She actually introduced this classic for the first time ever in one of her classic films with Mickey Rooney. How superb to know she released a solo recorded version. Wow, I wish my parents had kept all the hundreds of my late Gran’s records from the WWII/Golden Era. She had several of Judy’s, as I recall (“Rainbow,” “Trolley Song,” “Never Walk Alone,” etc.) Her collection was a treasure too easily dismissed. This is a delight. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Jonathan, thank you very much for watching and for your wonderful comment - so happy you enjoyed this recording with the great Judy Garland!! 🤗 Yes - the movie this song is from was "Babes on Broadway" and the scene Judy sings it together with Mickey Rooney is worth to watch as is the whole film - what an amazing team they were!! 🎶👌 What a pity that the records of your Gran are gone - I can imagine what a fantastic collection it must have been (the songs with Judy you mention are a delight)!! What a wonderful joy this music still gives to us! 🎶❤️🎶 Thank you again and all my best wishes for you! 🍀🌷🌼🌻 Heartfelt greetings from Bavaria! Julian
@@juliansshellacs7807 You’re quite welcome and thank you. I could have blown a gasket when I learned my parents chucked her enormous collection. No sense of value for them, and my Gran had taken excellent care of each and every item. She had a tremendous slew of recordings by Anita O’Day from the late 1930s and early ‘40s, Billie Holiday, Artie Shaw, Sinatra, Tommy Dorsey, Andrews Sisters, dozens of Guy Lombardo, Ella Fitzgerald, Dinah Shore, the three or four Garland 78s I mentioned, Lena Horne, Mario Lanza, soundtrack “albums” when they first appeared, and album collections by many of these artists in the old multiple-sleeve “album” formats, with 78s. Of course, when LP albums arrived … she had an avalanche of those (in mono and stereo) by all the major artists of the day: all the Frank Sinatra Capitol albums, all the Dean Martin, all of Kay Starr, Duke Ellington, June Christy, Nina Simone, all of Peggy Lee, all of the Ella composer-tribute albums, Lou Rawls, Al Martino, two or three Garland albums (incl. the famous Carnegie double), Doris Day, Patsy Cline, Tony Bennett … too many to list. She lived to age 90 and was a keen music lover to the end, even purchasing CDs into her 70s and 80s. She simply loved good singers. Some of her latter day favorites were actually k.d. Lang (who reminded her of Cline and Garland) as well as ENYA! I was astonished when I visited and heard her playing Enya on the little CD boom box next to her kitchen chair. She said, “It’s so orchestral and lovely!” If I had not moved far away, I would have helped her curate her collection. She had often talked about doing that. Vintage, vintage stuff stored brilliantly. She was quite a woman and had marvelous taste. (NO rock & roll, though, unfortunately. She drew a line at that 😄. But really good pop and jazz and *some* country? She had it.) Hundreds of mint condition records covering 8 different decades, since her girlhood. It was a crime to get rid of that collection … however it may really have been “gotten rid of.”

1:36 "And Franklin Roosevelt's looks give me a thrill." I think we can safely accredit this to the propaganda department. The record was released in November, the movie premiered on December 3rd, 1941, only for days prior to Pearl Harbor and the attack that shocked a whole nation but boosted FDR's popularity which had been waning, due to the huge failure that the New Deal really was. Even so, Frank Sinatra too was thrilled by his looks but later changed his eye to Jimmy Durante, in the famous recording with Nelson Riddle. When Rosemary Clooney and Bing Crosby did the song on their _Fany Meeting You Here_ album, Rosie was thrilled by Frank Sinatra's looks, as was Joni James a year later. In the recording with the Hi-Lo's she named Nelson Riddle, who was her real-life lover. In 1957, Anthony Perkins was smitten with Sophia Loren (as was quasi every member of the male species). Annie Ross preferred Billy Eckstine, Bobby Darin by JFK (another president). Joe Pesci gets a thrill from Oprah Winfrey's smile, Sylvia Syms is thrilled by Robert Redford's looks, Morgana King by Michael Jackson's, Jack Sheldon by Theresa Russell's. On one of her last albums, Rosemary Clooney picked up the song again in a duet with Barry Manilow, accompanied by the Count Basie Orchestra under the direction of trombonist Grover Mitchell, and she was logically thrilled by the Basie Orchestra. Last but not least, I want to remind you of Brazil's cult singer and pianist Dick Farney, who is the only singer I know of who actually honored his spouse. "And Mrs. Farney's looks give me a thrill." Well, isn't that nice? One of the great list songs, open for improvisation and all kinds of updates as the thrilling contemporaries indicate. No one, though, sang _How About You?_ with the same sincerity and youthful innocence as sweet, incomparable Judy.
Wow, dear Henri - what a great list of fantastic different interpretations of this beautiful song!! 👌 Thank you very much for your wonderful comment and so happy you enjoyed hearing again Judy's marvelous performance of it!! 🎤🎶♥️👍🤗 Have a nice weekend, my friend and heartfelt greetings from the train to Würzburg (to celebrate my father's 91. birthday tomorrow)! 🍀🌼🌷🌸🍀
