Thank you. You did a great job of explaining the block. I seem to have a problem with textures, the solid red felt a bit thicker than the other fabrics. I guess it got the best of me, my block had a bit of a size problem, so after squaring the edges I seem to have a 12" unfinished block. But it will all come out in the wash as they say. As I said, you did an excellent job of explaining the construction, loved the tips and how natural you are. Since I am feeling like a total beginner, after so many years off from projects, I thought I might throw out a tip. I use two different colors of thread when stitching, that way I can always tell which side was stitched on top.
Thanks for the tip Dianna! Sorry to hear your block was a little small. I was thinking about making a video on coping strips. This would help get your block back to 12.5”!
I would start with checking how wide your seams are. Shoot for a scant 1/4”. Since your blocks are ending up smaller, I would bet your seam allowances are a bit too wide!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it! It is actually a group project I did with my small friendship circle. It was the first Moda Blockhead Quilt Along. I just made my own setting for it to put all the blocks together. I had one other comment about it, so maybe I can make a video about it!
please tell us about the orange quilt on your wall. I'm intrigued by 1/2 having triangles & the other 1/2 having strips. Are the blocks the same size? How did you figure out the triangle &/or strip sizes?
It was a group project from my small quilt circle. I was moving away, so we made the Moda Blockhead quilt together to stay in touch. Everyone chose a certain number of blocks (6 I believe) and we made it 8 times, keeping one and swapping the others. Because of this, they weren’t all the same sizes. I added a coping strip to all the blocks to trim them to a consistent size. I decided to set some on point and some regular because of the appliqué blocks. The trick was deciding how large I wanted the blocks to be when I finished. I started by figuring out the on point, square in a square blocks. I use Deb Tucker’s Studio 180 rulers, so it made it easy to figure out the sizes to cut. Then, I just worked backwards on the regular strips. So, say the blocks needed to be 9” finished, I subtracted my 6” finished block size, which left 3”. I divided that by 2, and got that each strip needed to be 1.5”. But don’t forget to add in seam allowances!! Hope that helps! If I get more people asking about it, maybe I could do a video on the process!
@@AvivaHadas you’re welcome! Hope that helps! The Deb Tucker ruler is called square squared. I believe I had to use her large square squared for those.
