Hello Scotty!! I recently bought a 95 f150, I'm new to the driving game, and I've never worked on something that old, I've been driving it for a while now, and its time to change the oil, what kind of oil should I put in it? I've heard that on old vehicles you should run a heavier weight oil, is that true? If so what should I use? Thanks for the help! Cheers!

I got very lucky with my 2014 GT. It was actually a Roush stage 3 I bought new July 2015, cheap! I took it up to a Mustang shop and had a smaller pulley, intake, etc... installed. Supposedly made 638hp/522tq after tuning. I traded it August 2018 with 23,000 miles on it, still had the stock MT-82 and clutch with no issues! The next person who bought it put 17” wheels out back with street drag radials. He ran it hard and still had no issues with the transmission! The rear end started making noise so he traded it for a Corvette after 15 months of ownership!

I picked up a dead MT-82 for a swap project for extremely cheap because it was grinding into second and lost 3rd. When I did the rebuild the gearset itself was in great shape but wow the shift guides are terrible little plastic bits, they were totally eaten up on the 3-4 dog. The shift forks seemed not terrible, which is what a lot of people seem to be blaming for the issues. I'm on aftermarket bronze shift guides now but haven't gotten the project driving yet to see how they do.

Hey Scotty I have one of those stangs had the transmission rebuilt once, it’s a good strong unit but the problem is the shifter. It has a remote shifter, the front of the shifter is connected to the rear of the transmission and back of the shifter is connected to the body of the car, so when you are shifting gears at higher rpms the shifter is put in a bind because it doesn’t rollover along with the engine and transmission causing a gear lockout and it eventually eats up gears and synchronizes. I put a after market shifter bracket that took the shifter off the body, and a couple more things that hurts the shifting is the plastic hydraulic line on the clutch and the fact the the clutch shares the fluid with the brake system. I took care of all of that. I think That’s what Ford needs to do.

Part of the problem is that the shifter is mounted to the body and under hard torque shifting becomes difficult. There is a aftermarket mount that goes on the transmission and the shifter attaches to it. It just make shifts more reliable under hard acceleration with less chance of missed shifts. I think this might help with reliability.

Borg Warner without a doubt make the best automatic transmissions and differentials. They were really popular in Australian cars. My dad bought a ford ex taxi with 500,000 kms and then drove it until it had 1,100,000 kms and then SOLD IT RUNNING for $600 original transmission. Also my uncle used to do burnouts in a car with Borg Warner differential, never changed the diff oil, I got it as my first car and drove it till it had 350,000 kms until i bought a newer car, diff didn't even make any noise.

The MT82 is great, it’s only the 18s with the lightened shift forks that break. It’s a well engineered trans that shifts like butter. Getrag engineered them but they were made in China with cheap Chinese metal. Hit up Ben Calimer for 11-17 trans upgrades to replace the gear sets with American steel and you’re fine. You should be fine, the 6 speeds are good if you take care of them. The 10 speeds have issues. To many gears too close to each other. They even have a special fluid (ULV) that has a skull and bones mark on it. Only trans fluid I have seen that on it. Its because the gears are so close to each other a special thin fluid was made for the trans. If I have that 10 speed I would service the trans every 30-50k.
