Sungazer is my band with bassist Adam Neely. In this video, we look at the recording & production process for the song "Electro". We walk through the process of creating drum parts, learning the song, recording the track, and producing the final version that you hear on the Sungazer Vol. 2 EP.

now a video on how you manage to schedule all your music career, youtube videos, doing gigs and studying japanese at the same time.
Actually though, yes! That'd be just as helpful as this insightful video on the creative process
You JUST have to DO IT! 😃
its an ancient secret
obviusly he is not married.
His Year is secretly a Decade
Adam - Just because you can write music on authoring software doesn't mean it can actually be played
Shawn - Challenge Accepted
that synchrony at 12:58 is really satisfying
Watching trained, professional drummers at work always is a big ego killer--just shows what a massive gulf there is between them and the weekend warrior drumming-for-fun that I do!
It both makes me want to learn more and work harder on things, and makes it daunting to do so since I know how much work I have to do.
40th notes?
40th notes.
I was going to ask why Vol. 2 is only just now coming out if you recorded that song in 2016--
And then I remembered my pile of unfinished projects dating back at least 10 years and got sad.
Alexander Nigro
LOL
i thought i was the only one cursed with that
@@The_Kevinist Ha! As if! :D
Same bruh.
seeing "5 years ago" in this comment, i thought you posted this in 2017 (just one year after the song was recorded) - but then i realized 5 years ago was 2019
Awesome seeing this from the drummers perspective. Always wanted to see how you write for Sungazer, it’s really encouraged me to re-evaluate the way I write parts myself. Can we expect more videos like this?
Yeah, I second that! Or third, really... or 80th going by the thumbs up. Whatever, please just do it :)
100% agree on this comment. More plz
i love the part about playing the song at 50% speed! this is a useful exercise for learning any song on any instrument! my drum teacher explained it to me like this. "its harder to play something at a stupid slow speed, but its easier to train your muscle memory and hold yourself accountable when there's space between the notes. once you've got it speeding it up becomes easy"
when i say all instruments, i really mean it too! i play both drums and bass. its helped so much with both! and also playing in a band situation, it can really clear up alot of riffs and fills if you're unsure about how something goes (not every musician is a pro with a DAW unfortunately. i myself am just starting to learn)
please make this an adam neely but for drums channel
YES
YES
Yes!
Or just, ya know, let the guy do his own thing
@@adgp8945 just a suggestion
10:28 nested triplets inside of quintuplets... An idea for Adam's video: how deep you can go...
You should check out Sorabji's music if you like nested tuplets. Its like an aviary
lol
What is a Vinnie Colaiuta and a bunch of cocaine?
Frank Zappa used to do a lot of that. In things like The Black Page, you'd see things like 3 quintuplets inside a triplet, for example, or triplets with different ratios, like 7:3.
You can tuple inside of a tuple inside of a tuple infinitely it's just a matter of being able to play and conceptualize, that's the difficult part.
Well, he did it !
I honestly am scared to even think about what rhythms would be actually too hard for you to play. I'm not say you don't have to work at it, but what you can work out is frankly remarkable.
Sungazer's music is not quite my thing, but seeing the process makes the result more enjoyable.
Now that's some beefy snare
Your ability to play polyrhythms on top of grooves that just straight up bounce is incredible. Honestly the only other drummer I've seen do stuff as rhythmically complex as this is Matt Garstka. I'm not really a drummer, but this just shows me how there really is no limit as far as technical proficiency on the drums.
Luca Scheid
Damn dude, go listen to some fusion or heavily fusion influenced prog metal
Why everyone always forget blotted science?
You are new to prog, aren't you?
Matt gartstka is fantastic
Virgil Donati, Jojo Mayer, Thomas Lang, Matt Halpern, JD Beck are some more good names to check out
As someone who never understood the writing process for drums, this is amazing
Hey Shawn, you have the best drum face in the game! Thanks for this, it's fascinating to see your creative flow.
@@PasIvre ok
its so nice to see all the hard work that goes into your drumming b/c its always ON POINT in sungazer tracks
As a non-drummer composer who writes his own MIDI drum parts, I found this kind of content fantastic. Thanks so much for giving us an insight about your writing and production process, can't wait to see more from you!
I love drum language whenever I come across it: "daka daka brrrr dit daka" :D
(hash tag me transcribing Shawn transcribing drums)
I've never seen so much detail go into a drum part.... incredible.

Can you and Adam play a straight 4/4? You're not able to do that! Great Groove guys, i love your music!
Dope. I've now heard 2 Sungazer tunes; this one and "drunk" and really enjoyed them both. Excited to hear the rest of the EP. God, I need a drummer like you in my life.
That tension feeling when the bass drops out is like hitting the vertex of jump. That’s the part in music videos and action scenes when everything goes slow mo and weightless. I love it.
this is the perfect description of that feeling
That is an insane amount of work time and effort. Respect man.
You broke the first rule of fight club.
when shawn sais something is going to be too hard to play... watch out
It’s wild to see how many of those patterns are just single strokes orchestrated really really well
Those hi-hat ostinatos define the song for me, good call haha :p
I've had nightmares like this before
So sick. And the way your hits match the music in 12:54 is dope.
"I basically took what I recorded and pitched it up a perfect fifth because I like that effect"
I'm pretty sure that's the classiest way you could say that you like power chords.
Isaac Tschampl well, this is not the same thing, power chords in most musical way express the harmony and even tho you just hear a “blank sound” of 151 voicing, you could still know where you are, the fifth effect however works in a differend manner, you stack up a fifth to every note you play, so the voicing is just 15 (not realy a voicing) and the musical approach is totaly differend. you dont care about the harmonic functions anymore (I mean not just outlining the progression), because if you did, you’d need to have bunch of chords per measure, with this you just play whatever you like (fex. express bebop vocabulary over techno is the best thing, but whatever right..) and the fifths just create an “effect”. Why they work so well might be because of the harmonic series, you accualy hear the perfect fifth in all the pitches of the bass, but not as bright since it comes as the third tone of the series, it still sounds quite natural, but less than an for example octave pedal, it kinda does the same thing but on a differend level.
Neat, you took a music class. How cute. Go flex somewhere else.

I really enjoy the style of this video and wouldn't mind more videos like it!
Amazing to see behind the scenes for Electro!!!
FREAKING LOVE THE NEW EP OMG!!!!!
Mike Stern at 16:08... WOW!
Great video and tunes! Please keep up the good work. To be able to see the process you guys go through is extremely educational and amusing. (Also now I can actually understand what grooves you're playing)

Really loved watching this process.
Came across Sungazer a couple months ago on spotify. One of the best recommendations ever!! Keep up the BA work!! Definitely inspiring
Insanely useful to see the process and practice that goes into the drum parts. Thanks for sharing.

This song was KILLER live!! Great vid!
"This is electro" and this video is GOLD.
I don't even know how I found your videos, but they are adding so much value to my life!
Congratulations for your AMAZING job with this video AND the song!!
I am just blown away by your drumming and your attention to detail. You and Adam work so well together. I hope you guys do a full-length album at some point. I'm a big fan of Sungazer.

This is an amazing vid Shawn, the new EP is immense
This is awesome, Shawn, thank you A LOT!
Love this mate!
The guys are so skillfull and the music is transporting. Hoping to listen much more from you in the future !
You have amazing talents built up. Take on the world.
excellent! I hope this gets more exposure :D I'm glad you can get a chance to throw in lots of your own music ideas, even though the track was practically arranged before.
That's an excellent video. So glad that I found it. I absolutely love music making videos like that. I learned from it. Thanks =)
Yes, great seeing a tutorial of that good music of yours. I listend to the new EP, quite trippy stuff!
This piece was my instant favorite; super dope! :D
Great video! I hope to see more from you in the future!
frenetic...not usually my cup of tea, but the sax elevates this and somehow I came away feeling refreshed at the song's completion, and oddly satisfied. now for another listen...
This is huge !
14:23 was my favorite part- when the sax solo comes in.
Supercool! Thanx for sharing. ✌🏻😄
What a fascinating video. Thanks for making this.
You’re unreal man. Excellent video. 🤘🏻
What a great track, Shawn!
This is some of the hippest shit on UA-cam right now. Damn the syncopation on some of these movements is hard to wrap your head around, even with the 20 minute breakdown.
Dude this was so sick
And one more prime example to get my noggin fixed: It is not intimidating, it is inspiring. Gorgeous work, thank you, subscribed.

I love this song soo much!
So so cool, excellent EP
Great vid!
The 5-open-hi hat ostinato is wicked!
Really cool. More of this please!
Hella' tasty 40th notes. Killer job with this! Absolutely love the quintuplet ostinato between hands/legs.
Sounds amazing!
That part @12:57 is soooo groovy!
Inspiring. Drums are so cool of an instrument. 🥁
Haven’t gotten chills like that in a while. In the musical version of chasing the dragon, Sungazer is definitely the dragon.
Hey Shawn, I wasn’t feelin’ this track until the last minute or so, then had to add a TU. Cool grooves, man. You and Adam got some-‘n’, good luck 2 y’bofe!
Great video + incredible drumming
Holy fucking shit. Some of the highest level drumming i've ever seen...
Hi shawn, I'm new from Adam Neely's channel. I really appreciate this video, and as a native drummer really want to learn from your expertise. Thank you for such great content!
That's a big snare, man!
Great vid and stellar song
Great stuff!
I used to play in a punk band. We never did anything like this and it shows lol. Great job!
