- Today we are building our insect hotel or it is more like an insect palace, with both towers and other. Insect hotels are very important for our garden, they attract a lot of insects and we want to have a lot of bugs for all our flowers this summer.
We use euro pallets to make this one but you can use any old wood you have lying around if you want to make one. • How to Make an Insect ...
We have a few other tutorials on the same subject:
• How to Make an Insect ...
And the Christmas star that Carlos talks about is in this episode:

I love watching you two work together, especially when one of you is better at the task than the other. You remind me of two of my family members so that makes it more fun. Can we see what Erik and Anna look like? I would especially love to see the face of whoever is doing the filming when they're laughing at (with?) you. 😊
Absolutely LOVE this, another thing on my to-make-list when I take my pallets apart 🥰
You both are so talented in everything you do. I look forward to each Sunday video - what new project you will be tackling. Thank you for your concern for the environment and its creatures.
Your wood working skills are coming right along Carlos, great job! This project is very cool, its a win-win. Using pallets, helping the environment! Great engineering Arne..
Do you get slugs and if so how do you get rid of them.
Arne and Carlos the two of you are so much fun and loved seeing Little Freya running to you. Thank you for the smiles and laughter
With all sincerity, Why are you building an insect hotel? Is it Bees and butterflies your wanting to attract? I know i want bugs in tge dirt but some bugs will eat your harvest.
All types of insects
@@ARNECARLOS I cant wait to see what happens as time goes on. Ya'll are very interesting. And I share you love of old things and collecting and re-using.
Thank you for all you do.
You might want to install a birdbath bowl next to the bugs and insects structure to attract the little guys so they can drink water.😊
Carlos you are really improving with your woodworking skills!!! I love the insect 🐜 city!!! Have the best week ever!
this is one of your very best podcasts. I laughed out loud watching. You two should have a comedy TV show. But in spite of the laughs and all the screwing, the bug hotel looks splendid and will hopefully survive longer than the gingerbread house did. I've tried and failed to dismantle pallets so I know how tough it is. I hope you get lots of interesting insects. Do you have grass snakes in Norway? If so, they will love it too. Thanks once more for a brilliant episode. Whatever will you get up to next. xxx
thank you for the laughter. seeing Carlos shake his head at Arne trying to figure out how to use the word screw. lol a perfectcexample of love of your partner. lol
Carlos you are so brave and you conquered both the drilling and height on ladder. Arne, you are so patient and creative. Love the insect hotel…it’s a 5 star for sure. ❤
Hi hi, I am reminded of the Gingerbreadhouse project, lol. Hopefully the insect palace is going to hold up better. 😁😆But I am convinced it will have at least 3 stars rewarded, lol. Let`s see, if any other little critters will want to move in as well. Paradise in Arne and Carlos`garden. 😀🙃🥰
Yes, that was a lot of fun though
Yes, Carlos, you ARE getting better at drilling! I will think of you the next time I need to stagger my floats.
We all need to adopt Arne’s positive motto! Through the summer, I hope to see how the insects are enjoying their new resort.
Cool! Never have seen an insect hotel/palace ! Charming idea and commentary …Go Guys ! Fine drilling and construction! Love to see you guys with your ‘ heads together ‘ !! What a kind thing to do in making the house !
Christmas star is gorgeous as well . I saved the instructions for it.
Love

Oh, Carlos! I feel your pain! I am no good at all with power tools. I just can't hold them and push the button and get the screw to go in! But, I'm very good at handing my husband the things he needs! Love this whole idea! Your garden is such a beautiful place for all beings!
All good but remember the Gods deliberately don’t make you good at everything. It makes us need others 🥰
Why would you want to build a hotel for bugs? I can see building a hotel (hive) for bees. Paper wasps will make use of any untreated raw wood. What kind of bugs do you want to live in your insect hotel?
I was wondering the same? Will this keep them from building homes nearer the house?
@@carlettamlodzik5323 Possibly mason/orchard bees. They are solitary early spring bees and around this time they start laying eggs. Very important insects for pollinating spring flowers especially of fruit trees.
great job! What a wonderful structure to have in a garden that is so full of flowering plants. I can relate Carlos to your fear of heights. I never used to have it. I spent my childhood climbing trees. Then when I was in my 40s and building my house I was up and down ladders without a thought, then one day I found myself astride a wall plate (the inner structure of a timber wall) and I looked down, it was 8 meters up and the ground sloping away. It completely took my nerve away and I froze. I managed to focus on getting down and then starting shaking like a leaf. I never completely recovered from that and continued to be very nervous going off the ground.
Thanks for sharing this with us. Very glad no-one was hurt in the process. 😀
Your drilling Carlos has definitely improved but you should keep practicing 😂😂😂
"Arne has left me here, and the drill is down there."😂😂😂 Carlos, you make me laugh. Thank you!
Do either of you remember the gingerbread house six months ago!?!?!?!
Maybe…😅
Great video. Laughed and loved it but...won t the birds in the attic feast on the insects!!! 😂 xx
Oh my goodness! If I am watching this I am laughing so hard!! Should have brought your knitting Arne. Sending joy back your way.
Warning Adult content and humor. Geez, guys I almost peed myself I laughed so hard.
Such a fun project. I was laughing so hard. Loved seeing Arne taking charge of the project and speaking in Norwegian. Lovely
Carlos. Your carpentry skills exceed those of the joiner who built my disintegrating house! Good effort. Jen x
Carlos, you get better each time you pick up the drill. I am impressed! Soon you will be Bossy Carlos and Arne will get to show off his “carpenting” skills. Oh the shenanigans!
😂😂😂😂What in the world? Abandoned at the top of the tower by your prince. “Arne, Aarrnnnee, Aaaarrrrnnneeee”😂😂😂 I was getting nervous, though you warned that you are just fine.
“I should have brought my knitting.” 😂😂😂
Loved the live stream from Kate’s! And eagerly awaited the ‘shorts ’ each day.. hope you guys are safely home.
You have inspired me to ‘ thrift shop’ which I did today in search of a style of sweater like the ones you guys wear… no such luck !
I do not knit ! !!!

What a wonderful idea! So beneficial! Thank you for the great idea!
Ladder safety! Three points of contact, always. Work safely.
Carpenter Carlos and Bossy Arne, I am ready to build this insect palace. I was very successful with the Christmas star. You two are fabulous instructors. ❤
Yes Carlos you have improved your handyman skills🙃😃
Hello, really enjoyed this video. Arne I want to ask you something. I ran into an old Nancy Drew mystery movie on youtube streaming. I was wondering if you can get it in Norway? Thank you to you and Carlos for your videos. Jeannie from Tucson Arizona
Good for you Carlos that you are open to not being perfect! Here in Santa Cruz, CA, I think of you as my friends!
No gloves😢 Splinter city for your hands…You guys need a railroad hand car to make use of those train tracks, what Great exercise that would be!
I appreciate Carlos' fear of heights! My palms are sweating just watching him. BTW, I love what you are making. So ingenious.
I'm cringing watching Carlos climb the pallet!
Hi guys. Enjoying all the travel photos you are posting. Thank you!
In all honesty, if I made a structure that big with openings that size hoping for bugs and insects to move in, I would get mice and rats.
Carlos is teaching us transferable skills from knitting to carpentry.
I have all the wood pieces ready to make a big bug hotel (I have a tiny store bought one near my rose bush). Carlos, I have the same drill! I will be using it tomorrow when I build my new raised garden beds.
Do be careful as I think you need something more sturdy to stand stand on as you get higher...
Little blue tits have been going back and forth to the bird house on our roof terrace. Today I heard loads of little birds screaming when one of the parents entered the bird house with a snack for them. So I know for sure they have hatched, I only noticed a couple of days ago that tits were using the house. This is the first time they have really inhabited my bird house and bred 🥰🐦
Thanks for including your fans on your life journey!!
I never saw the tracks before or where they were compared to where the house and everything sits. Kinda cool. You'll have to take pics of the new neighbors that take up residence in the new hotel :)
Lol. I think you needed a bigger bit. Good thing the screw didn't strip.
Good job Carlos! Practice makes perfect.
I would love to have insect hotels but may have to content myself with the odd bee home for the native bees. Wooden structures like that would unfortunately attract termites here in Western Australia 😢
I can't use a power drill either. We all have things we're good at and other things we struggle with. Such is life
Great video. You guys will try anything. I love that about you.
You're inspiring me to get going on a mason bee house -- but mason bee houses are a lot smaller! Your insects have it really good! 🐝
I missed seeing your carpentry skills Carlos 😂
I would love to see an update with the finished project - especially the birdhouse part!!
Yes!
There’s a birdhouse part? I must have missed a few videos. I’d wear gloves around wood and old nails, otherwise looking good 😊
Carlos, YOU ARE SO GOOD!!
❤️
There are pleanty of creature that like to eat slugs (in Norway, also), so we can let them be.
Do not use power tools while standing on unreliable surfaces!
You boys need to be wearing work gloves you are asking for splinters
You are both just delifgtful. Cant get enough of you!!!
You never know what the two of you will be doing next. I hope your insect tenants appreciate all of your hard work! This is a fun idea!
The biggest insect hotel in the world! I hope there are enough plants etc to feed them all...
/warning warning --- flashbacks of the GINGER BREAD HOUSE~!!! Use more frosting ......oh wait....screws....screw all the things....// Ok it's great - good job both of you!!
😅❤️
Cool, an insect hotel and a restaurant for the birds ! 😎
❤ You are both so good!
What a wonderful thing to do for your environment and it’s inhabitants! Bravo!
☝🏽Ladder rule: always maintain 3 points of contact (safety and steady/balance.)
Thank you!
23:17 is my favourite part of this video 🤣🩷
It's always fun when the power tools come out! Looking forward to seeing the completed project. BTW, I wore one of your shirts to a small, local fiber festival and some folks recognized you/your channel/merch! Thanks for sharing!
❤️❤️
Definite improvement & growth😂
You both are so Goood !!! This is a huge insect hotel !!!
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Oh my goodness!! The drilling and screwing Shenanigans were out of control here! So good! Thank you for the laughter! The Workman's Safety Board would have passed out!!!🤣
We hope they never see this one!
Yes you must screw it properly 😳😂
Oh good, now you have a ladder....
Finally, Arne, you get your tower! Even if you have to surrender it to the insects 😉❤️❤️❤️. Carlos, you’re a brave (& patient) man! 😂
Yay!
I bought the cutest little insect house, but have not been able to attract any insects to it yet. BUT I did have a HUGE centipede visit INSIDE my own house last week. Truly a world-class centipede, UGH.
😅❤️
Carlos, you have definitely improved your building skills! I am proud of you for your perseverance. Also proud of Arne' for his teaching patience. Crooked insect house is looking good.
❤️❤️
CARLOS , ARNE …. WHY DO YOU BUILD AN INSECT 🐞 HOTEL 🏨??????? At FIRST I THOUGHT IT WAS A WOOD 🪵 SHED FOR YOUR FIREPLACE……💝
We like insects
Boys, I'm commenting before I've even finished watching this. You two are such fun and have a lovely relationship!
Thank you so much, I hope you liked it!
😂how many insects do you have in Norway or how big are they😱
A sedum roof would be great. It attracts insects also
Quite a few, not that big
Whom else is having ginger bread house flashbacks???? Smile
😅😅
I think you guys are cool.
Carlos on the ladder. 😂😂😂
The insects are going to be very happy. And Carlos you didn't finish your thought 'let me know what you think of my screwing skills" should it be?
❤️
So much fun to watch them do the creative outdoors work!
Whoop Whoop so super cool Arne, and you so made Carlos feel so comfortable and a part of it even though he hates heights , lol. Love the video and the Insect come bird house xox
Love you guy's to bitz
Thank you!!
Are you sure this is an insect palace/hotel? With birds living in the penthouse it seems more like a palace for the birds with restaurants on the mezzanine and lower levels:)😂 Very nice:)
Ooh, that is funny
Another comment...your ideas for this are so clever, Arne!! What kind of insects are you wanting to attract?
All kinds as they make our garden come to life!
Do we see the completed project?
It looks like a first class insect hotel! When there is a bird house on the top, the birds will have an all-you-can-eat buffet. 😄
Thank you!
That’s an insect mansion. 😁
Would have been easier to drill pilot holes before putting in the screw. Very interesting structure and I am sure it will be widely used.
Thank you for the tip
Thank you guys! Such joy to see you ❤
Do not try to get rid of slugs, the have their own jobs and raccoons will eat them (people can eat snails and slugs too).
We don’t have racoons in Norway. They are only found in North America.
Do the train go by your house,I live close to the track as well but there are no trains here anymore…
The train has been discontinued
Poor Carlos! Freja's looking chipper! Great insect palace, Arne! ♥🦘🦘🦘
Things are serious when Arne and Carlos revert to Norwegian.
😅❤️❤️
I still don't understand the need for an insect hotel, but it's a good video nonetheless. 😊
Insects have a very important function. Without insects, we would not have a garden. Because of climate change, many insects are disappearing. The function of our insect hotel is to give them a place to hibernate in the winter. We are trying to save our insects - so we can save our garden.
why does the insect house have to be so big? and what if you host some less desirable insects, such as wasps?
We like to build big things!
Very roomy accommodations for your bug friends.
We hope we will get a lot of visitors!
