The legendary Steve Harris is a very skilled bassist but this guy is on another level.First time hearing an Iron Maiden classic and to come up with he's own version and pretty well nail the changes. Not as forcefull as Mr.Harris but if it really is a first run through, well it's a really impressive take on this tune.
I had played all maidens songs for years up to fear of the dark. I was the bass player in a show called IRN MACMAIDEN. WE WERE BACK IN THE DAY THE BEST SCOTTISH MAIDEN TRIBUTE. 👍🏻

I know dude is a legend in his own right, but I'm mad dude nailed the gallop. Without even knowing who Steve Harris is 😅. Took me forever to be able to do that without my fingers getting exhausted. His version sounded pretty dope as well.
@@oliverjr73 You're right but he still didn't get it right. I however always assumed Steve uses three fingers since it seems easier. Just like one might assume James Jamerson uses more than one finger ...but also wrong. It was a fair effort from Justin Raines and nicely played but the 5 string muted/muffled sound is simply the opposite of Steve's raw and harsh sound.
@@hauxon Valid, but they're both very different instruments. Steve plays a 4 string p-bass, with a super chunky neck, and uses flatwound strings. @@oliverjr73 that's not right. He didn't gallop. He played straight eighths. So he didn't know the song needed a gallop bassline otherwise he would have played one! Also my own personal story with this song is that it was the first song I played with my band when we got started and only after one playthrough we knew that it had to be a mainstay of our set every time we did a show, and it’s been our closer ever since
J Raines... Sir.... WELL DONE !!!! I'm a metal head and fan of Iron Maiden since 1982.
That was amazing! Maiden is my all-time favorite band (since 1983) and hearing a different take on the bass for this song was really a trip. Way different but it still fit perfectly, it was cool to hear the spots where Justin instinctually played what Steve played as well, he's an incredible musician.
Thank you so much for introducing that format for bass. Been enjoying the Drumeo ones a lot, and couldn't wait for that format on here.
This was amazing, I am in awe at how great Justin did, even with his own spin. Ian and Sharon's reactions made it even better.
He didnt miss even once, gallpoing bass, melodic, dynamic, A1 take on the song I really enjoyed this.
Loved it. Man he's on another level of bass playing that I aspire to. 99 more levels to go and I'll get there. 😅 I don't have anyone particular in mind but reaching out to Metal and Rock bass players to play some funk, r&b and jazz.. it would just be hard to find guys who haven't heard the greats before.
Retention is everything, knowledge of your instrument is Ultimate level.
I love this format! Talk through the techniques and how different people approach transcribing basslines.
Israel’s songs are SO good. Musically, quite technical as well. So glad you had Justin Raines on!
The man's got skills & did a MAIDEN song justice. Respect!
No he didn't he missed the most important rythmic part of the song.
@@CrazyHenkie777as you see from the video, he learned the song without listening to the bass. So he made his own parts up.
@@JazzSoulMetal He lacked intensity.
Killed it. I had a mile long smile with the little accents he put on a classic bass song! Monster player!
This is wonderful. Such a fun game to grasp how music is made
Started playing drums in 1983, learned so many Maiden songs. I absolutely love these style videos showing these bad ass musicians hearing for the first time songs I grew up on !
Justin Raines!!!!! 🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐, ngl having a church background prepares you for ANY genre of music, in one service we’ll have songs that are more traditional then some that are more rock driven or r&b driven just depends on the flow of service
never Christ driven
Facts 😊
The legendary Steve Harris is a very skilled bassist but this guy is on another level.First time hearing an Iron Maiden classic and to come up with he's own version and pretty well nail the changes. Not as forcefull as Mr.Harris but if it really is a first run through, well it's a really impressive
take on this tune.
Brilliant !!!!!
This shows that, whatever the genre, music is music and a real musician can play anything
Steve Harris is the master of galloping bass lines!
I think that each musician can learn from each other. Steve Harris is a legend.
This man is amazing I even loved his take on the song great bass playing wow!
I had played all maidens songs for years up to fear of the dark. I was the bass player in a show called IRN MACMAIDEN. WE WERE BACK IN THE DAY THE BEST SCOTTISH MAIDEN TRIBUTE. 👍🏻
Love it when someone loves the sound of the band more than the sound of themselves while also elevating the song.
OMG! He played effortlessly and relaxed as if it were a simple warm-up exercise that he's played 10,000 times before. What a beast. Just great. Thanks for sharing
That's a jazz musician for you... they use their ears!
He's an incredible NUANCE player. He gets the nuances and grace notes.
This is killer content 🔥🔥🔥
Justin! That was amazing! God bless you sir! Much love from Ohio
Geddy, John Myung, Scott Devine?
I've never heard of this lad Justin, but damn his freaking wicked..!! ”𝐔𝐏 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐈𝐑𝑵𝐎𝐒”
💥🤘🏼❤️🔥🤘🏼🎸
I know dude is a legend in his own right, but I'm mad dude nailed the gallop. Without even knowing who Steve Harris is 😅. Took me forever to be able to do that without my fingers getting exhausted. His version sounded pretty dope as well.
Well he actually missed the gallop and didn’t even seem to notice it during the session. Picked with two fingers even after hearing the original.
@@hauxon Steve Harris only uses two fingers.
You just can't replicate that tone with the bass he was using. The point that I was making, is that he knew the song needed a galloping bassline, despite having never heard the Iron Maiden song. Dude did beyond an exceptional job, and it really shows his mastery of musicianship, not just bass playing.
@@oliverjr73 that's not right. He didn't gallop. He played straight eighths. So he didn't know the song needed a gallop bassline otherwise he would have played one! Not saying he did a bad job, just disappointed that no one in the video pointed out the fact that Steve plays a gallop and he didn't - seems like a rookie oversight on behalf of the hosts.
It's a awesome interpretation. He changed completely (in a good way) this masterpiece.
🧡🧡🧡
They didn’t point out the gallop
Exactly what I was thinking. The man is obviously a great player but did not get the Steve Harris gallop. Just not the same without it.
@@harkadian6890 Totally understandable!! We're so used to hearing Harris's famous "gallop" it sounds naked without it!
Damn, Justin Raines has such a nice feel on the bass, absolutely loved his take and the way he played around with the song and those fills were so damn tasteful.
Iron Maiden is fairly easy to learn, but the endurance is unbearable, even with 3 fingers (Steve plays with 2!).
I had to post twice, This is the kind of bass player every drummer wants. SOLID!!!
