When 45 fired SecDef Esper, replacing him with a loyalist, Gen. Milley gave a speech which included the lines "we do not take an oath to an individual, we take an oath to the Constitution." Acting SecDef Miller on Jan 4 issued orders to the DC Natl. Guard they were "not to interact with protesters" and remain under his direct command on Jan 6. That resulted in some 340 NG prevented from instantly responding alongside DC Metro PD to the Capitol and the 3 hour delay for their deployment.

My God what is happening to this country? I'm the son of one of the greatest generation, my father stood on the deck of the battleship Missouri and witnessed the surrender of Japan. If he were alive today he would be truly heart broken. We all need to return honor and dignity back to this once great country. And it takes more than a hat and a slogan.

I am a historian and I can tell you this: great economic changes more often than not creates economic imbalances that impoverish many people, and breeds anger, confusion and resentment among them. It happened prior to the Bolshevik revolution, prior to Hitler's rise to power, and elsewhere. in the USA the mass outsourcing of industrial jobs and the rise of the service economy left many people behind just like in post Soviet Russia. What's makes the American case so worrying Is the mass availability of firearms, many of them of the military type.

As a history major, I can say that our nation is now the most divided it has been since the Civil War. We won't have another "Civil War" in the traditional sense of troops fighting each other. However, we are going to see a continued decline of democracy in our nation over the next generation. Our country is past the brink of healing. The problem I am seeing is. Awful people think that they can say and do whatever they want. So long as they hold public office. They're sadly not being proven wrong. We hold congressman, senators, presidents, judges,etc. With far too much reverences. Making them nearly untouchable when they've said something awful or committed a crime. That needs to stop, everyone should be held to account in this country. No matter your position in life.
I see this kind of conduct as part of a much wider trend. Perhaps, its roots lie in poor parenting or other kinds of social upheaval. It seems that, after my generation, people thought they had license to say and do whatever they pleased, irrespective of how they hurt others. Previously, there were social boundaries and codes of decency that most people did not cross. Selfishness and greed were considered to be antisocial notions. Courtesy was a given. All of that changed in or around the late 70's.
I look back and see the rash of divorces that spread everywhere in the 1970's. Families were split apart, and I think that many people didn't know where they belonged any more. Community colleges formulated courses for women who had been homemakers and were now divorced, trying to find their way. What happened to the children of those many broken families? What happened to them socially, financially, and psychologically? I recall seeing - and feeling - a lot of anger and fear, myself, during that turbulent era. Children pick up on things quickly. Some become just as fearful, angry, and frustrated as the spouse who was left. If the custodial spouse was left in a far poorer financial position after the divorce, there was no money for therapy to guide her and her children through such a time. There wasn't even enough money to properly support the family left behind. Many children I knew, including my own, acted out in destructive ways. I think that those children - now grown adults - are still acting out, including in the halls of Congress. Maladjusted adults raise maladjusted children, so the cycle continues throughout time.
Of course, this does not account for all of the bad behavior in our country, but I do believe that it accounts for a lot of it. I am in the late twilight of my life, and I have the benefit of hindsight concerning these things. I think that unaddressed issues in childhood eventually cause maladjusted adults, some of whom carry a lot of hostility and self-centeredness, even narcissism. We can most certainly see that in Trump and others in his orbit. Maybe, society is now paying the price for those unaddressed childhood and family issues and our failure to properly care for broken families, whether intact or not.

I spent twenty two years in the Army and I have only had two commanders that I had absolute respect for. Even though I am retired now I can add Gen Milley to that list. I may not hold to all of his political views, but he is faithful to his oath to protect this country from all enemies, foreign or domestic. I would love to see him run for the Oval office sit. He would get my vote.

I was so proud to be an American citizen while listening to General Milley speaking to congress explaining why the armed services aren't woke, listing the books he's read and why it's important to be informed about diverse beliefs. I'm a Norwegian. My grandfather, working as a railroad maintenance man during the time of the German occupation, was by pure luck spared a very certain death when the Norwegian resistance, in a last minute change of plans, decided NOT to blow up the railroad where a German regiment were to travel. Same Germans who forced my grandfather to go before their train on this little contraption that he used (I do not remember what it is called), just so he would be the one blown into the air, were there to be any railroad "sabotage."
This was before my mother was conceived (and her younger siblings).
Sometimes when looking back on this episode in my family's history, I am very aware of how the existence of myself, my brother, our cousins, and innumerable more human beings, boils down to pure luck.
And yes of course this somewhat personal experience/history, combined with reading loads of History, has me also very aware of what fascism looks and acts like.
Added to that, I'm at the moment living in a South American Banana Republic, which nefarious, stupid, inept, and ruthless regime is sadly, tragically, becoming increasingly authoritarian.
And this I'll say: Should trump get into the White House again, Banana Republics will become peanuts compared to his Covfefe Republic.
