      @@DefensiveLimestone Yeah the entire point of the comment from Ubisoft was that if subscription services are to take off in gaming, than most people need to get comfortable with not owning their games. A compromise people have already decided in the movie industry and others, but not the gaming industry. That's why gaming subscription services haven't really taken off. Even Game Pass isn't doing the numbers Microsoft wants, and that's literally the biggest gaming subscription service. Shit, most people that DO have it mostly have it due to it being coupled with other benefits. Like the ability to play online, for instance, considering most gamers play a handful of games or less.

    Ubisoft has been doing this type of shenanigans for a while now with their new games. For example you should check out their last Watch Dogs Game and Far Cry 6 game for pricing in multiple versions.
    Them there's the fact them and other developers offer most times an art book / soundtrack as a deluxe edition bonus now with not much else. While most games use to have these as preorder perks even worse these artbooms and soundtracks usually loop back to signing up for a developer's or publisher's exclusive store/site to use the codes or download the digital artbooks/soundtracks.

      Not that people care about discs anymore, but does anyone remember the alternative version of DLC, Disc Locked Content. I.e. content that is already on a disc (or today, in the game files), but can't be accessed without paying more.
      People really should start using this term again, even in the days of downloads. Its spiteful nature should please those of us who abhor dlc as a concept. (bring back the days of actual expansions ffs.)

    • @whyjnot420
      @whyjnot420 Місяць тому

      @@llukas0906 I think your argument would be correct if you were talking explicitly about full expansions. However the stuff called "DLC" was originally about small things that often looked as if they had been cut from the game so they could be sold later. This was a hallmark of early dlc. They were little things that at the very least appeared to have been cut and then parted out like a stolen car, regardless if they were or were not. They were low effort crap churned out to make more money. Their small nature was why the term 'microtransaction' could legitimately apply to them (somewhat, it should refer to transactions under a dollar or under a couple of bucks, the amount changes depending on who you ask, but is always very small, smaller than you would use a credit/debit card for at a store... think minimum purchase amount).
      Somewhere along the lines people have conflated these little tidbits (think horse armor) with actual proper expansions (to keep with Oblivion, think Shivering Isles) and since it is all downloaded these days, just started calling it all dlc. When you look at the individual words, it is accurate as it is downloaded/downloadable and it is content. However when you look at what the term was used to describe prior to this conflation, it is clear that it refers to a very specific type of content and that it wasn't being applied to larger pieces of content like actual expansions until later on.
      DLC should only be used to refer to the small stuff (if at all tbh). Expansion for the big stuff. If you want an encompassing term, something akin to 'plugin' could be used for the whole spectrum of post-launch content. (hell, using PLC, Post Launch Content would work pretty well)

And for a smaller increase you could get the "big" version with so much more content. The middle version will only very rarely be bought and is simply there to make people buy the big version since you get a lot more stuff and the increase doesn't seem as big from the middle one

While every single colleague who reacted to the post criticized this practice, except for those in finance and monetization who defended it as justifiable given the current economic climate. It's baffling, to say the least. I'm seriously considering boycotting the gaming industry altogether. There's a simple solution, just don't buy it. That's all we have to do to stop companies from pulling crap like this.

      Mind blowing games have come 1000X what they were 25 years ago but price hasn't matched that like any other industry would 🫵🤣 the fact gamers have become this entitled is wild

      @@justinmarlowe6999 If you think that, you're obviously a kid who never played those games made 25 years ago. There are games made in the 80s that I would rather play again than the 10th Call of Duty or Assassin's Creed game they crapped out as fast as possible to make easy money.
