How much starch/carbohydrates did they feed them to get overweight?
(1 bowl = 130 calories) 10 bowls of white rice in a day is 1300 calories. And you are still calorie deficient below the 2200-2400 daily calorie.
That's 3 bowls of rice in the morning, 3 bowls of rice at lunch and 4 bowls of rice for dinner.

I distinctly remember the summer when all of the big soda companies switched from sugar to high fructose corn sweetener. We all noticed that Coke and Pepsi had a slightly different taste. The crazy thing is, those dates corelate with the increase in fatty liver disease from your chart.

During my regular check-ups and related blood tests for about 15 years doctors have been remarking, "hmmm, looks like you have a fatty liver. Are you a heavy drinker?" When the answer was no, and I asked what was causing it, they would say, 'hmm, don't know. Well, there's no problem so just let me know if you do develop a problem." Then they would go on to comment that I had high triglycerides. I would ask why that is since I had adjusted my diet to reduce fat intake. "Hmmm, don't know." And they were happy I was eating more rice and pasta in place of meat. And so on, through the development of pre-diabetes up to the brink of diabetes. Thank goodness for the information available on youtube. I'm addressing the problems myself with the help of guys like Dr. Fung.

I totally relate with that! I also went trough the pre-diabetes...diabetes odyssey! Without a single word of advise regarding high carbs, etc. The ONLY thing was pills and more pills! This went for a few years! Until the absolutely null results.
In fact not just null results, I was getting worse!!
Lead me to try and find an answer. In this case on the internet. Dr. Fung videos came to the rescue and, and, and... Intermittent fasting and Keto= NO diabetes, high blood pressure, etc.
It's that simple, cheap, fast and extremely effective! What's not to like it?! LOL 😂
Without some real expertise guidance. I continued doing the "traditional" diet. With all the carbs/starch, etc. Just like millions others, I was killing myself one bite at a time! Without knowing!

Same here, same problems, same reactions from MD's. Realized that most doctors only know what Big Pharma tells them. (I was a nurse for 47 years) Doctors used to treat diseases/illnesses - now they only treat symptoms ("There is a pill for that!") I brought that up with my internist, who admitted that I was correct. However, she is one of the rebel doctors who does not buy into all the Big Pharma hype - she told me that I could reverse my type 2 DM with a proper keto diet, and has recmmended various herbal products for other health concerns, some of which she uses herself. A rare doctor in this day and age!

I have been following Dr. Fung's suggestions for about 1 year. Most of my diabetic symptoms were gone in 10 weeks. But, I suppose that my insulin resistance is still a problem. When I relapse and eat a high carb meal, my fasting glucose level become elevated and stays elevated for about 1 week. On a more positive note, during my last annual checkup, my a1c and fasting glucose level are no longer considered diabetic or even prediabetic. So, I guest I am managing my condition well. I think I have a lot more work ahead of me.

One in particular, a nurse practitioner, was FIRED after a couple went and complained about him recommending fasting. The thing about it is that he is so caring and knowledgeable. A low-carb diet primarily focuses on reducing carbohydrate intake and emphasizes foods that are relatively lower in carbohydrates. Some common low-carb diet foods include:

After several liver scan since I've reduced my early signs of cirrhosis and my weight down to 194lbs. I had hepatitis b as a youth and found I also had hepatitis c in 2005. Not good, but thanks to the infectious disease clinic at the VA I got the treatment for c and prevented the resurgence of the b virus. While I not out of the woods, I'm doing pretty darn good and may be able to avoid a liver transplant.

You must be careful not to stuff children with candy / other carbohydrates or you'll burn out the B cells in the pancreas and then they can develop type 1 diabetes. As well many adults have been developing type 1 as well. Our Liver is a major hub of us being healthy. 16+ hours a day of fasting is a good start to reversing NAFLD. Also, I eat lots of chia seeds. It helps. Thanks for reading. Peace.

So is understanding how your body works a cure or a treatement? At the minimum it’s knowledge, but I feel cured nonetheless.

@@SimonWoodburyForget You are just very lucky to be ''genetically balanced'' that allows you to eat all that and be sedentary too. I have a sister like you, she eats more than I do, never exercises, never gains weight. I was not so lucky. I was born with a belly, I do not remember a time I did not have a big round belly. Nothing, I did helped, to this day.

I am 37, had NAFLD for a few years watching it get worse and worse. I ate 5-6 times a day thinking it was healthy. Never skipping breakfast I was soooo hungry by 11 if I had no snack, that I would get a headache. Skipping lunch was unthinkable and I felt sleepy after it. I never liked heat but I noticed I started to feel so bad in hot summers I was no use for my family.I gained more and more weight, thing not extreme, 105kg by 1.9m tall. I finally decided to change after my last doctor visit. I started with healthy Keto, then added IF skipping breakfast. First with coffee plus mct oil, then just water. Now after 2 months I can skip breakfast and by lunchtime I really don't want to eat. I lost 10 kg in 2 months with no real exercise but the best part - I completely fixed my liver. ultrasound and blood tests confirmed all in norm. I can not believe this success and I feel so much better. I plan to keep going and gradually increase my activity. Big thank you to you Dr. Fung for what you do.

Months ago I had bloodwork done for a checkup. I’m overweight (I’ll be 48 next month) and wanted to start taking care of myself. My triglycerides and liver enzymes were all in the normal range. Recently, I’ve been having discomfort on my right side and having issues with laying and sleeping on that side. I knew I had gallstones for years, but was worried something more was going on. I asked my dr for a complete abdominal ultrasound. I found out through the ultrasound that I have a non alcoholic fatty liver! The blood tests were not accurate. I am planning on fasting, trying to clean up my diet, herbs and acupuncture etc. I wanted share this in hopes someone sees this and gets an ultrasound. Also if you are 45 and over please get a carotid artery ultrasound. It’s super important to see how much plaque is in your system. Especially going to your brain. I found out my right carotid is actually slightly twisted and there is some plaque. The American diet is killing us. Fasting and clean eating are the answer

I did my blood test yesterday after 5 weeks of 100% no carbohydrates no sugar no fruits no starch no red meat diet. My Liver panel test result shown AST , ALT , GGT level all perfect!
Far from its top range. Just 5 weeks. My fatty liver is reversed to healthy normal. I lost 4-5kg just from dieting and stop eating after 7pm till next day lunch. 2 meals a day. Only boiled using water, steam Fish, tofu, cabbage broccoli veggies, chicken breast, black coffee no sugar for afternoon lunch and green tea no sugar during evening dinner not later than 7pm. After 7pm I fast till next day lunch 12pm. The fasting time is extremely important as this time allows digestion and some hunger which makes our body burn the fat within without exercising. Exercising barely able to reach the fat around our liver. So fasting is the effective way. I had No milk (contain high and high sugar) . No snacks. No all kind of bread which still are carbohydrates. No omega fish oil. No cake. No biscuits. No rice.
No noodles. No fruits especially as it's fructose are directly process only by our liver!
Just 5 weeks and fatty liver is back to normal with proven liver function blood test compared to my previous test result 5 weeks ago. I feel very lively light and positive. I lost 5kg. Also My cholesterol and sugar level were also extremely good blood test result! I m looking way younger and my body is nicer too.
I m 33 years old male. Non smoker non alcoholic. Didn't work in a toxic environment. I didn't exercise. But I ate much rice, fatty red meat, and milk and cookies and fruits. I slept late before. Now I kicked those bad habit n bad diet. After recovered from fatty liver, I continue my way of eating n fasting n sleeping time. I reintroduced some healthy carbohydrates back into my diet. Such as some corn carrot, some wheat bread, potatoes, some fruits, some rice. Remember not to take fruits everyday as fruits are high in fructose which cause diabetes. Please make sure u do not overdo it. I really mean only some. Lack of discipline and taking it for granted will cause regrets. Legalon supplement is useful as well. I'm sharing for mankind and for those who were helpless from useless doctors. And I'm sharing in memory of my late father who passed away due to end stage liver disease.
Months later I did followed up on ultrasound and report shown my liver is perfectly healthy, also my kidney and pancreas and gallbladder. Since then I resume back to normal diet which include some fruits and carbohydrates. I continue to exclude fast food, oily and unhealthy food. Please bear in mind that fruits and carbohydrates must be consume in moderation. And fruits cannot be consume everyday to prevent diabetes!
I have kept all my blood test and ultrasound comparing before and after report. And I will continue to test yearly.

I love this man. Ever since my first water fast and stumbling upon the Obesity Code book, my perspective on health and diet is forever shifted. Currently watching your lecture with Dr. Nadia on PCOS and every single thing now clicks with nafld/fatty muscle/insulin resistance/metabolic syndrome/pcos and all it's sx (high testosterone & low SHBG/hirsutism/acne/scant ovulation etc). Thank you Dr. Fung to the moon and back. Luckily my A&P and Pathology classes help me understand more of this than surface level, but your intense knowledge coupled with how you teach is so so stellar. Your info/books should be required learning in high school curriculum or even pre-puberty for anyone that consumes food. I am so grateful for you💙

There is one variable that you may be missing here, and that's Choline. Choline is required to export fats from the liver. Choline deficiency has been shown to induce fatty liver on pretty much any diet in PEMT knockout mice (PEMT is the gene that allows us to produce a limited amount of choline indigenously). If you're low carb diet group ate more eggs, liver, or other choline rich foods, this might also account for the benefit. Dietary fat has to be exported through the liver in the same way, so I'm guessing that what the diet actually did was reduce overfeeding with some possible benefit from increased dietary choline.

Many of the medical web sites say cut back on eggs if diagnosed with NAFLD, but the wholistic web sites say eggs are ok, even beneficial for helping to reverse it. I raise chickens and get pasture raised organic eggs, so can I eat 2 a day?

Hi Dr. Fung. It's a great educational video. I just read your book, THE OBESITY CODE. I loved it.
Also, watching your videos since i started my ketogenic lifestyle and one-meal-a-day intermittent fasting(6/2022), I reversed my pre-diabetes, hypertension, stage 3 kidney disease (current creatnine 1.1, egfr 84), and completely reversed my insulin resistance.
My fasting insulin is 4.3, A1C 4.6 and fasting glucose 72. US of abdomen showed normal liver, no fatty liver.
    Thank you. Best wishes. 😊
