentage of carbon steel than in the usual composition of stainless steel u can said about that in your review in case. Yeaaaah, you should probably look at most of the shit you own in your home. If you're going to be a political freak fine, but try not to look stupid doing it. You did not even look before buying so that says something about you and I think it is all for show. If you felt that strongly about that kind of thing, I kind of think you would pay more attention to what you buy and do.
