Those hikers at Springer Mountain must have been so jacked! Having Darwin walk up while you're getting ready to start the Appalachian Trail is like having Tiger Woods show up when you're teeing off at Pebble Beach!
My son and I met him on Springer last March, and it was very much the feeling you described.
@@allanscott798 He’s a legend and does so much for the backpacking community.
Not sure if I would go that far... 😂
@@DarwinOnthetrail You are right. I’d much rather meet you than Tiger Woods. 😁
Yep, Call him NImblewill Nomad Junior !!😎😊
Been a huge fan for a while Darwin, and you don't understand how excited I was when you said you use that Kuhl hat too. Ive had mine for 6 years and call it my lucky hat because I had an owl land on top of my head with it on when i was doing a section of the app trail with my buddies during spring break of my senior year of high school, and I have worn it for every camping and backpacking trip since.
Benton MacKaye was my great great uncle, it's awsome to see his work appreciated by so many people. Thankyou for making this video!
I classify your videos as pure art work. Your trip videos will never get old.
Wow, thanks! ❤️
It's trivial to most, but for those of us that live in these mountains it's nice to hear you say Appa-latch-un rather than the Appa-lay-shun that a lot of hikers use.
Have any plans to do a breakdown/review of the "budget" camera setup? The results look great so I'd be interested to see what you're working with!
I could just watch your videos for hours. You have such an enjoyable and ego-free energy, and your camera work, editing, and musical choices work so well together. Looking forward to part 2!
I have a full-size Canon 70D and got tired of lugging that around. I compared the M6 and M50 and opted for the Canon refurb M50 w/15-45 kit lens for just over $400 direct through Canon because I toss mine in my front bike bag. Got the Viltrox EF adapter and Speedbooster too, plus the 22mm/2.0, which makes the M50 super light and compact. I don't live stream so didn't care about the clean HDMI, plus there are workarounds for that. I really like the Canon color scheme and think your footage is ALWAYS excellent! Thanks and be safe out there!
Have been watching your videos for about a year now. Mostly gear reviews. This one was awesome and looked very professionally done. Stoked for the next few episodes.
Good call on getting off. That trail is like getting into a fight with someone who won't leave your nose alone. It punches you hard there early and keeps you dazed throughout with straight ups and downs all day. I just finished the Georgia part 2 days ago dissatisfied with my slow progress. Going back out tomorrow to catch where I left off in Ocoee.
The footage looked great. As a "paid" photographer (I hate to use the word professional describing myself), I really enjoy challenging myself to use the least amount and lightest camera gear as possible and still create quality. I used to carry my Canon 5D Miii, then Sonya FF a7iii, then a6400. Now on my hikes I mostly only take my GoPro and iphone unless I have a specific mission in mind. I love keeping it as simple as I can plus I hate carrying the weight. You really can do so much with so little gear with the technology these days. Great content as usual sir.
Thanks Dave! My thoughts exactly. Just looking into New Options for Creativity! 🤙
I have been out and hiking shorter trips over the last 5 years with my 35 lb gear. I have been looking on your videos for 8-10 month and that made me think hm i might need better gear. So now i got the zpack duplex, arc blast and some more from zpack. You made me go UL and im really thankfull for that. Due to i can enjoy the longer trips. But my wife dosent like you do to the cost :D Btw your videos are amazing.
Can you make a video about your stretching and massage ball routine while on trail?
YESSSSS! I also want
Yes please!
Just such pure and wholesome content.
WOW! You’re a really talented videographer. If it weren’t for the little note at the beginning I would have had no idea about the cheaper/lighter setup.
Thanks so much 😊❤️
@@DarwinOnthetrail M6 mark 2 is a REALLY good budget camera. You sack just a little low light and depth of feel. being APS-C. But still awesome and looks GREAT!
exactly! the artist makes the tools. the tools don't make the artist.
Great to watch you rock it out, Darwin. Inspiring. Planning to do my first set of long hikes at the ripe age of 62 to prep for thru-hikes. I didn't say "ripe old age"! Never too old. Thanks for your inspiration my friend.
More proof that technology for sure enables but does not make up for a life of learning and refining skills. Well done and lovely to see you back at it 😊
You are the most inspirational hiker to me, and above all.. You're real. Thanks man
Good luck on the hike, hope you get good weather, and no more injured feet from the bad insoles. I hope to hike this one someday!
Excellent work...always a pleasure watching these....
Nice to see you again on the trail. Thanks for all your videos and content.
More to come!
I’ve been enjoying your videos for a couple years now. Good work
Headed out on June 4th to start the trail, super stoked! Been 10 years since I started my AppalachianTrail journey from there, returning will bring back some memories for sure.
The BMT has come a long way since I did it as the "proposed route" in 2003. Much better blazing and much better maintained trails.
Much of it bordered in bushwacking then. Before the reroute, the Smokies BMT section required no reservations and no fees.
Great start darwin, great video, thanks for taking the time to make them for us!!
Great choice on the Canon M6 Mll. It has a nice color profile and is my go to camera for 90% of my work, snaps and video. Happy trails.
Just what I needed to watch on the day that my country leaves lockdown after months of planning the hikes for the year to come.
Hope you plan to reveal what the new cheaper camera set up is. The results look pretty good to me.
I went over that swinging bridge in Toccoa before I even knew what thru hiking was, makes me want to go back and do the BMT!
Excellent video, as always!
Nice video brother!! 👍🏼 Really like the music!
Thanks Bud! ❤️
Great shots with the M6. Thanks for sharing your adventure :)
Glad you enjoyed it 🤙
Amazing video Darwin! Every time I watch some of your videos I suddenly feel like I have to go on trip somewhere in the nature.
Enjoy Benton MacKaye Trail and keep doing what you love! HW.
Thank you for all you do. Your inspiration is not without notice. It might sound hokey, but you do more for many people than soooooooooooo many others who try "inspiring" by design.
Enjoyed the edit on this one, as well as the story. Sounds like a cool trail.
Glad you enjoyed it 🤙
Let’s go! Been waiting on this, thanks Darwin. How’s the knee brother?
Muuuuch Better!
i guess it is kinda off topic but does anybody know a good website to stream newly released series online?
@Alfonso Vance lately I have been using Flixzone. Just search on google for it :)
@Kannon Jaxx Yup, I have been using Flixzone for since april myself :D
@Kannon Jaxx thanks, I went there and it seems like a nice service :) Appreciate it!!
Happy to see you back on trail. Love your videos.
Can’t wait for the full review of the Torrid pullover!
I am happy you are doing the BMT. The BMT was my favorite by far. Hopefully this will bring more attention to this awesome trail.
Great video!...I live closeby and have done a lot of adventure racing in that area and it's cool to see all those places on video that I'm so familiar with. Can't wait to see the next edition and the narration to the demise of the knee. Hope the rehab is going well!
Sir your videos kept me on the trail. Thank you
Am torn between doing the first 400-500 miles of the AT NOBO, or the BMT NOBO, starting in early April.
Hey Darwin I've been a huge fan for the last few years! I live near the trailhead for the PNT and was wondering if you'll ever make it up this way?
the Uberlite wasn't too cold?
Filming hikes has got to be tedious. Thank you for the efforts you put in to do it!
Glad to see you out on the trail again. Good luck on the 12 day goal, your forecast looks pretty good for the most part!
awesome video Darwin. the views of the Appalachian mountains are beautiful.
It really is!
I haven't used a Canon in a decade but it looks like a winner to me. Seemed like your DOF was pretty good and your focus was spot on. Looked like it may not have IBIS and you did a good job getting away with it. I hope to see the rest of this hike, definitely one I'd love to knock out.
I watch Darwin as much for the stories told as for the scenic views. So, for me, the video quality is just fine.
I think it came out pretty good for what I had to work with. Testing New Options for Creativity! ❤️
Great looking trail. Hope you are feeling well after and things are healing up. Enjoy your trip.
Super Challenging, regardless of the injury. 🤙
Working and watching the video. It helps me get in the zone. I live in Calgary, Canada and the spring season just started here. Hope to do some good hikes this spring/summer!
Is there a trail from the end of Pinhote to Springer Mountain?
Hey Darwin looking forward to following along with you. Take Care
which camera did you go with? EDIT: haha i'm dumb. I'm a big ol' fan of the Canon M6. Its what I filmed my very first UA-cam video with...and promptly tripped breaking my first lens as well. The canon EOS 80d is a great camera as well but heavy. filmed my next 65 videos withthat, and now I've got the SOny A7s3. Its quite a leap from the canon 80d. Love your stuff! I'll be watching every episode! Getting ready to hike the Uinta Highline trail.
I've NEVER done 20+ miles on a first day. I usually do 12-17 for the first few days after more than a few weeks rest. Your knee bust be feeling a LOT better.
Hey man! I switched from a traditional shoe to an altar trail runner and I’ll never go back... thanks for the guidance Darwin! I hope to see you on the trail one day
Right behind you start the BMT on April 5th, how is the resupply situation? Looking for your updates prior to departure.
So sweet of you to wait for them... I hope Dumplin's OK.
I love the BMT!!!!! I am working on section hiking it!
Sounds fun. May half to put it on my bucket list after the A.T
I know you probably had the answer to my question in a gear list video but is that a MSR pocket rocket 2 stove you have? I am considering buying one. Thanks in advance!
Looks an amazing place. Maybe try the new Gopro or the older Hero 8 Black for filming. I find it fantastic for filming whilst hiking. Footage a lot better than expected. Lightweight, waterproof, get a cage so you can fit a variable ND filter, lightweight tripod and all good. Get audio adapter and a rode video micro for audio. Atb
what time of year where you liking here? I'm planning to come down in a week! :)
Didn’t notice any quality difference with the different camera.
Excellent!
The BMT is so beautiful. Another great vid my dude!
This is awesome! Thanks for sharing dude. Truly appreciate you. Always an inspiration! Hope you are feeling better, and you aint kiddin, 25+ miles right out of the gate is huge! I'm lucky enough to hit 15 😅 and I know you have done 35-40+ on the PCT. Crazy!
I hiked the Blood Mountain loop trail on Wednesday. I must have just missed you.
Would love to know more about the smaller, lighter budget camera...not too shabby except for low light (night) conditions, not sure what you used for lighting.
Beautiful nature, trail and video! Greetings from Slovakia (Europe)
If you're up to a real challenge and epic hikes/climbs in wilderness, you should come up to the BC/ Alberta area. Mind blowing. Guaranteed.
Looks beautiful over there Darwin. Can’t wait to get back to the US & do some walking. Take care
There so small great trail like BMT. I never follow anybody in this trail.
Great start 23 miles. 👍👍
Hey Darwin, I was wondering what was your resupply strategy for this trail? I am planning to thru-hike it in May! Thanks
Perfect video to hype up my next 9 months!!! thx DWOTT
Good to c u back at Darwin. Impressed w the 23 on day 1. What is ur training like leading up to the hike?
Hey Darwin, long time watcher first time commenter. With all the back and forth across the US, have you heard of Eagle Rock Loop in Arkansas? It's a small 25 mile loop in the Ouachita Nat'l Forest. It's a great, tough trail with beautiful sights.
It's a trip to see you exactly where i have been standing.
Sorry to hear about your knee injury I look forward to seeing you complete this trail. Pretty badass goal you set for yourself to complete it in 12 days.
I was just there. Early March.
I'm currently NOBO from Auburn on the Pinhoti by Dalton and should hit its Northern terminus at the BMT in a few days; I'm just realizing I can head South on the BMT for 70+ miles to catch the AT a few miles North of Springer, or I can head North on the BMT and catch the AT around mile 170+, if I understand it correctly. Any corrections/thoughts/suggestions?
(The overall aim is Katahdin.)
I appreciate any feedback!
Hey Darwin, have you ever made a video just telling stories of weird/unusual encounters with animals or just crazy weather events? As you've spent so much time on various trails, I'd be curious to watch that video.
I’ve been waiting too!!
Thanks Darwin!!
I think the footage is fine. What camera did you use?
Cold nights are the tuff ones!👍👍👍
Hey! Just wanted to say I rented your Arizona Trail doc a few weekends ago and I really enjoyed it! Great job!
Awesome! Thank you for the Support!
Cold weather coming!
No trekking poles? Ouch!
Great video! Glad to hear the knees are doing better. The M6 is no slouch of a camera. The footage looks great. Little bit lighter than that R5 huh?
Fo Sho! Now, if I could just figure out a way to carry the C70 on a hike. 🤔
@@DarwinOnthetrail sure. And put a 70-200mm 2.8L on it. 😂
What kind of stretches do you do to finish out your day?
I'm surprised at the high mileage on the first day. Will be catching up on the other videos. Stay safe.
Question: do you hang your stove/gas/cook pot in your bear bag? Or do you leave it in your tent overnight? Seeing that shot of you lighting it made me wonder. It would be great to just roll over in the morning and fire up the stove to make coffee, LOL!
Fantastically shot video and the quality is excellent despite using more budget gear!
Are you shooting flat and then grading later or just straight outta camera? Looks great either way!
4 miles a day out of the gate!? I'd say a lightweight camera makes sense. I'm no pro, but it looks great to me. Still enjoying the Altaplex?
What podcast do u listen to?
Good music and great dialogue
Really nice content as usual , just starting to wonder if you ever will finish a long hike wo injuries
Loved it look forward to the next
Looking forward to more videos. Keep up the good work!
Keep evolving, one step at a time
A question/concern: my buddy and I (both strong 70 year olds) are hiking the BMT in mid April, is the trail well marked? If not, we need a plan “B” to guide us.
Also, been enjoying the videos, suggestions, and commentary for quite a while.
Best to you.
Paul
I watch people hike and they do 4 to 6 miles and they are just beat. I have done 24 in one day on the Ice Age Trail in WI. in the kettle section it was rough because it was one of the first hikes I did so when someone does 4 miles I am like WHAT??? I so that in an hour and a half lol. You are fast!!!!
So excited
Darwin, how is the Altaplex holding up?
The camera seems to have done its job. I guess that the BMT is no joke! You started yourself on a tough schedule, but you're a few decades younger than I am. I'm down to 15 mile days when I'm feeling good! Take care. 👍
