I toured a GM plant in Van Nuys, California (prior to closing) and the production line was mixed as well. They produced various X and F body cars from different GM divisions on the same line all mixed together similar to what David shows here. Though, I'm sure they were not using any of the quality controls as parts were sometimes hanging off cars as they came down the line. LOL

It was very interesting seeing the Toyota Production System in action. Team member, team leader and group leader are different from what most people in the United States are familiar with. Team leaders are highly skilled team members. At many big 3 manufacturers only senior managers are allowed to stop the line (short of a life and death emergency). We've all seen the "conveyor belt" production line (not what was shown here). The worker walks along the production line with the car. He then has to "retrace" and walk back to the beginning. This is waste, non-useful work. It looks like Toyota has minimized this. Lots of interesting detail if you know where to look. Very good!
