AC Tripping Breaker What Else Should You Check?

- AC tripping the breaker can be a easy call but that doesn't mean you replace the part and jet. How do you make sure there is not other issues besides the obvious bad component. Let's go over that! This call was simple, but how many times do we forget about the other things we should be looking at during a service call and as a new Technician these are things that you should keep in mind before bouncing to the next call or you might be known as the callback King.

I think we need more basic calls. We need to teach the basics because their are a lot of hacks. People think they know. The sent me to another market my company has. The guy there didn't know he had to clear the sightglass. He was using the PT chart because he was doing AC for years. I couldn't tell him any different. I told my supervisors. I believe that as a trade and company, we need to move as one. This is science, not art. No interpretation.
I really learned to understand this craft from you and others from repetition. Drumming it into my brain like ROTE and it stuck til i found out the whys. Then it made sense and pulled together.
Thank you so much Sherwin, I really appreciate the kind words and I fully agree with what you're saying.
Taking it back to the basics. Nothing wrong with that. I admit....i haven't checked a capacitor in a long time. Granted, i don't work on equipment that usually have them, even the condenser fan motors are 3 phase and 1-3hp. Your video reminded me that i should check to see if the equipment has them and test them if they do. I remember the first time i ran into 460v single phase. I installed a 208v CFM....yup i let the smoke out. Its a reminder to be diligent. Great video as always Rick
I haven’t seen 460 1ph. Only 277v 1ph
Pick up a couple Turbo 200 Capacitors for the van, saves you a bunch of time heading to the supply house and comes in clutch on the weekend.
Billiance in the basics is what we should all strive for. Nice work as always Sir!
Thanks brother! I have a video of doing an oil change on a rack with four compressors, footage is over four hours long and my guy helping me got his uniform got in the picture quite a bunch so it would take forever to edit, but that’s the other alternative to what I put on here today. Just not a lot worthwhile to record lately or it’s bits and pieces of problem calls that have been dragging on.
One good upgrade to that meter is the little thermocouple adapter which I believe they sell as a combo adapter + k-type thermocouple .
The downside is that the adapter takes a battery , but the positives are that
1_ if you use the Bluetooth and connect via the Testo smart app then you've got a Bluetooth digital thermometer
2_ I've compared it to my dedicated digital thermometer and it's pretty damn accurate , way better that what I got on the Fluke multimeter with the brown thermocouple that came with .
I run my own company I just charged 500 for a dual capacitor , love this trade!
@jesselopez6394 it's the knowledge we get paid for not the part cost. People get that so confused
After years of watching your youtube videos i still love even the basic ones.
Thanks brother!
I am about 4 years into the trade 2 years full time experience with service/install. Always learning. But I like to see everything I enjoy the stupid small stuff and also the big commercial tough calls as I do everything, minus racks. We do lots of storages for farms so I really enjoy the large warehouse videos.
Thanks for the info, I appreciate the feedback on the videos!
I always enjoy the supermarket stuff, but that because thats my world. But we do work on a/c and self contains, so i enjoy all your videos. Thanks for sharing
@@Bassn1ck thanks brother!
That Testo meter is pretty slick, i gotta admit... but it still doesnt have the swiveling head like my ol SC680😆 now that i've had it i can't live without it.
On another note, great video, highly valuable lessons about taking pride in even the smallest of things we do on the job. Good luck out in the field, stay safe.
I love it! Thanks man!
You made a good job there Rick.
I was used to very tight spaces and used a very small amp clamp meter.
The brand is Kyoritsu. The older model I had was KEW snap 2033.
If you ever wish to try the real small one, look up that brand😬 AC and DC 300AMP the little guy
I'll have to check it out!
Rick , your channel is the best !
Wow, thanks!
Lennox HS26 condensers had a lot of 10MFD OFMs. For that reason our truck almost always have 60+10 70+10 and 80+10. It’s all about what makes sense in your area and what you normally work on. 👍 good rounded video.
This year I’ve seen two really odd 75MFD caps for ICP condensers.
I think you're onto something. I recently went on vacation, so I brought the van to the shop for maintenance. I have trust issues, so I take my expensive tools out for other people's safety. Anyway, I have to Propac as well as the MB5B. The bigger backpack feels lighter. I even think I have more tools in it because the MB5B is my service bag.
Nice work, boy has Carrier changed since I worked on their equipment. I had hospitals with all Carrier equipment in the old days. Way different now. Thanks for the video.
love all your videos Thay are enter tainting, and it is nice to see someone hew cares about doing
the job right i to Maintenace for a school -office building i have 22 of the rooftop units her
Thank you! 🙏
Nice change of pace Rick. I always enjoy all your content regardless of what it is. Thanks for putting it out.
Thank you!
I like the electrical. 😁👍
Thank you for the video. Easy piecy for you. Yes, please make more on ice cream machines. Ideal with Stoelting ones for DQ.
You can email me any time. That’s what we sell.
Good vid Rick, shame about the ice cream videos you don’t show much on.
Really enjoyed the ones you do have up though 👍🏼
Thank you! There’s not as many ice cream locations so the competition is much higher than in residential or Comercial.
Great video. Thank you for sharing. Is this RTU is 3 phase or single phase ? please. If possible. Could you make video how to 3 phase breaker panel, circuit breaker panel l looks like for 3 phase HVAC ? and how to lock out tag out for 3 phase power HVAC ?
This unit was single phase, explain to me a little clearer what you're looking for in a video? I think some of the words got messed up and didn't come through correctly and it's hard to understand what you're wanting.
Great video 👌
Thanks Take it back to the old school
4:24 Are those blue evap fans better than the traditional blowers? Advantages/disadvantages? I'm not an HVACR tech just curious/enthusiast
I would assume efficiency and simplicity but I don't know
The nice thing is they can be adjusted to exactly the static pressure that you're looking for the negative side is when they go bad not everyone has them in stock and it's not like you're gonna carry that on your truck so you're gonna have to make a trip back to the Supply house and hope that they have an in stock otherwise the people are gonna be screwed.
Nice work Rick.
two equal value capacitors in series makes 1/2 the rated value(give or take the tolerance of both).
beyond equal values and more than two in series, it will need calculated out, but it will always be less than the smallest rated capacitor and lower capacitance as more are connected in series.
it's best to avoid series, parallel and combinations for anything beyond low power motors, although it will work, they never tend to fail equally and equipment ends up running with one failed open.
It's pretty similar to the way resistors work in parallel, just like you said it's always smaller than the smallest resistor or the smallest capacitor if I remember correctly. The mathematical formula is a fractional and I don't do well with that.
very nice job, whats the multimeter you are using?
Testo 770-3
Capacitors depending on brand can range from $10 all the way up to $80 my experience the $10 ones work just fine I don't have a problem with honest attract companies my problem is all the ones I've dealt with in the past or not honest sorry became self-sufficient and at least fixing simple stuff
Great easy one Rick
Ice cream? Well, we know it’s not McDonalds, those guys drive armored cars. 😂
LOL nope I haven't had to there junk Taylor machines
Was it a toss-up between adding two capacitors together, or wiring in a separate 10mfd cap?
you could have done it several different ways. you could use two 35x5 in parallel and get the 70x10, you name the combo, anything would work to add up to it.
@@HVACRSurvival I was thinking 70x5 and 10 by itself.
Leave a note in the unit giving the size of the original capacitor. If the 70x5 or the 5 went bad, the tech might miss the fact that it was time to install 70x10.
Do they plan to get the right caps in stock, or is it a discontinued odball?
I'm surprised you left the plastic caps on that 410 unit 😂😂😂
The Dust caps?
Caps in series are like resistors in parallel
1/c1 + 1/c2 = 1/c total
Yeah I knew it was some funky equation like that which I don't remember how to do that🙄. I was going to show the formula when I edited it, but ran out of time.
@@HVACRSurvival if they're all the same capacitance it's easier you just divide by how many there are. So three 10 microfarads would be 3.33 microfarad
Turbo 200x
New Rick video 🥳
Run cap bandit! 🤣🤣🤙😎
If it was 3 phase, why would the compressor have a run cap?? Wouldn’t you have known that right away
Exactly. I left it in to show I make mistakes but I’m not afraid to show it. I caught my screw up within 20 to 30 seconds.
You like to show what you find hard? For Christ sake, you worked with NASA! You continually show thing I’ve never seen on any other channel. I bet residential bore you to tears: no challenges. You seem right at home with racks as well as commercial.
Thanks Mark, I appreciate the kind words!

Interesting video my friend, ... if you guys are looking for similar videos i have some uploaded
I’m a subscriber. Oh I just know it chap your ass not getting right capacitor. Supply houses are what they are.
Carrier doesn't even stock it from what I'm told. WTH
I find it hard to believe that you could not find a 10 µF capacitor
When did I say I could not find that on my truck.
Only asking you could’ve easily put on a 10 mic capacitor and a 70 by itself
When the duel goes out now, it’s gonna take out the 5 µF I believe you said you do service for this business is that correct?
@@jimconti8740 yeah we take care of some of their stuff. And it’s just a matter of opinion on whether you think the duel is gonna go out or if it’s just gonna be the 5mfd
Great idea , these kind of vids are good for the young'ens ... I enjoy the simple how-to things as well ... Thx
