What questions do you have about clinical psychology?
The Psych Show Hi Dr.Mattu! How much talking/psychoanalysis do you do in sessions as compared to a Counseling Psychologist? Also, do most Clinical Psychologists specialize in something, and would that require more schooling (as you have done with body-repetitive behaviors)?
What do you mean by "analyze"? Are analysis and psychoanalysis the same thing? =)
Good question, Josué! I purposely ignored this issue in the video due to time.
When the public asks about "analyzing", it usually means some version of "are you using your knowledge of psychology to interpret what I am doing/thinking/feeling right now". That's the question I answered in this video.
When therapists refer to "analysis", it's usually a reference to psychoanalysis, a specific theoretical orientation within psychotherapy. Theoretical orientations (e.g. psychoanalysis and cognitive behavioral therapy) differ in what they conceptualize is the mechanism behind someone's problem, but the rest of the video should hold true - no therapist can read your mind and we only practice in collaboration with our patients after we have their permission.

Psychoanalysis is a specific theoretical orientation. My training is in a different theoretical orientation, cognitive behavioral therapy. When I am doing therapy, I work with my patient to identify the mechanisms behind their problems and then develop skills to address those mechanisms. Sometimes this is done within my office, sometimes patients practice skills with my coworkers, and sometimes we go outside and practice skills outside of our clinic. This is a mixture of talking and doing.
My degree is in clinical psychology. Counseling psychology is a different degree. There are a lot of aspects of our training that are similar and both degrees can lead you to become a licensed psychologist. However, the emphasis in our training is a little different. When I'm working with graduate students, I encourage all of them to specialize in a growth area within psychology (e.g. child and adolescent care, geriatrics, diabetes and obesity, integrated primary care). At the same time, for some areas (e.g. rural populations) being a generalist and doing a little bit of everything is a speciality within itself.

I did my degree in psychology and whenever someone would ask me what I'm studying in school I would say psychology and the next question that pops out of their mouth is "Do you know what I'm thinking?"......No I'm not a mind reader I'm taking psychology, not studying to become telepathic

Meanwhile when I tell people my specialty was in forensic mental health the first response is "oh, like CSI!"
When someone asks me if I am analyzing them, I always say " I am now since you mentioned it"

I get what you mean, about your training kicking in. It reminds me of the eye of an artist - where one sees a composition and thinks about how it was made, the textures, techniques, and the use of colors. It involves the basic observation of it that anyone would have, but also you become technical with automatically.
Thanks for making this, Ali! It reminds me of how, whenever anyone finds out I'm a singer, they almost always ask me to sing something. It's one of the reasons I mostly just introduce myself as a theorist these days and leave out that I have any performance training. Not many people ask me to analyze symphonies on the fly.
It's interesting to hear how you approach these situations, though, 'cause I would've assumed it was much harder to resist drawing conclusions. I know when I listen to music I can't help breaking down arrangements and stuff, I would've thought it'd be similar. Although admittedly I don't really do real, hardcore analysis until I have a score in front of me, so maybe there's some analogy to be drawn there... Plus, obviously, it's a completely different field!
Thanks for your comment! It's interesting how our experiences are so similar ("are you analyzing me?" and "sing something!"). I wonder if comedians get asked to "say something funny"? It must be a common type of question to get for people in service and performing roles.
I've had a lot of experience in my clinical work of thinking I know what's going on for my patient, asking about it, and realizing I'm completely off. If my assumptions are so often off in treatment, then they're going to be FAR less accurate with people I meet in public. That's why it's become easy for me to resist drawing conclusions.

Dr. Mattu is right! You can't just "turn off" your training. This also applies to all other mental health clinicians (Marriage and Family Therapists, Clinical Social Workers, Clinical Professional Counselors, etc).

This is perfect!! I have asked what their profession is and then said "Do you..." based on what they say. People in related construction fields can really relate because YES, they do look at people's homes and think about what could be done differently and how they would remodel it. LOL

im not a psychogist, but ive studied alottttt of psych because i just love it.. and when i start explaining to people some interesting facts about how i think and analyze people sometimes... they look at me like "uhhhhh, are you analyzing me?" lmaooo sometimes i tell myself i should just shut up about what im thinking but if i dont i start going crazyyyy
Lol the last thing you said is interesting about lying about your profession. I want to go into clinical psychotherapy, but through an MSW. So I can always say "I'm a social worker" rather than a therapist lol. Nice perk

When learning to be a clinical psychologist, did you learn certain ways to speak and respond beyond things like active listening? Does clinical psychology have a role in a therapeutic milieu (such as a residential setting) or is that more reserved for specified sessions? What things did you learn in under grad versus grad school? What types of theraputic activities do you do with patients one on one? Have you ever facilitated group therapy as a clinical psychologist?

Heyy Dr Ali! Can you make a roleplay therapy session with a client presenting with symptoms of ADHD?
Imagine a girl who studies psychology likes you, she can see right through you and she knows exactly what to do to make you like her and she'll know what to do to make you react in whatever way she wants, that is scary and powerful.
Some of the most effective treatments, like cognitive behavioral therapy or dialectical behavioral therapy, aren't mysterious. We're very open with our patients about what we are doing and how the treatment works. We're also trained to respond understand why people might want to present themselves in a specific way and what to do about it (e.g. "apparent competence").
Even a BA in psychology leads to this question! I've always thought this was an interesting question partly b/c an undergrad degree doesn't come with much practical experience (usually.) It's more like an overview of the field. Why do you think people ask you this question?
Good point. I got asked this question a lot even when I was an undergrad student. I think the question comes from stereotypes about psychology and how the field works.
Thanks for this! I don't ask this, because I'm used to people asking me the most cliched questions about my field. So I try to avoid doing it to others. That said, my biggest question is how you can avoid burning out in the process of taking on so many people's mental health burdens.
Great question! Taking care of yourself and coping with burnout is something I spend a lot of time talking to my colleagues and trainees about. I haven't made a video about this yet (indirectly spoke to it here: ua-cam.com/video/6o9P0qsj5-I/v-deo.html) but I should do that. What I can tell you in a comment is it comes down to taking care of your own personal needs, finding good boundaries that work for you, learning how to be at work when you're at work and be at home when you're home, investing in something unrelated to your work (for me it's this channel), and asking for help from colleagues and friends when you need it.
After having been in therapy for a couple years, I will not claim to comprehend half of the processes, techniques, or work my therapist has done to help me.
Analyzing me, I am sure from my experience could not have been done without me actively sharing details about my experiences.
So I find your profession very interesting, but I have no reason to feel threatened by anyone analyzing me during a friendly conversation, or a first encounter.
Before I started therapy, that question might have been the first on my mind. Now I am more curious about what motivated you to choose such an interesting and I am sure at times quite tough career.
So what motivated you to become a clinical psychologist? What motivates you to keep going with this career?

These questions are more interesting to me now. Most likely because I find your choice in career very fascinating and because of the help I myself have gotten, I feel it must at times be a difficult and stressful profession you have chosen. That said, I bet it is very rewarding as well.

I love this video! I get this question every time I meet someone new at my university! What would you say to someone if they told you psychology is not a science or that psychology is a pseudoscience? A biology professor continuously tells me the previous statements and I never have a good enough argument.
Glad you enjoyed the video! There have been a bunch of times I've received the same comment, that psychology is not a science. There're a few ways I respond, depending on what the criticism is. The first is to better understand the criticism. Is it about methodology? About impact? About experimental control? Replication? My answer usually becomes some combination of our methods are rigorous, we are a hub science (www.psychologicalscience.org/observer/psychology-is-a-hub-science) *and* at the same time human behavior is complicated, many variables are involved which are difficult to control, and we are a young science.
I mean we conduct experiments and use evidence based on what we learn from said experiments just like any other scientific field. So that at least debunks the pseudoscience argument.

"Are you analyzing me?", is an attempt to analyze you. If analyzing other people makes you necessarily bad, then the person who asks the question "are you analyzing me?", is necessarily bad...So, my question for a clinical psychologist and other people is "do you think analyzing is necessarily bad"? And other question is "exactly how could one possibly not analyze other people"?
I don't think there's anything bad about trying to understand others. At it's core it's about empathy and understanding, things that make us human.
Nice. That's the whole reason why the question sounds quite moralistic in the first place. It is somehow passive - aggressive and defensive. Reverse psychology which aims to limit your freedom to think.
I think analyzing is not bad. It is the goals and the quality of knowledge it is based on that makes it bad. Sadly enough, if one doesn't possess high quality knowledge it is impossible to know or use that knowledge. So when people project their understanding about the analyzing, which in many cases is same as rumination, they are talking about totally different things than you are.

Okay I had a session with my psychiatrist. He told me to ignore my thoughts I was doing it excellently but now there is a thought that what if I have told my psychiatrist something wrong however I haven't what to do

Which languages would you suggest learning for clinical psych (python, r, etc.)? Also, are there standardized tests psychometrists use, I can't find any resources (except MMSE)? I'd like to work alongside a clinical neuropsychologist but don't know where to train to become a certified psychometrist

This just sounds like someone who needs to work on anger management. Well.. I mean it could be a lot of things, but there hardly any information to work with.
Emotional dysregulation. Lacks emotional IQ. Lacks self-awareness. Lacks self-control. High trigger reactivity.

It can be validating and also helps the person get insurance coverage. BUT a diagnosis is just the beginning of understanding their story. You have to talk about everything else I mention here, especially mechanisms.

Great question! Most PhD programs have deadlines in the fall or early winter. If you're going to be applying at the end of 2019, I would contact professors in the spring of 2019 and see if they are taking on new students in the next academic year.

Yesterday at night i was in a room, i had to wait there until the smell of spray for mosquitoes disappeared so i can get out, because of a temporary fear from not long ago i felt like locked in in that room because i knew i won't be able to get out (I'm not claustrophobic) when i want to, while i was waiting there i was looking at my phone too which made me feel even more locked and hard to breathe, now when i left the room i didn't feel like I did, and even now i have the same feeling, I'm trying to convince my mind that I'm out not and that it's all good but it's not working much, i feel better for a bit and the feeling comes again, what should i do?.
Also the fear i had was actually trauma from about couple weeks ago that happened in the car, it was similar to this.
I am a sports therapist and wellness coach and when I say what I do - people start telling me about their shoulder issue and asking me why they have a pain in their back. I think this might be human nature. I would be scared to say I was an accountant in case people started asking me about their taxes. (I have dyscalculia - lol)

It’s not specific to psychologist, people in general naturally make inference about attribution, it’s just psychologist make inference based on psychological theories, also psychologist tend to think more deeply...

Your explanation of the "yes" side of your answer sounds to me like something everyone does on some level. Which, despite not being a psychologist myself, annoys me about the question. Because people analyze the behavior of others, and linking to something else you mentioned, they'll end up making assumptions (diagnoses) about people (celebrities or not) with barely any information.
Maybe I'm overthinking it.

Omg I thought I was the only psych graduate that constantly lies about what I do for the sake of being left alone. So many of my acquaintances ask me to DIAGNOSE their mother-in-law, aunt, dogsitter whoever tf they feel angry with at the moment.. and im just there like "cut me some slacks, im not a magician or some omnipotent being"😵😌

Of course! In fact, if you have an interest in education and psychology you might want to consider school psychology. Many school psychologists practice like clinical psychologists but focus on school settings.

Do you ever have any issues concerning patients feeling that the relationship between you is one-sided or too one directional? It seems to be a situation, at least potentially, where one party is being much more open than the other.
Sometimes this happens, but honestly what you see here on this channel is similar to what happens in my office. If people have important questions about me or my experiences as long as it is helpful for their treatment we'll talk about them.

Do you fear harsh criticism then? The comment I posted last week mysteriously vanished. Most scientists say they’d rather be proven wrong than proved right because they would have learned something. The psychologists I’ve met were too intently looking at others to consider that they themselves could ever be wrong.
