They're ranking the games not strictly for quality (quite obviously), but for overall long-term impact.
It's the reason DKC 2: Diddy's Kong Quest, despite being objectively the best game in the DKC series, ranks below the original, because DKC1 made the biggest impact. It kept the SNES afloat while Nintendo worked on the N64 and while Sony was entering the console market with the PS1.

Super Mario Bros is great and all but just because it was first does not make it best.
Super Mario World and Mario Bros 3 are far more interesting and a fast improvement. Super Mario 64 as well, with it being 3D, far more mind blowing being a mario fan before that was released. It has everything, bar the power ups, that you can hold on to.

That's mainly because of the Wii. Teens were like, "Oh man... Granny is playing Wii Sports, ain't no way I'm gonna play the same thing as a grandmother...What is this casual shit?" Nintendo creating the Wii is entirely the "gamers" fault by not buying the Gamecube on the previous gen... (one of the most powerful machine of the 6th gen). Nintendo needed to change strategy after that mere 21 millions gamecube sold... and it's all gamer's fault. The Gamecube had an amazing controller that is still used today (SSBU), an amazing library WITH third parties, really good graphics... All things that "gamers" want the Wii U to be... but they didn't buy the Gamecube when it was the time... #Hypocrits

As noted, New Super Mario Bros. is the exception. Otherwise, they're completely different. Tell me what Mario 64, Mario Sunshine, and Mario Galaxy have in common except for character and core mechanics? Mario and Luigi is also a great series.
