Streets Of SanFrancisco... The Buddy Rich line still cracks me up.... Do you remember the old Donal Logue Cabby videos on Mtv? He was going on about a new cop show, but they commercials never mentioned when it was on... high-larious... "It's like Dan Tanna, but I can never find it." hahahah
The Beastie Boys’ Sabotage is such a fascinating departure from their earlier sound, and it’s awesome that you’re experiencing that shift! To understand the significance of Sabotage, it helps to know a bit about their journey. The Beastie Boys started as a hardcore punk band in New York City in the early 1980s before transitioning into hip-hop. Tracks like Paul Revere (which you’ve already loved) established them as pioneers of rap-rock, blending irreverent humor with their sharp lyricism and beats. But Sabotage brings them full circle to their punk roots. By the time they released Ill Communication in 1994, the Beasties had evolved artistically and socially, exploring more experimental and eclectic sounds. Sabotage reflects their hardcore punk origins but with a polished, rebellious energy that channels their growth as musicians. The song is chaotic yet meticulously crafted, making it a perfect anthem for their ethos: breaking boundaries while staying true to who they are. This genre shift wasn’t just personal for them-it also symbolized their refusal to be pigeonholed as “just” a rap group. It was a bold statement to critics and fans alike, showcasing their versatility and passion for music across genres. And let’s not forget that Sabotage’s iconic music video, directed by Spike Jonze, became a cultural moment that cemented their legacy. So, when you’re stunned by the genre difference, you’re witnessing not only a throwback to their roots but also a testament to their fearlessness in embracing change. Sabotage proves they weren’t just artists-they were innovators who constantly pushed the envelope. Full circle, indeed!
1994 Lollapalooza Randall's Island NY. Beasties hit the stage while the sun went down. It was fully dark during the silence before the final verse in Sabotage. Then the bass line, the drums and all the lights and "BWAAAAHHH" and the pit was jumping sky high. One of the best days ever. It should be a holiday.
B a s c i n Go b a s t i n o b a s t i n Go it was the fastest song ever written it's 4 seconds long and that's all they do is the s t i n Go v a s t i n Go it was off one of their first albums when they were punk rock as fuk
I was stage crew for the main stage of Wakarusa in 2011 and between sets before the headliner the came on, people in the crowd were knocking around dozens of beach balls. This song started playing and the crowd started burst into a frenzy and the balls were bouncing more erratically. A tour manager had me a 5 other guys form a line on the front of the stage to protect the artist and their equipment from the deluge of beach balls. The crowd thought we were part of the act and the intensity went past 11 with anticipation. The amount of energy that was buzzing was incredible! That was my literal 5 minutes of fame.
The writing of this song was awesome. MCA came up with the bassline before the other guys arrived for rehearsal. Mike D. Immediately loved it and laid down drum tracks. It sat on the shelf as an instrumental until Adrock took the track to Mario C’s to record. He set his mic up facing Mario and proceeded to just freestyle roast Mario like he was an enemy stifling their creativity.
Since their recording studio was the old set for the BARNEY MILLER SHOW (a 70s cop sitcom)and most of their influences are from the 70s, they recorded this video in their parking lot and the hotel across the street from G-Son studios in L.A. They kept most of the show set as original as possible, but added indoor B-ball hoop and half pipe for skating in the basement.
Saw these guys at Lollapalooza 1994 in Barrie, ON. I wish I could remember it more I was pretty wasted. And I lost my camera. This is one of the most versatile and creative musical acts to ever exist. They crossed multiple genres from punk rock to hip hop to alternative rock to electronica and had some jazz and funk elements to their sound as well. Sabotage was released in 1994 on the Ill Communication LP. It goes down easily as a top 10 track of theirs.
You nailed it when you said you could picture people going wild to this live-what you’re describing is called a “mosh pit”! Mosh pits are common at punk, hardcore, and some rock or metal concerts where the crowd expresses their energy through aggressive dancing, pushing, and jumping into each other (all in good fun… usually). The goal isn’t to hurt anyone-it’s more about releasing raw energy and connecting with the music on a visceral level. There’s even an unspoken “mosh pit etiquette,” like helping someone up if they fall or making space if someone needs out. Given Sabotage’s chaotic, high-energy vibe, it’s totally the kind of track that gets a pit going. The fast tempo, the raw guitars, and that rebellious energy make it a perfect storm for moshing. It’s cool that you picked up on that vibe, even without knowing the term! If you ever get a chance to see a live concert performed of this song, you’d definitely witness a pit!
The Beastie Boys started out as a punk band in the late 70's/early 80's, then jumped in hip hop with their single Cookie Puss. They ocassionally go bask to their roots with songs like Sabotage, Mullethead, and Square Wave In Unison. They also rereleased their pre Licensed To Ill stuff on an album called Some Old Bullshit.
I'll tell you, the clickbait answer is master of puppets, specifically reacted to by a young black person. I've watched a dozen versions of that because it's always a great moment when they figure out who the master of puppets is.
been to several beastie boys concerts, first one was somewher 1989, then it was rap concerts, later i had concerts that were strictly instrumental, and yeah moshpits were going on
This B right here is a play on the cop shows from the ‘70’s. Like super cheesy. Just poking fun, having a good time. I think it’s lit!! Hip Hop at its finest.
a mosh pit is a crazy rough place that isn't meant for the light of heart. its a place to just expect to get bloody and its fun for us ruffians. The circle within the pit that your describing (its like a hurricane among the clouds) is a place of madness that you do not want to be in. That is the place to go if you want to expect a broken nose or fractured orbital socket. it may have changed in the last few decades but i seriously doubt it
Saw them when I was 13 at Lollapalooza 94 and their set definitely rocked the hardest, harder than Smashing Pumpkins or anyone else there and as for the mosh pits it was definitely happening but chill tho I nearly got squashed being a little kid in the middle of all that. Their page in the Lollapalooza program zine was genius too, with mosh pit etiquette drawn in 60s comic book style and telling guys not to perv on girls in the crowd, I wish I had held on to that piece of history
I'm old enough to say, here in L.A., I saw them on Debut Tour (w/ Fishbone @ Hollywood Palladium), and 3rd album tour (w/ Cypress Hill @ Universal Studios), and they busted out the instruments for the punk set, as well as MC work. We did "MOSH" to these fast songs. KEEP IT UP, DUDE

Every concert in the 90s ended up with a mosh pit somewhere. Even Rick Astley, TLC, and Whitney Huston. No one could stop the mosh. (Ok, maybe not every concert.)
There's a good video of them performing this at the 1994 Grammys. That was the first time I saw them playing their own instruments. This song was a huge cross-over hit, charting high on R&B and Rock charts...
good hyped up song, lyricism and a great movie too - that's why everyone said to do this one next... I can't wait to see how your musical journey progresses
The most interesting piece of lure about this video is probably the Spike Jonez angle. He was the director/creator of this video. Spike is regarded as one of the top 5 or so music video directors ever and this was one of his best, it's objective. And 1994 was probably Spike's most prolific year making vids before focusing on other projects mainly Jackass. Most of the Beasties vids in the 90's were directed by Adam Yauch aka Nathanial Hornblower aka MCA!
I can't stop watching your videos. It keeps sucking me in. It's entertaining, keep going. Thanks for the donation link. I wanted to shoot you some money the other day and couldn't figure out how.
dude... the last video they made is so freakin' good! it's almost 30 minutes long, including end credits, but i'm sure you'll love it and won't even notice how long it is while watching it. the only thing is, you shouldn't react to it until after you've reacted to Fight For Your Right (To Party), which was their first international hit, because it's a sequel. Fight For Your Right (To Party) ua-cam.com/video/eBShN8qT4lk/v-deo.html Beastie Boys - Fight For Your Right (Revisited) Full Length ua-cam.com/video/evA-R9OS-Vo/v-deo.html
This came out in the mid 1990s, so about a decade after License to Ill. I have a suggestion, really out of left field: Schoolhouse Rock. They were short, catchy educational "commercials" that came on during Saturday morning cartoons. Taught civics/history (I'm Just A Bill), math (3 Is A Magic Number), and Language/English (Conjuction Junction, What's Your Function?). There are lots of them, and the songs are so catchy, you'll be singing them all day, and maybe learn something. In elementary school, we had to memorize the Preamble to the US Constitution (We the people....). All of us kids already knew it, because we could sing it from Schoolhouse Rock. The only students who struggled were those whose parents wouldn't let them watch TV. Heh.
I don't know if its true or not, but I remember this video being, in part, a response to a complaint about them not playing any instruments. So for this song they all played instruments, I think it was drums, organ/synthesizer, and guitar.

Letterman performance is awesome.😎
MCA. The lost pioneer. This band changed music
And they were never classically trained. All self taught.
You are gonna want to watch their 1999 live performance form Glasgow Scotland to see how hype the crowd gets. It’s on UA-cam.
Yes!!!!!
Word.
Just watched it .... WOW Insane!!!!
Their best performance was Letterman, but I agree with you 100%
I couldn’t agree more. One of their best live performances ever!
The video is a spoof on 1970s cop shows like Starsky & Hutch, SWAT, Baretta, Kojak, and Hawaii Five-O.

Beasties at Lolla in Chicago was a mosh pit of epic measure 1994.
The Beastie Boys were a punk band before they were Hip-Hop.

My first mosh pit was at Lalapalooza during the Beastie Boys!!
8:16 Yeah they definitely performed at shows with moshing / slam dancing. I saw them at Lollapalooza in 1994 and there was a big mosh pit for sure
Same same same
The mosh pit at Lalaplooza was fucking amazing. MCA hung that bass note out for a solid 10 seconds and the pit was BOILING.
Their shows ended up being MASSIVE, and yes there were mosh pits at times, and crowd surfing.
The Beastie Boys started out as a punk band in the late 70's/early 80's, then jumped in hip hop with their single Cookie Puss.

Saw them live at Lollapalooza in the 90s and they were amazing.
THE SUGARHILL GANG - " Apache (Jump On It) (Official Video) " Old School 80's HIP-HOP and FUNK Classic Jams 🔥 highly recommend this song too.
beastie boys were originally a hardcore punk group, bar scene NY, 1 album punk before Fight for your right
We have joked for a very long time that the "Sabotage" video is the best cop show of the 1990s.
This came out in 1994. The live on Letterman will really blow your mind.
Yes!! Their performances were amazing. The last time I crowd surfed was at one of their shows in 1998-during their punk set.
Beastie Boys - Gratitude 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I'll tell you, the clickbait answer is master of puppets, specifically reacted to by a young black person. I've watched a dozen versions of that because it's always a great moment when they figure out who the master of puppets is.
Do DJ Quik "Tonite"
Make no mistake. That is Mike D on the drums, MCA on the bass, and King Ad-Rock on the guitar. They work this song out!
been to several beastie boys concerts, first one was somewher 1989, then it was rap concerts, later i had concerts that were strictly instrumental, and yeah moshpits were going on
I remember when this dropped. I was a Freshman or Sophmore, one of the two. 96 I think, so Sophmore. Great times before the world went bye bye.
This was also on the first Star Trek reboot with Chris Pine. its badass...
So happy to see you wearing that shirt again. It's my favorite of all your shirts. It looks great on you.
This B right here is a play on the cop shows from the ‘70’s. Like super cheesy. Just poking fun, having a good time. I think it’s lit!! Hip Hop at its finest.
They performed this on "Late Night with David Letterman"... It's not very clean but the energy was awesome!
Beastie Boys, Id say 91, South Beach Miami, balcony seats....BADASS!

@ You're right. I didn't see a good video before.
This was like ‘94-‘95 when this came out if I remember correctly. There’s a great live performance on Letterman or Conan you can see on UA-cam
This was a bit of a throwback to their punk rock roots. But, that scratching on the turntable, tho!
Now you must do Sabotage live at David Letterman's. Epic!!!
That dancing is called Moshing. Stands for Move Over Shit Head. Super fun. Love the channel.
Much Love sent out from Missouri Boogie 🐻 Keep up the good work
They were a punk band first, their dive I to rap was a joke at it ....that backfired into the hip hop legands they became.
I’m gonna guess there’s been some mosh pits at beastie boys shows. That’s what they’re called. Mosh pits.
Please watch/listen to the following:

3. Get it together
4. Skills to pay the bills

They were not "guest" they were the host.
good hyped up song, lyricism and a great movie too - that's why everyone said to do this one next... I can't wait to see how your musical journey progresses
Boogie... ya gotta say with the small sample size of their music, they have a very diverse range of styles all with varying degrees of rap/hip-hop.
Hell yeah, Beasties punch to the dome!
Watch sabotage live on David letterman 1994 i think. They play the instruments live it’s awesome
I apologize to my neighbors. I blast this song at home when I need to get hyped up! 🔥🔥
Go watch this song LIVE on The David Letterman show!
Hey Boogie...Nice & Smooth "Sometimes I Rhyme Slow"... you're ears will thank you...👍
The most interesting piece of lure about this video is probably the Spike Jonez angle.
Drop” by the Pharcyde is a good video/track to react to on your new channel
I was about to DM you somehow to listen to this video- it is THE Beasties vid you had to watch. THX
they did this live many times - search for the Letterman performance
To really appreciate this, you really need to see the live version on David Letterman.

Mosh pit is the term you're looking for.
I think you mean a moshpit for your question.
Its called Headbanging.
See them perform this on LETTERMAN
dude... the last video they made is so freakin' good! it's almost 30 minutes long, including end credits, but i'm sure you'll love it and won't even notice how long it is while watching it.
the only thing is, you shouldn't react to it until after you've reacted to Fight For Your Right (To Party), which was their first international hit, because it's a sequel.

Heh.
Blowfly's Rap - Who Did I Eat Last Night!
I don't know if its true or not, but I remember this video being, in part, a response to a complaint about them not playing any instruments. So for this song they all played instruments, I think it was drums, organ/synthesizer, and guitar.
You are talking about a Mosh Pit. People could get hurt in those when some people get carried away. It's fun though!☠
