I loved Judy, and Lorna seems, from every interview I've seen with her to be just as loving and kind and funny and down to earth as her mother. To me, that, in and of itself speaks volumes as to Judy's character and who she truly was as a person.
Mort didn't say she was the greatest singer of the century, he said the greatest talent of the century. Mort was absolutely correct. Judy could do it all. SING, DANCE, ACT- COMEDY, DRAMA. She probably would have made a great director, and writer, and producer. I wouldn't be surprised.
I have been a devoted fan since before I could talk from what my parents have told me.. I was only 2 years old when she died, and am now 47. I have spent my life reading every book, buying every album, watching every movie, tv special and interview about Judy Garland that I can get my hands on.I was crying by the time this interview ended. I have no rational explanation why Judy Garland touches my heart so, but she always has, and she always will.
I remember seeing Judy Garland perform "live" on The Hollywood Palace". I had seen her as a child in Wizard of Oz which was only on once a year back then. When I saw her on Hollywood Palace, I was stunned at her showmanship live even though her voice was cracking from the drugs, drinks, cigarettes..she still belted out her songs and hit the big notes..she made you sit there with anticipation of not knowing if she could make it through the song..but of course she could..she was Judy!
Mickey was wrong about their first movie together, it was Thoroughbreds don't Cry, Ann Miller was wrong about Judy and Deanna. They were both under contract to M.G.M. and the Studio decided they didn't have enough work for two teenage girls. Mayer wanted to keep Deanna, and everybody else wanted to keep Judy. After arguing back and forth, Judy's side won and Deanna was released. I wonder if Judy's life would have been entirely different had they released Judy instead of Deanna.
Terry Grant Ann Miller and her different stories. On one interview she said Judy would be late and tell a couple of stories or jokes, make people laugh, and everything was fine. Her other story about Judy being late was she was so prepared that they got finished on time, so nobody stayed mad at her. These two stories came from Ann Miller herself, SO your sarcasm really isn’t appropriate and certainly not needed Mr. Dork.

The only time Fred Astaire was upstaged was when Judy Garland sang a duo with him in Easter Parade in "We're a couple of Swells". She is magnificient and outshines Astaire. A feat no one else ever accomplished.
BJ White Astaire is white tie and tails, he was truly out of his element. Judy just blew his doors off in that number, fortunately, because most are watching Judy instead of Fred they don’t notice how boring and out of place he is. A Couple of Swells is a vaudeville type number, where the performers ham it up and over exaggerate almost every move. Score Fred gets a D and Judy gets an A+. Considering that Fred got 2 huge production numbers and Judy did get any, it’s Amazing that she still swiped the movie.
Fred was white tie and tails. He was not blacked out teeth, five o'clock shadow, worn out suit and shoes, and someone who wallows around on the floor. Judy on the other hand looked right at home doing the tramp/hobo routine. She loved doing things like that. As a matter of fact, I believe she took that tramp outfit with her when she left Metro. Judy wasn't a one trick pony, she could do IT ALL. I've heard that Judy was highly intelligent, people often said that she was the smartest and funniest person they ever knew. You could use the word Cosmopolitan to help describe Judy. When it came to show business, she was probably the most well rounded/could do anything/everything performer that ever lived. Movies: Drama, Comedy, Obviously Musicals. She unbelievable in Concerts, and Nightclubs, how about Radio, she again did Comedy roles, Dramatic roles, and appeared on a ton of musical variety shows. She did so many of Bings radio shows. everyone thought she was a regular. Same with Bob Hopes shows. Judy was without a doubt, the most talented, and greatest entertainer that ever lived. She could do it all. I truly believe only God has touched more people than Judy.
Judy Garland inspired me to become an actress she was so beautiful and very talented sometimes I feel her energy while I'm performing on stage and she talks to me in some dreams she's watching and guiding me in my acting career she's always going to have a special place in my heart forever. There are times when I see one of her films or specials I feel I can hardly bare her being gone, so I will love her speak well of her and watch her over and over. Thank heaven she can still be seen . She was only 10 years older than me so I have been honored and privileged to have her in my life for many years. In PIRATE Judy was hysterical. I really get laughing hard in that one. How frustrated she got with Gene Kelly’s character and her actions were so spontaneous and hilarious. She tickles me pink in a lot of films but PIRATE shows real humor and spontaneity. It’s hard to pick a favorite film. I’ve seen everyone of them. What a STAR.!!!!!
I think it was a good script but Renee didn't look or sound like her at all. Liza Minnelli is against it and I think Mickey would have been too. It was particularly unfair to him. Get a set of DVDs of The Judy Garland Show and watch those instead.

Judy's voice at the end was not what it once was, it would have been strange if she lipped sung her songs. Tears filled the audience as the movie played on. So sad, however, Judy Garland was one of the greatest singers and entertainers. So much talent in one small body. Maybe too much.
I picked Renee to win, and she did, deservedly. She was impressive. It doesn't make up for the academies blatant mishap, in not giving it to Garland for A Star is Born. But, it certainly helps a little. As did Lizas' winning it for Cabaret.
*Mr. Balloffur* Watch some videos of Eleanor Powell from her movie career. She took the crown as the best dancer in the world... But Ann Miller had a longer career, because Ms Powell retired after her son was born. She wanted to focus on motherhood as her mother never was able to do while supporting her young daughter. Ann Miller's husband at the time she got pregnant beat her until she miscarried. Eleanor Powell's husband started tom-catting around once his wife became a mother. Neither woman won in the matrimonial sweepstakes. They ended up with childish men who wanted to be the envy of all the other men in the world for having the sexiest wife in he world. That's Hollywood for you. (P.S., Hollywood's _cognoscenti_ did not consider Judy Garland to be beautiful or even pretty... They didn't have a clue among the lot of them.)
She was so incredibly talented. There will never be another Judy. I hate that she had such a hard life starting at such a young age and her mother pushing her so hard, giving her uppers she’d have the energy to perform and downers so she could sleep. And then MGM got in on the drug routine and just generally treated her badly, saying she was fat, which she wasn’t and putting her on that ridiculous diet of chicken broth, a piece of lettuce, black coffee, and 2-3 packs of cigarettes to smoke each day to help curb her appetite. And having people follow her around and spy on her for the studio in case she was eating or drinking something that wasn’t on the diet. If she got caught, the spies would tell the studio. I don’t know what the studio did if that happened, but I can imagine that it wasn’t pleasant. And Mickey Rooney. I’m so glad she had him for a friend. Whenever Mickey speaks of Judy, you can feel that love they had and the pain that her death caused him. I hope they’re singing and dancing around Heaven now.
Yup, I heard about that. I plan to watch a true story movie called Judy Garland on Netflix tonight. I felt sad for her and the children. She went through hell times with stupid people of MSG and her ex-husbands/ her mother with no heart too!!! Her mother had a heart attacked, and died. Judy was so patient with her mother... her mother reminds me of my birth mother who attempted to murder me by giving me heroin and all... She learned it from my birth father Charles. He attempted to murder his young brother Jon's wife during she was pregnant with my cousin Wendi..that time Wendi's older sister Tammi was a kid... Judy Garland reminded me of my mom, beautiful and smart, and I adored her growing up, but mental illness took over and tried to destroyed her, then life became hard for us all. But like Lorna said, I still appreciate her as my mom.

Larry King was so rude, stating that it had been thirty years since Lorna's mother had passed as if that makes missing her any different. Terrible interviewer!
He brought up the talking point so Lorna could say what she said... it never goes away. Many people who have not gone through it do not realize that when a loved one is lost, the grief never fades, and you often have to live with it daily for the rest of your life... so, in my opinion, Larry did good.
Mort told me great stories about Judy . He was in awe of her talent, also he adored her as a person! Mort oddly enough , married a singer named Judy, Delightful woman.

Ann Miller is a matter of taste. I don't like her, never have. And I've said it here, I don't know we're Miller got that story, but, I isn't true. Mickey didn't remember what was the first movie they made together, I do, it was called THROUGH- BREADS DON'T CRY IN 1937. JUDY GOT TOP BILLING. When people get older, their memory's seem to go. As did Mickeys, and Ann's. I hate to beat people over their heads with the truth, but, Anna story is not true, and neither is Mickeys.
Impossible. Not on Ann Millers very best day and Judy's very worst day. Ann Miller was a great dancer, but, I'll take Eleanor Powell. She was much more athletic then Ms.Miller. There was some reason why Ms.Miller never became a tier one performer.
I don’t know if the Wizard of Oz was considered a failure because it didn’t make money when it was released. But, it wasn’t a total failure because, it did well at the box-office. But, the movie was the most expensive movie made (I think in history). It ran way over budget, with the replacement of Buddy Ebsen as the Tin Man, after a months shooting, Margaret Hamilton having to take time off because of her burns, and Judy getting Pneumonia. So they were way over budget.
Beautiful Margret O'Brien - hidden by Larry King, I didn't even realize she was there. King is, indeed, an annoying personality. Not on this show, but sometimes he can be good at his work. I'd never seen Lorna Luft before - she'd have made her glorious mother proud.

Ann Miller comments about Judy are mostly faults. Her story about Deanna Durbin and Judy just isn’t true. Other comments about her being late, one story was she wasn’t prepared, and her other story was although she was always late we still finished on time because she was so well prepared. And that’s the truth because I heard both interviews.
At my work, I got chatting with some customers. We got talking about the new cover "Over the Rainbow" on the ukulele. I said it was a nice song, but the words were wrong, and I had grown up hearing Judy Garland singing it. The looked at me blankly. I asked if they had ever heard of Judy Garland. Two had NEVER HEARD of her. The third one had heard the name, but didn't know who she was. :(
She was a supreme stylist firstly and this combined with a knowledge of what it means to be a `star` and how to make it work made Judy Garland the ikon of the 20th century. I saw her once in person in the late 50s when she played Westchester County. I went backstage and met her..got a dressing down for not waiting in front with the others. They called her `One Take Judy` and told her to `googie` her eyes. It all worked...supremely.
Heartbreaking. None of them got to give their full reminiscences about her, with that old iguana interrupting and picking random flies off the table with his tongue.
I can't stand Larry King as an interviewer. He interrupts, he's cold and impersonal, he doesn't validate anything anyone says. Judy Garland was a much beloved person and these are people who knew and loved her intimately but he just blew right over them and saw her as a media product just like Judy was treated most of her life.

Boy you got that right. I was just listening to the first 10 minutes of this interview and was appalled at his behavior. These were close friends the daughter Mickey Rooney and to jump from one topic to suddenly talking about her difficult years. I can't stand the way he cuts people off. If he allowed a natural flow between these people it would have been a really beautiful tribute to Judy Garland. But I agree with you completely his treatment of this interview was really poor.

What I don't like about Lorna was that in the book she made her father Syd seemed a nice guy but he wasn't because of him Judy was broke and living from the charity of some of her friends. Unbelievable that in her last years Judy had nothing and had to rely on the kindness of friends to just have a place to sleep... after makeing millions and millions of dollars for all those studios. I don’t think it was lack of intelligence on Judy’s part; she was very smart. But when it came to finances and business she was naive and too trusting of others to take care of that side of things.

She started there as a young girl, and she was an investment, like a property. The studio ran their lives. Judy probably never learned about money, because she didn't have to. The money came pouring in and was always there -- till it wasn't! And when it wasn't Judy was struggling with that, as well as physical/emotional problems.

Yes - a bad interviewer that needs some lessons in decency. He appears to have very few qualities to endorse himself as an interviewer of any note or charm.
You're right that he could be like that. And yet he was replaced by an obsequious jerk (forget his name) who was FAR worse, trying to make the show only about himself and often not even civil to people who weren't the big stars he could suck up to disgustingly.
These people are remembering insignificant things that were happening to other people while they were busy with their own lives 63 to 65 years earlier. Rooney, though he was a great juvenile talent, became a show-biz robot incapable of saying anything that wasn't stereotypical show-biz tripe. Tony Curtis once said kissing Marilyn Monroe was like kissing Hitler, then spent the rest of his life denying he ever said it. I love Judy's talent and her life story -- I saw her live at the Palace -- but no other performer would say anything negative about her if they could possibly avoid it. That's ShowBiz!!!
During the time of Mickey and Judy your money was taken or used by parents. When you don't have someone to keep you safe and guidance from the people who see you only as a product. A money maker for them its going to be hard to make the right choices.
Who doesn't miss Judy? Lorna makes me tear up describing her mom. Judy will never be replaced nor will anyone ever compare to her.

When Lorna said Judy sang from her soul, I think that really sums it up. At the end when Lorna, Mickey and Ann are in tears, I feel the same emotion.
Judy Garland was my most favorite actress, she was talented on screen and one of the best singers will ever be. God bless her.
Any show, clip, interview containing information about Judy Garland, acknowledging her brilliant talent, humor, and stamina, is always welcomed by me. Her acting was underrated and should be remembered as first class, and her singing and deliver will be known as one of the best of the 20th century, no doubt. Thank you for posting this interview. I'm still a fan and always will be.
Spencers Tracy considered her to be 1 of the top 5 greatest actors in show business history. And she will always be the greatest entertainer EVER PERIOD.
In PIRATE Judy was hysterical. I really get laughing hard in that one. How frustrated she got with Gene Kelly’s character and her actions were so spontaneous and hilarious. She tickles me pink in a lot of films but PIRATE shows real humor and spontaneity. It’s hard to pick a favorite film. I’ve seen everyone of them. What a STAR.!!!!!
I loved the movie Judy with Renee Zellweger myself and I hope she wins her second Academy Award for it.

I think it was a good script but Renee didn't look or sound like her at all. Liza Minnelli is against it and I think Mickey would have been too. It was particularly unfair to him. Get a set of DVDs of The Judy Garland Show and watch those instead.
@@jaynekranc8607 This film was about the last years of her life with some flashbacks. Rene looked the part and her voice was acceptable. Judy's voice at the end was not what it once was, it would have been strange if she lipped sung her songs. Tears filled the audience as the movie played on. So sad, however, Judy Garland was one of the greatest singers and entertainers. So much talent in one small body. Maybe too much.
I picked Renee to win, and she did, deservedly. She was impressive. It doesn't make up for the academies blatant mishap, in not giving it to Garland for A Star is Born. But, it certainly helps a little. As did Lizas' winning it for Cabaret.

*Mr. Balloffur* Watch some videos of Eleanor Powell from her movie career. She took the crown as the best dancer in the world... But Ann Miller had a longer career, because Ms Powell retired after her son was born. She wanted to focus on motherhood as her mother never was able to do while supporting her young daughter. Ann Miller's husband at the time she got pregnant beat her until she miscarried. Eleanor Powell's husband started tom-catting around once his wife became a mother. Neither woman won in the matrimonial sweepstakes. They ended up with childish men who wanted to be the envy of all the other men in the world for having the sexiest wife in he world. That's Hollywood for you. (P.S., Hollywood's _cognoscenti_ did not consider Judy Garland to be beautiful or even pretty... They didn't have a clue among the lot of them.)

I hate that she had such a hard life starting at such a young age and her mother pushing her so hard, giving her uppers she’d have the energy to perform and downers so she could sleep. And then MGM got in on the drug routine and just generally treated her badly, saying she was fat, which she wasn’t and putting her on that ridiculous diet of chicken broth, a piece of lettuce, black coffee, and 2-3 packs of cigarettes to smoke each day to help curb her appetite. And having people follow her around and spy on her for the studio in case she was eating or drinking something that wasn’t on the diet. If she got caught, the spies would tell the studio. I don’t know what the studio did if that happened, but I can imagine that it wasn’t pleasant.
And Mickey Rooney. I’m so glad she had him for a friend. Whenever Mickey speaks of Judy, you can feel that love they had and the pain that her death caused him. I hope they’re singing and dancing around Heaven now.

Yup, I heard about that. I plan to watch a true story movie called Judy Garland on Netflix tonight. I felt sad for her and the children. She went through hell times with stupid people of MSG and her ex-husbands/ her mother with no heart too!!! Her mother had a heart attacked, and died. Judy was so patient with her mother... her mother reminds me of my birth mother who attempted to murder me by giving me heroin and all... She learned it from my birth father Charles. He attempted to murder his young brother Jon's wife during she was pregnant with my cousin Wendi..that time Wendi's older sister Tammi was a kid... Geez, Crazy birth families of mine....they are dead for years. Oh well
Her mom was responsible for a CHILD. MGM has other children who had parents that protected them so cannot blame MGM
?Judy's mother only cared about being the mother of a famous daughter. She loved the attention. The heck with what the Studio did to her, Mrs. Garland loved all the attention.

Judy Garland reminded me of my mom, beautiful and smart, and I adored her growing up, but mental illness took over and tried to destroyed her, then life became hard for us all. But like Lorna said, I still appreciate her as my mom.

Larry King was so rude, stating that it had been thirty years since Lorna's mother had passed as if that makes missing her any different. Terrible interviewer!
He brought up the talking point so Lorna could say what she said... it never goes away. Many people who have not gone through it do not realize that when a loved one is lost, the grief never fades, and you often have to live with it daily for the rest of your life... so, in my opinion, Larry did good.

On a side note, Ann Miller was AMAZING in Easter Parade. Her tap scene alone came dangerously close to stealing the picture from Judy.

Ann Miller is a matter of taste. I don't like her, never have. And I've said it here, I don't know we're Miller got that story, but, I isn't true. Mickey didn't remember what was the first movie they made together, I do, it was called THROUGH- BREADS DON'T CRY IN 1937. JUDY GOT TOP BILLING. When people get older, their memory's seem to go. As did Mickeys, and Ann's. I hate to beat people over their heads with the truth, but, Anna story is not true, and neither is Mickeys.
Impossible. Not on Ann Millers very best day and Judy's very worst day. Ann Miller was a great dancer, but, I'll take Eleanor Powell. She was much more athletic then Ms.Miller. There was some reason why Ms.Miller never became a tier one performer.
And she was in a brace recovering from a broken bone in her back. She was in pain every single moment of that.

I felt alittle choked up towards the end... I didn’t know that the wizard of oz wasn’t received well initially, that’s crazy.
I don’t know if the Wizard of Oz was considered a failure because it didn’t make money when it was released. But, it wasn’t a total failure because, it did well at the box-office. But, the movie was the most expensive movie made (I think in history). It ran way over budget, with the replacement of Buddy Ebsen as the Tin Man, after a months shooting, Margaret Hamilton having to take time off because of her burns, and Judy getting Pneumonia. So they were way over budget.

Beautiful Margret O'Brien - hidden by Larry King, I didn't even realize she was there. King is, indeed, an annoying personality. Not on this show, but sometimes he can be good at his work. I'd never seen Lorna Luft before - she'd have made her glorious mother proud.

Ann Miller comments about Judy are mostly faults. Her story about Deanna Durbin and Judy just isn’t true. Other comments about her being late, one story was she wasn’t prepared, and her other story was although she was always late we still finished on time because she was so well prepared. And that’s the truth because I heard both interviews.
To MGM, Judy Garland was a cash cow and a commodity. They cared nothing about her health or what they did to her that addicted her to pills.

At my work, I got chatting with some customers. We got talking about the new cover "Over the Rainbow" on the ukulele. I said it was a nice song, but the words were wrong, and I had grown up hearing Judy Garland singing it. The looked at me blankly. I asked if they had ever heard of Judy Garland. Two had NEVER HEARD of her. The third one had heard the name, but didn't know who she was. :(
How many after seeing the film wish Mickey Rooney had have stood up for Judy, not just as a child in Hollywood, but the years after?

Lorna acts like she was THERE she’s exhausting.
She was a supreme stylist firstly and this combined with a knowledge of what it means to be a `star` and how to make it work made Judy Garland the ikon of the 20th century. I saw her once in person in the late 50s when she played Westchester County. I went backstage and met her..got a dressing down for not waiting in front with the others. They called her `One Take Judy` and told her to `googie` her eyes. It all worked...supremely.
Heartbreaking. None of them got to give their full reminiscences about her, with that old iguana interrupting and picking random flies off the table with his tongue.
Ann Miller really didn't belong on that show. I really don't believe she was to fond of Judy. I think they call it Jealously.

I can't stand Larry King as an interviewer. He interrupts, he's cold and impersonal, he doesn't validate anything anyone says. Judy Garland was a much beloved person and these are people who knew and loved her intimately but he just blew right over them and saw her as a media product just like Judy was treated most of her life.
Agreed. No follow up, no focus, and just every stereotype evident in the questioning. A total waste of a great opportunity to get some first hand recollection from those who were there.

Boy you got that right. I was just listening to the first 10 minutes of this interview and was appalled at his behavior. These were close friends the daughter Mickey Rooney and to jump from one topic to suddenly talking about her difficult years. I can't stand the way he cuts people off. If he allowed a natural flow between these people it would have been a really beautiful tribute to Judy Garland. But I agree with you completely his treatment of this interview was really poor.

Hazel Juanita Millan-Hoffman - I think liza is a better performer than Lorna. What I don't like about Lorna was that in the book she made her father Syd seemed a nice guy but he wasn't because of him Judy was broke and living from the charity of some of her friends. Syd like anyone else only used Judy for the money and the fame her name alone brought.

32 years is never enough.
Unbelievable that in her last years Judy had nothing and had to rely on the kindness of friends to just have a place to sleep... after makeing millions and millions of dollars for all those studios. It’s a crying shame she didn’t have the forthright and intelligence to handle her own money and sign her own checks. She was pitifully and totally robbed.
I don’t think it was lack of intelligence on Judy’s part; she was very smart. But when it came to finances and business she was naive and too trusting of others to take care of that side of things.

She started there as a young girl, and she was an investment, like a property. The studio ran their lives. Judy probably never learned about money, because she didn't have to. The money came pouring in and was always there -- till it wasn't! And when it wasn't Judy was struggling with that, as well as physical/emotional problems.
Love the fact that Judy would get "really nervous" before going on stage. You'd never know it by watching her videos.

Yes - a bad interviewer that needs some lessons in decency. He appears to have very few qualities to endorse himself as an interviewer of any note or charm.
Robert Price - you're absolutely right about Larry, can't stand him, overrated in my opinion.
You're right that he could be like that. And yet he was replaced by an obsequious jerk (forget his name) who was FAR worse, trying to make the show only about himself and often not even civil to people who weren't the big stars he could suck up to disgustingly.

These people are remembering insignificant things that were happening to other people while they were busy with their own lives 63 to 65 years earlier. Rooney, though he was a great juvenile talent, became a show-biz robot incapable of saying anything that wasn't stereotypical show-biz tripe. Tony Curtis once said kissing Marilyn Monroe was like kissing Hitler, then spent the rest of his life denying he ever said it. I love Judy's talent and her life story -- I saw her live at the Palace -- but no other performer would say anything negative about her if they could possibly avoid it. That's ShowBiz!!!
During the time of Mickey and Judy your money was taken or used by parents. When you don't have someone to keep you safe and guidance from the people who see you only as a product. A money maker for them its going to be hard to make the right choices.
