Every sound you're hearing is Todd. Every voice, every note, every instrument, all Todd.
For me, he's the single greatest musician ever!
I give that title to Jeff Lynne, but yes, Todd is similarly multi-talented.
It is amazing the work Todd largely did single handed on Something/Anything. One of my all time favorite recordings.
Brings me back to being a teenager .Love Ted Rundgren
I love when you young people appreciate the music of my childhood ❤️
The guitar for George Harrison and the way the quick pauses between lyrics is Carole.
I never thought about it..but now that you said it..I could see where the music sounds like George, and the singing like Carol. ❤
One of my favorites of all time not To forget that he wrote, produced and performed all instruments and vocals a very rare talent.
This song really captures the 70s vibe. I have loved it since I first heard it.
Always LOVED Todd - so many great songs. This is one of my favorites.
Classic song by one of the most underappreciated artists of our time
I never realist that this master peace sounds like George Harrison, although I grew up with this song.I always loved this song.Todd Rundgren is a talent.
This song was and still is THE PERFECT POP SONG of ALL TIME
I agree! Really a great song. I think it’s his best.
Todd was a guest at "Live from Daryl's House" and they sang this song at Todd's house in Hawaii. The music
was great and so was the water in the background.
This may be the most perfect pop song ever.
An old favorite!
Great song. Great songwriter and producer. Todd has produced for many great artists.
Many excellent songs, my favorite is “A Dream Goes On Forever”. For many years I assumed this was Carole King.
I absolutely get the George Harrison/ Carol King reference
Great observation with both CK & GH. I think I would best describe it as written in CK style with George flourishes throughout, especially with the slide guitar.
Todd was always ahead of the curve. His music didn't follow trends - he made them. Besides being a multi-instrumentalist and amazing vocalist, he was an innovative producer and an early adopter of computer generated imagery in rock videos using the early Amiga models to add CGI to his videos.
Yess it does sound like Carol King in background !! 😂
Saw Todd Rundgren in Ringo’s All Starr Band. Incredible experience ❤❤ October 2015 🇨🇦
I’ve said it before. Harri, you’re a true gem. “George Harrison and Carole King “ . Spot on, sir! Never heard it quite that way, and now can’t hear it any other way. Carri on…
The genius Todd Rungren
Fun Fact……Todd does all the guitar work on Meatloaf’s Bat Out Of Hell debut album….saw him live on both of our birthdays…..
Right on! The vocals and piano sound like Carole. The background vocals and the guitar sounds like George. 😊
Another Gem & more diamonds is Todd’s Beautiful, Melodic, Hello it’s Me a CLASSIC!
I was 11. Definitely one of those songs that take me to a different time.
Bravo! Thank you!
I totally get both the George Harrison and Carole King references. It's comparisons I never dreamed of myself, but they are there. It's why I follow people like you, because of your point of view. That said Todd Rundgren produced albums for numerous high profile artists all while creating music for himself too. He literally may be THE MOST UNDERRATED artist/producer ever.
Wow!
Todd Rundgren = George Harrison + Carol King
I get it! Wonderful!
One of the best feelgood songs ever
You need to do a deep dive on Todd, Hari! Todd played all the instruments and all the
harmonies on this album.
The album this is from, " Something/Anything", is one of the greatest pop albums of the 70s. Todd is not a brilliant multi-instrumentalist but a wonderful songwriter as well. Check the album out. There are so many gems on it.
I do believe he played most if not all the instruments, not knowing I wouldn't have guessed this from 1972, way ahead of it's time.
Always happy memories with this song! It came out when I was in Jr High and it always takes me back there! A classic for sure! Thanks Harry…(& Cosmo)!!!
You bet, Sue, I was happy to sponsor it. :)
Great pick, Cosmo. Todd's a wizard, a true star! They finally inducted him into the R&R HOF last year, much too belatedly. One of the most talented musicians of our era. From his double album, "Something/Anything." "Hello, It's Me," his second version of that masterpiece, also appears on this superb record. Thanks Harri.
Release date was 1972 , sooo many good songs were on top 100 billboard of 1972 I saw the Light came in at #88 that year. But it was played alot on radio believe me!! Great song 🎵 🎉🎉
That was an outstanding record but he has so many. Hermit of Mink Hollow is one of my favorites but I also love all the Utopia stuff.
@@stpnwlf9 Yes! So much of his solo work remains unheard by the masses, which is a shame. Another great one is Healing. I wore that vinyl out & bought the CD about 4 times because I kept giving my copy away to people I knew would enjoy it.
Much obliged, John. I knew the Guvnor would love this tune!
But he didn't do a lot of music ..
Check out Todd singing this song with Daryl Hall on Daryls House - 50 years older and he still sounds great. Thanks for this reaction Harry and God Bless
Also check out any other song the two of them covered on TRs appearances on LFDH.
Todd Rundgren gives me the impression that he could write, playon, sing and produce a hit record just about any time he wanted to.
Todd's voice was so damn sweet back then. I was 14 back then. I bought this album many times over & wore that vinyl right out! During his solo endeavors and his days with Utopia, I saw him somewhere between 60 & 70 times. Always a great & entertaining show. Do yourself a favor and listen to "Healing". That album is my all time favorite of his.♥🎵🎼🎶🎸
*Little side note, back in '75, my art class was the only one I had to pass to graduate. I only did one project. I drew out the AWATS (aka Wizard) album cover 3'x3'. It took forever. I mounted it on wood and it is sitting in my dining room as I type this!
How many people hear it on the TV advert in UK and don't realise it's 50 years old... Brilliant track, one of my favourites of all time. I used to play the 7" all the time with my headphones in and dance around the living room late at night... Great memories. Carol King, another fabulous songwriter and singer, along with her bestie Neil Sedaka (who wrote Oh Carol for her) - to think they started writing songs at the age of 14...
I can definitely see the comparisons with George Harrison and Carole King. The background vocals do sound like King, although Todd played all the instruments, all vocals, production and engineering. And as for Harrison, he asked Todd to take over producing Badfinger's Straight Up album when he was called away mid-production. Great song from one of my favorites. Would love to see more Rundgren reactions!
Glad somebody brought up the Badfinger connection! Any song from that album is worth a listen. One of my favorite albums of all time.
Nice to know I'm not he only one left who loves this music and, thanks to the comments above, the history too.
@@bethcrumpton476 Yeah, love Straight Up and No Dice as well!
I spent my entire childhood thinking Carole King sang this.
That's so cool! It never occurred to me, but now I can't get Carole King out of my head when I hear this!@@Mister_Samsonite
1972 I bought the single. I have this song near my heart❤️ It’s great😃
Thanks for the reaction Harri. Always loved this song. I hear it on the overhead at work all the time. Never get tired if it.
I remember hearing this overhead at work in high school in the 80s. I thought it was Carly Simon! 😂 All these years later, I’m a huge Todd fan, so I can’t believe how stupid I was! 😂
Great choice Cosmo. I always loved this and his other popular songs. I never figured out why he was not more popular. Love that guitar that sounds so much like George Harrison. I just learned that Todd played every instrument in this song. Amazing! Harri loves it too 🌺✌️
Thanks, Debbie, I was happy to sponsor this song of Todd's, it's irresistible.
Great Artist. But he's probably one of the best Producers ever!
Good catch on the similarity to Carole King! I never noticed that before, but you are right!!! A couple other great songs from Todd are "Hello It's Me" and "Can We Still Be Friends". I loved all of them when I heard them as a youth and still love them just as much!!
Harri, you should do an episode of your favorite songs in the last year.
Could be a lot of fun.
yes, Great idea ❣️
Thank goodness you did the "studio" track instead of the bad live version. Great tune, fantastic album, Todd is one of a kind (thank goodness). Thank you Cosmo , we should try his "Can We Still Be Friends".
You're more than welcome, gary.
One of my favourites songs EVER!!! Thank you Cosmo and Harri.
Cynthia, are you a Brit? I don't know why, but I always thought you were American. The way you spelled, "favourites", though has me wondering.
@@Cosmo-Kramer Canadian born and bred. Toronto to be exact. You’re an American though, right
@@Cynthia... Gotcha! Do you know Mary???
@@Cosmo-Kramer I know Mary just from here and I don’t think she lives too far away from me. I think she’s kind of west of me if I remember correctly maybe when I go home, I could meet up with her.
@@Cynthia... Yes, I am. Oh, so you don't currently live in Toronto?
I’ve heard this song for 51 years and you absolutely nailed that connection I’ve never thought of. It absolutely feels like a collaboration between Harrison and King. I’d maybe throw in Carly Simon and James Taylor too just to complete the sonic circle.
Even more beautiful, Todd played everything on this song. And most of the album "Something/Anything".
Wish more people would do Todd Rungren. 😊
WOW- your analogy about hearing notes of King and Harrison are SPOT ON!!! I’ve been listening to and loving this song most of my life and never realized this. You’ve got an ear!!!
Hadn't heard THAT, in a good many years! Thanks, Harri! (AND Cosmo!!!)
Sure thing, Able-Man, glad to bring it back 'round to you.
I can hear Carol King. Have a great weekend, Harri!
Great❣️ Ty Ty
Kings voice & Harrison's 🎸
One of my favorites
Thank you Harri, enjoy the studio versions.
I also thought of Carol King. Carol's voice and George's instruments.
ditto
I was 9 years old when this song came out in 1972 and I first thought it was Carole King too! It was real popular for sure, love it!
I'm a 66 baby, So I'm right their with ya! We had the best music to grow up to!
I was also 9 years old in 1972 also, loved this song too! Happy 60th birthday, Sam! 🎂
Todd produced some of Grand Funk Railroad music ❤❤❤❤
Love love this song!
Unlike many songs of the "classic rock" era (which have been overplayed), I've never grown tired of hearing this one. Still love it.
You know the nostalgic feels you get when you hear certain songs. Yeah, this is one. Sophomore in high school and the sky was the limit. ❤
Harri, Awesome comparison! Harrison and King!!!
OH MAN - this brings me right back to 1972... listening to this song on my radio/headphones I had got for Christmas (from radio shack or something), probably eating a space food stick.
Todd Rundgren is often overlooked. There's not a bad cut on this particular album Something, Anything.
Great song and album, Todd was dope back in the day. Try Black Mariah from the same album, shows Todd in heavy rock mode, his guitar is so underrated, special talent. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶
Carol King is actually the most obvious similarity, because the lyrics, the chord progressions and the vocal phrasing are all hers.
It's the guitar work, harmonies and vocal tone that makes him sound like Harrison.
Rundgren has a lot of good songs. Hello, It's Me, Bang the Drum All Day, We Gotta Get you a Woman, Can We Still Be Friends...etc.
I love this song! Great choice! And yes this has always reminded me of George Harrison (the guitar) as well. I get the Carol King connection as well but never noticed it until you pointed it out!
Wow, Harri, you are dead on with the flavor of George and Carol in Todd! I knew there was something about Todd's music but couldn't figure out what I was hearing. Thanks!
"Harri-King" yep, I can hear it!👍🏻
Yes. It a George type riff. And it’s a Carole King tempo and melody, type. It’s beautiful.
Hey Cosmo. How big of a fan am I of Todd Rundgren? 34 albums in my collection. Nice pick Cosmo. 👍👍👍
Thirty-four, that's gotta be some sort of record! (rim-shot)
I agree with you. It definitely sounds like a Carol King song. I can hear her voice in this song. Good point. Love this , it makes me smile. . You should watch Daryl Hall with Todd on UA-cam. Daryl’s band does a great job on this song. and Thanks for sharing .
Man, This absolutely is George Harisson and Carol King as one person! You nailed it right there.
Cosmo - I have followed Todd Rundgren since the Nazz album was released. This song "I Saw The Light" was justifiably a huge hit that endures to this day. Todd is a great songwriter, vocalist, and producer and the list goes on. Great song to share and Harri, your review was quite enjoyable. 👏👏
Thanks, Dave.
The George Harrison comparison possibly comes from Todd’s slide guitar on the track. The Carole King reference, for me, comes from the similar chord progression to many of her pop masterpieces.
Ah, ya beat me to it ...
From Todd's 1972 album, "Something /Anything, this is a spectacular song made up entirely of verses and the bridge and barely a chorus. It was written in 15 minutes by Todd, who did the vocals, all the instruments and also produced it. He copied the Motown style of placing the best song first on the album ... it works. Made it to Number 16 in the US, Number 15 in Canada, and Number 36 in the UK. Wonderful melody, instrumentation and vocals made this a great song. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Cosmo 👏👏 Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
Great album sll around. Saw him 3 times! Peoplextalk about Prince. He was "Princey" first. The laid back Prince.
It's a beauty, eh, Mary?
@@Cosmo-Kramer Love, love, love this song. A real ear worm. Thanks for the memory Cosmo. 👍✌️🎶🇨🇦🇺🇲🎶
Love Todd Rundgren
Local Philly Kid Wonderful Vocals Wonderful Melodies Wonderful Guitar
If you remember the Song All The Young Dudes by Mott the Hoople Mott singer is Ian Hunter who just recently released an Album at 84 years old 😮 and Todd plays a Wonderful Guitar Part and Sings backing vocals on the the Song “Don’t Tread on Me” on the Ian Hunter album Defiance Part
Wonderful Reaction as Always Harri
Grew up in Clifton Heights outside of Philly. Went to Upper Darby high school. Was in a group call the Nazz in 68. The song was good in its time.
Finally! A reaction guy who actually knows music. Nice.
Now check out the song that followed on the album, It Wouldn't Have Made Any Difference. So many sides to this incredible artist. Please use the album version to get the full effect of the production.
A fantastic song. I was only 12 when it came out. He has a lot of good songs.
Here is a song I listened to all the time traveling between Wilson NC and my uni in the hills of western NC. As i came up the hill in the morning heading back to Cullowhee, I saw the light shining from behind the mountain. Ah, the INCREDIBLE power of music to evoke memories!!!
I love Todd Rundgren. I think I was in middle school when this was on the radio. His production is always so good.
Love him! My favorite is Hello it’s Me!
He is so underrated!! I love his writing and his singing...pure talent!!
Great song. Try Todd's "We got to get you a Woman"
I got such a kick out of hearing that you thought this song sounded a lot like Carole King singing it. That is who I thought sang this song for the longest time until a Navy buddy told me it was Todd Rundgren.
Harri, I knew this one would score *very* high with you, hence my Intro. The 1972 song reached #16 in the US, and #36 in the UK. It's been used several times in movies, including a terrific one called, *American Hustle,* starring Bradley Cooper, Christian Bale, Robert DeNiro, Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Adams. It's based on a true crime that took place in Philadelphia (coincidentally, Todd's hometown) in the '70s, and this song appears on the film's awesome '70s era soundtrack (as do 3 ELO songs!). I can definitely hear Harrison in the track. King I never thought of, but now that you mention it, yeah, her, too.
Todd is actually from Upper Darby PA.
@@user-ie6dz4ib3b Actually, he was born in Philadelphia, and Upper Darby Township, where he was raised, borders the city. When he graduated high school, Todd moved a few miles back over the border into the city proper. He's a Philly boy. When Tina Fey,. who was born and raised in Upper Darby, is asked where she is from, she says, Philadelphia. That's because no one outside the Delaware Valley has ever heard of Upper Darby. Just like almost no one reading my comment above would know where the hell in the large commonwealth of Pennsylvania the Township of Upper Darby is located. So it's far more informative to say Todd's from Philly, given he grew up in the Greater Philadelphia Area, and was actually born in the city proper.
@@user-ie6dz4ib3b Yup. His mom, Ruth, used to host get-togethers every year with Todd's fans. I went one year & on the last day, she took us all back to her home. I was seriously pinching myself being in his parent's home. Both Ruth & Harry have since passed on. I'm glad to have the photos with them.
@@bungalowmo Wow, what a cool experience!
Great great choice Cosmo Kramer. 1972, what a great year. BTW, Cosmooo.....really?? I feel like George Costanza reacting to you, LOL
I purchased the album back in 1972. I liked his music, and yes Carol King, and yes it does give a nod to George Harrison. There were some of my friends that disagreed with me about his album, but when it came to music, I liked what I liked and no one could change my mind. His wasn't the only album I was ridiculed over. :-) Their loss.
Such a beautiful song. I loved it already from the first moment, hearing it. ❤️❤️🎶🎶🎶👍
Loved this song since the first time I heard it as a kid. Has such a warm positivity.
I was a lunior in high school when the song debuted in March 1972. It received a lot of airplays from our local rock station, WFLI. Harri, I was like you-loved it the first time I heard it. Upon checking, I was a bit surprised the song did not chart higher than it did. But my sweet lord. What a beautiful composition from a brilliantly talented artist.
I saw him with Ringo and they were great. Ringo is my favorite drummer because of his perfect timing. Todd is a very good singer and i love that song..❤❤❤
I call this part of the "songs of my life." I adore it, great car travelin' song.
Giddy-up!!!🤣🤣🤣
Always in my top three of 1970s hits. Although Todd intended this (partially at least) as a pastiche of Carole King's style it is - for me anyway - the best thing he ever did. "Hello it's me" is also a great song from the same album, but not quite in the same league as "I Saw the Light".
