We had ladder winches that we built in our welding shop back in 1972. We used them on extension ladders to lift O6D compressors on and off roofs. 1 man could replace a semi by himself. Lately these ladder lifts/winches are illegal per OSHA regulation ladder rules. Just like the stinger one man crane we use to pull up on the roof and could lift compressors, refrigeration and AC condensing units, and exhaust fans. They were great while it lasted, again not permitted per OSHA.
I agree with you. The problem is that when someone using these homemade items has an accident, then the insurance co. & OSHA gets involved & now the people who follow safety rules & regs have extra burdens put on them. My advice, hire a crane to lift all your compressors & tools to the roof using a heavy gauge wire basket available at industrial supply warehouses.

I was thinking about small versions of the crane with trolley for some of these 2hp condenser fan motors so don’t drop dam thing through a coil Also thought about a tee handle with a set screw collar to shaft so have something to hold onto or hook winch cable hook too These chiller fan motors are getting heavier I’m getting older

Definitely saves legs when by yourself on the job use the same concept on rough ins with big fittings or nesting a bunch together taps wyes and ells tapers I've seen two ladders used as lift for a 3 ton package unit kind of sketchy but they got it up in one pc for a single story only good idea no crane fee waiting great time saver cost savings passed to customers nominal fee for service.
Love the cranes very creative... you can also use it for your 13 year old boy when he discovers girls hook it thur their belt loop keep them in sight at all times until you're ready send them to school with a Tracker collar no all joking aside you made some really great projects great job 👍
Been wondering how I was going to get stuff topside as an older newbie without breaking my back! Have looked at the ladder hoists, but the COST!! This is the PERFECT solution. That will be in my truck! LOL!! Harbor Freight saves the day again! I don't have any of the scrap metal, but I know my steel supplier sells theirs for .06 a pound so... Nice MIGn there brother! Those joints should give you a lot of trouble-free service. I may run mine to Lima Powder if I think it's good enough. That should make it last.
Thanks, my dad was a welder at General Dynamics and tought me. I don't do it everyday so it usually takes me a few inches to get my groove back. You could either go to Allen County Fab or Century in Van Wert for metal. That green metal that it's made out of won't rust anytime soon. I only painted it black to make it look nicer. Just throwing this out there, Don't try to move your eyes to see what object I'm panning to next, let my camera move to the object for you. That's probably why it's such a problem. I can't set up a tripod and frame every shot, I'm lucky I can even record these, most employers won't let you.
Cool ideas. I’m curious about thus ladder crane raising a small condenser. Looks like I would have to lean way out to get the drill on. I wonder if the drill point could be facing the operator?
There's a few videos on UA-cam that has one just about like it but it's a little heavier Duty. One major thing to consider is make sure you're wearing your PPE and harness when you're doing this because you could get an OSHA violation. Also there's a possibility that because the ladder is not being used by manufacture specs that OSHA could also site you as a violation. ***As always use at your own risk and verify these things before attempting this. *** Thanks 4 watching!
You could mount it how you prefer and use a pulley to make the angle down. I haven't verified the max capacity yet but I think It could handle 300lbs . If You reinforce the 45 degree axle with a 45 degree brace it could do alot more.

You probably could if you drilled out the metal and welded onto the worm drive. I had some problems needing more power from my drill so I redesigned it with a electric winch, it works allot better now and it works in more applications. Check out the video for that one.

I don't see why it wouldn't. That's not what I designed it for but the electric winch version that I made is capable of 1500 lb. You have to remember the weight limit of your ladder is usually only 300lbs if you're lucky, not to mention if OSHA was watching you might get a fine.
That was L channel that I cut and welded together. Check out the newest video called the ultimate ladder crane. I stopped using this bracket and made one that does 5 types of lifting.
I wouldn't try anything much bigger than a hermetic compressor if I was going up the roof hatch, the only time I used it was for a 5 ton rtu compressor and I used the strait ladder. If I wanted to pull a real big compressor up the hatch way, I would rather use the second uni-strut crane I showed because you can slide the load left or right. Far as constitution, I pieced the ladder crane together piece by piece, I didn't have any layout planes. I can measure it out for you if you like, just contact me through Facebook.
Just some advice from a retired contractor, I was like you making my own hardware. Don’t let OSHA see you using any of this. You will fined out buying the manufacture product was cheap compared to the fine. I also worked as Safety Director for a Excavating Co. My suggestion is for you to get up to speed on OSHA. I appreciate what you're saying, I know that I need to wear a harness and all the other PPE that goes along with that, which I have. I also have my 10-hour card which is usually plenty for what I do. (I've had several people ask me to build this and I have rejected all offers because I know the legal liabilities that would go along with it.) It reminds me of the question I asked during safety class "how do you make a secured, approved rigging point as the first person on the roof when you can't be secured when you're making the secured connection." It's like the chicken and the egg, which one came first? They couldn't quite answer it in a way that didn't show that at one point you're going to be unsafe until you install the anchor.
Something to remember. These are fine to use at home, but when taken onto a job site that is covered by state or OSHA regs, like hoisting an air con unit onto a paying customers roof, you are using a lifting device that has no engineering behind it, isnt rated or tested for max safe load and isnt inspected for safety by any regulatory agency. The liability is all on you for any damage or injury. 2 6:03 Uni strut or whatever you call it is for hanging pipe or electrical conduits, not as structural members in hoisting applications. This little monorail hoist is scary. Buy a load rated and engineered one from Harbor Freight. 3 A homemade hook???? You gotta be kidding me. Accident looking for a place to happen. I realize you are only lifting to rooftops, and probably under 500 pounds, but even ten pounds, dropping from 20 feet can kill you. 4 In this day and age of law suit hungry idiots, if someone makes a ladder hoist as you recommend in the video, and gets hurt, He can sue the crap out of you. I am a retired crane and hoist inspector and journeyman Boilermaker fitter welder.
Do you think maybe that's why I have not made these and sold them? I have friends in the legal system and that's the reason why I put in my videos that they're all for entertainment only and not instructional videos. Also I've never recommended lifting a whole air conditioner on a roof that is totally stupid. There are actual manufacturers of these that are using them to lift whole units onto the roof. Somehow he got it OSHA approved and it's on my video where I went down to ahr 2022 and I talked to the guy and did an interview with him. I fully understand what you're saying and I agree that's the reason why I haven't done anything more with it than use it for my own personal use.

That recovery coil could have dual purposes. After the job's done, back at the ranch, it makes a great instant adult beverage cooler.

I use one long rope and have hooks on both ends. Then I hook onto those washers. 👍👍

Also I've never recommended lifting a whole air conditioner on a roof that is totally stupid. There are actual manufacturers of these that are using them to lift whole units onto the roof. Somehow he got it OSHA approved and it's on my video where I went down to ahr 2022 and I talked to the guy and did an interview with him. I fully understand what you're saying and I agree that's the reason why I haven't done anything more with it than use it for my own personal use.
