Non-CDL HotShot: I just got my CDL-A! WHY? Is a stepdeck in my future?

  • Sorry for the road noise. This is a straight piped 7.3 with noisy 33's. It is much quieter above 75 MPH, but I was driving 71...
After 3 weeks of CDL school, today I passed my skills test for my CDL-A license. I tested in a manual truck so I will be able to drive anything.
I have no immediate plans at the moment, but will be discussing my options with my insurance agent. Have to find out if the 2+ years of hotshot trucking will count for driving experience.
If not, I will have to find someone to drive for. There are plenty of driving jobs around, but it's not what I really want to do.
    Why get my CDL-A now?
Personally, I believe non-CDL trucking will be regulated out of existence. I have no direct knowledge of any pending changes, but with the FMCSA making it harder to get a CDL, and the many fly-by-night operators out there causing problems for everyone, I think further regulations are inevitable.
And then there's the guys running 14K trucks with 6,500 Lb. 40 Ft. trailers derated to 12K. It won't be long before they get a nasty surprise when they get caught with more than 5,500 Lbs. on their decks!
I'll be ready for whatever comes. And just maybe I'll be able to buy an older semi and a stepdeck. Really looking forward to seeing more of this beautiful country we call home.

Not really...I was going to buy a F550 and a 22 or 25K rated trailer to increase my cargo capacity. I changed the search parameters for regional loads that I haul and the numbers changed my mind. There were 18 non-CDL loads I could have hauled (none were feasible loads for me), 83 loads for a CDL setup (40', 20K) and 8057 semi loads. The non-CDL loads were a tiny drip in the bucket of all the loads that a semi could haul. Even the CDL hotshot loads were only 1% of the semi loads. And it would cost about the same to buy a CDL hotshot rig as an older semi so why bother? I'm on the hunt for a semi which is what I want anyway.

@@2020HotShotTruckingLLC Yes a semi is where it is at. The only thing is that it is hard to get a semi unless you have alot of cash upfront.

Thank you! It was a lot of work and hopefully it will pay off. Looking to move up to a semi in the next year or two.

I almost goofed the air brakes test. Was about to start and realized I hadn't built the air pressure all the way up. Told the instructor what I did, started the truck and built the pressure and continued. Afterwards he told me he knew I would catch it because I had been too thorough up to that point. The instructor I had for the road was Geno - absolutely awesome. Me and the other two students pitched in and bought him a 5-pack of those cigars he smokes.

@@NickB2Blessed There was only 1 female instructor and she was anything BUT a lady! Other instructors were getting passed at her because she wouldn't help the students. John tested me, Geno was my road instructor.

Thank you! Was hoping to buy a semi today, but it didn't work out. I bought a F450 project truck which will need the CDL to haul with.

@@vince5506 I was on the load board while searching for a 450 or 550. There were 17 possible loads available for my non-CDL parameters. I increased the weight to 20K and length to 40 foot, and there were 83 loads available. Changed it to a semi and there were 8057 loads! That Volvo would get nearly the same MPG as the 450 and it's far easier to find a trailer for a semi than the 450. So year, the CDL opens the door for a lot more business!

@@vince5506 Yeah, it kinda sux. Been watching him for years. I'm guessing he paid himself too much and didn't set aside enough for those unexpected expenses. He talks about the gross, but I wonder what the business profit was? Or was he just paying bills, salary and nothing to the business... I'm the opposite. Hadn't really been paying myself, I'm trying to build up the business so when my Mom goes, I will be in a position to go get it.

I'm in the middle Georgia area. I take care of my 87 year old Mom so I have to be home every night. I only haul loads within 300 - 350 mile radius. When I find loads I have to look at the total round trip miles to determine if it would be a profitable load as it is extremely rare for me to find a backhaul.
