      Currently getting my bachelor's in psych and working with a research team to get into D.Psy or PhD in a few years, if it adds any credibility to my comment.
      Our program's teachers are putting a lot of efforts into helping the students understand which way they can go after majoring in psych if they can't, then, get into a Doc program or simply don't want to. There's honestly more than people think at first. A lot of other Doc & Masters programs would rather take Psych students in than their own students (at least here) because our course offers a more "completed" and rigorous program.
      Basically : Get a major in psych even if you don't plan on going to grad school, as long as you stay in a similar domain, such as Orientation, Education, Speech therapy and more.

      I would suggest that you major in social work and minor in psychology, as an undergraduate. The reason is that it is hard to get a job with a BA in psychology but it is much easier to get a job with a degree in social work. If you do not go on for your masters having a degree in social work is extremely likely to lead to finding a job pays well. Conversely, a degree in psychology at the BA level is extremely unlikely to lead to a job. Once you get into the Masters level both a psychology and a social work degree is likely to lead to a job.

    I was also a psych major. My intention was to grow a career in the healthcare sector but this changed after volunteering for 3-months at a major hospital. I got to experience and see what life could be like as a social worker and by the end of the period of working there, I was sure that I wanted a different way of applying what I was learning.
    Afterwards, in my 3rd and 4th year, I got the opportunity to work with some friends on a startup idea and I was positioned as the marketing lead. My task was to figure out how best to push the product and make it appealing to people. From then on, my focus has shifted majorly towards consumer behaviour and I am curious to see how much more I can do in my field of work as a marketing exec.

    • @schraudi5763

      Here's a couple of tips I would give you as a BSc Psych student:
      1. Read (just start looking for information: what is being taught, different fields, literature etc.)
      2. Get your math skills straight (a proper understanding of statistics and research methods is crucial to be a good psychologist in my opinion, given that the methodology can be quite challenging and flawed. Even if you do not want to become a researcher, you should be able to understand the scientific literature to apply the knowledge being produced. There's a lot of misinterpretation and superficial understanding going on in psychology and the social sciences in general)
      3. Be curious (about individuals/human functioning) and willing to work with others
      4. It can really help to have an idea about what you wanna do with this degree, which kind of refers back to my first point (might not be necessary though, as the field is really broad and you're probably going to learn a fuckton of stuff you've never heard about before)

      Look into the different types of programs there are at different uni's. The university I study at has a very heavy focus on science and math and going into research, but there are other universities who have a different approach and prepare you in different ways. So look at what different types of programs there are in the area where you want to go to university and just read a bit on their websites about their approach, compare the classes you can pick in first year at different schools. Just try to get a feel of what suits you best before going into it.

This is why I tell everyone that my studies are more time dense. I feel like for some majors, you memorize it and apply it. With Psychology, it's not like that. You literally are remodeling the way you look at everything, and applying it to yourself, is transformative, and can be emotional and cathartic. This is where it takes longer sometimes. I especially enjoyed you mentioning office hours, and connecting with your professors about discussing graduate school and connections tied to psychology. That was incredibly helpful and reassuring.

    Thank you so much for all your insightful videos! Received my BS in Psychology in 2007 with honors. Although I have not yet returned to get my Master's for Marriage and Family Therapy. My Bachelor degree has become so influential in all the decisions I have made in my hospital management positions. I've not regretted jumping into a Masters program directly after graduating as I was not ready at that time financially or psychologically. Now with all the skills I have acquired on-the-job, I feel more prepared to be successful in completing a Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy. Watching your videos has helped me to jump forward and put in my application for school again. Thank you!

    hello, this video is very timely to me! i’m thinking of majoring in psychology for college (i’m in 12th grade) however there’s a stigma about taking a psychology course, from where i live, some people say that it is a “useless” course or an “easy” course, wherein one who majored in psychology will most likely not get a job with their degree, or if they do, it will not make much income. just wanted to share this because it’s extremely discouraging, but thank you for your video!

    • @alexadavis816
      @alexadavis816 5 років тому +15

      Shalom Cruz that stigma exists because many people believe you can stop after obtaining a bachelor’s degree in psychology like you could with most majors. This is not the case, as this drastically limits you to low income jobs like social work only. Think of the field of psychology like the field of medicine. You wouldn’t stop at a bachelor’s degree after your pre-med. What kind of a job would you be qualified for? A medical assistant at best. Medicine is meant to be carried out to the MD level. Psychology is also meant to be carried out to the PhD level. When it is carried out to the PhD level, your income earnings can be very high depending on what you do!! I’m planning on becoming a research psychologist with average salary being $95k a year according to the APA.

      @@alexadavis816 You are so right at this! People who thought there's no job after psychology lol ok i admit it there's not a good job after Bachelors because Psychology is not a major that you just done bachelors and think it's ok (like Engineering) you should do masters and PhD/PsyD... just like medicine. Just MBBS (Bachelors) is not enough 4 years specialization + 1 year practice is required to be specialist/surgeon. And also business management, doing BBA is not enough, people do MBA after this because of specialization, even go with Mphil..

    I wasn't a psych major, but I took a lot of classes. I've applied a lot of the things I've learned to my fiction writing. Psychology is really great for understanding that people/characters are aware of themselves, their needs, and their goals on multiple levels of consciousness. Also, I ran into the same situation for my Tech/Creative writing English BA. Nobody gave instruction on how to write query letters, so I've been having to teach myself, and the emphasis was on analyzing academic texts.

    I have done years and years worth of research before I finally settled on psych as my major as well as Criminal Justice because I am the one that’s more in line with the psych and law intersect. I even have everything mapped out. Or at least thought I did until watching this video where you told your student you wouldn’t recommend a doctorate. Where as online will tell you that your psych degree will mean nothing without one. Less schooling for me and more time to really hone those skills and theories. I have borderline personality disorder. I was told, after what felt like thousands of med combos, that I was basically a lost cause. Yet my intro to psych professor, who I visited his office regularly, really told me that I can let it control me or take my control back. I have been med free for 4 years now, no relapse, and my mental health has never been better. Even on my “bad” days, I’m still great. Because communication is so important. Especially with ourselves. I found my solution without a doctors help but from my community college professors advice. I apply it daily. Now I want to delve into the criminal mind. So thank you greatly for that advice. I will definitely apply it when I start my undergrad and grad. I’ve known this is where I belong. Not because of the glitz and glamor Hollywood has made it out to be. But because of the real life accounts and the victims that were left behind. Thanks again!!!

I love helping people so much I've done it my whole life and now I want to take it further. I found my interest for psych when I was looking into requirements for my goal career and I took the intro class at my high school and fell in love with it. I'm scared going into this because I understand this is gonna be much more difficult than the HS class but I'm really hoping that my goal is gonna keep me focused and motivated. After I complete college obviously I'm gonna get into counselling but also really hope to do more to reach out to more people. My goal is to help the most people I possibly can. So I wanna do like speeches and talks and such at schools or with other organizations and things just to hopefully reach out and help more people than just those who can pay for the help they need.

    I don't know how it works in america but I live in the Netherlands. First I took a year of applied psychology. It's a 4 year college degree but if you finish the first year with all A's basically you can apply for the psychology program at a university. That's a three year course that heavily focusses on the science part. In your last year you have to write a thesis about a studie or other type of research you conducted or were a part of. The university course really prepares you for a masters and is really research based, while the 4 year college course prepares you for applying psychological theories in a plethora of different fields. There isn't a job title 'applied psychologist', it's really broad. So that basically solves the problem for people who wouldn't be interested in grad school but do want to study psychology, that's what the applied psychology course is for.

      @dyver123 Рік тому

      @@farhanasanjida4438 it's great! I'm halfway through to being a psychologist, and just about everything is interesting.
      With that said I do absolutely have some pieces of advice:
      - Take your methodology classes very seriously. Psychology is still a new field of research, and we as psych students need to be able to differentiate between good and bad science, as there's plenty of both.
      - Find a niche you're interested in. Psychology is a super broad field and you can work with just about anything. I'm personally very drawn towards biopsychology, and will be pursuing a specialization in neuropsychology while doing my master's.
      - Learn to be okay with not knowing the answers to some (or even most) things. People are going to start asking you questions when they realize you study psychology, and you wont have the answers to - a lot - of those questions. This makes many psych students feel bad or stupid, and that's very understandable. However, the reason this happens is usually because the answers people want are simple, but the answers we can give usually aren't. The human psyche is incredibly complex, and if you find yourself answering complex questions with super reductive answers (Like "It's because of evolution" for instance), you're probably doing a disservice to yourself, the person you're talking to and the field. It's okay to say "I don't know", essentially.
      - Lastly, make sure to devote time to things outside of your studies. We aren't machines and, as you'll learn over and over again, we NEED other things than sustenance and work in our lives. Don't let the fact that you find psychology interesting become an excuse for it to consume your entire being.
      I hope some of this can be helpfull, and good luck! You've gotten into one of the most fascinating fields in the world! Congratz on that as well!

    I am not sure if I want to go to grad school but there are several different things I want to try and I do not want to be limited to one field. I don't see myself staying in one career field for too long either.

    I’m a psychology major finishing my undergrad. I am 34 years old and I have been in the financial/billing role for over 13 years. It’s very difficult for me to find a career path geared towards psychology without having my bachelor’s degree. What your advise be for someone who has a totally different background not geared towards psychology and only have an associates degree while working on undergrad?

    This video is by far the most useful thing I watched on youtube thanks to Dr. Mattu, honestly, I got a little sad because I'm studying psychology in Iran and there is not much of fields you get into or internships and It's really hard making those opportunities for yourself, tho I have Great ideas about combining my major with my passion which is CS, I am kinda disappointed the way things are here. :(

    Really awesome video. I have a recommendation... Could you please give a quick summary at the end of a video? Just listing the points on-screen or running through them.
    I ask because most points flow one after the other, so they seem similar and I don't remember individual points, but do remember the concepts presented :)
