    • @quiltedfromtheroots
      @quiltedfromtheroots Місяць тому

      This actually doesn’t make it stiff at all. It helps seams lay flat and get rid of deep creases. I have a fabric prep spray that I use to make my fabric stiff before I cut my fabric. I was thinking of FINALLY making a new video and showing that recipe as well as my fabric prep steps and how I cut my fabric. Would you be interested in a video/videos like that?? Happy quilting!

    Really enjoy your video. I’ve been really thinking about giving this a try and just might since I’ve watched this. One question tho….when finishing piece 5, it really sounds like you used steam while pressing it. Is that what I like to call, an OOOPS!, or just a touch of background noise?

    • @quiltedfromtheroots
      @quiltedfromtheroots Місяць тому

      So glad you found it helpful! I went back to watch, the iron I am using isn’t a steam iron, so it must have been some background noise. Sorry for the confusion! Steam will shrink the paper so you definitely don’t want to use any steam!

      I made it! I got some ironing board cover material and added a couple layers of insulbrite and added a backing and then put some binding on it. It worked really well for a while. I could roll it up out of the way, but then it started getting brittle. I made one out of plywood that I use now. There are you tube videos out there on how to make one. I need to make a bunch for our guild’s quilt show, so maybe I can record it to show you how to make one!

    • @quiltedfromtheroots
      @quiltedfromtheroots 2 місяці тому

      So glad it was helpful! Needles and thread…this varies depending on who you ask. I like to use a 50 wt thread or 60 wt if I am working with really small pieces. I like to use a size 70 needle but sometimes I forget and use an 80. I think it is more important to use appropriate needle size to match your thread weight. Aka Smaller pieces, thinner thread, smaller needle. Hope this helps!!

    I starch my fabric by dunking yardage. Now that sta-flo is gone, do you think this would work for dunking instead of spraying?

    • @quiltedfromtheroots
      @quiltedfromtheroots 3 місяці тому

      Thanks for the question. I have heard of dunking fabric and letting it dry. I just don’t have the space to let it dry so I have never tried it. This is better as a wrinkle release spray and getting seams/blocks to lay super flat. I have something else that I use to prep my fabric. I think it would work better for that situation. I’m hoping to make a video on this soon so keep an eye out!

    When you ironed the first part of your fabric you ironed a bow into the cut ends instead of straight. I wonder if that happened in your salvage sides to cause the bow you talked about when folding the first piece. Thanks for this video, much appreciated even 5 years later...

    I tried it and it's fine for taking out the wrinkles but not as a starch. My fabric is only supported by the industry's chemical sizing and nothing if I prewash it and iron it with the vodka ironing spray. If I want to starch my fabric, I use equal parts liquid starch, distilled water, and rubbing alcohol.

    • @quiltedfromtheroots
      @quiltedfromtheroots 3 місяці тому

      This is true. I haven’t made a video in a while but when my life slows down a bit, this is actually a video I wanted to make. I use this for more like a wrinkle release and “Flatter” spray to really get my seams/blocks to lay flat. I actually use something else for fabric prep. I mix equal parts Mary Ellen’s Best Press, water, and Terial Magic. Maybe I can try your solution in the video for comparison! Thanks for the tip!

      I don’t currently have a video for that one. It is part of a Jacqueline de Jonge pattern. I have had a lot going on personally and kind of put UA-cam on hold, but I just reached 800 subscribers and I promised I would make a video if I reached 800. I have another row to do like the one in the photo and I can include it in the video, but I won’t be able to give the pattern away. @quiltedfromtheroots 6 місяців тому

      No, it is like Flatter spray or Mary Ellen’s Best Press, but less expensive. I am actually thinking about creating a new video about this spray versus what I use to prep my fabric (which is more like starch). Would it be of interest to you? It makes the fabric stiff like starch does where this spray helps get rid of wrinkles and all the seams nice and crisp!

      Some of my friends don’t drink alcohol but they love this spray. It works BETTER than starch to remove wrinkles and get perfectly flat blocks and seams. It is cheaper than Mary Ellen’s Best Press and Flatter spray, which is more what it is like. It doesn’t make your fabric stiff like starch does.

I am a quilter and this is so different. Thank you

    • @quiltedfromtheroots
      @quiltedfromtheroots 7 місяців тому

      Hi Linda! Yes, you want to make your fabric quite a bit larger than the “shape” you need to cover, because it needs to extend at least 1/4” beyond all the edges of your shape and you want to have wiggle room so you don’t have to worry about being so precise. Most patterns will tell you what size to precut your pieces of fabric. Maybe I could try to make a video about how to know what size to cut your fabric if the pattern doesn’t tell you. Would that be helpful to you? Hopefully that answers your question! If not, feel free to reach back out! Another quick tip, in the settings on UA-cam, you can actually slow the speed down so that the video is slower. Maybe this could help in the parts that are too quick. And don’t forget about pausing! Just don’t give up! Paper piecing is one of those things that always confused me, but once it finally clicked, it actually became my go to for when I don’t want to have to think a lot about what I’m sewing!
