  • After dropping the tank twice to replace my fuel pump (which is a bitch of a job) , I tried this. Removing the bed can be even worse. After thinking about it, I should have used air or electric sheet metal nippers to cut the hatch.

I made sure that I cut mine over the support bracing for the bed that way I can screw it back down. I also removed my bed liner instead of being lazy...

I can appreciate the comments that suggest how easy it is to pull the bed when changing out the fuel pump. However, I only went to this extreme after helping a friend try the bed method on his 04' Silverado. He said 3 hours max. Two days later, after a broken finger and 3 atomic rusted bolts, we spent an entire day dropping the tank to make the repair. If you have better luck pulling the bed and don't want to cut your truck, enjoy. I'll lift my flap.

I've had my box off numerous times for cleaning, painting and rust proofing, once you've done it many times, it's pretty much a can a corn, plus I reinstall it with stainless steel bolts and wing nuts, but that's just me.

Hello my friend I just subscribed I know the pain you're talking about I have a 2000 GMC Sierra.
I replace the pump about 10 years ago drop the tank down in my yard what a pain in the ass this time I'm cutting a hole in the bed.
Do you think there's a big difference in the type of pumps you buy I paid 30 for mine on eBay made in China.
I think they're all made in China I'm not sure though what do you think.

@@KTHKUHNKK No, they are all the same. Why pay big bucks for a big name pump when I can pay 10 bucks for a chinese knock-off. I figure I have to change it out once a month buying eBay junk pumps and I get real good at it. Why pay for a premium brand like Delphi and not get to replace it for years and years.

Hey thanks a bunch! I just used this procedure after arguing with 2 of my friends who wanted me to drop the tank. After doing it in about an hour, they were impressed as well as myself. Talk about reducing the trouble and physical labor required.....I now have an access panel after leaving the right side attached, adding a thin steel strip below the cut edge and using self-tapping screws to secure the hatch. Awesome idea.

I cut an access panel for a 1996 Sierra.
Measure 13" from the side wall of the bed on the driver's side and draw a line parrellel to the side of the bed. Do the same thing again at 26".
Now from the front of the bed measure 13" and 19" and draw the two lines there. Do not exceed 19" or you will hit one of the bed supports.
After the cut, you will have an access door 13" wide by 6" deep. Just right to get the doggone pump out.

There is an easier way. On my Silverado I removed the bolts that hold the bed down on the fuel tank side. On the opposite side I loosened the bolts as much as possible while leaving enough threads to keep the bed from sliding off the truck. Went back to the fuel tank side and lifted that side a foot or so while my wife placed wooden blocks between the bed and rails to keep the bed elevated. Maybe a little cramped but worth that for the time saved from unhooking taillights, etc..

The dumb asses who say that this is an easy 45 minute job have obviously never tried to drop the tank or remove the bed bolts on a 12 year old truck like this one from the Midwest. It even looks like the fucking lock ring on the pump is rusted to shit. Now try to do it when it's fucking -4 degrees outside! I will tell you the same thing others have....THIS IS FUCKING BRILLIANT! I wouldn't do this to a new truck, but the guy even said it was a work truck with a bedliner and a rubber mat covering it all up. LOTS OF VEHICLES HAVE FACTORY ACCESS PORTS FOR JUST THIS REASON! Thanks for the awesome video!

Yes! And this truck doesn't even look that bad compared to most I've done. The army 90's chevy trucks are the worst. If you drop the tank on those expect to spend around 250 bucks on new fuel lines.

personally I think this is probably the best , fastest, and easiest ways to do this job. I have to replace mine and I am surely doing it this way. I agree this is the way the bed should be fixed from the factory. if you want to drop the tank or lift the bed that is your choice , but that doesn't mean this isn't the best way. so all you "mechanics" do it the way that suits you best. by the way take all your negative comments and stick them up your butts.

Funny how the ones that have never had to do this alone are the ones laughing at cutting a hatch in truck bed.
But it's actually the smartest thing to do, the beds are not easy to lift off, and rust underneath is terrible to work with.
The Manufacturers Engineering Design Dept should have made this a mandatory design years ago. They're the idiots in that sense, they only care about making the money on the repairs at Dealers, garages, and parts sales.
    Great post Man from Nantucket.

I'm with Joshua! It takes 45 minutes, and is far from a knuckle buster! and the dude that says it takes 6-8 hours is on drugs. I have pulled 3 pumps on my silvy, and have tried bed off, bed tilted, and dropping the tank. Dropping the tank takes 2 bolts, and disconnect the lines (which you CAN see and get to easily). I put a board on my jack to support the tank, and walllah its out. Dropping the tank IS the easiest way. If you ever wanted to weld up that hole, you would have to drop the tank anyway.

Money and time saved kinda except anytime you change a pump you should clean the inside of the tank out which requires removing it otherwise your pump is more likely to fail early due to the sediment in your tank plugging it up, but to each their own and also it only takes 6-8 hrs to actually do a pump without an overhead lift with dropping the tank and cleaning properly.

If the engineers at GM had the brains to have this truck come with the hatch as a factory access, would it bother you nay sayers to remove the pump through the factory hatch. So what the hell is wrong with using your brain and making the job easier. This is exactly how I would do this on my truck. I would of course make a seal and bolt the cover down. One piece of advice though, if you are going to use those crimp connectors, make sure you use electrical shrink wrap over those connectors. Personally, I always soldier the wires. Good video and congrats on using your head. Most imports come with this hatch from factory. Anyone feel guilty removing the hatch and replacing the pump. Not likely.

It wouldn't for the simple reason it would be recessed lip a manufactured door with bolts or screws and a much needed gasket to keep debris and water off the tank. So no, it wouldn't and would have been a great idea and a failure on GM's part.

Dropping the tank on a 1999 Silverado is a nightmare. Picking up the bed is better. Get the stuff out of the bed and remove the tail gate. Take loose the 8 bolts (4 per side) unclip the wire plugs at the rear, 3 screws at the filler opening, and a couple friends to pick the bed up. Move it back 3 feet, It sets nicely on the rear tires and the bumper. Really easy.

    • @JoshuaJonah
      @JoshuaJonah 5 років тому

It's easier to just take out the four on the drivers side then listen the ones on the passenger. After that a single person can lift the drivers side up and put an appropriate sized 2x4 between the fender well and the tire. Now you have full access and it's a one man job.

  • @ykmalachi

Dropping the tank and changing out the pump only takes 45 minutes total on the whole job. Not worth cutting the bed of the truck IMO. On some cars it is better to go this route. I've done it on a few of my cars over the years because dropping the rear end and exhaust system was not viable. But on a truck, the job is very easy.

It is CRAZY why American auto makers DO NOT install a access door in there cars and trucks to access the fuel pump. It is clear that we an NOT ever going to see the fuel pump mounted on the engine blocks again! All fuel injected vehicles require the fuel pump to be inside the gas tank. Most european cars and trucks have an access door for the fuel pump.

EITHER THAT OR JUZT TAKE LIKE EIGHT BOLST FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE CHASIS TO TAKE THE BED OFF AND REST IT OVER THE TIRES. I DID IT MYSELF, IS NOT THAT HEAVY AS IT APPEARS. 5-10 MIN. TO TAKE IT OFF AND 5 TO BOLT IT IN.

You are slow. I can do the whole thing, from removing the bed bolts, unplugging the tail lights, dismount the filler tube, lift the bed and set it back on the tires and bumper by myself, remove old pump, install new pump, place bed back on frame, bolt it back down, hook everythng back up......and it took me 5 minutes total. But I'm good.

Man I'm laughing at all the "ASE super techs" poo pooing this guy. Time is money, hack job or not.
Nobody in their right mind would do this to a nice truck, lets be clear on that.
But if this was a 15 year old, beat up farm work truck and I could save a few hundred bucks in time, you bet your ass I'd cut a hole in the bed and tack weld it back in place. Maybe even put a hinge and bolts on it for the next time.

one thing to remember is don't let the fuel get below 1/4 of a tank that is a sure way to burn out the pump because pump is lubricated by the fuel .

Some of you people are WAY to LAZY!! Do not cut your bed! DO it the right way so you dont create more problems for yourself, like getting laughed at when you ter and sell your truck or any of the many problems cutting a huge hole in your bed will cause later down the road! Also, NO shop charges $1000 to do a fuel pump in a chevy truck!!!! Thats fuckin CRAZY!
My shop charges at the most $100 labor! Take your car to a REAL tech to get repaired the right way!

Thanks for posting this. My truck is a long box, which will put the tank farther back, but the 20" from the side helps. I'm going to school to be a mechanical engineer... You know what people piss me off most? Engineers... An access hole should have been designed in these trucks. Engineers should have to do some sort of labor in their field before being hired as an engineer. I've been working on cars since I can remember, I was also a welder/fabricator for 5 years... I will remember those things

No the bed will rot to shit quick. Lol. If GM was really smart, they would of designed an line fuel pump. Oh. Stop buying the cheap aftermarket junk. Theres a reason why the oem lasted 125k

Just unhook the tail lights, remove the three small screws around the gas cap, push in the gas hose, unscrew the ground wire, unbolt the 8, (6 in some) bolts holding the bed down and remove the entire bed and you be able to get to it in about 30 minutes tops.
