    4:28 I believe all the black powder loads were maxed to fill the cases to stop bullet set back. The high velocity loads came later with the advent of smokeless loads. These HV loads were to be strictly used in Winchester 92s, Marlin 94s, and single shots. The revolvers and 1873s of the day just couldn't take it.

    • @samhouston1288
      @samhouston1288 2 роки тому +6

      Blackpowder cartridges need to be loaded to the max because air space in a blackpowder cartridge is dangerous. The cartridge has to be loaded so that all the space is filled up with powder, or some forms of filler. You even want the bullet to compress the powder somewhat. Bullet set back should not be an issue.
      On the HV loads, believe it or not, if you look at some of the origional boxes for it, some do actually list the 73' as being safe for the ammo. Would I recommend that today? Probably not, but they apparently did back then.

    • @cptdarling501
      @cptdarling501 2 роки тому +1

      Black powder cases were filled to the max because any less was a weak load. Modern day cowboy action shooters use fillers in reduced loads to speed up the shooting. Black powder works best with a slight compression. Air space in a reduced load produces inconsistent velocities but isnt as dangerous as large air space with smokeless powder.

    there is another reason besides the tiny rim of the 45 colt they didn’t use it in a rifle. the three common cases, 32/20,38/40 and 44/40, all have tapered cases. on extraction with fouling the tapered case will be free of the chamber at at the first small amount of movement whereas the straight wall 45 colt will drag in the chamber the whole length of the case.

    Speaking of modernized leverguns, I would love it if someone would develop a faster higher capacity loading system for them. I know it's blasphemy buy if someone sold a toggle locked lever action rifle in 9mm that took 33 round glock magazines and could easily mount a small red dot sight I would totally buy one. Most of the "modernized" lever actions on the market now are mechanically identical to historical lever guns just with fiber optic sights, a polymer stock, a parkerized finish on the metal, and usually they are in 30-30 or some other full powered rifle cartridge that doesn't have much capacity; that's cool and all but doesn't really seem truly modernized to me, in my view in order to be truly modern it needs to be able to accept modern optics, be in an intermediate rifle or modern pistol caliber, and have a faster method of reloading than the kings gate. I would love to hear other people's opinions on this. Thanks for the video Karl, it was excellent as always.

      There is always the browning BLR it can be had in 223 and uses detachable box magazines. I don't see why you couldn't make an extended 20 or 30 round mag for it.

    • @TheGremlin50cal
      @TheGremlin50cal 2 роки тому

      @@mgkleym That was my first thought as well but after looking into it I found some problems. The lever on the BLR and long ranger goes too far forward and would get in the way of a box magazine, you would have to make a short stroke kit to go with it and I don't know how that would work with the rack and pinion bolt. Also the rack and pinion lever guns like the BLR and the long ranger are notoriously difficult to disassemble/reassemble for cleaning, if I am going to have a lever gun that can fire more rounds than I would like it to be easy to clean.

      They did, for cavalry. If you mean why not a smokeless one? Bolt actions are better in a military context. They are much easier to make idiot proof, have fewer moving parts, are cheaper.

    My favorite response to the assault rifle argument on twitter is to the British the Kentucky long rifle was an assault weapon.
    All about perspective.

    A lever gun holds 13 .45 long colt cartridges. The same lever gun chambered in 10mm would hold 16 cartridges.. THAT would be a formidable piece of work. I wonder if anyone has thought of making one like that.. or do Semi Auto cartridges have issues? Yes, I know, they have no rim... but that could be worked around... right?

    I'd rather have a lever action rifle than a bolt action. With a decent set of sights, it's very competitive.

    idk, after the reloading gag, having the two images out of sync when Russell shoots makes this a strangely disorienting video. Perhaps the idea is that the lever gun is not out of date, so we need to rethink our ideas of temporal relationships?

    Man I’d love too see you guys do a skit of the alternate history of levergun adoption. One of you is the cranky general getting shoved in a closet or something.
