How The Defense Industry Profits From Militarizing The Police

- The defense industry has become a major player in the domestic homeland security market, estimated to be worth over $20 billion in goods and services. Their contributions play a major role in maintaining a steady flow of militarized equipment to local law enforcements. However, lack of oversight has created some deadly consequences.

Well I can understand that police forces need military grade weapons in certain special situations like school shootings, hostage situations and counteracting criminal organisations. Our police need vests so they don't get killed when criminals shoot them. They need rifles so they can reach criminals from a distance who are armed. LA Bank shoot out, 1997 police were armed with shotguns and pistols unable to stop the violent and deadly robbers. Who wore body armor and outgunned the police for 44min until the arrival of swat. Police were forced to borrow weapons from local gun stores in an attempt to match the firepower of the robbers.
This occurred on Feb 28th, 1997
In 1997 as of October 1st, all police departments were now able to gain surplus military equipment. Cause and effect as beforehand it had been severely limited to agencies directly involved in interdicting the drug trade.

An introduction
States oversight, if certain States are sensible or do all go all out?
Compare to other developed countries in type of equipments, is this normal or anormal?
How much impact did 9/11 turn the police into military ? As there is the seminar this was a turning point.
With regards to 9/11, there was an increase in police spending and presence, but the militarization only occurred much later. Before then it was much more focused on individual tasks forces with a detailed operation description.
And compared to other countries, the difference is wild.As an American living in the Netherlands, I have only seen smoke grenades used once in combination with police horses. The use of tear gas, rubber bullets, stun grenades, etc. is practically unheard of. Not just in the Netherlands, but across most of Europe. I would also like to point out that shotguns and tear gas being used in war time is deemed a war crime as it inflicts unwarranted harm that mostly effects bystanders.
For oversight it is a bit complicated. But in general there are few, if any, oversight organizations in the US. It isn't uncommon for police departments to not even know how to coordinate with neighboring departments. The main oversight organization is the FBI, but that is mostly limited to investigations of misconduct, but it isn't super effective atm.
The Militarization of police started after shootings like columbine and the Hollywood shootout. They needed officers to stop active shooters and be able to handle them. That is why we see officers with rifles and shotguns.
They also need armored vehicles to safely protect officers and the public from high risk situations.
Having a weak police force doesn't help either. Go to some countries in where the police is barely equipped against gangs that have military type fire power. Other countries' citizens would be glad to have a capable police force. Some course correction is needed but the propaganda a lot of news outlets are trying to pass is wrong. They are making it seems like policing is a bad thing. It's appalling to see the idea of no police or banning them is even a topic of discussion. You are supporting willingly many individuals that would love this to happen so they cannot be bothered in their evil activities. Are the people shooting every weekend in some cities that I won't name going to voluntarily return their guns most likely illegal ones? Are you CNBC going to spend as much energy raising awareness to ask people to stop engaging in illegal activities, shooting others over nothing, etc. CNBC you have to put your effort towards that to, raising awareness for people to reject or abandon illegal activities, homicides, drugs dealing, etc and then you ll have a society that will need less police patrolling.
Speaking from an European view of point, it is bad and you definitely don’t need to militarise your police. We’re doing just fine over here without heavily armed policemen. And when there’s terrorism or a gang with a ‘military fire power’, the army is able to support and assist the police. Just like your army is doing against protesters.

Where just a small portion of our *massive* defense budget goes...
US Police departments are militarized, trained by the Israeli IDF, and they are Racist. What could possibly go wrong?
It's a chronology. There is a incident that causes a police fatality by a armed civilian. There is a public outcry and reports and suggestions. The authorities follow the advises and implement the suggestions to save their position. Police get better equipped. then another incident occurs and there is a fatality of civilian killed by a police. There is public outcry and reports and suggestions. Again the authorities follow the advises and implement the suggestions to save their position. Now the police equipment is taken away. Another incident occurs. And it goes on and on. like a pendulum.
If there wasn't a need, the local and federal law enforcement agencies wouldn't have acquired the equipment. Now with increased rates in crime in all sectors ranging from cyber attacks, warrants to mass shooting, this equipment is vital so the officer is safe. Especially now with the riots, more than ever are the bearcats, tactical clothing and equipment vital. Also what's interesting when Thomas Nolan said about the gear makes people outraged and feared, people have their own train of thought and can decide how they should act. It's obvious that they're law enforcement because of the badges and text that says which law enforcement agency they're from, they got the equipment so they don't get hurt and can control a crowd. Yes people have the right to protest, but others have the right to protect themselves and their property, Law Enforcement is to Protect and to serve. Serving the public and not hurt anyone yes, but they also have the duty to protect their jurisdiction whether it's corporate or a neighbourhood home.

When big money mixes with politics, the government no longer serves for normal citizens! These big power businesses not only control the politics and empire businesses but also exports the important materials to the enemy of Ming Dynasty which is Jin Dynasty( later called Qing Dynasty and known as the final empire of China).
