Im an old fart and i had the pleasure of having dinner with Bruce Dickinson (vocals), Steve Harris (bass player), and Adrian Smith (guitar) way back in the early 80's when i was a young teen because a friends father was a regional director for Capital/EMI Records and i just happened to be at her house when they showed up. They were still relatively new to the metal scene in the US at that time and were doing some promo work for their "Number of the Beast" album and world tour. Its a really strange feeling when you meet these "larger than life" rock stars and they turn out to be very down to earth and normal people. Bruce and Adrian even did an impromptu acoustic version of "Hallowed Be Thy Name". This is one of those memories which will stick in my brain until my dying day because it was so incredibly special for a young metal head like me at that time. \m/

It will come down to who gets their boobs out first for fame! No real comment on the song itself. Edit: did some googling, and apparently he started out with foil but switched to epee in 2003. He also switched hands at one point, when he discovered he was better with his left hand. I wonder if he's just naturally left handed, or ambidextrous, and never knew due to the stigma against being left-handed back then.

What really makes Iron Maiden impressive is the simple fact that they earned their success the old-fashioned way. They did not get a lot of support from radio stations, their fan base was built by fans exposing their friends to the music, and by their epic concert performances that gained them a huge following.

Absolutely. I remember a cousin introducing them to me in the mid eighties but I didn't think much of them. Then in 1987, I picked up Def Leppard's Hysteria after hearing Pour Some Sugar on Me. That was my gateway to rock music, which some 5 years later after going back to college developed into heavier music and I was reintroduced to Maiden. While they did get some airtime in the UK, it was usually only when they had a hit single in the charts. It says something, though, that their only UK number one was "Bring Your Daughter to the Slaughter" and that had zero air time as the BBC banned it. Back then, if you got your single banned, it was almost a surefire way to hit No. 1.

Iron Maiden, a group of very talented musicians that have written songs that have gotten kids interested in history and literature. Many of their songs are inspired by historical events and many are inspired by pieces of literature. The Trooper, inspired by the famous Charge of the Light Brigade during the Crimean War and the poem by Lord Tennyson. Aces high is about the bravery of the RAF pilots during the Battle of Britain. The Rime of the Ancient mariner was based on the poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Two Minutes to Midnight was inspired by the doomsday clock and the pressures during the height of the cold war.

Loved Iron Maiden when I was in my teens, and it's great for workouts now. A lot of their songs take their themes from Greek and Roman mythology, Norse Eddas, and world history. Another fact about Bruce is that he worked as a commercial airline pilot, as well as flying the bands tour plane. 'Piece of Mind' probably holds the title of "favorite album" for me, which 'The Trooper' is on, as well as my favorite 'Flight of Icarus'.
Eggplant/aubergine is one vegetable that I'm happy to let the raccoons, squirrels, and rabbits eat. It, and cauliflower, have virtually no taste or flavor and provide nothing to a meal except mass.

Great reaction, Diane. Now I think your next Iron Maiden reaction should be the song "Hallowed Be Thy Name". The Beast Over Hammersmith performance 1982 is the best live performance of this song.

RUN TO THE HILLS is my favorite Maiden song. I got into them during my Senior English class... We were studying the great English poets. Our teacher mentioned "The Rime of The Ancient Mariner" by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. A stoner kid in the class who was doing anything except trying to pass the class... Piped up "I KNOW THAT ONE!!!" The teacher, exasperated by his interruption, asked "What do you mean you know it? He said, "The whole thing, I know it..." She said, "OK, if you know it, tell it to us right now. If you can do that, you will pass this class." He did, and he did. He graduated because of IRON MAIDEN. That isn't all though. He explained that he knew it from their song of the same name. After some back and forth the teacher had him bring all of his MAIDEN albums to school. We spent the entire following week listening to, and analyzing IM songs. The teacher, and many students, like myself, became fans. About 2 years later, I saw them live at the Monsters of Rock Tour at Donnington England. That was the best live show I have ever seen. So, there are 2 suggestions for songs for you... 😉

Fabulous review, Irish Girl! What a welcome home, just got back from an 8 hour road trip, a very pleasant surprise for Boxing St. Stephen's Day. (that's right, a 3 round bout).
Looking forward to the next music vid, though I've yet to catch up on Joni Mitchell. Have you loaded the DJ Jukebox for the rest of the year?

This very song triggered something in me and triggered me to have the desire to be a musician first I tried guitar but then the bass and I was hooked. 40 some years later I'm have 5 maiden tattoos, have played in several bands and still do to this day. We may not play maiden out anymore, but I practice their music daily.

Oh, you have DEFINITELY only scratched the surface of the band, excellent call! Also, excellent choice for the first song of theirs to check out, The Trooper is legendary!
Songs worth listening to, without a doubt:
The Clansman (the only good song with Blaze Bailey on vocals, but honestly a masterpiece)
    Number Of The Beast
Fear Of The Dark (Rock In Rio live version)
    The Wicker Man
    Two Minutes To Midnight
    Aces High
Bruce Dickenson is definitely the main, essentially only, lead singer. And The Iron Maiden Family is definitely not what the fan base is called LOL, the internet can be really funny sometimes.
So glad you looked into these guys! And I loved how your head could not stop moving during the entire song - that's what amazing metal does to ya!
