As a Game Gear kid, seeing that first level Sonic 2 boss gave me PTSD! It was one of the only games I had though, so I played it over and over again till I learned its patterns. It made the rest of the game feel so easy - why was this the first boss?!?!
@@bruh_burh Anh bruh, as someone who got a master system with sonic two for their birtday, that first pincer boss totally fucked me up, but no where NEAR as bad as those FUCKING HANG GLIDERS!
Yeah, the boss was tough... Like the first time or two that I fought it. After maybe 5 minutes of trial & error at most it was fine. I figured it out & moved on. Now it's no challenge at all. What are you whining about?
It's funny how the screen crunch basically kills this game, the Master System version is actually kinda decent, but the Game Gear version becomes terrible even though it's basically the same game simply because you can't see the obstacles in front of you in time to react. And yet, Sega prefers to act as if the Master System never existed and re-release only the Game Gear versions even though it knows that the best versions of 8-bit Sonic games are the Master System ones. (except for Sonic Blast since the Master System version has less details, fewer colors and problems with screen filling)
I had this terrible game for the game gear when I was a kid and couldn't beat the first boss for ages. I finally did and got close to the end of the game and got game over. I never picked up the game again.
Nice! Never played Sonic 2 on the master system only on the Megadrive despite it being my fav game of all time 😂😂😂 loved sonic on the master system though which was my first encounter with the blue hedgehog! Great review!
Once more you articulate the exact same experience I had. Got this before the Mega Drive Sonic 2 came out thanks to a family member, and liked it enough. But goddamn, it was hard. I think I only saw Crystal Egg once, and I can't remember if a sibling got there for me or not. Still, I was a Sonic fanatic and probably loved it all the same.
You need to play it on a actual Game Gear. It's horrific - the LCD blur and smaller screen made the game so damn hard. I remember it running way too fast and just too blurry to be any actual fun.
Between this and The Empire Strikes Back for Gameboy (another port from an 8-bit tv-linked console with a severely limited field of view), 10- and 11-year-old me had a lot of frustrating study breaks! Not having access to the internet meant I just practiced and learned these, particularly the second act of Scrambled Egg, but having figured it out myself and beaten it did give me a great sense of accomplishment back then, as strange as it sounds.
I liked the game. Still, looking back at it, I have no idea how I was able to finish the game with all chaos emeralds back when I was a kid. I must have been a lot more patient than I thought!
Oh my gosh! That boss with the bouncing balls was the bane of my existence. Rarely I ever got past it, and because of it, there's so much of this game I didn't get to enjoy. Did the game not get playtested?
That was a pretty hilarious (and accurate) take on this game. For some reason i still love any 8bit sonic but this game just needed to be easier and it wouldve been great
Sonic 2 for the Mega Drive is my favorite game ever. Since I enjoyed Master System Sonic 1 more then Mega Drive Sonic 1, my expectations were huge for this game. I turn on my Master System to play Sonic 2 and... "what is this crap?". After playing it for some days, I realized my problem wasn't with the game, but with that freaking hang glider. The game isn't bad, but comparing it with the Mega Drive version isn't fair. I won't even try to play it on the Game Gear, because it seems a living hell. And, after 20 year playing it, I still hate that freaking hang glider!
Seeing this being a common opinion these days bugs me. Game Gear kids loved this game as a pack-in back in the day. I thoroughly mastered it in the ‘90s, and still remember ever emerald location. Performance-wise, it’s a lot faster and more responsive than Chaos and Triple Trouble too. I guess my experience with the game blinds me to its flaws, but I still really love it, and it’s one of my favorite Sonic games ever made. Hiding emeralds in the levels instead of bonus levels is a HUGE plus for me, and the incentive to find them all is quite dark for a Sonic game. I admit I’m biased, since my skill level is higher than it is for any other game in the series.
My parents couldn't afford the mega drive so I had the master system. I played sonic 1 and 2 to death and always remember being disappointed deep down but didn't want to upset my parents by saying anything. Sonic 2 was way harder. The mega drive versions looked so much better and the sound alone left the 8 bit version standing. I did get a mega drive eventually but then discovered super mario world on the snes and got hooked on that
The complaints are always the same... All the crappy young players bash on this game simply cus it's tough. It's like clockwork. Being bad at a game doesn't make the game bad. It just means you need to practice & get better. The level design is tough but very solid. I for one am glad the game didn’t baby players by giving rings in Boss Zones. It makes you earn it. Seeiously, the amount of ppl who bitch about the first boss alone that isn't even that hard blows my mind. Go out there & practice! It's really not THAT hard.
I respectfully disagree. Some games are just plain crappy. At the end of the day it's just opinions though. Congrats for being great at Sonic 2 on Game Gear. I'd rather play the Master System version ✌
@GFrom Of course you do. You and every other young gamer who lacks patience & skill. It's as predictable as the rising sun. I suppose some older games that make the player earn their victory just aren't for everyone. I'll agree with you that the SMS version is certainly easier with it's increased screen real estate. It's the better version for sure.
I've beaten the GG version many times and just don't like it all that much - what can I say. Hard games aren't automatically good games. Sure you can practice at every single game out there and get better. But I'd rather spend my time with hard games that aren't this flawed. If you like it better than me - more power to you. I'm glad you enjoy it.
@@GFrom Problem is the game isnt flawed at all. It's just hard. That's what makes you wrong. Saying it's flawed is just ridiculous because it isn't. It's game, level & music design are excellent. All your complaints are merely talking about things being too hard. That doesn't make it a bad game. It just means the skill level required isn't for you. This is exactly why I say that you're just a typical nobody who knows nothing. You're the last person anyone should trust reviewing a game when you say stuff that just isn't true.

Probably because it was originally designed for the master system so the screen crunch was a problem

9:21 "At least I can drown in peace." That one really got me. 🤣
15:47 I love Scrambled Egg Zone act 1. It takes a lot of memorization, but I like that!
Ugh I could never get through scrambled egg zone 2 as a kid now that I know how close I was to the end actually madder about it

I love the mountain gimmick song, also the music from the first levdl and scrambled egg levels 😍 I had this game and enjoyed it a lot in the 90s 🎉
Yesss, I was thinking last night it's about time for a new one. I'm hoping to see many more sanic related reviews in the future :D
Then it's your lucky day I guess :D There will be one more Sonic review after this in 2021.

Sonic 2 for the Mega Drive used to be my favourite 2D game of all time for most of my life. Then Sonic Mania came along :D

I have found an exploit for the tubes in Scrambled Egg Zone , when you're about to choose a path in the tubes you do it by pausing the game .
I've never tried that...😅

Good Job on this review! I enjoyed the original game on gamegear better but this game is decent!
The cloud you can jump on have more puffs in the middle
Without a save load function, that game is impossible to beat
Sonic: You can never grab too many rings.

Sky High's music is an absolute banger.
is it a tutorial of SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2?

Thanks for talking about sonic 2 for game gear, this game is very obscure and unique
It sure is! But I'm glad the Master System version exists. That way it reaches its full potential.
Oops, guess i'm screen crunching till i develop muscle memory ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Never managed to beat the first level boss

a nostalgic game with a lot of memories.

Awesome review. Enjoyed your take on the game.
I totally agree with you. They really messed up with this game. I doesn’t feel like anybody has ever tested it
My all time favourite game!!
Sonic is the cooler character but Mario had better games and even though I never cared much for Sonic games, I love your reviews so here I am.
