It is well documented that although she did have drinks, she rarely finished them. What you are seeing is the affect the years of taking highly addictive medication, first given to her in her teens by the studios and then on and off with "doctors" swirling all around her. She's as much a victim as she is accountable.
Judy was obviously drunk or high, but still came up with the goods. And respect to Paar for navigating the interview so skillfully and with obvious affection for his guest and friend. Civilised audience too who sound as if they saw beyond Garlands fragility to the heart of the legend..
The people who claim Judy is drunk or high here are not watching her body language---if she was either, she is the most elegant and poised "drunk" who was "high" during a television appearance I've ever seen. She doesn't ramble and her wit as is razor-sharp, as ever. The fogginess of her voice was due, factually, to a reported bout with the flu, which began that previous March and from she was obviously still recovering. She went on to play the Palace Theatre, which she reopened in 1951, one last time, that August, to great acclaim.
DON'T FORGET PEOPLE HER LEGACY WAS THAT SHE WAS A TRULY AN AMAZING SINGER AND ACTRESS. Addiction is A Horrible Thing!!! I'm sure we all know somebody that has died from an Overdose either from pills or alcohol!! CAN WE JUST SHOW SOME RESPECTAND REMEMBER THE GOOD THINGS ABOUT THEM INSTEAD OF TEARING THEM DOWN TO THE GROUND❤️❤️
Drunk or not this woman was and still is a legend. Her voice was so distinctive. I've become a huge fan 50 years after she died which says it all. Once a legend always a legend x
Judy Garland was a Champion ! A Master at her Craft/Art...and...she was Real : nothing phoney about her ! I wish we had her just a little bit longer...but her Legacy will last forever !
She was the Whitney Houston in her day as far as drug addiction and being a mess. But as a singer AND actress she was Judy Garland and only Judy Garland. An original.
Poor judy. Such a terribly sad childhood of abuse. Her mother even drugged her. Not allowed to eat. Plied with uppers, downers whilst filming the wizard of oz. She didn't stand a chance and had such an unhappy life.
The most incredible live performance I've ever seen (and I've seen a lot of them) was Judy at the Hollywood Bowl. It was her comeback to Hollywood after her amazing comeback at Carnegie Hall. I don't know how I managed to convince my mother to take me. There were 20,000 people there and it rained. In Los Angeles, whenever it rains, everybody runs for shelter but NOBODY left. I remember seeing the tears of the big red-faced Texan who sat next to me mixing with the rain on his face. I will never forget that night.

Jack Paar's introduction of Judy is so beautiful and heartbreaking, and the two look like they are having so much fun together.
So tragic the way Judy Garland ended-up! She is truly a NATIONAL TREASURE! Her singing voice was so very lovely!! Very talented actress as well!
